Hello everyone, and welcome to another addition of <em>Tech The Deck</em>, this time with a card from the upcoming <em>Magic: The Gathering</em> set <em>Edge of Eternities.</em> Who, or better yet, <em>what</em> might be the card I am speaking of? Well, it is none other than <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kilo, Apogee Mind" href="#" target="_blank">Kilo, Apogee Mind</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>I'm incredibly excited about this upcoming set and jumped at the chance to do a deck tech for this card. And Kilo, respectfully... I'd tap that. With all that out of the way, let's dive into how I decided to take this card and build a Bracket 4 deck to maximize Kilo's insane tap ability.</p>
<h2>Tap, Tap, No Concede</h2>
<p>This deck has one primary plan: turn a specific creature sideways over and over. The combat step is irrelevant; all we care about is the number of times we can untap and tap <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kilo, Apogee Mind" href="#" target="_blank">Kilo, Apogee Mind</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Thanks to some cards from the format's past and cards much older than the average player remembers, we have plenty of ways at our disposal.</p>
<h3>Aura You Glad I Untapped?</h3>
<p>Two Auras in blue allow this deck to go off.</p>

<p>These two cards might not have seen the inside of a sleeve, let alone a Commander pod, in some time, but thanks to Kilo, they're coming back with a vengeance. Each one has some slight benefits/drawbacks over the other, but both are an absolute must-run in this deck.</p>
<p>While <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pemmin&#039;s Aura" href="#" target="_blank">Pemmin&#039;s Aura</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has more abilities granted to the creature it's enchanting, in this deck, two of the four options are irrelevant. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Freed from the Real" href="#" target="_blank">Freed from the Real</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> only taps and untaps, but it has a more forgiving mana cost.</p>
<p>These two are the main highlights in the deck. Card draw and tutors like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gamble" href="#" target="_blank">Gamble</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Enlightened Tutor" href="#" target="_blank">Enlightened Tutor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will help us find these early and often.</p>
<p>The eagle-eyed among you have probably noticed that neither of these Auras has a free activation cost. While our commander's proliferation effect is strong, it alone does not make mana. So what are we to do?</p>
<h2>Making Mana</h2>
<p>Some of my favorite mana rocks make an appearance in this deck list.</p>
<p>I would bet almost every Magic player knows <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Everflowing Chalice" href="#" target="_blank">Everflowing Chalice</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> well. And the charge counters found on it are perfect for our commander to proliferate. But I have an even better mana rock at my disposal. Feast your eyes on the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Astral Cornucopia" href="#" target="_blank">Astral Cornucopia</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>The Cornucopia goes bananas in this or any deck that can proliferate the counters. Most times mana rocks such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sol Ring" href="#" target="_blank">Sol Ring</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are only kept slightly in check because they add colorless mana. But with Astral Cornucopia and our deck running on all cylinders, we can pump out <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> or <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> with ease.</p>
<p>The tricks don't stop there.</p>

<p>I have a slew of artifacts that allow for tapping of Kilo both for mana and for value.</p>

<p>I even come packing creatures that tap for all sorts of options: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crystalline Crawler" href="#" target="_blank">Crystalline Crawler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to give us whatever color of mana we need; <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Red Death, Shipwrecker" href="#" target="_blank">Red Death, Shipwrecker</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to lock out an entire table if we can use the ability multiple times in a turn; And <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Magda, Brazen Outlaw" href="#" target="_blank">Magda, Brazen Outlaw</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to make mana and tutor out any artifact we could want straight from the deck.</p>
<p>And artifacts are another central piece that allows us to win the game with this deck.</p>
<h2>The Artifacts</h2>
<p>Some combos in the game are complicated to explain. They're long and drawn out, and if you mess up even one step, the entire thing falls apart. Other combos are so devilishly simple, and that is what makes them great. I've found a way to pack both into this deck.</p>
<p>First up is the devilishly simple one, and the best one in the deck: the classic combination of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Isochron Scepter" href="#" target="_blank">Isochron Scepter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dramatic Reversal" href="#" target="_blank">Dramatic Reversal</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>Beautiful. This is the main combo that we want to assemble in this deck. Two open mana and the listed cards above, and then finding a way to win becomes trivial. Now onto the excitingly complicated one.</p>
<p>Combining the powers of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kilo, Apogee Mind" href="#" target="_blank">Kilo, Apogee Mind</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Magosi, the Waterveil" href="#" target="_blank">Magosi, the Waterveil</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Resourceful Defense" href="#" target="_blank">Resourceful Defense</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to give us infinite turns.</p>

