Magic Head Designer Mark Rosewater is no stranger to public relations. He's teased multiple sets for players ahead of the debut of their preview seasons in years past. This is normally done through <a href="https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/">his Tumblr account</a>, known as "Blogatog". On this social media account, Rosewater often answers important Magic design questions from curious players. On Tuesday, July 1st, Rosewater gave players <a href="https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/787882322917801984/maros-edge-of-eternities-teaser">a teaser for what to expect</a> in the next Magic set, Edge of Eternities.
<h2>Mark Rosewater’s Edge of Eternities Teaser</h2>
To directly quote Rosewater's post, here are a few notable abilities you can expect from the new set:
<blockquote>• repeatable activated ability that lets you draw two cards and create a 2/2 creature token
• white card that can return noncreature, nonland cards from the graveyard to the battlefield
• another “Arch” charm
• card that makes you choose odd or even
• new artifact token called Munitions
• variant on devour
• card that lets you take control of an opponent
• legendary five-color artifact
• poison card
• card that grants an ability to Slivers</blockquote>
After these, Rosewater showcased some rules text, albeit many likely only in part:

<h2>Thoughts on the Teaser</h2>
Overall, we're excited to see all the new cards! Players seem especially interested in what a Munitions token will do.
We are also quite intrigued about the (probably) attack trigger that puts a creature from the defending player's graveyard onto the battlefield tapped and attacking. Are there strings attached to that trigger?
Furthermore, it is very cool that we will be seeing a return of the Eldrazi in the set. However, we are fairly aware of the number crunch for colors in the set. Because colorless nonartifact cards come first in the set number order, we can anticipate only one Eldrazi, if not a very small handful more.
In addition, we also seriously cannot wait to see the Lobster Citizen legendary creature, and what it is capable of. Is it just a "silly little guy"? Could it be a menace in Constructed? We'll just have to wait and find out!
Finally, what in the world(s) could Nebula Dragon do? That name is amazing!

Magic Head Designer Provides Teaser for Edge of Eternities

On Monday, June 30th, 2025, Wizards of the Coast officially banned several cards in the Standard format. The ban list now has seven new additions compared with the day before. But what are these seven cards, and why were they banned? Read on!
<h2>The New Cards on the Standard Ban List</h2>
The new cards banned in Standard are as follows:
<ul>

At this time, no other formats have banned any additional cards (except Pioneer Best-of-1 on Arena, which banned <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tibalt&#039;s Trickery" href="#" target="_blank">Tibalt&#039;s Trickery</a>). The only format with new cards on its ban list is Standard.

<h3>Were Any of These Bans Surprising?</h3>
Many players drafted up their proverbial ban list Bingo cards in advance of the June 30th announcement.
A lot of players seemed to believe that Cori-Steel Cutter and Monstrous Rage were set to be added to the list. These players were absolutely right, as were players anticipating a Beanstalk ban, as well as This Town Ain't Big Enough.
Some ambiguity came for the Omniscience Combo deck, however; players seemed unsure of how Wizards of the Coast would account for that deck.
In the end, Wizards chose to ban Abuelo's Awakening to impact the deck. Wizards also banned Heartfire Hero and Hopeless Nightmare to stabilize Standard even further.
<h2>Will This Stabilize Any Prices?</h2>
At the time of writing, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cori-Steel Cutter" href="#" target="_blank">Cori-Steel Cutter</a> is sitting at an approximate $9 average price, with the market value at approximately $6.50. Multiple formats value the card as a utility Equipment for Voltron Commander decks and the previously considered mono-red aggro decks in Standard, among potential others.
With Cori-Steel Cutter now on the Standard ban list, Commander players should have a considerably easier time acquiring the card.
Beyond that, none of these cards were particularly expensive, with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Abuelo&#039;s Awakening" href="#" target="_blank">Abuelo&#039;s Awakening</a> at a more-than-reasonable market value of $0.25 and the rest of the cards being of lower rarities.
<a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Up the Beanstalk" href="#" target="_blank">Up the Beanstalk</a> is a notable exception; in early May, Beanstalk, the core for the "Beans" deck, was sitting comfortably around $4, but now it has sunk to a market value of just over $1 per copy.
So, to sum this up, it stands to reason that the market will probably stabilize for these cards, if they haven't already stabilized prior to the bans.

