On Saturday, May 10th, the Final Fantasy preview season officially kicks off! Notably, a preview panel at PAX East in Boston, Massachusetts, showcases the first round of previews for the new Universes Beyond set. As such, we will recap it as the cards begin to roll in. <h2>What Final Fantasy Previews Will We See?</h2>
At this time, PAX East is already well underway. In fact, one of our writers, <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/author/cooper-gottfried">Cooper Gottfried</a>, is already on the scene.
Images from the convention have already begun to circulate around social media. We have seen oversized teasers of cards featuring Final Fantasy characters, both beloved and notorious alike. We have even seen images of a Chocobo wearing costuming that resembles <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chandra Nalaar" href="#" target="_blank">Chandra Nalaar</a>'s clothing. Truly, the collaboration is now in full swing.

Final Fantasy Panel Livestreams May 10th At PAX East

On the evening of Thursday, May 8th, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FinalFantasy/posts/pfbid02T3VmsH45Nimu25H198i2wFv1t9DzafUQKwTcPvobfVXNCsSrhHtiJXyqcLVZ4e12l">the official Facebook account for Final Fantasy</a> revealed the remaining two alternative commanders for their Commander precons. Yuna, Grand Summoner is part of the Counter Blitz deck, which features characters from Final Fantasy X. Graha Tia, Scion Reborn is the alternate commander of the Scions &amp; Spellcraft deck, showcasing the characters of Final Fantasy XIV.
<h2>Yuna, Grand Summoner</h2>
One of the main characters of FFX and the love interest of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tidus, Yuna&#039;s Guardian" href="#" target="_blank">Tidus</a>, Yuna is an extremely vital figure in the FFX canon. A summoner, Yuna can conjure beings known as "aeons" to aid in combat. She is also a proficient White Mage, using healing magic to act as a support role in the game and its sequel.

In the context of Commander, Yuna acts as a pseudo version of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Ozolith" href="#" target="_blank">The Ozolith</a>, but rather than the counters of the dead creature retaining their classification, Yuna effectively converts them into +1/+1 counters for another creature. What's more, Yuna is a mana-producing creature that puts +1/+1 counters on the creature that mana is spent on. In that way, she seems to do a bang-up job in somewhat imitating <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Great Henge" href="#" target="_blank">The Great Henge</a>.

<h2>G'raha Tia, Scion Reborn</h2>
G'raha Tia, also known as the "Crystal Exarch," is a major character in Final Fantasy XIV. He is a member of the protagonist's party and a member of the Miqo'te race in the game's setting. He is playful and eccentric, and, in the context of the MMO setting of FFXIV, can play the role of a Paladin, White Mage, or Black Mage. Versatile!

In the context of Magic: The Gathering, G'raha Tia is a token generator with lifelink. His second ability appears to synergize somewhat with the face commander of the "Scions &amp; Spellcraft" precon, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Y&#039;shtola, Night&#039;s Blessed" href="#" target="_blank">Y&#039;shtola, Night&#039;s Blessed</a>, but only just. However, the existence of a 1/1 colorless Hero token seems interesting. Usually, nonartifact creature tokens have a color associated with them. Is this indicative of something greater?
<h2>Final Days Before the Final Fantasy Panel</h2>

Final Fantasy Precons' Yuna And G'raha Tia Officially Revealed

As of the Final Fantasy set's June 13th release, Wizards Play Network, the entity responsible for maintaining and managing organized Magic: The Gathering play, will introduce "Chocobo Racing" to the events for the set. This augmentation to Limited events will begin after the set officially releases and will last until July 24th.
<h2>But First: What Are Chocobos?</h2>
In the scope of the hit Square Enix video game series, Chocobos are fluffy (usually) yellow bipedal birds. People in the game's universe usually use Chocobos as mounts. They're generally a means to get places much faster than on foot. Occasionally, riders will race with their Chocobo steeds. Final Fantasy VII formally introduced the "<a href="https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Chocobo_racing_(minigame)" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chocobo Racing</a>" minigame proper. However, since then it's blown up in a big way. The minigame has even had its own <a href="https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Chocobo_Racing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eponymous spin-off game</a> on the Sony PlayStation.
They're also generally viewed as the mascot/face of the series at large, much like the Slime is to Dragon Quest, or Pikachu is to Pokémon.
<h2>Final Fantasy Chocobo Racing In Magic</h2>
According to the Wizards Play Network's page on this event:
<blockquote>Chocobo Racing Events are the weekly Booster Draft and Sealed event based on the FINAL FANTASY VII mini-game "Chocobo Racing". Whenever players play Draft or Sealed events with Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY in your store, earning points to reach special rewards just for this event.</blockquote>
The site goes on to explain how this minigame works:
<blockquote>As players enjoy racing around the track throughout the season, they'll earn a set number of points that build toward rewards.
Award points for the following:
<ul>
<li>Players earn 3 points for each Draft of Sealed event (excluding Prerelease) they attend.</li>
<li>Players earn 1 point for each match they win in a qualifying event.</li>
<li>Existing players that bring in a new player who <a href="http://myaccounts.wizards.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signs up for a Wizards Account</a> and participates in a qualifying event earn 1 point.</li>

At the very end of the event, store owners are encouraged to give out any unallocated prints or pins to players who didn't make it to 10 or 20 points. WPN suggests stores give them out in order of highest standings at the end of the event's run.