<p>I don't think that without <a href="https://commanderspellbook.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Commander Spellbook</a>, I would be able to explain the above combo with any form of confidence. Either way, it's one of many combos in this deck, and that's one reason that Kilo is a "busted" commander.</p>
<p>I'd go so far as to say that Kilo is the epitome of a <a href="https://commanderspellbook.com/find-my-combos/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">combotastic</a> commander. With 34 combos inside and another 298 possible combos that would only need a single card addition, I'm living in the fast lane with this deck.</p>
<p>Never fear, though, Kilo does have plenty of cool lines that can be taken if you want a bit more spice when it comes to winning the game.</p>
<h2>Spice, Spice, Baby</h2>
<p>They say variety is the spice of life, and this deck has a fair bit of spice jammed inside the 99.</p>
<p>This is a proliferation deck after all, and one of the best proliferate cards comes courtesy of <em>Universes Beyond: Fallout</em>. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Radstorm" href="#" target="_blank">Radstorm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> benefits significantly from the infinite storm count generated thanks to our Dramatic Scepter combo. And with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Prologue to Phyresis" href="#" target="_blank">Prologue to Phyresis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and a few other spells, I can kill a table thanks to poison counters if I so choose.</p>

<p>And since Radstorm is an instant, I can use it to speed up a clock on the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Darksteel Reactor" href="#" target="_blank">Darksteel Reactor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> living in the deck.</p>
<p>One final combo I want to mention in the deck involves an overlooked card from <em>Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth</em>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="There and Back Again" href="#" target="_blank">There and Back Again</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Now I did lie to you at the start of the article by saying "The combat step is irrelevant." It's just close enough to irrelevant for this deck that using this combo would be akin to a bank robber going to plan E when executing a heist.</p>

<p>Infinity is the name of the game when it comes to Kilo.</p>
<h2>PSA</h2>
<p>Now, I like Kilo. I like Kilo quite a bit. This is a very cool card, and one that I'm glad they showed off early. But I do think that it needs to come with a warning label. I built this deck as a Bracket 4 deck that's all in and fairly labeled as a "glass cannon." I don't think this is the only way that you can build Kilo, but I don't believe that anyone you play with will believe you when you tell them you have no combos in your Kilo deck.</p>

<p>A commander that's this easy to combo with is going to catch some strays, so I built this deck without going full cEDH, but I wanted to go as close as I could. That's why I run cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deflecting Swat" href="#" target="_blank">Deflecting Swat</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fierce Guardianship" href="#" target="_blank">Fierce Guardianship</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for protection, fast mana, such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mana Vault" href="#" target="_blank">Mana Vault</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and some truly hated cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Smothering Tithe" href="#" target="_blank">Smothering Tithe</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The One Ring" href="#" target="_blank">The One Ring</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Punches for this deck were not going to be pulled.</p>
<p>But that's not the only thing that can be done with Kilo. While players might not believe you at the start when you tell them you're using Kilo for a <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/planeswalkers/jeskai" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jeskai Planeswalker</a> deck, trust that they'll come around the first time Kilo is tapped to add a counter to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jace Beleren" href="#" target="_blank">Jace Beleren</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<h2>On the Edge</h2>
<p>I'm more excited than I have been all year for the release of <em>Edge of Eternities</em>. I might not end up building a deck with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kilo, Apogee Mind" href="#" target="_blank">Kilo, Apogee Mind</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and it's too early to tell if I want to put it into my personal Jeskai Superfriends list. But I will be looking to see what everyone does with this once players can get their hands on it.</p>

<p>Lands is one of my favorite strategies in Commander. Something about the idea about taking a pile of the most commonly disregarded card type and weaponizing it against unsuspecting opponents just tickles my fancy. When <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Szarel, Genesis Shepherd" href="#" target="_blank">Szarel, Genesis Shepherd</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was revealed, from <em>Edge of Eternities</em>, I knew I had to cover it.</p>

<p>A <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crucible of Worlds" href="#" target="_blank">Crucible of Worlds</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that sits in the command zone and gives you access to Jund (<span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-b" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>) cards is simply too sweet for this lands player to resist. In this deck tech, I'll tackle <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Szarel, Genesis Shepherd" href="#" target="_blank">Szarel, Genesis Shepherd</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and find out if this commander can meet my sky-high expectations.</p>
<h2>What Does Szarel, Genesis Shepherd Do?</h2>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Szarel, Genesis Shepherd" href="#" target="_blank">Szarel, Genesis Shepherd</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a 2/5 Insect Druid for five mana that grants the ability to play lands from the graveyard. That's not all, though! Whenever you sacrifice a nontoken permanent, Szarel puts a number of +1/+1 counters equal to its power onto a creature.</p>
<p>The standout interaction with this card is fetchlands, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wooded Foothills" href="#" target="_blank">Wooded Foothills</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bloodstained Mire" href="#" target="_blank">Bloodstained Mire</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which can be sacrificed to trigger Szarel and then played from the graveyard to repeat the process.</p>
<p>Szarel is going to play very similarly to other lands commanders, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Necrobloom" href="#" target="_blank">The Necrobloom</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Azusa, Lost but Seeking" href="#" target="_blank">Azusa, Lost but Seeking</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, or even <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Radha, Heart of Keld" href="#" target="_blank">Radha, Heart of Keld</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (which <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/60-to-100-turning-legacy-lands-into-a-commander-deck" target="_blank" rel="noopener">I wrote about</a> a while ago!). The combos that these decks look to assemble, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dark Depths" href="#" target="_blank">Dark Depths</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thespian&#039;s Stage" href="#" target="_blank">Thespian&#039;s Stage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and the play patterns of using effects that recur lands from the graveyard paired with effects that grant additional land plays each turn are all pretty much the same.</p>
<p>The variations come in the form of different color restrictions and each commander serving a different role in that engine. The thing that makes Szarel, Genesis Shepherd stand out is that its the only commander that plays the role of a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crucible of Worlds" href="#" target="_blank">Crucible of Worlds</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> from the command zone.</p>
<p>If I had to place <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Szarel, Genesis Shepherd" href="#" target="_blank">Szarel, Genesis Shepherd</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> into a definitive category, I'd call it a land-based aggro deck. This deck's plan is sticking Szarel on the board and stacking up counters on our creatures while playing multiple fetchlands from the graveyard each turn. Then, land-based combos and <em>Landfall</em> payoffs provide solid backup plans.</p>
<p>I'm incredibly excited to delve into this one.</p>
<h2>Key Cards for Szarel, Genesis Shepherd</h2>

