<p>Various polls exist out there on the internet trying to definitively rank the scariest horror subgenre. None of them seem to agree, which might be the scariest genre of all considering how fickle they reveal human nature to be.</p>
<p>To a person, the answer of what truly is the most terrifying variety of horror comes down to many, many factors. And then there are all the coulrophobic folks who skew the numbers against innocent clowns.</p>
<p>In <em>Magic: The Gathering, </em>horror has always been an arrow in the quiver of world-builders and artists. We've got entire settings devoted to the genre in <em>Innistrad </em>and <em>Duskmourn, </em>and even decidedly non-horror areas of <em>Magic </em>canon can't seem to help themselves in dabbling, just a little bit, into horror.</p>
<p>That's the result of a game in which Zombies, Vampires and other classic horror monsters are part of its fabric. <em>Magic's </em>a quilt of influence, and many squares are bloody.</p>
<p>And speaking of the aforementioned horror sets above, there are plenty of ghoulish cards contained within that players know and love. Many of them are rares and mythics, showcases for artists and designers to show exactly what kind of mess characters on those planes are getting into. We're all familiar with stuff like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Meathook Massacre" href="#" target="_blank">The Meathook Massacre</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Come Back Wrong" href="#" target="_blank">Come Back Wrong</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Army of the Damned" href="#" target="_blank">Army of the Damned</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and any number of other trope-heavy inclusions.</p>

<p>But there are also currently 30,554 distinct <em>Magic </em>cards that exist in physical form, with more being added every day. Sometimes even more frequently than that.</p>
<p>Sure, horror as a trope and genre from which to pull inspiration is relevant in <em>Duskmourn </em>or <em>Innistrad. </em>Horror abounds beyond those sets, however. And some of <em>Magic's </em>most macabre cards aren't tentpole mythics. Let's take a look at seven commons that went too hard into horror.</p>

<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Murder|EMN|97" href="#" target="_blank">Murder</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Can't get much more on-the-nose than Murder. There have been a number of versions of Murder, but every time an artist is tasked with creating the art, we center around a familiar motif.</p>
<p>And yes, I tagged the one version of the card that's <em>not </em>a common, but I also like that one the most. Sorry.</p>
<p>As for horror, most versions of Murder harken to the subgenre of Slashers. As the name implies, those center around a killer stalking a group of people. The killer's usually human, though often they feature supernatural elements that prevent them from being impeded by common means.</p>
<p>Jason Voorhees doesn't usually get stopped by traffic or the need to go to the bathroom, for example.</p>

<p>It's where the trope of the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cautious Survivor" href="#" target="_blank">Final Girl</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> comes from, and resonates with horror fans for the mostly believable and "possible in real life" aspect of it generating the terror. Slashers are not to be confused with occult horror, which also often features a person murdering teens but does so for the glory of Crom, or movies about assassins which are really just occupational narratives.</p>
<p>There's something very viscerally alarming about the possibility of your life being snuffed by anyone, anywhere, at any time. And that's what Murder evokes.</p>

<p>There are two things we all have in common: We all have bodies, and we all don't want bad things to happen to those bodies. That's the crux of body horror. There are microgenres within this subgenre that really get under the skin (pun intended), involving teeth, fingernails or eyeballs, but you can use your imagination. Or don't.</p>
<p>When it comes to <em>Magic, </em>though, body horror's actually pretty well represented. There are many cards that depict bad things happening to perfectly good body parts, and they're not all from <em>Duskmourn. </em>Though, to be fair, that set did lean heavily into the subgenre in its effort to shamelessly represent every horror subgenre there is.</p>
<p>Most commonly, body horror in <em>Magic </em>can be attributed to the influence of the Eldrazi, who warp and mangle bodies with no regard for their natural structure. But it's not just the Eldrazi who like to tinker with flesh.</p>
<p>And then there's Pulling Teeth. There's no reason <a href="https://www.pavelecart.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jim Pavelec</a> had to go so hard on a common from <em>Morningtide, </em>a set inspired by Celtic fairytale. However, if you dig into Pavelec's body of work (which you can do if you click that link), you'll see that he probably couldn't help himself.</p>
<p>In fact, Jim's one of <em>Magic's </em>horror flag-bearers, and any card assigned to him will likely have that edge.</p>

<p>What if your loved ones aren't really who they seem? What if there's something... off?</p>
<p>What if you aren't...you?</p>
<p>It's a question asked by plenty of horror media over the years, from <em>Invasion of the Body Snatchers </em>to <em>Fallout 4. </em>The idea that what you understand to be yourself, and what you understand to be the people closest to you, is inherently wrong: That's foundational to horror, and embodied most wholly in <em>Magic </em>by Phyrexia.</p>
<p>In <em>Dominaria United, </em>Dominaria was united, yes. Reading the set name explains the set name. Dominaria was united against the Phyrexian invasion, during which anyone, at any time, could have been an agent of the invaders, corrupted and only themselves by facsimile. They're Sleeper Agents, and they've been around for awhile.</p>

<p>There are actually several examples of Sleeper Agents in <em>Dominaria United, </em>but none of them are quite as alarming in their depiction as we see on Citizen's Arrest.</p>

<p>We've talked about getting murdered, getting your teeth pulled out by a dirty rope, and finding out your mom's actually an invading robotic horror from another dimension. But what if you're somehow able to protect yourself from all that, only to be perforated by the ethereal blade of otherworldly boogymen called Breathstealers?</p>
<p>There's nothing really all that scary about the card Breathstealer, obviously. As far as <em>Mirage-</em>era commons go, it's subpar, which is saying a lot. But what it represents, and the lore behind the creature, is where the horror derives. Breathstealers can enter any abode undetected, noiselessly, and kill with impunity.</p>
<p>Each life taken by a Breathstealer extends their own, and victims are nothing more than fuel - unless, of course, the victim's a child, in which case that child becomes a Breathstealer themselves, doomed to perpetuate the cycle of slaughter.</p>
<p>There's horror in other people, in our own bodies. But true horror might be the inexorable approach of death. And that's what Breathstealers represent.</p>
<p>Also, the card's one of very few in <em>Magic </em>that shows a decapitated human head, which is pretty gruesome in its own right. And since we're talking horror, here's some more!</p>