Ban List Update for June 30th, 2025 Shakes up Standard

Magic Presents: Pride happened this past weekend, and it was a dazzling success in many ways.
Wizards of the Coast was busy with <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/celebrate-pride-at-your-local-game-store-and-beyond#Seattle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">their attendance at Seattle Pride</a>, showing their support of the LGBTQIA+ community while keeping consistent with their company goals. While this was happening, many Magic players attended the Magic Presents event.

A lot of players came to show their support and solidarity with the community, while others showed up for the awesome <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chromatic Lantern|PLG25|1" href="#" target="_blank">Chromatic Lantern</a> promo. Regardless of the reason, the event was generally a rousing success.
I went to Magic Presents: Pride this past Sunday, and here's how it went for me!
<h2>The Games</h2>
Playing a variant of Commander is usually a great time for all involved. After all, we're all willingly entering into a social contract by agreeing to new or variant rules. Heck, we're all entering a social contract by playing Commander, Magic, or most any game at all.
This variant for Magic Presents: Pride allows each player to have two commanders as though they had the partner mechanic.
<h3>Magic Presents: Pride - Game 1</h3>
I got to play two full games before I had to leave, and here's how the layout of the partner commanders went for Game 1:
<ul>
<li>Player 1 had <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Clive, Ifrit&#039;s Dominant" href="#" target="_blank">Clive, Ifrit&#039;s Dominant</a>, with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might" href="#" target="_blank">Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might</a>. His game plan here was to draw cards for value, pitch lands if necessary, and provide an aggressive strategy overall.</li>
<li>Player 2 had <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aisha of Sparks and Smoke" href="#" target="_blank">Aisha of Sparks and Smoke</a>, with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vikya, Scorching Stalwart" href="#" target="_blank">Vikya, Scorching Stalwart</a>. This player's overall intent was a Voltron-style strategy with Aisha/Ken, but in a partner variant, Vikya/Ryu also put in much work here.</li>
<li>Player 3 ran their first deck with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig" href="#" target="_blank">Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma" href="#" target="_blank">Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma</a>. This deck was generally one that plays large creatures, makes Yorvo even larger, and does what green does best: stomp face.</li>
<li>I ran <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER" href="#" target="_blank">Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER</a> with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ayara, First of Locthwain" href="#" target="_blank">Ayara, First of Locthwain</a>. My deck was a run-of-the-mill Aristocrats build, which wanted to slowly drain the life from my opponents.</li>
</ul>
<div class="edhrecp__cards side-by-side"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER"></div></div>
Notably, the gameplay for the first game lacked any blue involvement. The Clive deck ran very smoothly, drawing upwards of seventeen cards upon Clive hitting the battlefield.
After this, Player 1 managed to spit almost every card he drew onto the field, as well as Ojer Axonil. He did what he had to do, and was content with that when I defeated him with a ton of Aristocrat-based damage off of Sephiroth and his emblem. I mainly had tob on account of his <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sunspine Lynx" href="#" target="_blank">Sunspine Lynx</a>, which was keeping me off of lifegain for the majority of that game.
After this, I was taken down by Player 2, and Player 3 followed suit. It turns out, Ken and Ryu are very potent partners both in Magic and the Street Fighter series! And while I lost handily, it was a great game to play under the partner variant rules for Pride.
<h3>Magic Presents: Pride - Game 2</h3>
Our second game saw a couple of changes to decks, my own included:
<ul>
<li>Player 1 shifted over to a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jolrael, Voice of Zhalfir" href="#" target="_blank">Jolrael, Voice of Zhalfir</a> deck with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Zimone, Quandrix Prodigy" href="#" target="_blank">Zimone, Quandrix Prodigy</a> as her partner. This deck focused on animating lands with Jolrael while putting a ton of pressure on the table through these flying lands attacking most every turn.</li>
<li>Player 2 kept his game plan the same. Aisha and Vikya proved invaluable to Player 2 and he still needed to figure out a few shifts he needed to eventually make to the deck.</li>
<li>Player 3 shifted decks to a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Glarb, Calamity&#039;s Augur" href="#" target="_blank">Glarb, Calamity&#039;s Augur</a> build with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Azusa, Lost but Seeking" href="#" target="_blank">Azusa, Lost but Seeking</a> as his partner. This deck was a Sultai () value pile, also focusing on land ramp like the Jolrael deck.</li>
<li>Ever true to form, I shifted to my <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kefka, Court Mage" href="#" target="_blank">Kefka, Court Mage</a> deck. You can see the exact list for this deck <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/group-slugging-with-kefka-court-mage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">by clicking here</a>. My partner was <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chainer, Nightmare Adept" href="#" target="_blank">Chainer, Nightmare Adept</a>, chosen to give Kefka haste when he hit the battlefield. The game plan here is largely the same as in my deck tech. But, giving Kefka haste was a great plan as well, and went quite smoothly for the most part.</li>
</ul>

