The Dragons Approach, With Garland, Knight of Cornelia

<p>The long-awaited <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/fin"><em>Final Fantasy</em></a> set is on the horizon, and the hype train has already left the station. Even if you aren't the most excited to see cards from this video game series enter <em>Magic</em>, you do have to admit that some of these new designs are incredible. One of the legendary creatures that has taken the internet by storm already is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kuja, Genome Sorcerer" href="#" target="_blank">Kuja, Genome Sorcerer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>When I was young, my brothers played through <em>Final Fantasy IX</em> and I'll be honest with everyone here: Kuja was terrifying to me... So, it seems only fitting that I would overcome my fear for this villain and bring you fourteen cards for under $14 to help you get started on brewing around this commander on a budget. Strap in, throw <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4AQ7kRcn_A" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kuja's awesome theme</a> on, and get ready to bring the house down with your accursed flames!</p>
<h2>What Does Kuja, Genome Sorcerer Do?</h2>

<p>Coming in straight from my childhood nightmares to terrorize your playgroup, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kuja, Genome Sorcerer" href="#" target="_blank">Kuja, Genome Sorcerer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. On its front side, you'll be making an 0/1 Wizard on your endstep that pings your opponents when you cast noncreature spells. Then, after you control four or more Wizards, Kuja will flip to his other side, Trance Kuja, Fate Defied, which then doubles the damage any of your Wizards deal from there on out.</p>
<p>Since this commander costs four mana, there's a good chance you'll have a Wizard or two out already by the time you cast him. That means you'll be flipping over to the damage doubling side sooner than most people think. So, with this list I'll be highlighting some great Wizards that pair nicely with that second side of Kuja, as well as some big noncreature spells that can help set you far ahead the rest of the table, especially when paired with those little Wizard tokens.</p>
<p>Let's take a look at the list now.</p>
<h3>Coruscation Mage</h3>

<p>Our first card this week is a perfect Wizard for this list. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Coruscation Mage" href="#" target="_blank">Coruscation Mage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> deals a damage to each opponent when you cast a noncreature spell, which is the main goal of this deck already. It also can come with an offspring token, to add even more fuel to its fire. Once your Kuja flips, you could possibly be dealing four damage to your foes over and over again. Pair this Otter with your small Wizard tokens, and it's time to really deal some pain.</p>
<h3>Gleeful Arsonist</h3>

<p>This next card fills a similar role to our last entry, and it comes with an added layer of protection. If <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gleeful Arsonist" href="#" target="_blank">Gleeful Arsonist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> happens to get killed as your game goes on, that undying effect is here to bring it right back with a +1/+1 counter on it. Since the Arsonist deals damage to your opponents equal to its power, you'll almost prefer it to get destroyed just so it can come back better than ever! Plus, this card looks like it fits right in with Kuja and his antics...</p>
<h3>Irencrag Pyromancer</h3>

<p>Decks built around this new commander will most likely be filled with cantrips (spells that have an effect and also draws you a card), to help trigger your Wizard's pinging abilities as often as you can. If your build of the deck goes in that direction, then <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Irencrag Pyromancer" href="#" target="_blank">Irencrag Pyromancer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is perfect for you. Of course, the ability to double its damage could just end games for you, but even dealing three damage as its base level can clear up your opponents' threats. Dropping this on turn three could just halt a lot of other players' game plans if they're concerned you could just wipe their value pieces off the board.</p>
<h3>Blood Cultist</h3>

<p>Another great way to keep the board clear of small threats is with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blood Cultist" href="#" target="_blank">Blood Cultist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Tapping to deal one damage isn't too bad, especially when you can ping things down to grow your creature. However, once Kuja has flipped over to his other side, you can then deal two damage to enemy creatures or just swing in with a big beefy Cultist. One way or another, adding this card to your deck will be a thorn in everyone else's sides.</p>
<h3>Basalt Ravager</h3>

<p>Next up is a card you might want to hold on to until your board is just right. Sure, you can slam <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Basalt Ravager" href="#" target="_blank">Basalt Ravager</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> down before you have double damage and it would probably make a big impact. However, if you wait until the right time and Kuja has been flipped over, you could possibly just take a player out of the game. On top of that burn damage the Ravager offers, it can also swing in to deal eight damage if you put it in the red zone.</p>
<h3>Anathemancer</h3>

