The Best New Commanders of 2025

<p>This week, we're going back in time and covering everything that came out for <em>Universes Beyond! </em>Here, we'll be giving an in-depth review for each of the major releases this year (<em>Secret Lairs</em> get their own section). This'll be a long article, so let's save my word count, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Commence the Endgame" href="#" target="_blank">Commence the Endgame</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>!</p>

<h2>Release #1: <em>Final Fantasy</em></h2>

<p>For this year, we begin with a bang so loud it could be heard across the world. The <em>Final Fantasy</em> set took the community by storm, becoming the <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/final-fantasy-best-selling-mtg-set-before-official-release-date">fastest-selling set before it was even released</a>!</p>
<p>In addition, this set had something for everyone. Commander, as a whole, got plenty of goodies from the main set, to the bonus sheet, to the <em>Secret Lairs</em> (more on those in that section). I even set out to write an article featuring only cards from this release, which you can read about <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/beyond-the-multiverse-the-final-fantasy-sendoff">here</a>. Many cards, including the new additions from the precons, are still being played in the format.</p>
<p>Even though he's banned in Standard, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vivi Ornitier" href="#" target="_blank">Vivi Ornitier</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is still sending chills down the spines of players everywhere. Meanwhile, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER" href="#" target="_blank">Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is perhaps the most powerful <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blood Artist" href="#" target="_blank">Blood Artist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effect ever printed, and on a commander option no less.</p>
<p>However, I can't say this was all a bed of roses. The set had a higher power level than usual, including Vivi, who has traumatized Standard players everywhere, and thus may react when we use a deck for him.</p>
<p>Speaking of Standard, this set was the first in the <em>Universes Beyond</em> product line to be Standard legal, a decision I don't endorse. Maybe the next set will be better, no?</p>

<h2>Release #2: <em>Spider-Man</em></h2>

<p>...Okay, maybe not.</p>
<p>This set was met with quite the negative reception. Sure, this release drew in some people, but even I admit that this was the worst <em>Universes Beyond</em> set this year. This is true especially when we compare it to the other releases.</p>
<p>The highlight card is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Soul Stone" href="#" target="_blank">The Soul Stone</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, a card with Commander usage, and some long-term implications. Many were quick to point out a new plane in the Multiverse, named New York City (this is a joke, by the way). While I could go on about how it was received, it's not to say its Commander applications were useless.</p>
<p>Aside from The Soul Stone, we got our mitts on some tri-color commanders, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gwen Stacy" href="#" target="_blank">Gwen Stacy</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and a five-color option in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cosmic Spider-Man" href="#" target="_blank">Cosmic Spider-Man</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. If you asked me what I did with this set, I'd tell you nothing, but I did plan on making Cosmic Spider-Man with cards mostly from this set. We also got a lot of new Spider support, including <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mary Jane Watson" href="#" target="_blank">Mary Jane Watson</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, who's certainly going on a date with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shelob, Child of Ungoliant" href="#" target="_blank">Shelob, Child of Ungoliant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>...Wait a minute. Nah, it's probably nothing.</p>

<h2>Release #3: <em>Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA)</em></h2>

<p>To out my thoughts shortly: <em>Spider-Man</em> walked, so <em>ATLA</em> could run.</p>
<p>There's no mistaking it. People were excited for this set, and for good reason. While we did get yet another five-color option in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Avatar Aang" href="#" target="_blank">Avatar Aang</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, his design was actually more creative than what we got with Cosmic Spider-Man.</p>
<p>Plus, we also got as plethora of unique and interesting two and three-color commander choices. One of the most popular of these is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fire Lord Azula" href="#" target="_blank">Fire Lord Azula</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, who'll be copying spells left and right. Meanwhile, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fire Lord Zuko" href="#" target="_blank">Fire Lord Zuko</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is another take on an exile deck that'll give <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Prosper, Tome-Bound" href="#" target="_blank">Prosper, Tome-Bound</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> decks a new color.</p>
<p>The heavy presence of Ally cards really bolstered the creature type, even giving it a couple of new commanders in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Katara, the Fearless" href="#" target="_blank">Katara, the Fearless</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sokka, Tenacious Tactician" href="#" target="_blank">Sokka, Tenacious Tactician</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="General Tazri" href="#" target="_blank">General Tazri</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> decks will never be the same again, I assure you.</p>
<p>While this set wasn't on the same power level as <em>Final Fantasy</em>, the flavor and unique mechanics makes it a major competitor for <em>Universes Beyond</em> Set of the Year.</p>