<p>This one could be considered murder like that depicted on, well, Murder, but if you know anything about the story of <em>Ixalan </em>you know there's an extra wrinkle involved.</p>
<p>Horror comes in many forms, but the one that likely resonates the deepest in today's world is horror surrounding the fanatical, as depicted on this particular card.</p>
<p>We all crave purpose. But when the pursuit of that purpose eclipses the rational, the result is the capacity to inflict great evil on the world. All it takes is a little misplaced conviction to turn man into monster. Or, in Vito's case, Vampire into monster. Monster into monster. More monster. You know what I mean.</p>
<p>There are several such examples of this in <em>Magic, </em>where blind zealotry justifies cruelty, spreads terror, and weaponizes obsession. Often this manifests with a sharp knife and an unwilling parting with a vital organ.</p>

<p>What if death isn't the culmination of horror, like it's been in previous entries? What if instead of a grand finale, you're cursed with a perpetual denouement?</p>
<p>That's a bit of what allows Zombie-themed horror to shamble on in perpetuity: the thought of knowing the eventuality of your body - your "self" - existing as a mindless monster causing harm to those you love. Or, in the case of Dutiful Return, serving as set decoration in the court of a fat dragon.</p>
<p>But like Zombies themselves, zombie horror has decayed into a shell of its former self, and in many cases today serve as a workaround for writers and filmmakers who seek to depict wonton violence against humanoids without all that pesky morality getting in the way. However, the inherent horror of ending up like the sad sack on Dutiful Return will always be the frigid heart of the subgenre.</p>
<p>In fact, <em>Khans of Tarkir </em>block is highly underrated when it comes to an interesting, more macabre take on the zombie trope. There are several examples of why if you're going to be reanimated into an undead thrall, it's probably best to avoid that happening on Tarkir.</p>

<p>Sure, there's the body horror trope of getting your teeth pulled, like we saw above. But there's an entire subsection of body horror exclusively dedicated to having eyes where eyes shouldn't be.</p>
<p>So much so, that over on Scryfall there's an <a href="https://tagger.scryfall.com/tags/artwork/eyes-where-they-shouldn-t-be" target="_blank" rel="noopener">entire art tag</a> dedicated to that very trope. Granted, many of those card selections are related to eyeball monsters like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phantasmal Vision" href="#" target="_blank">Phantasmal Vision</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Horror of Horrors" href="#" target="_blank">Horror of Horrors</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, or being tormented by disembodied eyes like on <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Eyes Everywhere" href="#" target="_blank">Eyes Everywhere</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and not so much the body horror of extra eyes on your person.</p>
<p>Think about it, though. What would you do if you woke up with a big ol' eyeball in your chest like Heather Hudson's version of the Initiates of the Ebon Hand? Think of how itchy a shirt would be.</p>
<p>And don't even get me started on gloves.</p>

7 Horror-Themed Magic Commons That Went Too Hard

<p><em><a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/eoe">Edge of Eternities</a></em> is here and has already taken Commander by storm. This set is filled with so many powerful new rares and mythics that it might be easy to miss some of the great cards hidden in its bulk. I know when you're opening packs, skipping right to the last few singles gets the adrenaline rushing, but I'm here to shine a spotlight on the cards that often get skipped over on that journey.</p>
<p>My name is <a href="https://linktr.ee/thetylerbucks">Tyler 'Savesya' Bucks</a>, and I've returned with another addition of <em>Bulk Up</em>, where I show off amazing commons and uncommons from <em>Magic</em>'s latest sets. This time around I'm going to have to leave out my usual deck suggestion for each card since there're just too many spells to get to this week, so let's dive into these new spells from <em><a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/eoe">Edge of Eternities</a></em> before they slip into the void known as your bulk piles!</p>
<h3>Desculpting Blast</h3>

<p>Kicking off our list today, we have a removal spell that I'm incredibly excited to include in a lot of my decks. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Desculpting Blast" href="#" target="_blank">Desculpting Blast</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is an instant-speed bounce spell for any nonland permanent on the board, but it also has a little bit of a twist: if it targets an attacking creature, you make a 1/1 flying token, which plenty of decks can take advantage of! A mini-<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aetherize" href="#" target="_blank">Aetherize</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can make for some fun blow out moments in a game.</p>
<h3>Pull Through the Weft</h3>

<p>Up next, we have an absolute powerhouse in graveyard decks. For five mana, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pull Through the Weft" href="#" target="_blank">Pull Through the Weft</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> returns two nonland permanents from your bin to your hand, then puts two lands from your 'yard onto the battlefield tapped. Just when your opponents thought they set you back a few steps, you ramp and get some big threats right back into your hand. If your graveyard is big enough, this card could feel like a tutor in some cases, getting you back exactly what you need in that moment.</p>
<h3>Susurian Voidborn</h3>

<p>Now, as you read this next inclusion, you might ask yourself the question “don’t we have plenty of cards that are just like this?” However, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Susurian Voidborn" href="#" target="_blank">Susurian Voidborn</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> comes with an extra wrinkle because of that warp cost. Sure, this Vampire is worth that full three-mana price tag, but since you can warp it for a single mana, you could bring this out just in time to cast a big board wipe. Also, don't overlook that this works with artifacts as well, making all your <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Treasure|TFIN|36" href="#" target="_blank">Treasure</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> tokens even better than before.</p>
<h3>Starfield Shepherd</h3>

<p>Let's highlight another creature with a warp cost: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Starfield Shepherd" href="#" target="_blank">Starfield Shepherd</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Cards like this are always great to have around since they can offer you so many different options throughout the game. Not only does it find you a land or a creature with mana value 1 or less, but it can do it twice. Warping it early for only two mana can assist you when you’re in the set-up phases of the game; then, when you cast it later on, you'll get that value all over again on top of a great flying creature to assist you in the late game.</p>
<h3>Scour for Scrap</h3>