<p>Speaking of game enders, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Anathemancer" href="#" target="_blank">Anathemancer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can truly take some of the more lavish players at your table out of the game. When it enters, it hits one of your opponents with a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Price of Progress" href="#" target="_blank">Price of Progress</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>-esque effect, which, when paired with a damage doubler, could be backbreaking. This type of spell is great for picking off a player who might be more ahead than the rest of the table, after they fill their board with stacks of specialty lands. Also, even though <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Anathemancer" href="#" target="_blank">Anathemancer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s unearth is expensive, you could take someone by surprise late in the game to close things out.</p>
<h3>Harmonic Prodigy</h3>

<p>Alright, since we're midway through the list, it's time to double everything our Wizards are doing with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Harmonic Prodigy" href="#" target="_blank">Harmonic Prodigy</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>! So far, every creature we've talked about has had a triggered ability, which means that when the Prodigy is out, your game plan is going to go up a level. With <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kuja, Genome Sorcerer" href="#" target="_blank">Kuja, Genome Sorcerer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> flipped, doubling your Wizard's damage, that 0/1 token is dealing four damage whenever you cast a noncreature spell. Which is already crazy, but then you drop something like that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Anathemancer" href="#" target="_blank">Anathemancer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> we just talked about... That could be game over.</p>
<h3>Harnesser of Storms</h3>

<p>This deck is already looking to cast as many noncreature spells as possible, so adding a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Harnesser of Storms" href="#" target="_blank">Harnesser of Storms</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to the list will ensure you're constantly churning through your library. This deck will most likely be an <em>all-in</em> type of strategy, so having an effect to dig deeper into your library while you're progressing through a risky turn will be a big help. Even if this creature only assists you with hitting your land drops each turn, you'll be happy to have it on your team.</p>
<h3>Party Thrasher</h3>

<p>If you happen to have a lot of those 0/1 tokens sitting around, why not throw a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Party Thrasher" href="#" target="_blank">Party Thrasher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> down and have them help you cast your spells? Giving convoke to all your noncreature spells is a great way to push through that last little bit of damage to the rest of the table, by chaining several powerful spells together on the same turn. Plus, even if you run out of threats to cast, the Thrasher has a way to exile two cards from your library and ensure you can keep this pain train rolling.</p>
<h3>Electrostatic Infantry</h3>

<p>A majority of the noncreature spells you'll be casting in a deck like this will be instants and sorceries, which is exactly what <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Electrostatic Infantry" href="#" target="_blank">Electrostatic Infantry</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> loves to see. Gaining a counter whenever you sling one of those spells is great, especially when you make it to the late game and can double the trampling damage this creature can offer. Given enough time, this could be a way to slam through your opponent's defenses and turn their chump blockers into chump change (I don't even know if that made sense).</p>
<h3>Taurean Mauler</h3>

<p>Listen, I know this bull thing doesn’t look like a Wizard, but technically <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Taurean Mauler" href="#" target="_blank">Taurean Mauler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a part of that team. Throwing this onto the field in the early game and letting it grow to a massive size just means that you can consistently pressure the boards of the other players at the table. On top of that, the next few spells I'll be talking about on this list work perfectly when you have a big creature like the Mauler, which is just champing at the bit for its damage to be doubled!</p>
<h3>Soul's Fire</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Soul&#039;s Fire"></div></div>
<p>Next up, we have a spell that's similar to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fling" href="#" target="_blank">Fling</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but lets you keep your creature around. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Soul&#039;s Fire" href="#" target="_blank">Soul&#039;s Fire</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows one of your Wizards to deal damage equal to its power to any target. When played in conjunction with the flip side of <span class="edhrecp__link only-back"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kuja, Genome Sorcerer" href="#" target="_blank">Kuja, Genome Sorcerer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, you can deal a big chunk of damage to anything! Think of that with either of our last two cards on the list, and that's a way to wipe one of your foes out of the game completely, at instant speed.</p>
<h3>Chandra's Ignition</h3>