<p>Since Szarel can't put +1/+1 counters on itself, it'll be critical to build a board of creatures that can maximize the benefit from Szarel's counters.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Halana and Alena, Partners" href="#" target="_blank">Halana and Alena, Partners</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was the first card that popped into my mind when Szarel was spoiled. It's perfect. You sacrifice a land, put Szarel's counters onto Halana and Alena, then at the beginning of combat Halana and Alena grows Szarel's power so your creatures can receive even more counters next turn.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scythecat Cub" href="#" target="_blank">Scythecat Cub</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bristly Bill, Spine Sower" href="#" target="_blank">Bristly Bill, Spine Sower</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> create a similar engine with Szarel as well. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scythecat Cub" href="#" target="_blank">Scythecat Cub</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tifa Lockhart" href="#" target="_blank">Tifa Lockhart</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are both creatures with trample that can become lethal threats on a turn that you play multiple fetchlands.</p>

<p>One of my favorite parts of building around a given lands commander is getting to construct an engine that covers the functions that the commander can't.</p>
<p>Szarel is just the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crucible of Worlds" href="#" target="_blank">Crucible of Worlds</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effect, so the 99 will need to cover the other functions, like additional land plays. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Azusa, Lost but Seeking" href="#" target="_blank">Azusa, Lost but Seeking</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and many cards like her are here to cover that. Recurring one fetchland every turn with Szarel's ability is a decent floor, but recurring two, three, or potentially even more than that each turn is where the real power is.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Gitrog Monster" href="#" target="_blank">The Gitrog Monster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> provides an extra land play, a card draw engine, and a sacrifice outlet for lands that can't sacrifice themselves. That sacrifice outlet is also critical to maximize other forms of recursion, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Life from the Loam" href="#" target="_blank">Life from the Loam</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Channeling a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Boseiju, Who Endures" href="#" target="_blank">Boseiju, Who Endures</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or cycling a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sheltered Thicket" href="#" target="_blank">Sheltered Thicket</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, replaying it with Szarel's ability, then sacrificing it to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Gitrog Monster" href="#" target="_blank">The Gitrog Monster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and picking it back up with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Life from the Loam" href="#" target="_blank">Life from the Loam</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to repeat the process is precisely the kind of incremental value I'm looking for in a lands deck.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Field of the Dead"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Boseiju, Who Endures"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Urza&#039;s Saga"></div></div>
<p>The most important part of every lands deck is the lands! There are so many subtle interactions and tiny details in the mana base that fully explaining everything would take up more than one article, but I'll highlight a few that I think are important.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Field of the Dead" href="#" target="_blank">Field of the Dead</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can generate an absurd amount of tokens in a single turn when this deck's engine is firing on all cylinders. The Zombie tokens it generates are also excellent targets for Szarel's +1/+1 counters.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Urza&#039;s Saga" href="#" target="_blank">Urza&#039;s Saga</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is another token producer that's also able to tutor zero- and one-mana artifacts. I've included a small suite of targets to grab with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Urza&#039;s Saga" href="#" target="_blank">Urza&#039;s Saga</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s third chapter ability, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lavaspur Boots" href="#" target="_blank">Lavaspur Boots</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Ozolith" href="#" target="_blank">The Ozolith</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, to ensure that the card has enough to do in games where you end up playing it multiple times.</p>
<h2>How Does This Szarel, Genesis Shepherd Commander Deck Win?</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Dark Depths"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Jeska, Thrice Reborn"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Xenagos, God of Revels"></div></div>
<p>The primary win condition for this deck is getting into the red zone with giant creatures. Going tall is much faster than going wide in a deck that can stack up +1/+1 counters on creatures with trample as much as this deck can.</p>
<p>The token that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dark Depths" href="#" target="_blank">Dark Depths</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> makes presents a fast clock that can swing in for lethal damage very quickly, especially when paired with additional pump effects like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jeska, Thrice Reborn" href="#" target="_blank">Jeska, Thrice Reborn</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Xenagos, God of Revels" href="#" target="_blank">Xenagos, God of Revels</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. However, the real beauty of this deck is that literally any creature can become big enough to kill someone.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Titania, Protector of Argoth"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Scute Swarm"></div></div>
<p>This deck isn't lacking options to go wide either! <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scute Swarm" href="#" target="_blank">Scute Swarm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in particular is known for getting out of hand quickly. Grindy games where lots of removal gets pointed at my biggest threats will often come down to several thousand Scute Swarm tokens finishing the job. I'm normally reluctant to include cards like Scute Swarm due to the logistical difficulties of representing board states with 3,000 tokens, but in this case I decided the upside was worth the potential inconvenience.</p>