<p>Keeping with tutors, for four mana <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scour for Scrap" href="#" target="_blank">Scour for Scrap</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> finds you any artifact in your deck and/or returns an artifact from your graveyard to your hand. Both of these abilities are strong, but when you staple them together, it’s even crazier. In most artifact lists, this basically draws you the best card in your deck, and the strongest threat your opponents have answered that game, at instant speed, no less!</p>
<h3>Meltstrider Eulogist</h3>

<p>Our next creature is only really suited for +1/+1 counter decks, but it's a slam dunk for those lists. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Meltstrider Eulogist" href="#" target="_blank">Meltstrider Eulogist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> draws you a card whenever one of those buffed up creatures of yours dies, which is a powerful ability for only three mana. Plenty of decks out there add counters to their whole board or have creatures that naturally enter with them, so even if your opponent cuts down your team, you’ll continue to draw into more recruits for your ranks.</p>
<h3>Survey Mechan</h3>

<p>This next card is a headscratcher, so bear with me. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Survey Mechan" href="#" target="_blank">Survey Mechan</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a 1/3 flyer with hexproof, which is all fine and good, but its final ability is why it's here today. For ten mana you basically get to cast <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lightning Helix" href="#" target="_blank">Lightning Helix</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ancestral Recall" href="#" target="_blank">Ancestral Recall</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>I know, that sounds like too high of a cost. However, the ability costs <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-x" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> less to activate for each differently named land you control, which means in decks with three or more colors that effect could be easily cut in half.</p>

<h2>Double-Spell Enhancer Cards</h2>
<p>There’s plenty of decks these days that naturally double spell during their games. As new cards continue to get better and cheaper to cast, it’s easier to chain spells together in a single turn. So, while these next three cards would of course be great in a deck built around <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Council of Four" href="#" target="_blank">The Council of Four</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, they can also fit in the 99 of a lot of other commanders out there. While we look them over, think about your own decks and see if any of these spark inspiration for you.</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Station Monitor"></div></div></h3>
<p>Our first creature that pays you off for casting two spells a turn is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Station Monitor" href="#" target="_blank">Station Monitor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. A cheap Azorius (<span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span><span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>) Lizard that makes you a flying Drone that can only block other flyers when you double spell. This is a great rate for this effect, since you could cast this and another card immediately after to get a token right away. The fact that it only costs two mana makes this great early on since you can build up a board of flyers for simply moving forward with your gameplan.</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Sunstar Lightsmith"></div></div></h3>
<p>Next up we have a creature that fits perfectly into decks centered around counters: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sunstar Lightsmith" href="#" target="_blank">Sunstar Lightsmith</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. When you cast your second spell, it grows with a +1/+1 counter and you draw a card. Not only does this assist with filling your hand, but it also feeds into any other synergies your deck might be built around. Long gone are the days of white not having card advantage, and this is just more proof of that.</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Uthros Psionicist"></div></div></h3>
<p>From card advantage to mana advantage, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Uthros Psionicist" href="#" target="_blank">Uthros Psionicist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is here to make your second spell a lot cheaper. If you have a blue deck that tends to have a lower curve or is filled with cantrips, this Jellyfish can really come in handy for you. Turning an <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Opt" href="#" target="_blank">Opt</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> into a mana reduction for a bigger spell to follow it up with is already amazing, but when paired with cheap colorless cards, like an <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arcane Signet" href="#" target="_blank">Arcane Signet</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for example, you're getting into free spell territory.</p>
<h2>Lander Token Makers</h2>
<p>Closing out this edition of <em>Bulk Up</em>, we’re going to take a quick look at each common and uncommon way to make <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lander" href="#" target="_blank">Lander</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> tokens that I think might be close enough to playable. Now, a lot of these aren’t the most efficient ways to ramp in Commander, but they do offer some interesting options for nongreen decks that prefer getting out more lands over just using mana rocks. Let’s take a look at each of these at light speed before wrapping up for the day!</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Sunstar Expansionist"></div></div></h3>
<p>Up first is a two-mana white creature that makes you a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lander" href="#" target="_blank">Lander</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> token when it enters if an opponent has more lands than you. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sunstar Expansionist" href="#" target="_blank">Sunstar Expansionist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is pretty solid, entering early enough to get your ramp train rolling, while also getting a power boost from that <em>Landfall</em> trigger.</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Scrounge for Eternity"></div></div></h3>
<p>Recursion and a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lander" href="#" target="_blank">Lander</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> token are just a few of the upsides that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scrounge for Eternity" href="#" target="_blank">Scrounge for Eternity</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> brings our way. I think this card is incredible, especially if your deck already has sacrifice synergies. Plus, that midgame ramp is just icing on the aristocratic cake.</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Terrapact Intimidator"></div></div></h3>
<p>This next card, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Terrapact Intimidator" href="#" target="_blank">Terrapact Intimidator</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, may require some politics to be playable. Here’s my advice: when you cast this on turn two, give an opponent a deal that they let you make two <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lander" href="#" target="_blank">Lander</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> tokens, and you’ll attack any player they please with this Kavu for the rest of the game. Try that out and let me know how it goes!</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Divert Disaster"></div></div></h3>
<p>Speaking of politics, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Divert Disaster" href="#" target="_blank">Divert Disaster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> might put you on a player's list of enemies. If you wait until someone is casting a spell with at least two mana up, you can turn this would-be counter into a little tax on them and a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lander" href="#" target="_blank">Lander</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> token for you. Let’s hope you can dodge their aggression after that play so disaster doesn’t come your way…</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Beamsaw Prospector"></div></div></h3>
<p>Black decks love to sacrifice their creatures for value, so why not get some possible ramp out of the deal with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Beamsaw Prospector" href="#" target="_blank">Beamsaw Prospector</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>? Two mana for an expendable body is a reasonable price and could get you that token very early in the game.</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Lithobraking"></div></div></h3>
<p>While this next card won’t be for every deck, an artifact-focused commander might love <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lithobraking" href="#" target="_blank">Lithobraking</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Clearing the board of smaller creatures while making you that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lander" href="#" target="_blank">Lander</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> at instant speed isn’t too bad. Just make sure you have another trinket laying around to sacrifice, so you don’t lose out on the ramp this card brings.</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Dauntless Scrapbot"></div></div></h3>
<p>Everyone has heard this advice by now, but running graveyard hate is something more people should do. It just isn’t the most fun effect to add to a deck. Well, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dauntless Scrapbot" href="#" target="_blank">Dauntless Scrapbot</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> could push more of us to add this type of removal to our 99s, since it also brings that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lander" href="#" target="_blank">Lander</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> token along with it.</p>
<h3><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Sami&#039;s Curiosity"></div></div></h3>
<p>Now, I didn’t add any other green cards to this section, since it’s already the color of land ramp. However, I did want to throw <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sami&#039;s Curiosity" href="#" target="_blank">Sami&#039;s Curiosity</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> on the list since it only costs you one mana, gains you two life, and makes you a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lander" href="#" target="_blank">Lander</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>A lot of players have already made the comparison between these new tokens and the card <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wayfarer&#039;s Bauble" href="#" target="_blank">Wayfarer&#039;s Bauble</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. So, for the handful of green decks that still run that artifact in their lists, you now have another option to include that also gains you some life in the process.</p>