<p>One of the most impactful spells on the entire list is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chandra&#039;s Ignition" href="#" target="_blank">Chandra&#039;s Ignition</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Not only is this spell a board wipe, but when paired with a large Wizard, it could take your opponents' life totals down to single digits; all while clearing the way for your last remaining threat to swing through freely and deal another major blow. This card is a staple in our format, so be sure to snatch one up just in case that price starts to climb higher and higher.</p>
<h3>Surge to Victory</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Surge to Victory"></div></div>
<p>We're closing things out this week with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Surge to Victory" href="#" target="_blank">Surge to Victory</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, basically an <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Overrun" href="#" target="_blank">Overrun</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effect in this deck. Giving your board a buff to their power based on the mana value of the spell you exile is great for a big swing, especially since those 0/1 Wizard tokens can finally enter into combat. Then, you get to cast a copy of that spell when your creatures hit a player, which just adds insult to injury! Imagine casting <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Soul&#039;s Fire" href="#" target="_blank">Soul&#039;s Fire</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> over and over again after a big combat? That's brutal.</p>
<h2>In Closing</h2>
<p>Well, there you have it: fourteen cards for under $14 to help get you started on a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kuja, Genome Sorcerer" href="#" target="_blank">Kuja, Genome Sorcerer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> deck. I know the <em>Final Fantasy</em> set is still almost a month away, but grabbing these cards for a low price now will help you in the long run.</p>