Final Fantasy Adds "Chocobo Racing" To Magic Presents Events

Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy is just over a month out from its prerelease. At this time, Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix are rolling out information, but very slowly for many players' tastes. However, the seeming dry spell of information is close to an end. Wizards Play Network, the entity under Wizards that manages tournament play and organizer expectations, has put out details for the prerelease events for the upcoming Universes Beyond set.
<h2>Prerelease Format Details</h2>
As expected, the events are in the Sealed Deck format. This means six packs of Final Fantasy and a prerelease promo, found in the kits. REL is still "casual." Additionally, pairings are still Swiss-style (or, alternatively, Player List only, which suggests players can be freely paired as they wish).

The inclusion of 10-sided dice is very interesting. Notably, Mirrodin Besieged was the last time we had spindown d10s in a given prerelease event. There, they were intended for use as spindown poison markers. Thus, without drawing any extremely specific conclusions, this new "crystal" d10 might imply a mechanical application as well.
Prerelease events run from June 6th-12th, with the official release happening the following day. Amazingly, albeit not as shockingly, Final Fantasy is now <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/final-fantasy-best-selling-mtg-set-before-official-release-date" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the best-selling Magic</a> set to date, and it hasn't even come out yet!
All in all, Final Fantasy is shaping up as a really neat set so far. The tweet mentions that the Borderless Character art can only be found in Collector Boosters, many of which are already commanding prices above $100 a pack or $600+ a box on retail sites. This is no surprise, as Final Fantasy is already the best selling MTG set of all time, just a little over a month before its official release date.

According to <a href="https://www.wargamer.com/magic-the-gathering/best-selling-final-fantasy-sales">Wargamer</a>, during the Q1 earnings call from Hasbro on April 24th, 2025, CEO Chris Cocks reiterated the financial success of Final Fantasy's upcoming Magic release:
“Final Fantasy will be the best-selling set of all time on day one. It already is,” he said. Preorders for Final Fantasy products on Amazon sold out almost immediately after the initial preview stream, and most retailers are marking up Collector Boosters and Collector's Edition Commander decks to $600+ apiece.
Final Fantasy's new best-selling status will no doubt further entrench the decision to make Universes Beyond mainline set releases and products more frequent.
“It’s very clear to us that Universes Beyond as a strategy has increased the total active install base of Magic players, both in terms of reigniting lapsed fans as well as bringing in new fans,” Cocks said.
<h2>What's behind the growth in Hasbro's MTG earnings?</h2>
“It’s difficult to identify just one thing. Really what we’re seeing is an expansion of the playerbase,” Cocks explained. Many players could speculate the rise in Chaos Vault and Secret Lair drops have changed the model for MTG products in between mainline set releases.
As well as this, we can count on recent "nostalgia" sets like Tarkir: Dragonstorm having brought longtime players back into the fold to see fresh takes on old characters, game mechanics and settings.
One thing remains sure, Final Fantasy is bound to have some of the most popular Secret Lair drops of all time, leading to an even greater sales expectation for Wizards' current license of the franchise.

Final Fantasy is the Best-Selling MTG Set Before Official Release Date

It looks like Magic: The Gathering fans have yet another reason to rejoice! The currently untitled Magic film, produced by Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment, is now in its development stages. We currently don't know what stage of pre-production the movie is in. However, we know it's now past the development stage, meaning this is a very real prospect for the brand.

<li>Kinberg has several other projects in the works, including Deadpool 3 and Neuromancer, and helped produce Death on the Nile.</li>
<li>Feldman is also currently working on Haunted Heist, which is also in pre-production but has already cast Tiffany Haddish.</li>
<li>Sood has production credits for a few projects as well, including the up-and-coming cult film Cocaine Bear.</li>

On Thursday, April 24th, Hasbro announced that it renewed its longstanding licenses with The Walt Disney Company for Disney's Marvel and Star Wars properties. The license extension spans multiple years and will allow Hasbro to continue producing toys, games, and collectibles related to these properties. How will this affect Magic: The Gathering? <h2>Hasbro's Dealings With Disney</h2>
According to the press release made on April 24th, Hasbro has historically produced many kinds of toys and games for the Star Wars and Marvel brands. They have made Lightsabers and a plethora of Star Wars action figures, while on the Marvel end of things, they've produced Marvel Legends, preschooler toys based on Spidey and his Amazing Friends, and, of course, Universes Beyond. Under this new extension, Hasbro will continue to be able to produce these toys and games for years to come.

<h2>Hold Your Horses, Star Wars Fans!</h2>
This licensing extension looks extremely promising for Universes Beyond fans, especially with Edge of Eternities looming on the horizon. However, it is extremely unclear whether Star Wars will receive any Universes Beyond treatments. Yes, Edge of Eternities is a space opera setting, just like Star Wars. However, this extension is fresh. We also know Wizards of the Coast works approximately 2.5 years in advance, sometimes longer, on Magic sets. As such, getting a Universes Beyond license is a tricky prospect. Furthermore, with the Star Wars Unlimited card game gaining traction and popularity, Magic may not get a collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd., even if this license allows Hasbro to produce Star Wars toys.
Nonetheless, Marvel's continued collaboration with Magic is full steam ahead. As such, we are excited for the upcoming Spider-Man set and all that will entail!
