It's Friday, August 1st, and that means it's time for Edge of Eternities to release! This is all fine and dandy for Eternal formats like Legacy, Vintage, and Commander. But what does this mean for Standard rotation? For a lot of players, especially those entering from Final Fantasy, this marks their first Standard play experience. However, it also means their first rotation. So, if you're curious about what this means for that format, read on, and we'll explain!
What Rotates In?
So far, Edge of Eternities is the only set to come into the Standard format for the 2025-2027 rotation. This answer seems simple enough. Additionally, you must remember that Commander-specific cards and the Stellar Sights bonus sheet do not count as Standard-legal unless they're in a set that is, in fact, otherwise Standard-legal.
What Rotates Out?
Alas, this is where things get a little trickier. With EOE's rotation, Standard rotates five sets out of the format:
- Dominaria United
- The Brothers' War
- Phyrexia: All Will Be One
- March of the Machine
- March of the Machine: Aftermath
Because Aftermath is a Standard-legal set, despite being overtly underutilized in the format, we must tally it as one of the five rotating sets. Oh well. Anyway!
What Rotates Out Next?
We look to an even trickier rotation next time. In 2027, the following nine sets will rotate out of Standard:
- Wilds of Eldraine
- The Lost Caverns of Ixalan
- Murders at Karlov Manor
- Outlaws of Thunder Junction
- Bloomburrow
- Duskmourn: House of Horror
- Aetherdrift
- Tarkir: Dragonstorm
- Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy
What About Foundations and Edge of Eternities?
Magic's latest core product, Foundations, is legal up until 2029. At that time, another core product will replace it, according to Wizards of the Coast. Furthermore, in 2029, we presume Edge of Eternities will also rotate out, unless something changes between now and then regarding the Standard rotation schedule and structure.
Rotation Can Be Revolutionary
With that long timeline, it may be a bit daunting for newer players. However, keep in mind that you'll have the ability to play with all of these cards in a wide variety of formats and on the kitchen table, if you so wish. Besides, with Standard rotation being as drawn-out as it is, we anticipate you'll enjoy the new decks you're making for a long time anyway!
And now, we want to ask you, dear readers, about your thoughts on rotation. If you're new, what are your concerns about this phenomenon? If you've been around the block, what can you say to quell these concerns? No matter your level of experience, feel free to sound off in the comments below!