Kefka did a lot for the majority of the game, but struggled to keep up in the end. I kept Players 2 and 3 from gaining life with a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Screaming Nemesis" href="#" target="_blank">Screaming Nemesis</a> before trying to lock down hands with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Words of Waste" href="#" target="_blank">Words of Waste</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Waste Not" href="#" target="_blank">Waste Not</a>. However, by then my opponents managed to have a big enough board to keep the pressure on me until I lost.
I did manage to cast <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Disrupt Decorum" href="#" target="_blank">Disrupt Decorum</a> before going down, which changed the pacing of the endgame, but it proved fruitless as Jolrael's land creatures weren't affected.
At the end of the game, Glarb and Azusa came out on top. I predicted that Aisha and Vikya could have ended things, but alas, it wasn't to be.
<h2>The Good</h2>
I appreciated how everyone got to do their thing in these games. I am certain that other pods in the optional event also saw similar success in that vein. It was fun to see the Clive/Ojer Axonil deck pop off before being summarily extinguished.
I didn't get to do everything I wanted with Sephiroth, but that game was a great one nonetheless. Additionally, in Game 2, I got to do a lot of what Kefka typically wants to do (partly thanks to Chainer curving into Kefka), so I was content with being taken down as well.
The Glarb/Azusa deck was terrifying and completely deserved the win it got, even if it was also running the <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thassa&#039;s Oracle" href="#" target="_blank">Thassa&#039;s Oracle</a>/<a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Demonic Consultation" href="#" target="_blank">Demonic Consultation</a> combo.

These were amazingly fun games of Commander. The partner mechanic on all manner of combinations was a real sight to behold and it was great to see so many different kinds of decks spawn from the variant. However...
<h2>The Less-Good</h2>
We ran into a few issues tracking commander damage. The main problem came from Player 2 having both Aisha and Vikya leading a Voltron deck; both could have easily led the deck without the partner variant. There was a bit of confusion as to which commander was doing what damage in this case, namely, in the second game. However, this was quickly discerned soon thereafter, and for the most part, that was all fine afterwards.
Other than that, the event went without a hitch for us. The issue of commander damage tracking is why I'm glad this event happens once a year, give or take other special occasions. I wasn't a huge fan of having to track multiple commanders whose damage mattered as much as it did. However, I'm more than happy to attend future events like this!
Just, please, maybe reconsider the double-Voltron strategy next time.
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
If you find yourself in a position where you can attend Magic Presents: Pride in the future, please attend! It's a great event and a good chance to connect to people you otherwise might not know. Also, you're supporting an important and marginalized group of people by attending this event, by way of solidarity. The event is fully optional, but if you do these events, you could also claim a promotional card.

Secret Lair x Sonic: Three New Drops Officially Announced

Wizards of the Coast has announced two new formats for Commander play, starting with Edge of Eternities. They're both awfully familiar to players who've been around the block for a bit. That said, Wizards is making an effort to revitalize them for a modern player base. However, do these formats hit the mark? Read on and find out more!
<h2>2-Headed Giant Commander</h2>
The first of these two Commander formats is 2-Headed Giant. This format pits two teams of two players each against each other in head-to-head combat. Players have a shared life total (of 60, in the Commander context) and can block attacking creatures for each other. Other rules apply, including the other standardized rules for Commander.
Wizards of the Coast introduced this revitalization of 2HG in <a href="https://wpn.wizards.com/en/event/two-headed-giant-commander-night-edge-of-eternities">a Wizards Play Network article</a> regarding Edge of Eternities events. You can read that piece for more information about this format!
<h2>Edge of Eternities Commander Box League</h2>
The second and final "new" Commander format is the Commander Box League. This format takes the unofficial Commander Boxling League and changes key points from it in a way that fundamentally challenges Commander's core rules and spirit.
According to <a href="https://wpn.wizards.com/en/event/edge-of-eternities-commander-box-league">WPN's article on this league</a>:
<blockquote>After players open their Play Booster box, they construct a 60-card Commander deck from the contents. Buy-a-Box and Commander promos may not be used in deck building.
<ul>
<li>Decks may include multiple copies of cards opened from the Play Booster.</li>
<li>Any legal commander opened is allowed.</li>
<li>Color identity rules in deck building are ignored; players may build decks with any colors they want, regardless of their commander's color identity. Note: commander color identity still applies when cards refer to color identity (for example, with Arcane Signet).</li>
</ul>
Players may adjust their decks between games using cards from their Play Booster box.</blockquote>
The fundamental differences between this and Commander as a whole are stark. As a result, the new format's rules have left many players scratching their heads about why. Magic veteran Brian David-Marshall <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/bdm.bsky.social/post/3lseiqpv7xc2m">had this to say on social media</a>:
<blockquote>The difference between “Box League” and a “Boxing League” (the latter being the format I designed with [Commander format founder Sheldon Menery]) is that Boxing League is about building a Commander legal deck. Color identity, 100 card, singleton etc. only exception is Playtest cards in Mystery Boosters or stuff like that.</blockquote>
To this, Magic personality Brian Kibler responded, "It's odd to call something a Commander format when it doesn't follow most of the rules of Commander at all."