<p>Finally, if all else fails, there's always the win condition of extinguishing your opponents' will to continue playing.</p>
<p>This deck is better than any other at recurring <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Strip Mine" href="#" target="_blank">Strip Mine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wasteland" href="#" target="_blank">Wasteland</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I freely admit, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Strip Mine" href="#" target="_blank">Strip Mine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> locks are a guilty pleasure of mine and that definitely had an impact on my excitement to build Szarel. It may not be for every play group, but at the "anything goes" types of tables I play at, there is nothing I love more than firing off <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wasteland" href="#" target="_blank">Wasteland</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> after Wasteland at my opponents' unsuspecting lands.</p>
<p>Admittedly, I think this deck is likely winning via other means too quickly for this to come up, but the option makes me feel confident about the deck's capacity in longer games.</p>

<p>This deck is an absolute blast. Going forward, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Szarel, Genesis Shepherd" href="#" target="_blank">Szarel, Genesis Shepherd</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will be my automatic recommendation to anyone looking to build a land-centric strategy in Commander. I'd tentatively place this deck in Bracket 3 (Upgraded) with the caveat that cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wasteland" href="#" target="_blank">Wasteland</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Strip Mine" href="#" target="_blank">Strip Mine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> might not fly at every table and is something I'd recommend discussing with tables ahead of time.</p>

Szarel, Genesis Shepherd Deck Tech

<p>Wizards of the Coast has announced two new formats for Commander play, starting with <em>Edge of Eternities</em>. They're both awfully familiar to players who've been around the block for a bit. That said, Wizards is making an effort to revitalize them for a modern player base. However, do these formats hit the mark? Read on and find out more!</p>
<h2>2-Headed Giant Commander</h2>
<p>The first of these two Commander formats is 2-Headed Giant. This format pits two teams of two players each against each other in head-to-head combat. Players have a shared life total (of 60, in the Commander context) and can block attacking creatures for each other. Other rules apply, including the other standardized rules for Commander.</p>
<p>Wizards of the Coast introduced this revitalization of 2HG in <a href="https://wpn.wizards.com/en/event/two-headed-giant-commander-night-edge-of-eternities">a Wizards Play Network article</a> regarding <em>Edge of Eternities</em> events. You can read that piece for more information about this format!</p>
<h2><em>Edge of Eternities</em> Commander Box League</h2>
<p>The second and final "new" Commander format is the Commander Box League. This format takes the unofficial Commander Boxling League and changes key points from it in a way that fundamentally challenges Commander's core rules and spirit.</p>
<p>According to <a href="https://wpn.wizards.com/en/event/edge-of-eternities-commander-box-league">WPN's article on this league</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>After players open their Play Booster box, they construct a 60-card Commander deck from the contents. <em>Buy-a-Box and Commander promos may not be used in deck building.</em></p>
<ul>
<li>Decks may include multiple copies of cards opened from the Play Booster.</li>
<li>Any legal commander opened is allowed.</li>
<li>Color identity rules in deck building are ignored; players may build decks with any colors they want, regardless of their commander's color identity. <em>Note: commander color identity still applies when cards refer to color identity (for example, with Arcane Signet).</em></li>
</ul>
<p>Players may adjust their decks between games using cards from their Play Booster box.</p></blockquote>
<p>The fundamental differences between this and Commander as a whole are stark. As a result, the new format's rules have left many players scratching their heads about why. <em>Magic</em> veteran <strong>Brian David-Marshall</strong> <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/bdm.bsky.social/post/3lseiqpv7xc2m">had this to say on social media</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>The difference between “Box League” and a “Boxing League” (the latter being the format I designed with [Commander format founder <strong>Sheldon Menery</strong>]) is that Boxing League is about building a Commander legal deck. Color identity, 100 card, singleton etc. only exception is Playtest cards in Mystery Boosters or stuff like that.</p></blockquote>
<p>To this, <em>Magic</em> personality <strong>Brian Kibler</strong> responded, "It's odd to call something a Commander format when it doesn't follow most of the rules of Commander at all."</p>
<h2>Commander on the <em>Edge</em></h2>