Stellar Commons &#038; Uncommons from Edge of Eternities

<p><a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/eoe"><em>Edge of Eternities</em></a> is approaching fast, moving towards us at lightspeed. Before we get these new packs in our hands, it's important to know what cards we can expect in them. While the rares and mythics are taking up the spotlight, I'm here to put the commons and uncommons center stage.</p>
<p>My name is <a href="https://linktr.ee/thetylerbucks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tyler 'Savesya' Bucks</a>, and it's my job to dig through the bulk of each new set so you don't have to. On today's edition of <em>Bulk Up </em>we have a lot to get into, because there's a potential new staple hitting the format with each reveal.</p>
<p>So, join me as we blast off to the stars and explore <em>Magic</em>'s foray into the far reaches of space.</p>
<h3>Emergency Eject</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Emergency Eject"></div></div>
<p>Our first card on the list today has “potential staple” written all over it. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Emergency Eject" href="#" target="_blank">Emergency Eject</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is similar to the Commander format staple <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Generous Gift" href="#" target="_blank">Generous Gift</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but instead of giving a 3/3 creature token, the player gets a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lander" href="#" target="_blank">Lander</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> token.</p>
<p>Recently, I’ve been straying away from removal spells that create a creature for an opponent, since most of my white decks want to have a clear board when I move to attacks. So, when you’re opening packs of this new set, keep an eye out for this one, because it might be able to <em>land</em> in more of your decks than you think.</p>
<p>Now, as for my deck suggestion for this card, it's a little bit of a self-indulgent one. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jasmine Boreal of the Seven" href="#" target="_blank">Jasmine Boreal of the Seven</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a commander that I have in my own collection and will greatly appreciate a new removal piece that doesn't put a potential blocker on your opponent's board.</p>
<h3>Seedship Impact</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Seedship Impact"></div></div>
<p>Staying on the removal train, our next card is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seedship Impact" href="#" target="_blank">Seedship Impact</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. An upgraded <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Naturalize" href="#" target="_blank">Naturalize</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that makes you a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lander" href="#" target="_blank">Lander</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> if you destroy something with mana value two or less.</p>
<p>While there have been plenty of effects like this in the past, if you have a deck that is completely built around getting lands into play, this can save you in a few situations. Blowing up a small value piece from one of your foes to set you up for some <em>landfall</em> triggers is a play pattern a lot of green decks are looking for.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kibo, Uktabi Prince" href="#" target="_blank">Kibo, Uktabi Prince</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> loves seeing artifacts bite the dust. So, having a cheap instant spell that can remove someone's value piece while buffing your whole board would surely catch your foes off guard. Plus, since Kibo is cheap to cast, having that Lander token around as a way to ramp you towards the late game shouldn't be overlooked.</p>
<h3>Annul</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Annul"></div></div>
<p>Counterspells are the bane of some players' existence, and when it comes time for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Annul" href="#" target="_blank">Annul</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to get into blue mage’s hands, that animosity might get worse. Sure, only countering artifacts or enchantments can be limited in scope, but as we've already talked about today, those card types are some of the strongest in the game.</p>
<p>If you’ve ever played against an <em><a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/enchantress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Enchantress</a></em> deck, you’ll know that slowing them down is a tall order. Having an answer like this as early as turn one might just keep them on their toes for the rest of the game.</p>
<p>If <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Alela, Cunning Conqueror" href="#" target="_blank">Alela, Cunning Conqueror</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is leading one of your decks, consider adding Annul to your 99. Black and blue have a hard time permanently dealing with artifacts and enchantments, so giving this deck a removal option that would also trigger your commander makes for some tight synergy.</p>
<h3>Ruinous Rampage</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Ruinous Rampage"></div></div>
<p>Apparently it’s a bad day to be an artifact, because <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ruinous Rampage" href="#" target="_blank">Ruinous Rampage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is also here to clear the board of those pesky metal trinkets. If you have a deck that runs little to no artifacts, that exile effect will leave you free and clear, while crippling the rest of the table.</p>
<p>Also, let’s not overlook that damage you can inflict on each opponent, because in the right deck, that could be exactly what you need. Three mana for nine damage isn’t anything to sneeze at.</p>
<p>Let's highlight the power of that burn effect by throwing this card into a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Niv-Mizzet, Visionary" href="#" target="_blank">Niv-Mizzet, Visionary</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> deck. Once your commander's out, you're looking for any way possible to deal direct damage to your opponents; and the fact this this card comes with an extra effect is just icing on the big, red, destructive cake.</p>
<h3>Decode Transmissions</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Decode Transmissions"></div></div>
<p>Speaking of lowering your opponent’s life totals, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Decode Transmissions" href="#" target="_blank">Decode Transmissions</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that puts a new spin on the typical draw-two-lose-two style of card.</p>
<p><em>Void</em> is an ability from the set that unlocks new layers for some cards, and all you need to do is have a nonland permanent leave your board (or warp a card, which we'll cover later in the list). If you meet that requirement, then each other player loses two life instead.</p>
<p>Three mana for a sorcery that fills up your hand while lowering your opponents' life totals is powerful, especially when you know you can hit that <em>void</em> mode reliably.</p>
<p>One of the most popular commanders on all of EDHREC is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Teysa Karlov" href="#" target="_blank">Teysa Karlov</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, the aristocrat queen. Sure, the <em>void</em> effect wouldn't trigger twice when it comes to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Decode Transmissions" href="#" target="_blank">Decode Transmissions</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but a deck like this will ensure you always have something leaving your board.</p>