Edge Of Eternities: Two New Commander Formats Announced

According to a recent article on DailyMTG, Magic: The Gathering's main news hub, beginning with Edge of Eternities, art cards will no longer be included in Play Boosters. Instead, you can now only find art cards in Collector Boosters.
<h2>The "Collecting Edge of Eternities" Article</h2>
The article states the following about the rates for pulling art cards in Collector Boosters (section in bold typeface for relevance):
<blockquote>Each Edge of Eternities Collector Booster box contains 12 Collector Boosters, each of which contains the following:
<ul>
<li>15 Magic: The Gathering cards
<ul>
<li>5 Traditional foil commons</li>
<li>4 Traditional foil uncommons</li>
<li>1 Traditional foil or galaxy foil celestial basic land</li>
<li>1 Traditional foil rare or mythic rare</li>
<li>1 Non-foil extended-art or borderless Edge of Eternities Commander card</li>
<li>1 Non-foil Booster Fun card</li>
<li>1 Land from the Stellar Sights bonus sheet
<ul>
<li>Non-foil, traditional foil, and galaxy foil lands appear in this slot.</li>

<h2>The Internet's Reaction</h2>
This change is largely ambivalent to whether fans like the cards or not. Many players actually liked art cards. However, they originally seemed to be firmly in the minority among players who had an opinion of the cards. According to one Redditor, "As the one person at my LGS who collects art cards this makes me very sad. Usually during drafts people just give me the art cards they open cause nobody else wants them, so I get why WotC is doing it. But still. Pain." Another said, "Oh, I must be part of the few that actually likes them, I have tons of tokens and can make more but the art cards feel distinctive and cool."
Despite my earlier statement, it seems that these comments were not drowned in an ocean of approval. This potentially leads us to believe that more players liked these cards than the public lets on. Nevertheless, you can now find art cards at a rate of approximately 1 in every 3 Collector Boosters. This potentially raises the scarcity of these aesthetic add-ins.
And speaking of add-ins, Wizards of the Coast has also officially announced <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/collecting-edge-of-eternities">an end to ad cards in Play Boosters</a> as well. Silver linings, one could suppose!

Edge Of Eternities Discontinues Play Booster Art Cards

On Saturday, June 21st, Wizards of the Coast officially announced the dates and locations of their MagicCon events for 2026. What's more, they did it in a YouTube video, which may or may not have had a few Secret easter eggs hidden in it. What are the dates and locations, and what do the easter eggs mean? Let's dive into this!
<h2>MagicCon Dates and Locations</h2>
According to the official event site <a href="https://www.mtgfestivals.com/global/en-us.html">MagicFestivals.com</a>, the dates and locations for MagicCon in 2026 list the following pieces of information:

These event locations aren't anything too terribly new. However, it's worth noting that the conventions will return to these places again, especially for those in the area.
Now, we don't have any promo card information nor any confirmation one way or another. But, the YouTube video promoting these dates may hold a secret or more within it.
<h2>A Secret Lair Teaser?</h2>
As mentioned above, a YouTube video accompanied the location and date information for next year's set of MagicCon events. In that YouTube promo video, we see multiple references to the Elder Dragons of the Legends expansion.

Pausing this, you can see posters for <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Palladia-Mors" href="#" target="_blank">Palladia-Mors</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chromium" href="#" target="_blank">Chromium</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nicol Bolas" href="#" target="_blank">Nicol Bolas</a>. In an earlier still, you can see an ad for "Arcades' Arcade", a reference to the Elder Dragon <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arcades Sabboth" href="#" target="_blank">Arcades Sabboth</a>. These poster-style ads are in various art styles befitting of a Secret Lair drop. Does this mean that players will have copies of these cards in a drop? Will it be Commander-At-Home for 2026? This is entirely plausible, but as we don't have concrete confirmation, you are best off taking this as a rumor for now.