Edge Of Eternities: Two New Commander Formats Announced

<p>Starting with <em>Edge of Eternities</em>, <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/edge-of-eternities-rules-update-vehicles-can-be-commanders/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">all legendary Vehicles (and Spacecrafts) with a power/toughness box will be eligible as commanders</a>. With this announcement, I've devised the ten best legendary Vehicle commander cards that already exist in Commander.</p>
<p>Let's take a look at some of these fantastic rides and how you can make the most of them in your next Commander game.</p>
<h2>Honorable Mention</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Shorikai, Genesis Engine"></div></div>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shorikai, Genesis Engine" href="#" target="_blank">Shorikai, Genesis Engine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a powerhouse of a card.</p>
<p>As you may guess, any Vehicle commander making creatures that can crew your commander is going to be super powerful. Furthermore, if it can accrue value for you in other ways, that's amazing too.</p>
<p>Shorikai is all of this and an oppressively strong body to boot. I would have made Shorikai our #1 pick... If not for the fact that it was already eligible as a commander.</p>
<p>In this article, I wanted to highlight the Vehicle commanders that weren't already there. Share the limelight, Shorikai!</p>
<h2>#10. Parhelion II</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Parhelion II"></div></div>
<p>It's no surprise that many players, upon learning about this new rule change, flocked to the idea of making Parhelion II their Vehicle commander. However, with 21 total options available (besides Shorikai), Parhelion II is arguably the <em>worst</em> of the best.</p>
<p>It's a middling commander. For one, while it makes bodies, it already costs a staggering <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-6" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> to cast and four power to crew. Sure, it can then replace any crew with its 4/4 Angel tokens, but this clunker of a Vehicle's crew cost can't easily withstand board wipes without added help.</p>
<p>Don't get me wrong, it's still a force to be reckoned with in the late game, but it's not going to shine through other mono-white options.</p>
<p>Plus, it isn't even the top mono-white option on <em>this</em> list. Nevertheless, it's strong enough as a battlecruiser to make #10 on my list.</p>
<h2>#9. The Falcon, Airship Restored</h2>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Falcon, Airship Restored" href="#" target="_blank">The Falcon, Airship Restored</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a new option from the <em>Final Fantasy</em> Commander decks. It's a formidable option because it can not only recur a creature upon connection, it also has the ability to recur itself from the graveyard.</p>
<p>As such, The Falcon is a commander tax evader. This has always been a powerful ability to have on a commander (e.g., <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Derevi, Empyrial Tactician" href="#" target="_blank">Derevi, Empyrial Tactician</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>).</p>
<p>Alongside its reasonable size and fairly low crew cost of 2, The Falcon is a fair choice for my #9 pick.</p>
<h2>#8. The Indomitable</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="The Indomitable"></div></div>
<p>At #8 is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Indomitable" href="#" target="_blank">The Indomitable</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Another tax evader from the grave, this flagship of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Admiral Beckett Brass" href="#" target="_blank">Admiral Beckett Brass</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a neat choice for either a Pirate deck or a Vehicle deck. Or a combination! It's a choice I could endorse here.</p>
<p>This card is a #8 because of the amount of value it accrues as a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Coastal Piracy" href="#" target="_blank">Coastal Piracy</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>/<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bident of Thassa" href="#" target="_blank">Bident of Thassa</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> variant. Also, as a trampling 6/6, it has built-in pseudo-evasion for combat, and that's really strong.</p>
<p>Crew 3 is nothing to worry about, and if The Indomitable goes down, you may have already tapped three Pirates to facilitate its return!</p>
<h2>#7. Golden Argosy</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Golden Argosy"></div></div>
<p>The #7 pick for this list is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Golden Argosy" href="#" target="_blank">Golden Argosy</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. This ship is really funky. It wants to blink the creatures that crew it, but is stuck in colorless - its only real flaw here.</p>
<p>I wouldn't even fully call it a <em>flaw</em>, though, because decks can be built in colorless to work around or even exploit that fact. There are plenty of artifact creatures, and even some colorless nonartifact creatures, that can make the most of a blink effect such as this Vehicle's.</p>
<p>To make Golden Argosy your Vehicle commander is a choice, to be sure, but it can't be said that it'll always be a bad one.</p>
<h2>#6. RMS Titanic</h2>

<p>The <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="RMS Titanic" href="#" target="_blank">RMS Titanic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, in all of its memetic glory, is my #6 pick for best Vehicle commander to exist currently.</p>
<p>As a meme, the deck is a bad one. (This won't stop me from writing up a deck tech about the memetic version, but even still, the deck won't be about a Bracket 2!)</p>
<p>However, if you're making the RMS Titanic with a serious, dedicated mindset, this deck could be <em>very</em> potent. There are more than enough artifact synergies in mono-red to make a deck like the RMS Titanic do work in context.</p>
<p>Still, there are better non-Vehicles eligible as commanders that do similar things. Towing a line between bad and pretty good, the RMS Titanic also tows the midpoint of this list.</p>
<h2>#5. The Regalia</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="The Regalia"></div></div>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Regalia" href="#" target="_blank">The Regalia</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is another colorless Vehicle commander option and is #5 on my list. Being colorless hurts it a bit for this ranking, much like Golden Argosy, but more decks can utilize The Regalia in context.</p>
<p>Namely, The Regalia is an interesting, if decidedly withheld, choice for a commander in an Eldrazi kindred deck. It also works for decks that just want to ramp up to expensive, splashy colorless spells.</p>
<p>Heck, there are plenty of Vehicles that would love this as a commander, not to mention the sheer mass of expensive artifacts elsewhere that could benefit from more ramp in the command zone. The crew cost of 1 is also really nice here, not to mention having haste.</p>
<p>It's an easy, intuitive card to use, overall, but there are some better options with colors, which is why The Regalia is <em>only</em> my #5 pick.</p>
<h2>#4. The Prydwen, Steel Flagship</h2>