<h3>All-Fates Scroll</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="All-Fates Scroll"></div></div>
<p>In recent sets we’ve gotten quite a few interesting mana rocks that cost three mana, and just like those other artifacts, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="All-Fates Scroll" href="#" target="_blank">All-Fates Scroll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is something to consider for your decks. It fixes your mana and ramps you in the early game, but that’s not why I want to talk about it today.</p>
<p>For seven mana, you can sacrifice this artifact and draw cards equal to the number of differently named lands you control. In most decks that have three or more colors, this is a great way to refill your hand, since adding up your basics and non-basics with different names in the late game could draw you a big stack of cards.</p>
<p>Hailing from the <em><a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/fin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Final Fantasy</a></em> set, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Wandering Minstrel" href="#" target="_blank">The Wandering Minstrel</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. This deck's whole goal is to get as many Towns on the battlefield as possible, which will naturally add to the number of differently names lands you control. Plus, since it's a five-color deck, you might find yourself in a spot where a little mana fixing is a welcomed inclusion.</p>
<h3>Seedship Broodtender</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Seedship Broodtender"></div></div>
<p><a href="https://edhrec.com/commanders/golgari" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Golgari</a> (<span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-b" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>) decks tend to love one thing more than anything else: filling up their graveyards. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seedship Broodtender" href="#" target="_blank">Seedship Broodtender</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> enters the battlefield and assists you on that journey by milling three cards as early as turn two. Then, in the late game, you can spend five mana to sacrifice this new card and return a creature or Spacecraft to the battlefield from your graveyard.</p>
<p>This is a great curve for a self-mill deck, since by the time you're ready to activate that ability, you should have plenty of nasty threats to recur from your bin!</p>
<p>A deck that would love to have this new Insect join its ranks, is one built around <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Meren of Clan Nel Toth" href="#" target="_blank">Meren of Clan Nel Toth</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Picture this: turn two you cast <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seedship Broodtender" href="#" target="_blank">Seedship Broodtender</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, filling up your yard. Then when Meren comes down, you have plenty of good targets for her recursion ability. Finally, sacrifice the Broodtender to reanimate another big threat, and get it right back with Meren's end step trigger, and repeat the process.</p>
<h3>Scout for Survivors</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Scout for Survivors"></div></div>
<p>If getting back things from your graveyard is what you're looking for, well the new white uncommon <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scout for Survivors" href="#" target="_blank">Scout for Survivors</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is here to help.</p>
<p>With the rise of more and more commanders that care about small value creatures entering the format, a card like this can become incredibly valuable in those decks. If you have a particularly low to the ground aggressive strategy, you could reliably get back two or more creatures with Scout for Survivors.</p>
<p>But don't overlook that this card adds +1/+1 counters to the mix.</p>
<p>Let's head back to <em>Final Fantasy</em> with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aerith Gainsborough" href="#" target="_blank">Aerith Gainsborough</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which, when paired with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scout for Survivors" href="#" target="_blank">Scout for Survivors</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, you can make things can get a little tricky. Since Aerith's mana value is three, and she has a great <em>dies</em> trigger, you could bring her right back to the battlefield with another +1/+1 counter to keep that game plan rolling!</p>
<p>If only it were that easy to get her back in the video game...</p>
<h3>Umbral Collar Zealot</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Umbral Collar Zealot"></div></div>
<p>Free sacrifice outlets have always been powerful in Commander, which is why <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Umbral Collar Zealot" href="#" target="_blank">Umbral Collar Zealot</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is likely to find a home in many players' decks. Sure, it's similar to the format staple <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Viscera Seer" href="#" target="_blank">Viscera Seer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, however it has a few important twists.</p>
<p>With this new card you can sacrifice a creature or an artifact to surveil 1, opening it up to so many different strategies. Any commander that incidentally makes tokens (be they creatures or artifacts) or even a graveyard centric deck that wants to put its value pieces in the bin, will be happy to include this card in the 99.</p>
<p>So nice, I had to feature the character twice - <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Teysa, Opulent Oligarch" href="#" target="_blank">Teysa, Opulent Oligarch</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> would absolutely love this card. This commander makes you two different types of tokens, and if you find yourself with far too many Clues to handle, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Umbral Collar Zealot" href="#" target="_blank">Umbral Collar Zealot</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can sacrifice one of them on every turn to make you an extra Spirit token.</p>
<h3>Weftstalker Ardent</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Weftstalker Ardent"></div></div>
<p>Closing things out today, we have a member of a new creature type called the Drix, who have a proclivity for bending space and time.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Weftstalker Ardent" href="#" target="_blank">Weftstalker Ardent</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> does this by helping you double the speed of your game in the right deck. Dealing a damage to each opponent whenever a creature or artifact hits your board is incredibly powerful. When paired with the right commander, you could close out a game quickly by having this on your board, or even spending one mana to warp it on the turn you’re ready to pop off!</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arabella, Abandoned Doll" href="#" target="_blank">Arabella, Abandoned Doll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> loves turning creature tokens into damage, which is exactly what the Weftstalker can assist with. Imagine creating a whole legion of Rats with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Song of Totentanz" href="#" target="_blank">Song of Totentanz</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, dealing a bunch of damage to your opponents when those tokens enter. Finally, you can just move to combat, and deal even more pain off of your commander's trigger... That's just scary value.</p>
<h2>The Wrap Up!</h2>