Welcome to </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Archetypes of Imagination</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a brand new series where I'll be building decks based on popular Commander archetypes. I'll be using</span><a href="https://tagger.scryfall.com/"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">Scryfall's tagging system</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and</span><a href="https://edhrec.com/tags"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">EDHREC's Tag pages</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to build around a new theme each week. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Scryfall has a really cool way of categorizing cards, where each card has specific labels attached to it for later reference. For example, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cultivate" href="#" target="_blank">Cultivate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has the ramp tag and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Carrion Feeder" href="#" target="_blank">Carrion Feeder</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has the sacrifice outlet tag. EDHREC's tag system is really cool too, letting users see popular cards associated with a given strategy. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For example, the toughness matters tag shows users that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wall of Denial" href="#" target="_blank">Wall of Denial</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> works well with the strategy and the Blink tag does the same for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ephemerate" href="#" target="_blank">Ephemerate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This week, we'll be taking some really, really long turns. We're building a deck based around <strong>cantrips</strong>! For those who don't know, a card is considered a cantrip when it provides its caster with a card draw in addition to some other effects.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> One famous example, which you'll see in this week's full decklist, is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Opt" href="#" target="_blank">Opt</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. There's tons of commanders that work well with cantrips, especially cantrips that happen to be instants or sorceries, and I'm pretty happy with the one I picked. From </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bloomburrow</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, my favorite recent set, this deck's commander is… <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bria, Riptide Rogue" href="#" target="_blank">Bria, Riptide Rogue</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Bria, Riptide Rogue"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bria, Riptide Rogue" href="#" target="_blank">Bria</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> provides all of our creatures prowess, meaning they'll get temporarily bigger when we cast a noncreature spell. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">She also makes one of our creatures unblockable for a turn when we cast a noncreature spell, meaning that they'll be able to chip in for damage with their buffed-up power and toughness. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bria, Riptide Rogue" href="#" target="_blank">Bria</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s abilities encourage a somewhat straight-forward gameplan, there's still a lot of room for creativity in this decklist. Let's get going, and I'll show you what I mean!</span></p>
<h3><b>On the prowl…</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Because <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bria, Riptide Rogue" href="#" target="_blank">Bria</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives all of our creatures prowess, we want to ensure that we've got a relatively wide board to capitalize on that ability. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But, we also need to ensure that we've got enough noncreature spells in the deck to actually trigger that prowess. Some of you may already know where I'm going within this: token creators! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There's a ton of creatures in Izzet colors that make tokens when we cast instants and sorceries, so I've included a whole host of them here.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My favorite is the ever-popular <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shark Typhoon" href="#" target="_blank">Shark Typhoon</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Not only is this a noncreature spell (which will trigger prowess), but it makes big, evasive creature tokens.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> I also think that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Young Pyromancer" href="#" target="_blank">Young Pyromancer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is an all-star here. It only costs two mana, meaning that we can have it hit the board well before our commander, and start churning out tokens as early as turn two. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lastly, I'm a big fan of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Drake Hatcher" href="#" target="_blank">Drake Hatcher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I know this card came out recently, but I don't think it got nearly the amount of popularity it's due.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> This creature has prowess already, and our commander will give it a second instance of prowess, meaning it'll grow by +2/+2 for every noncreature spell we cast. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And, it acts as a sneaky efficient way to make evasive tokens at any time. This is the exact kind of card I want to play in my commander decks, and I think this deck is a perfect home for it.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Shark Typhoon"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Young Pyromancer"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Drake Hatcher"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Drake Hatcher" href="#" target="_blank">Drake Hatcher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, there's a cadre of creatures that already have prowess (or an ability that's very close to it) in the 99 of this deck. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another card I think is underplayed finds a slot here: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Khenra Spellspear" href="#" target="_blank">Khenra Spellspear</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. With our commander out, and this creature transformed, it has three separate instances of prowess. With just one noncreature spell cast, that means we've got a 6/6 trampler with ward <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-2" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The rate only gets better from there. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kiln Fiend" href="#" target="_blank">Kiln Fiend</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crackling Cyclops" href="#" target="_blank">Crackling Cyclops</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Slickshot Show-Off" href="#" target="_blank">Slickshot Show-Off</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are all very similar, growing progressively larger when we cast certain types of spells.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Plus, because our commander can make some of our creatures unblockable, meaning that the less evasive creatures from among this bunch can be sure to punch through for damage. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lastly, I wanted to shout out <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Balmor, Battlemage Captain" href="#" target="_blank">Balmor, Battlemage Captain</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. This is, essentially, a cheaper and slightly-worse version of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bria, Riptide Rogue" href="#" target="_blank">Bria</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">He provides +1/+0 to our whole team when we cast an instant or sorcery (slightly worse than <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bria, Riptide Rogue" href="#" target="_blank">Bria</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s +1/+1), and provides our whole team trample (arguably on par with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bria, Riptide Rogue" href="#" target="_blank">Bria</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s ability to make one creature unblockable at a time).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If our commander ever becomes too expensive to recast, or is otherwise locked out of the game, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Balmor, Battlemage Captain" href="#" target="_blank">Balmor, Battlemage Captain</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a great second option.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Khenra Spellspear"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Kiln Fiend"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Balmor, Battlemage Captain"></div></div></span></p>
<h3><b>Dancing the can-can</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This deck is, at its core, based around cantrips. So, let's talk about a few of the best ones I've included. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crimson Wisps" href="#" target="_blank">Crimson Wisps</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Expedite" href="#" target="_blank">Expedite</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are functionally identical cards, and the ability to provide haste to any one of our creatures (particularly a creature with an instance of double prowess), can be game-ending when combined with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bria, Riptide Rogue" href="#" target="_blank">Bria</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s ability to make one of our creatures unblockable. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If we can land a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kiln Fiend" href="#" target="_blank">Kiln Fiend</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> on the board, make it unblockable, and give it haste, we can easily knock out a player in the late game. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I also wanted to point out the inclusion of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Psychotic Fury" href="#" target="_blank">Psychotic Fury</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which can provide double strike to our commander and a select few other creatures in the deck. When combined with a pump effect like prowess, double strike is obviously immensely powerful in this deck. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There's a bunch of other cantrips too, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Opt" href="#" target="_blank">Opt</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thought Scour" href="#" target="_blank">Thought Scour</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but those cards just aren't as much fun as the others I've mentioned.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Crimson Wisps"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Expedite"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Psychotic Fury"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There's also a small package of cards that care about our graveyard, all of which work quite well together. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dragon&#039;s Rage Channeler" href="#" target="_blank">Dragon&#039;s Rage Channeler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will provide some nice card selection while also becoming a threatening attacker as the game goes on.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Haughty Djinn" href="#" target="_blank">Haughty Djinn</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will reduce the cost of our most important spells, while also becoming huge as the game goes on. And, should we need a boatload of tokens, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rise from the Tides" href="#" target="_blank">Rise from the Tides</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can provide that easily.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Combined with some cantrips to fill the graveyard (like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Consider" href="#" target="_blank">Consider</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, these cards will be super effective here).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Dragon&#039;s Rage Channeler"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Haughty Djinn"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Rise from the Tides"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lastly, I wanted to talk about a few cards in the deck that provide extra combat steps. Every extra combat card in this deck is either an instant or a sorcery, meaning that they all trigger prowess. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Because prowess lasts until the end of the turn, our creatures will keep their pumped-up stats for all the combat steps we go through. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Again, because of the immense power of double strike, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Savage Beating" href="#" target="_blank">Savage Beating</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is one of the top choices here. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For 7 mana, we can push through a crazy amount of damage with a sufficiently wide board of creatures. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="World at War" href="#" target="_blank">World at War</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is great too, providing a cast trigger twice (triggering prowess again)! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And, a new addition, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aetherdrift</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">'s <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Full Throttle" href="#" target="_blank">Full Throttle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can provide two extra combats for the price of one card. That's really strong, and I think this card will become an instant staple in EDH.</span></p>