<p>Coming on at #4 is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Prydwen, Steel Flagship" href="#" target="_blank">The Prydwen, Steel Flagship</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. This beast of a flying Vehicle is certainly stronger than Parhelion II, due to its passive ability synergizing with its crew cost, which then enables you to attack with The Prydwen at least one turn before most players can reliably cast Parhelion II.</p>
<p>Sure, it has fewer keywords, but The Prydwen makes up for this with better stats and a much stronger token-generating ability in a general sense.</p>
<p>In a more perfect scenario, you're swinging in with The Prydwen <em>and</em> its many 2/2 Knight tokens every turn. Plus, those Knights will more often be 4/4s than 2/2s most turns you're attacking with them.</p>
<h2>#3. Esika's Chariot</h2>

<p>I really appreciate <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Esika&#039;s Chariot" href="#" target="_blank">Esika&#039;s Chariot</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as a Vehicle commander. As my #3 choice, I would suggest that a <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/tokens/mono-green" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tokens-matter</a> build is best for the card. Fortunately, mono-green has plenty of ways to make that kind of deck possible.</p>
<p>One way to make Esika's Chariot shine is with cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Idol of Oblivion" href="#" target="_blank">Idol of Oblivion</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tarmogoyf Nest" href="#" target="_blank">Tarmogoyf Nest</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Both create some really strong token creatures right away. Then, the attacking Chariot can do a lot to make that one token into many.</p>
<p>The card is great, plain and simple. There are two better options for Vehicles in the command zone, though.</p>
<h2>#2. The Last Ride</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="The Last Ride"></div></div>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Last Ride" href="#" target="_blank">The Last Ride</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is my second pick in this list. The best way to describe this commander is this: Don't ever animate it unless you need a trigger from its death.</p>
<p>What you're doing instead with The Last Ride is playing it on turns two or three, and then capitalizing on its <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Greed" href="#" target="_blank">Greed</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>-esque activated ability.</p>
<p>This deck is for fans of the aforementioned Greed, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vilis, Broker of Blood" href="#" target="_blank">Vilis, Broker of Blood</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dark Confidant" href="#" target="_blank">Dark Confidant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, or even <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Griselbrand" href="#" target="_blank">Griselbrand</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (who, as of writing, remains Grisel-banned). These cards (barring the last one) would be fantastic additions to a deck like The Last Ride.</p>
<p>And at just <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-b" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> for a cost, you can't really go wrong!</p>
<p>That leaves us with our final, #1 pick for this list of best Vehicle commanders. What got there in an absolute photo finish?</p>
<h2>Best Vehicle Commander</h2>

<p>The <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jackdaw" href="#" target="_blank">Jackdaw</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>!</p>
<p>Jackdaw is a two-color legendary Vehicle (one of only two, the other being <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Belligerent" href="#" target="_blank">The Belligerent</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>), and a fantastic choice for a commander.</p>
<p>Being able to play this card in a blue-red artifact-centric shell is no joke. The ability to discard your hand and immediately draw maybe six or seven fresh, new cards is amazing.</p>
<p>It fuels <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Daretti, Scrap Savant" href="#" target="_blank">Daretti, Scrap Savant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Locust God" href="#" target="_blank">The Locust God</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and even the semi-thematic <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Captain Howler, Sea Scourge" href="#" target="_blank">Captain Howler, Sea Scourge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (if you have an extra combat at the ready)!</p>
<p>That's why, of all the potential Vehicles that could be your next commander, I endorse Jackdaw as the priority pick here.</p>

<p>According to a recent article on DailyMTG, <em>Magic: The Gathering</em>'s main news hub, beginning with <em>Edge of Eternities</em>, art cards will no longer be included in Play Boosters. Instead, you can now only find art cards in Collector Boosters.</p>
<h2>The "Collecting <em>Edge of Eternities</em>" Article</h2>
<p>The article states the following about the rates for pulling art cards in Collector Boosters (section in <strong>bold</strong> typeface for relevance):</p>

<h2>The Internet's Reaction</h2>
<p>This change is largely ambivalent to whether fans like the cards or not. Many players actually <em>liked</em> art cards. However, they originally seemed to be firmly in the minority among players who had an opinion of the cards. According to one Redditor, "As the one person at my LGS who collects art cards this makes me very sad. Usually during drafts people just give me the art cards they open cause nobody else wants them, so I get why WotC is doing it. But still. Pain." Another said, "Oh, I must be part of the few that actually likes them, I have tons of tokens and can make more but the art cards feel distinctive and cool."</p>
<p>Despite my earlier statement, it seems that these comments were not drowned in an ocean of approval. This potentially leads us to believe that more players liked these cards than the public lets on. Nevertheless, you can now find art cards at a rate of approximately 1 in every 3 Collector Boosters. This potentially raises the scarcity of these aesthetic add-ins.</p>
<p>And speaking of add-ins, Wizards of the Coast has also officially announced <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/collecting-edge-of-eternities">an end to ad cards in Play Boosters</a> as well. Silver linings, one could suppose!</p>