Great Cards Hidden in Edge of Eternities' Bulk

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Well, <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/fin" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Final Fantasy</em></a> is here and just as predicted, it's an incredibly popular set. Sure, cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vivi Ornitier" href="#" target="_blank">Vivi Ornitier</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER" href="#" target="_blank">Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Traveling Chocobo" href="#" target="_blank">Traveling Chocobo</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are dominating the spotlight, but let’s take a look at some of the gems from the set that may be hidden in your bulk. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My name is Tyler ‘Savesya’ Bucks, and it’s my duty to look through your stacks of commons &amp; uncommons so you don’t have to. On today’s Bulk Up, I present to you some amazing cards you might have overlooked, just waiting to be added to your decks.</span></p>
<h3>Blitzball</h3>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Let’s kick things off this week with everyone’s favorite game: Is this three mana rock good enough in Commander? <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blitzball" href="#" target="_blank">Blitzball</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> taps for a mana of any color, but it can also tap and sacrifice itself to draw two cards if a legendary creature has dealt combat damage to an opponent that turn. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This card is great in aggressive strategies, especially when you have an expensive commander who loves to get into combat, since those kinds of decks usually need help with refilling their hand.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In terms of a deck suggestion for this card, let’s pair it up with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Slicer, Hired Muscle" href="#" target="_blank">Slicer, Hired Muscle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Decks built around this commander are centered around powering out Slicer, and then passing it around. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you notice, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blitzball" href="#" target="_blank">Blitzball</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can be sacrificed to draw those cards whenever an opponent is dealt damage by any legendary creature, you don’t have to be the one to control it. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So, be sneaky and hold this up until it’s just right for you to draw those cards when no one is expecting it. </span></p>
<h3>Restoration Magic</h3>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Every deck needs to protect its key pieces, especially since more and more removal gets added to the format each year. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Restoration Magic" href="#" target="_blank">Restoration Magic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> being a tiered spell that can save a valuable permanent makes it incredibly useful at any point in the game. Since some matchups can be a war of attrition, the option to save your whole board while also gaining six life can be just the thing to put you out of kill-range!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Amalia Benavides Aguirre" href="#" target="_blank">Amalia Benavides Aguirre</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a life gain commander that, when left unchecked, can turn into a board wipe. So, she often becomes a lightning rod for removal, which is where <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Restoration Magic" href="#" target="_blank">Restoration Magic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can come to the rescue. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, you can get extra tricky with these two cards, and here’s how: When Amalia is one counter away from sweeping the table, cast <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Restoration Magic" href="#" target="_blank">Restoration Magic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for its five mana level, giving your board indestructible and gaining you life. If Amalia gets that final counter, then she'll destroy every creature except for yours.</span></p>
<h3>Sazh's Chocobo</h3>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">+1/+1 counter decks are incredibly popular in Commander, totaling over one hundred and sixty thousand decks <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/plus-1-plus-1-counters" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here on EDHREC</a>. Which is why you could hear a collective cheer during preview season when <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sazh&#039;s Chocobo" href="#" target="_blank">Sazh&#039;s Chocobo</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was revealed. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A one-mana creature that gets a counter every time a land enters your board may not seem flashy, but when your deck just wants to build up counters as quickly as possible, starting that engine on turn one is exactly what you’re looking for. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A mono-colored legend that loves modified creatures is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kodama of the West Tree" href="#" target="_blank">Kodama of the West Tree</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. The one thing that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sazh&#039;s Chocobo" href="#" target="_blank">Sazh&#039;s Chocobo</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is missing is some way to punch that damage through, which is where Kodama comes in. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Giving your little chick trample, then ramping lands when it hits is exactly the type of synergy we love to see. So, if you already have a Kodama deck, be sure to go looking for this li'l friend in your boosters.</span></p>
<h3>Al Bhed Salvagers</h3>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our next card not only fits in with <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/aristocrats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aristocrat decks</a>, but it also makes Clues, Food, Treasures and more even better; it’s <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Al Bhed Salvagers" href="#" target="_blank">Al Bhed Salvagers</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We've seen several different variations of this type of card over the years, but the new spin this time around is that it triggers on both creatures and artifacts, making it perfect to pair up with anything that wants to sacrifice itself for your cause.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A commander that consistently makes artifacts that will feed the Salvagers is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff" href="#" target="_blank">Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. He makes you a Treasure whenever a player casts their second spell, which is a great ability, however it does cost you one life in the process. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This is what makes <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Al Bhed Salvagers" href="#" target="_blank">Al Bhed Salvagers</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> such a great fit in the deck, since you can then use that token for mana, gain your life back, and drain someone else.</span></p>
<h3>Opera Love Song</h3>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Red’s card advantage has come a long way, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Opera Love Song" href="#" target="_blank">Opera Love Song</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is just more proof of that. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sure, it could pump up a couple of your creatures for a turn, but more importantly, it gives you access to the top two cards of your library at instant speed. The rate of this is just amazing, especially since you can hold up that mana as your opponents take their turns, then surprise them with this spell right before your turn.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you picked up the <em><a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/exit-from-exile-precon-primer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Exit From Exile</a></em> precon back in the day, then your commander <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Faldorn, Dread Wolf Herald" href="#" target="_blank">Faldorn, Dread Wolf Herald</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is just champing at the bit for this new spell. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Of course, casting spells from exile is something that keeps your engine running, but that power buff is something that could come up when the time is right. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With all those Wolf tokens you have sitting around, you can turn a chump block into a gotcha-style combat trick! </span></p>
<h3>Stolen Uniform</h3>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At first glance, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stolen Uniform" href="#" target="_blank">Stolen Uniform</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> might seem like a pretty narrow Equipment-matters card. While it does rely on an Equipment being on the field, it has a few tricks up its stolen sleeves. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">First off, you can steal an opponent’s pivotal protection piece, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lightning Greaves" href="#" target="_blank">Lightning Greaves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, allowing you to finally target the creature with removal. On top of that, it can also just allow you to attach an Equipment on your side of the field for only one mana, getting around expensive equip costs (I’m looking at you, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Colossus Hammer" href="#" target="_blank">Colossus Hammer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>…)</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A commander that can add even more tricks to the mix is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arna Kennerüd, Skycaptain" href="#" target="_blank">Arna Kennerüd, Skycaptain</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you steal an Equipment from one of your opponents, all you need to do is attack with the creature you attached it to, which will then trigger Arna. That'll create a copy of the Equipment you stole, which you get to keep even after you give back what you borrowed. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not bad for only one mana! </span></p>
<h2>Great Uncommon Legends</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Next up, let’s take a look at a few uncommon legendary creatures that could make for great commanders themselves, but can do some major work in the 99 of another deck.</span></p>
<h3>Black Waltz No. 3</h3>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Guttersnipe" href="#" target="_blank">Guttersnipe</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a certified staple in the Commander format, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Black Waltz No. 3" href="#" target="_blank">Black Waltz No. 3</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> fits a similar role. Dealing two damage to each opponent whenever you cast a noncreature spell is amazing, and can fit in a few places <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Guttersnipe" href="#" target="_blank">Guttersnipe</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> doesn’t. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Decks centered around artifacts, enchantments, or even planeswalkers can tend to spin their wheels, but that’s where this Black Mage can help. Plus, don’t discount this in Standard spellslinger decks, since it can weaponize your value plays.</span></p>
<h3>Ignis Scientia</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Ignis Scientia"></div></div>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For people who have followed my <em>Bulk Up</em> series for a while, you’ll know I love the type of ramp found on <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ignis Scientia" href="#" target="_blank">Ignis Scientia</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Instead of picking up your deck, searching for a land, then shuffling; you just look at the top six cards of your library and pick the best land. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This helps speed up the game, as well as gives you the ability to hit nonbasics. Sure, it makes fixing your mana a little harder, but the ease of use is worth the risk. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Keep an eye out for this guy and his delicious treats while you’re opening packs from this set!</span></p>
<h3>The Emperor of Palamecia</h3>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Speaking of ramp, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Emperor of Palamecia" href="#" target="_blank">The Emperor of Palamecia</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is here to help you cast your noncreature spells, coming down as early as turn two. Even though that mana does come with a restriction, when paired with the right deck, The Emperor can end up feeling like any other mana source. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On top of all of that, it can grow with counters as the game goes on, and transform into a nasty repeatable burn outlet on its flip side. Which makes it great not only in the setup phases of your game, but also when you need to close things out in a match. </span></p>
<h3>Cid, Timeless Artificer</h3>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Closing things out this week with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cid, Timeless Artificer" href="#" target="_blank">Cid, Timeless Artificer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which comes with everyone's favorite text “A deck can have any number of cards named <a href="https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&amp;order=released&amp;q=%21%22Cid%2C+Timeless+Artificer%22+include%3Aextras&amp;unique=prints" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cid, Timeless Artificer</a>.” Since it has that clause, this is an uncommon that will most likely fetch a higher price for a long time. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />

</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">It also has the benefit of being a card with alternate art for each version of Cid in the games, adding more value to whichever variant of the card you get. Plus, it’s just a cool design, helping both Heroes and artifact creatures you control. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With this set, and all the <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/spe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marvel cards to come</a>, supporting Heroes will become more valuable as time goes on. </span></p>

Don't Let These Final Fantasy Bulk Cards Collect Dust

<p>Believe it or not, the <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/fin" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Final Fantasy</em></a> set is almost here. Whether you’re going to a pre-release, a draft, buying packs, or just picking up singles, you’ll be getting tons of playable cards for Commander. Spoiler season has been headlined by some flashy rares and mythics, but today we'll be taking a look at a few great commons and uncommons that might've slipped under your radar.</p>
<p>My name is Tyler ‘Savesya’ Bucks, and on this edition of <em>Bulk Up</em> we're shining a spotlight on those cards people tend to skip over when opening a booster. With this list, I'll be highlighting new singles that can fit in a broader range of decks, or pair well with popular strategies. So, let’s not waste any more time and jump right into things!</p>
<h2>The Best Commons and Uncommons in <em>Final Fantasy</em></h2>
<h3>PuPu UFO</h3>

<p>Kicking things off this week with not only one of the best bulk cards of the set, but also one of the worst named cards of all time. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="PuPu UFO" href="#" target="_blank">PuPu UFO</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a great blocker that offers up some amazing ramp capabilities in the right build. If your deck is drawing one to two additional cards each turn rotation, there's a good chance you’ll be able to throw a land down with the UFO while still hitting your land drop for the turn.</p>
<p>As for a deck I'd suggest you add this little Alien to, let’s pair it up with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Niv-Mizzet, Parun" href="#" target="_blank">Niv-Mizzet, Parun</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Those decks are already filled with ways to draw cards, which means that from the start of the game you could be throwing down an additional land each turn rotation. Having the right lands to cast your commander is paramount in this deck, so that means you’ll be dropping that egotistical Dragon earlier than anyone is ready for.</p>
<h3>Summon: Fenrir</h3>

<p>Speaking of land ramp, the first Summon card we'll look at today can help with that. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Summon: Fenrir" href="#" target="_blank">Summon: Fenrir</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a Saga creature that fetches a basic land on its first chapter, gives a counter to a creature you cast on the second chapter, then draws you a card if you have the biggest creature on the board before sacrificing itself. If you're running a deck that's centered around creatures primarily, this might be more helpful than a normal <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cultivate" href="#" target="_blank">Cultivate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in that deck.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tayam, Luminous Enigma" href="#" target="_blank">Tayam, Luminous Enigma</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> works perfectly with these new Saga creatures. Feeding into those counter synergies as well as the fact that you can bring them back to your board if they do end up in your graveyard. I recently did an <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/build-a-tayam-luminous-enigma-deck-with-your-dragonstorm-bulk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article about a Tayam deck</a> made primarily out of bulk from <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/tdm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Tarkir: Dragonstorm</em></a>, and I definitely think you could start throwing some of these Summons in that list to power it up!</p>
<h3 class="m-2">Relm's Sketching</h3>

<p>You know what they say: if you can’t ramp lands, copy them. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Relm&#039;s Sketching" href="#" target="_blank">Relm&#039;s Sketching</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a sorcery that lets you copy the best land, artifact, or even creature on the board. Four mana is a little steep for getting a copy of something, but since you can grab three different permanent types, that kind of makes up for it if you ask me. Plus, as the years go on, we've been getting more and more ways to go off with tokens. So, as we get more sets, this spell will only continue to grow in value.</p>
<p>A really interesting commander from last year that would work great with this new spell is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Eluge, the Shoreless Sea" href="#" target="_blank">Eluge, the Shoreless Sea</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Not only does it care about lands, but it can also reduce the blue mana in the casting cost of instant and sorcery spells you cast. If you can copy the best creature, artifact, or land with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Relm&#039;s Sketching" href="#" target="_blank">Relm&#039;s Sketching</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for only two mana, you're definitely in a good position to take that game!</p>
<h3>Sidequest: Catch A Fish</h3>