<p>Welcome to <em>Technically Playable</em>, where our mission statement is "Every commander is <em>Technically</em> playable" (the best kind of playable). The way this works is every article will have a commander generated using EDHREC's random button, I'll talk through the card and then write about how we can build around it!</p>
<p>This week's random commander is <div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Baral, Chief of Compliance"></div></div></p>
<p>Baral is one of the all-time most classic "Fun Police" mono-blue decks with an emphasis on countering spells and drawing cards built into their abilities.</p>
<h2>Slingin' Spells...</h2>
<p>If soldier tokens are white's thing and big monsters are green's then spells are definitely blue's bread and butter. Baral makes an amazing <a href="https://edhrec.com/tags/spellslinger">spellslinger</a> deck by allowing you to make your spells cheaper while turning blue's best "removal" (counterspells) into card selection by allowing you to draw and discard when you counter a spell.</p>
<p>The most common and most popular blue decks tend to focus on countering as many spells as possible and returning any creatures that resolve to their controllers hand to protect themselves until they reach their endgame (where they always have a full hand of cards and can slowly grind out a win).</p>
<p>Personally, I like to attack with creatures so I'm much happier when my spells give me bodies on the board to keep me alive.</p>
<p>For mono-blue alot of these cards create tokens that have flying, giving you some strong evasion and the ability to block your opponent's fliers.</p>
<p>Of these cards, probably the best are <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Talrand, Sky Summoner" href="#" target="_blank">Talrand, Sky Summoner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Docent of Perfection" href="#" target="_blank">Docent of Perfection</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. These cards both create a consistent stream of reasonably statted creatures that either have flying or that can gain it very easily in the case of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Docent of Perfection" href="#" target="_blank">Docent of Perfection</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>But tokens aren't the only way to benefit from the discard and cost reduction that Baral offers. By making spells extremely cheap we can constantly be casting them for some kind of advantage while also fueling our graveyard for creatures like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Haughty Djinn" href="#" target="_blank">Haughty Djinn</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>On top of simply casting spells we can also discard any spells that aren't useful in the moment with Baral's ability as well as cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Frantic Search" href="#" target="_blank">Frantic Search</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Careful Study" href="#" target="_blank">Careful Study</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to make our Djinn's power constantly grow.</p>
<p>The main issue here is the number of cards in <em>mono</em>-blue that have this ability, as most of them are blue and red. There are alternatives though, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Octavia, Living Thesis" href="#" target="_blank">Octavia, Living Thesis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a huge creature with a powerful Ward ability that you can cast extremely cheaply while also making all of our tokens into giant 8/8 monsters too.</p>
<p>This works especially well with the flying tokens from earlier to create a board that can easily knock an opponent out.</p>
<p>But spellslinger decks aren't just about casting a bunch of spells, because there are only so many spells you can actually run in your deck without making yourself really weak to creatures.</p>
<p>Cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kitsa, Otterball Elite" href="#" target="_blank">Kitsa, Otterball Elite</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ojer Pakpatiq, Deepest Epoch" href="#" target="_blank">Ojer Pakpatiq, Deepest Epoch</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> both give our deck easy ways to get multiple used out of each of our spells, either further fueling our graveyard or helping us to find the counterspell or bounce spell we need to stay alive.</p>
<p>We can also use <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thunderclap Drake" href="#" target="_blank">Thunderclap Drake</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Echo Storm" href="#" target="_blank">Echo Storm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are also great in this deck thanks to Baral's low cost. These allow us to copy powerful spells or artifacts to help close out games or to keep us alive.</p>
<p>Using <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Echo Storm" href="#" target="_blank">Echo Storm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> on something like a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gilded Lotus" href="#" target="_blank">Gilded Lotus</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or even a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sol Ring" href="#" target="_blank">Sol Ring</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can often provide enough mana to keep up with the green decks and allow you some breathing room to reach the end game.</p>