This change is massive and opens up a ton of design space for <em>Magic: The Gathering</em>.</p>

<p><em>Magic</em> Designer <strong>Gavin Verhey</strong> sums up the change to the Commander format with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w75DcnrdoTc">a six-minute Good Morning Magic video on YouTube</a>:</p>

<p>In short, the rules change is one that Wizards wanted to apply for a while, but for a series of different reasons at different times, the format's shift had to wait until <em>Edge of Eternities</em>. Additionally, we have learned through this video that both precons from the new set contain a legendary Spacecraft to use as an alternate commander.</p>

<h2>What is the Rule Change?</h2>
<p>While the Comprehensive Rules have yet to officially update with these rules, here is the main idea:</p>
<ul>
<li>Starting with <em>Edge of Eternities</em>, legendary Vehicles and Spacecraft cards will be eligible to lead a Commander deck.</li>
<li>To be fully eligible, the card has to be legendary and have a power/toughness box in its card rules.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Is This Impactful?</h3>
<p>In a word, this is currently not a highly impactful change. It's largely just for fun, but <span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">it<em>'s</em> still foreseeable as a</span> permanent change to the format. This doesn't change <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shorikai, Genesis Engine" href="#" target="_blank">Shorikai, Genesis Engine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s functionality, but it allows other Vehicles printed previously to share in that design space.</p>

<p>Some of the Vehicles now affected by this change are pretty cool, though. For one, you can now play <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Esika&#039;s Chariot" href="#" target="_blank">Esika&#039;s Chariot</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as a commander, or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="RMS Titanic" href="#" target="_blank">RMS Titanic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, or even <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Parhelion II" href="#" target="_blank">Parhelion II</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. In fact, one interviewee I spoke with in the past for <a href="https://commandersherald.com/interview-dr-wendi-sierra-bethesda-scholar-on-the-new-fallout-decks/">Commander's Herald</a>, <strong>Dr. Wendi Sierra</strong>, has a Parhelion II "Big Angel Party Bus" deck. Frankly, I'm sure she's thrilled about this new change to the rules.</p>

<p>On the night of Thursday, June 19th, Wizards of the Coast officially revealed the full card for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tezzeret, Cruel Captain" href="#" target="_blank">Tezzeret, Cruel Captain</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. This <em>Edge of Eternities</em> card is going to be a hit amongst artifact fans of all kinds! But what does the card do, and why is it such a hyped centerpiece for the set? Read on, and learn more!</p>
<h2>Tezzeret's Various In-Game Applications</h2>
<p>Currently, neither we nor Scryfall have a good render of the card handy, as most of the assets available come from photographs of the render. However, the shots we have, all thanks to fans at MagicCon Las Vegas's Black Lotus VIP Lounge, show a complete card. As such, we feel it appropriate to share it here:</p>

<p>Tezzeret, Cruel Captain is a 4-loyalty planeswalker card for <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-3" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> with no conventional means to gain loyalty. However, he has a <em>very</em> strong triggered ability that gains him the loyalty needed to survive. And boy howdy, does he ever gain it! Gaining one loyalty counter whenever an artifact you control enters, Tezzeret <em>could</em> activate his -7 ultimate loyalty ability on the turn he comes in. However, he's more useful for his -3 ability, which tutors up an artifact of mana value 1 or less. This is powerful in <em>so many formats</em>. Many Commander players will automatically recognize that this Tezzeret can immediately tutor up a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sol Ring" href="#" target="_blank">Sol Ring</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>And don't misunderstand me. Sol Ring is great, but Vintage players are apt to want to use Tezzeret to tutor up a Moxen card like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mox Sapphire" href="#" target="_blank">Mox Sapphire</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, or a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Black Lotus" href="#" target="_blank">Black Lotus</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. In Modern, players will be able to tutor up a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mox Opal" href="#" target="_blank">Mox Opal</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, previously banned until very recently. Legacy's expansive player base seems to have it best here. They are able to tutor up <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lion&#039;s Eye Diamond" href="#" target="_blank">Lion&#039;s Eye Diamond</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or basically any Mox that's legal in the format.</p>
<h2>Tezzeret, Living Life on the <em>Edge of Eternities</em></h2>
<p>This card is undeniably strong. Furthermore, his art, illustrated by <em>Magic</em> artist <strong><a href="https://www.rahnart.com/">Chris Rahn</a></strong>, is stunning and dramatic, perfectly fitting for a space opera-style setting.</p>
<p>How would you use Tezzeret, Cruel Captain? Hopefully, the card has its use in <em>Edge of Eternities</em> Limited, so it's not a bust to open him in your Draft or Prerelease Sealed pools. Nevertheless, the card is fantastic.</p>