<h2>Bonus: The Secret Lair Drops</h2>

<p>To wrap up this review, we have ourselves a myriad of Secret Lair Drops that gave us some new IPs to work with.</p>
<p>Kicking this off was <em>Marvel,</em> again. This time, with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deadpool, Trading Card" href="#" target="_blank">Deadpool, Trading Card</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Great card, if you want to give judges a headache.</p>

<p>Secondly, the <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/beyond-the-multiverse-whos-that-under-the-sea-spongebob-squarepants"><em>SpongeBob SquarePants</em> Superdrop</a>, which brought us reskins of existing cards. Nothing too special about these drops beyond that, unless you were lucky enough to pull a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Smothering Tithe|sld|7009" href="#" target="_blank">Smothering Tithe</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Next, we had the aforementioned <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/secret-lair-x-final-fantasy-three-new-drops-revealed"><em>Final Fantasy</em> drops</a>, which were jam-packed with strong reprints to go with the main release. On a personal note, I remember this release destroying my mental health so badly that it took me months to recover (There's a part of me that hasn't).</p>
<p>Later in the year, we got the next batch of drops <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/secret-lair-x-sonic-three-new-drops-officially-announced">in the form of the <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> franchise</a>. These featured mechanically unique legends in one of the drops, while the rest were reskins of existing cards. There was chatter about <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shadow the Hedgehog" href="#" target="_blank">Shadow the Hedgehog</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> making waves in higher brackets, but I don't know if that's still true.</p>
<p>After that was a <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/secret-lair-drops-for-spider-man-release-on-september-22nd">Superdrop themed around <em>Spider-Man</em></a>, but I remember the Venom-related drops being the most prominent of the lot.</p>
<p>Next, we had a big surge in IPs, <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/big-reveals-at-the-secret-lair-panel-at-magiccon-atlanta">from <em>The Office</em> to various <em>PlayStation</em> games</a> and, eventually, to <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/secret-lair-webstore-hints-at-monster-hunter-drops"><em>Monster Hunter</em></a>. The <em>PlayStation </em>ones were all mechanically unique with several interesting new commanders. In the midst of it all was the <em>ATLA </em>superdrop, which featured <em>ATLA</em>-themed reprints for those wanting to play with the IP.</p>
<p>...Whew. That was a long list.</p>

<h2>Ride Unto a New Dawn</h2>
<p>And that's a wrap for this year's <em>Universes Beyond</em> releases.</p>
<p>With next year featuring four sets, plus loads of <em>Secret Lair </em>drops, it'll be interesting to see if I can contain it in one article.</p>
<p>Originally, this week was supposed to be for a deck tech, but a hiccup in the scheduling has moved it into next year. This is better for me, because it meant that I can avoid the awkward situation of ruining my advent calendar to write up my articles, especially in the middle of the month. Good thing I got a second box for this purpose.</p>

2025: The Year in Universes Beyond

<p>Mark your calendars and set your alarms, <em>Magic</em> connoisseurs! The 2025 Festival in a Box product, coinciding with MagicCon Atlanta, launches at noon Eastern Time on Monday, August 18th. This <em>Magic</em> product has a very high chance of selling out extremely fast, so if you're planning to grab it, you've got to prepare! But what's inside the box, and why is it so popular? Read on, and find out more!</p>
<h2>Festival in a Box Atlanta 2025 Contents</h2>
<p>For starters, please refer to our previous content covering the announcement of this product <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/festival-in-a-box-atlanta-announced-for-2025">by clicking here</a>. But for those of you who simply want to know more right away without a new link, here is the general breakdown of the product's contents:</p>