<p>Next up, let’s turn an enchantment into a land with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sidequest: Catch a Fish" href="#" target="_blank">Sidequest: Catch a Fish</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. On the front side, this can help you draw a card, make you a Food token, and then flip over into a land. That's already really great, but that activated ability of the land shouldn’t be overlooked. Sacrificing an artifact, like the Food you just made, to put a +1/+1 counter on all your creatures is a really good effect to keep in your back pocket.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Alela, Artful Provocateur" href="#" target="_blank">Alela, Artful Provocateur</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a commander that cares both about enchantments as well as artifacts, making it perfect for this Sidequest. Creating a Faerie when you cast the enchantment side, and then again when you cast the artifact you draw off the top is very nice. Once it’s flipped over to that land side, you can wait for the right moment to throw a counter on your board of flyers to help them pack even more of a punch.</p>
<h3>Summon: G.F. Ifrit</h3>

<p>Our next entry on this list offers both card rummaging and a little bit of ramp. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Summon: G.F. Ifrit" href="#" target="_blank">Summon: G.F. Ifrit</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is another Saga creature that gives you the ability to discard a card to draw a card for its first two chapters, and then its final two gives you a red mana on your first main phase. A card like this can help you sculpt a better hand for your late game and then gives you some additional mana to enact those plans.</p>
<p>Let's go back to a classic mono-red commander with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Feldon of the Third Path" href="#" target="_blank">Feldon of the Third Path</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. He cares about filling up the graveyard with threats to replace his wife with, so the Summon’s ability to throw cards in the bin that you can make tokens of later is a great pairing. Then it will give you some extra mana that you can use to activate that ability, helping smooth out your later turns.</p>
<h3>Overkill</h3>

<p>This next card might be in the running for the most aptly named spell of all time: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Overkill" href="#" target="_blank">Overkill</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. If you or someone you know is still a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Murder" href="#" target="_blank">Murder</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> believer (and I know you’re out there) this is just another nail in your favorite kill spell’s coffin. Giving a creature -0/-9999 at instant speed is just a wild ability and can help get you out of some extra tricky situations. Indestructible creatures won’t stand a chance against <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Overkill" href="#" target="_blank">Overkill</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which is especially brutal if someone was holding up a protection spell like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Boros Charm" href="#" target="_blank">Boros Charm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to protect a key piece.</p>
<p>If you’re looking to make your opponents' creatures die with zero toughness, then <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Massacre Girl, Known Killer" href="#" target="_blank">Massacre Girl, Known Killer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the commander for you! Her decks are usually filled with all kinds of ways to lower the board's stats, drawing you a whole bunch of cards all at once. Which is great value, but sometimes you just need to clear one thing off the board. So, three mana to remove a threat, and then draw a card isn’t too bad of a combo.</p>
<h3>Phoenix Down</h3>

<p>One of the most important items in the <em>Final Fantasy</em> franchise is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phoenix Down" href="#" target="_blank">Phoenix Down</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and its ability was perfectly captured with this card. Sure, the ability to snipe a few specific creature types might come up in a game once in a while. However, the main star of the show is that recursion ability. The fact that this can sit on the battlefield gives you the opportunity to activate it when the time is right. Pair this with a commander that loves to fill your graveyard, and your deck just got all the more resilient.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Queen Kayla bin-Kroog" href="#" target="_blank">Queen Kayla bin-Kroog</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a commander I’ve considered building around for a while, because it just plays so well with cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phoenix Down" href="#" target="_blank">Phoenix Down</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Since Queen Kayla has you discard your hand, and lets you return some of the cards you threw away to the battlefield, you can choose this new artifact to be one of them. Once it’s on your board, you can then use it to bring back something else you discarded, which helps give you even more access to the cards in your bin.</p>
<h3>Self-Destruct</h3>

<p>We have a new addition in the long line of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fling" href="#" target="_blank">Fling</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>-style spells with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Self-Destruct" href="#" target="_blank">Self-Destruct</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Two mana for an instant-speed way for one of your creatures to deal a killing blow to a troublesome creature or even an opponent is a great rate. The fact that it deals that damage to itself as well is where things can get tricky. Of course, if your creature’s power is lower than its toughness that's great, but if the creature you choose is indestructible you don’t have to deal with that downside.</p>
<p>I recently did an <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/building-kuja-genome-sorcerer-on-a-budget-fourteen-cards-under-14" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article covering the new card</a> for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kuja, Genome Sorcerer" href="#" target="_blank">Kuja, Genome Sorcerer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which was based around Wizards and burn. If you're planning to build that deck, I think you should consider throwing <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Self-Destruct" href="#" target="_blank">Self-Destruct</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in there. Once Kuja doubles the damage your Wizards do, this new instant could be a way to just take a player out at any point. Sure, you might lose one of your creatures in the process, but that’s a risk Kuja is willing to take.</p>
<h3>Quina, Qu Gourmet</h3>

<p>Token strategies are incredibly popular, especially in green, which is what makes <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Quina, Qu Gourmet" href="#" target="_blank">Quina, Qu Gourmet</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> such a great Legend in the uncommon slot. Whenever you make any type of token, you will also make a 1/1 Frog. That means you can be adding more bodies to a board with other creature tokens or give a bit more punching power to a deck that only makes noncreature tokens, like Treasures, Clues, or Food.</p>
<p>Let’s make our own little <em><a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/blb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bloomburrow</a></em> party with Quina and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chatterfang, Squirrel General" href="#" target="_blank">Chatterfang, Squirrel General</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. With just those two out, anytime you make a token you’ll also make a Frog and a Squirrel. That turns a popular card like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tireless Provisioner" href="#" target="_blank">Tireless Provisioner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> into an outlet for getting three tokens anytime a land enters your board. Just think about that interaction for every other token engine in your deck… Now that's what I call value right there!</p>