Edge Of Eternities - Tezzeret, Cruel Captain Officially Revealed

<p><em>Edge of Eternities</em> (<em>EOE</em>) is close to unveiling its first previews; they may arrive as soon as Friday, June 20th. The set and setting both show potential and have many implications for the known <em>Magic</em> Multiverse. However, since the advent of the <em>Universes Beyond</em> initiative, players have wondered what tie-ins might apply to a set like <em>EOE</em>.</p>
<p>This article aims to explore the potential of the space opera set and discern whether any particular intellectual properties mesh well with the potential that <em>Magic: The Gathering</em> could provide.</p>
<p>As such, I'll list a few options that seem feasible, as well as an Honorable Mention that isn't quite there for a few reasons. Before you inquire, <em>Star Wars</em> is a Disney property, as are <em>Firefly</em>, <em>Serenity</em>, and <em>The Fifth Element</em>, all by way of Fox. For that reason, we are not considering these for the potential of a tie-in. With that, let's (boldly) go!</p>
<h2>Honorable Mention: <em>Lost In Space</em> (1965)</h2>

<p><em>Lost In Space</em>, a television show from 1965, is my choice of an Honorable Mention for this article, as it's memorable for the few major iconic aspects it has.</p>
<p>However, while it's been remade into multiple films and even a Netflix show, the source material is a bit obscure for modern audiences. As <em>Magic</em> is a game with an intended demographic of 13+ years of age, many of this show's nuances would be lost on its younger players and collectors.</p>
<p>Furthermore, <em>Lost In Space</em> is a CBS property now, and as such is owned in part by Paramount, but it was originally a 20th Century Fox production. With Disney owning Fox and developing another rival card game, <em>Lost In Space</em> may not get the attention it might still need to shine.</p>
<h2>The <em>Dune</em> Series</h2>

<p>Author <strong>Frank Herbert</strong>'s magnum opus, the <em>Dune</em> novel series, was such a successful series that it received multiple films adapted from it. Legendary Pictures' <em>Dune</em> film series seems like the shoo-in for <em>Magic: The Gathering</em> to adapt into <em>Universes Beyond</em> (and rightly so, as Legendary is adapting <em>Magic</em> for the screen!).</p>
<p>However, it's also plausible that we could get the <em>Dune</em> of 1984, directed by the late, great <strong>David Lynch</strong>.</p>
<p>The <em>Dune</em> series as a whole already has a ton going for it. It's a space opera, and so it fits right into the timeline for <em>Edge of Eternities</em> to tie it into things. We recently got a card called <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sandworm" href="#" target="_blank">Sandworm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in <em>Final Fantasy</em> (a far cry from Shai-Hulud, yes, but a Sandworm nonetheless). Not to mention, <em>Outlaws of Thunder Junction</em> recently gave us a plethora of cards with the Desert subtype!</p>
<p>For these reasons and probably more, <em>Dune</em> could quite possibly be a tie-in we're on the verge of seeing.</p>
<h2><em>The Outer Worlds</em> (2019)</h2>

<p>In a world simultaneously plagued by a space race and the rat race, <em>The Outer Worlds</em> feels a bit on the money. However, as it has been pointed out to me, it too essentially has space operatic elements.</p>
<p>We already know that <em>Wizards of the Coast</em> really likes when a property they're adapting to <em>Universes Beyond</em> has something upcoming when the <em>Universes Beyond</em> adaptation releases. <em>Lord of the Rings</em> had <em>The Rings of Power</em> on Amazon Prime. <em>Fallout</em>'s television show came out around the same time its Commander decks did. And <em>Jurassic World: Dominion</em> was relatively fresh in players' minds when <em>Lost Caverns of Ixalan</em> came out.</p>
<p>With a sequel coming out later this year, <em>The Outer Worlds</em> might be a great choice for a tie-in with <em>Edge of Eternities</em>.</p>
<h2>The <em>Star Trek</em> Series</h2>

<p>Finally, and what I believe might be the most apt possibility for a tie-in with <em>Edge of Eternities</em>, we have the <em>Star Trek</em> series.</p>
<p>As <em>Star Wars</em>' biggest competitor for "greatest space opera," <em>Star Trek</em> is also an eligible space opera that players will resonate with most out of all the others. A more utopian look at the future of galactic peace than either <em>Star Wars</em> or <em>Dune</em>, Paramount Global also owns this property.</p>
<p>For those at home keeping score, Paramount Global is the entity that hosts shows like <em>SpongeBob Squarepants</em> and <em>Avatar: The Last Airbender</em> on its streaming service, Paramount+. If those two seem even a little bit familiar to you, it's no surprise. We previously got a <em>Universes Beyond</em> property for it (in <em>SpongeBob</em>'s case) or will later this year (in <em>ATLA</em>'s case).</p>
<p>So, in many ways, <em>Star Trek</em> is likely the most plausible option for a tie-in for <em>Edge of Eternities</em> out of all of these possibilities by far.</p>