On Friday, June 20th, Wizards of the Coast announced a momentous Commander rules change. Starting with Edge of Eternities, legendary Vehicles and Spacecraft with a power/toughness box can be your commander! This change is massive and opens up a ton of design space for Magic: The Gathering.

In short, the rules change is one that Wizards wanted to apply for a while, but for a series of different reasons at different times, the format's shift had to wait until Edge of Eternities. Additionally, we have learned through this video that both precons from the new set contain a legendary Spacecraft to use as an alternate commander.

<h2>What is the Rule Change?</h2>
While the Comprehensive Rules have yet to officially update with these rules, here is the main idea:
<ul>
<li>Starting with Edge of Eternities, legendary Vehicles and Spacecraft cards will be eligible to lead a Commander deck.</li>
<li>To be fully eligible, the card has to be legendary and have a power/toughness box in its card rules.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Is This Impactful?</h3>
In a word, this is currently not a highly impactful change. It's largely just for fun, but it's still foreseeable as a permanent change to the format. This doesn't change <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shorikai, Genesis Engine" href="#" target="_blank">Shorikai, Genesis Engine</a>'s functionality, but it allows other Vehicles printed previously to share in that design space.

Some of the Vehicles now affected by this change are pretty cool, though. For one, you can now play <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Esika&#039;s Chariot" href="#" target="_blank">Esika&#039;s Chariot</a> as a commander, or <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="RMS Titanic" href="#" target="_blank">RMS Titanic</a>, or even <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Parhelion II" href="#" target="_blank">Parhelion II</a>. In fact, one interviewee I spoke with in the past for <a href="https://commandersherald.com/interview-dr-wendi-sierra-bethesda-scholar-on-the-new-fallout-decks/">Commander's Herald</a>, Dr. Wendi Sierra, has a Parhelion II "Big Angel Party Bus" deck. Frankly, I'm sure she's thrilled about this new change to the rules.

On the night of Thursday, June 19th, Wizards of the Coast officially revealed the full card for <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tezzeret, Cruel Captain" href="#" target="_blank">Tezzeret, Cruel Captain</a>. This Edge of Eternities card is going to be a hit amongst artifact fans of all kinds! But what does the card do, and why is it such a hyped centerpiece for the set? Read on, and learn more!
<h2>Tezzeret's Various In-Game Applications</h2>
Currently, neither we nor Scryfall have a good render of the card handy, as most of the assets available come from photographs of the render. However, the shots we have, all thanks to fans at MagicCon Las Vegas's Black Lotus VIP Lounge, show a complete card. As such, we feel it appropriate to share it here:

Tezzeret, Cruel Captain is a 4-loyalty planeswalker card for with no conventional means to gain loyalty. However, he has a very strong triggered ability that gains him the loyalty needed to survive. And boy howdy, does he ever gain it! Gaining one loyalty counter whenever an artifact you control enters, Tezzeret could activate his -7 ultimate loyalty ability on the turn he comes in. However, he's more useful for his -3 ability, which tutors up an artifact of mana value 1 or less. This is powerful in so many formats. Many Commander players will automatically recognize that this Tezzeret can immediately tutor up a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sol Ring" href="#" target="_blank">Sol Ring</a>.
And don't misunderstand me. Sol Ring is great, but Vintage players are apt to want to use Tezzeret to tutor up a Moxen card like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mox Sapphire" href="#" target="_blank">Mox Sapphire</a>, or a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Black Lotus" href="#" target="_blank">Black Lotus</a>. In Modern, players will be able to tutor up a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mox Opal" href="#" target="_blank">Mox Opal</a>, previously banned until very recently. Legacy's expansive player base seems to have it best here. They are able to tutor up <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lion&#039;s Eye Diamond" href="#" target="_blank">Lion&#039;s Eye Diamond</a> or basically any Mox that's legal in the format.
<h2>Tezzeret, Living Life on the Edge of Eternities</h2>
This card is undeniably strong. Furthermore, his art, illustrated by Magic artist <a href="https://www.rahnart.com/">Chris Rahn</a>, is stunning and dramatic, perfectly fitting for a space opera-style setting.
How would you use Tezzeret, Cruel Captain? Hopefully, the card has its use in Edge of Eternities Limited, so it's not a bust to open him in your Draft or Prerelease Sealed pools. Nevertheless, the card is fantastic.