<h2>... And Drawin' Cards</h2>
<p>The other side of blue decks is the sheer amount of card draw that they bring to the table. Card draw decks can range hugely in power level with decks like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Niv-Mizzet, Parun" href="#" target="_blank">Niv-Mizzet, Parun</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> even being cEDH viable.</p>
<p>For me, I feel like Baral fits squarely in the middle of that power spectrum not being incredibly powerful but also making very low power level pods suffer in the fun department.</p>
<p>For Baral the focus is on countering spells as that is how he allows you to draw cards. If you use cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dismiss" href="#" target="_blank">Dismiss</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Refute" href="#" target="_blank">Refute</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> you can double up on the card draw for countering spells and with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Archmage Emeritus" href="#" target="_blank">Archmage Emeritus</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Archmage of Runes" href="#" target="_blank">Archmage of Runes</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> you can draw even more for casting spells. With a combination of these you can get a solid two to three cards for every spell that you counter.</p>
<p>You also want some more consistent draw. I'm a big fan of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Howling Mine" href="#" target="_blank">Howling Mine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Font of Mythos" href="#" target="_blank">Font of Mythos</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in control-focused decks as they give you some political leeway to keep yourself alive as it allows other players to benefit.</p>
<p>One of the best options for this is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Well of Ideas" href="#" target="_blank">Well of Ideas</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> because of its asymmetry giving you a small advantage that can very quickly snowball.</p>
<p>If you're looking for something to synergise with Baral's discard you can also use <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Magic Mirror" href="#" target="_blank">The Magic Mirror</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> which scales the earlier you play it giving you card draw that can very easily help you to run away with the game.</p>

<p>In terms of payoffs there are a range of ways to win the game. The obvious ones are of course <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thassa&#039;s Oracle" href="#" target="_blank">Thassa&#039;s Oracle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Laboratory Maniac" href="#" target="_blank">Laboratory Maniac</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jace, Wielder of Mysteries" href="#" target="_blank">Jace, Wielder of Mysteries</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. These give you a way to make sure you can close out the game in an instant where needed.</p>
<p>These work really well with cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Azami, Lady of Scrolls" href="#" target="_blank">Azami, Lady of Scrolls</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> who lets Baral and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Docent of Perfection" href="#" target="_blank">Docent of Perfection</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> draw you even more cards.</p>
<p>Another one-two punch can also be <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Psychosis Crawler" href="#" target="_blank">Psychosis Crawler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. If you're focusing in drawing cards it's quite easy to play <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Psychosis Crawler" href="#" target="_blank">Psychosis Crawler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> into a card like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Windfall" href="#" target="_blank">Windfall</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with a huge hand of cards to drain everyone.</p>
<p>The other "win the game" card that can be quite good in this deck is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Triskaidekaphile" href="#" target="_blank">Triskaidekaphile</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While it does win you the game instantly you need some kind of way to control the number of cards in your hand like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mind Over Matter" href="#" target="_blank">Mind Over Matter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to be able to discard when you have too many cards.</p>
<p>Alternatively you can also go down the token route, like the spellslinger version of the deck. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chasm Skulker" href="#" target="_blank">Chasm Skulker</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a great option if your pod has a number of blue players as the islandwalk can be a game changer against other creature-based blue decks like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Minn, Wily Illusionist" href="#" target="_blank">Minn, Wily Illusionist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>There are also some other cards that can benefit drawing two cards per turn, something easily achievable with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Teferi&#039;s Ageless Insight" href="#" target="_blank">Teferi&#039;s Ageless Insight</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in play.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Homunculus Horde" href="#" target="_blank">Homunculus Horde</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mischievous Mystic" href="#" target="_blank">Mischievous Mystic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> from the newest set are both great examples of this with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Homunculus Horde" href="#" target="_blank">Homunculus Horde</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> doing a very good blue <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scute Swarm" href="#" target="_blank">Scute Swarm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> impression.</p>
<p>At the bottom end of the power level scale for this type of effect is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ominous Seas" href="#" target="_blank">Ominous Seas</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While a bit weaker and needing you to draw eight cards before any payoff it is a very cheap and efficient permanent that you can play early and can start to build up quickly.</p>

<p>In this article I looked at a couple of different ways to play Baral, of course you can play him as a storm deck with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="High Tide" href="#" target="_blank">High Tide</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brain Freeze" href="#" target="_blank">Brain Freeze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and the usual offenders, but I wanted to look at a couple of other interesting decks you can build with this commander.</p>
<p>If you like the idea of a deck that casts a bunch of spells, makes a ton of tokens and draws all of the cards you will probably also like <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/technically-playable-tura-kennerud-skyknight">my last article</a> as well as this one.</p>
<p>As with all <em>Technically Playable</em> articles, this was a very quick look at <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Baral, Chief of Compliance" href="#" target="_blank">Baral, Chief of Compliance</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as a commander, and a few of the cards that can really make a deck with Baral, Chief of Compliance as the commander tick.</p>