Those cards are quite valuable on the secondary market and are a big selling point for the Festival in a Box this time around.</p>
<h2>Where to Purchase</h2>
<p>You can find this Festival in a Box product at MagicCon Atlanta or by visiting <a href="https://secretlair.wizards.com/us/#fiab_atlanta_2025">the <em>Secret Lair</em> website</a>. The queue on the website is almost guaranteed to fill up super-quickly for this item in particular, so you'll want to get on as soon as you can, ahead of noon. If you're planning on buying this item, keep your mouse hand sharp, and click in at noon, or at least as close to noon as humanly possible. Also, expect a long wait and anticipate that you may not be able to get the box in time before they're all snagged. This is a normal part of the <em>Secret Lair</em> experience nowadays.</p>
<p>One other thing to note is that there is no confirmed price on the Festival in a Box at the time of writing. It is likely priced at $250 based on past precedent. That said, it has cost as low as $200 before, and it's possible that it could cost more than $250 this time around, so bear that in mind!</p>

Festival in a Box Atlanta 2025 Launching At Noon EST

You're heading to a MagicCon and perusing the mammoth list of artists who'll be in attendance, and wondering if there's an efficient way to search through your decks to see just how many cards you're playing that were illustrated by those artists.</p>
<p>To help, Archidekt has just announced a new "<a href="https://archidekt.com/magiccon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MagicCon</a>" feature, free for users of the deckbuilding website. For the upcoming MagicCon Vegas, there are <a href="https://mcvegas.mtgfestivals.com/en-us/art-of-magic/artist-directory.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a whopping 61 artists</a> who'll be on-hand to sign cards, sell prints and tokens, and chat with attendees. And with Archidekt's help, you can arrive prepared.</p>
<h2>How to Use the Archidekt Artist Search Feature</h2>
<p>Previously, you'd have two options. You could have simply memorized every card done by every artist. Or, you could open up Scryfall, search cards by each artist, and cross-reference that with every card in every deck you've got.</p>
<p>Now, simply sign in (though it's not required) to Archidekt, choose your deck from the drop-down menu or import a text list, and Archidekt will tell you instantly which cards in your deck were illustrated by artists who'll be attending MagicCon Vegas.</p>

<p>Happy February! My name is Ben, and you may know me from <em>Conditions Allow</em>, my article series on EDHREC and <a href="https://commandersherald.com/tag/conditions-allow/">Commander's Herald</a>. It is my great pleasure to bring the Archidekt Deckbuilding Contest to EDHREC.</p>
<p>This will be a monthly contest with a different theme each month.</p>
<p>Your goal is to build a Commander legal deck that fulfills the prompt in a creative or unique fashion. At the end of each month, three finalists will be selected for you to vote on.</p>
<p>Whoever gets the most votes will be crowned the winner, although all three finalists receive a prize.</p>
<p>This is the second contest of the year, so we're focusing on the number two. Specifically, two color decks that do something unexpected.</p>

<h3>What’s The Contest All About?</h3>
<p>Working within the parameters of the prompt provided below, construct a decklist with your own creative spin. Three chosen finalists will be awarded store credit to <a href="https://www.cardsphere.com/">cardsphere.com</a>.</p>
<p><strong>For February's deckbuilding contest, brew a two color Commander-legal deck with a theme or strategy not usually seen in those colors. The more unexpected your deck's theme is, the better.</strong></p>

<p>One of <em>Magic: The Gathering's</em> defining features is the color pie, which defines what each of the five colors can do in the game. This ensures each color plays differently, and allows players to express themselves through the cards they choose to include in their decks.</p>
<p>Each of these identities can also be interpreted in different ways, which opens up many different styles of play even among the same colors.</p>

<p>With thirty years of cards to choose from, however, there's no reason to limit your deckbuilding to what the color pie says. Every year we get new cards that push and pull the colors in different directions.</p>
<p>Can you build a <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> landfall deck, or a <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> control deck? What about a <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> lifegain deck? You're not supposed to, but that shouldn't stop us from trying.</p>

<p>This is also a great exercise for building a color pair you're very familiar with. Thinking outside the box is a great way to break old patterns and reignite a passion you might've lost.</p>
<p>Similarly, this could be the perfect time to revisit a color pair you don't like. What used to be strange and unwieldy can become fresh and invigorating when approached from a different angle.</p>
<p>If you love Burn decks, try porting that to Azorius, or take your favorite Orzhov deck and rebuild it as Simic.</p>

<h3>How To Participate</h3>

<li>Brew an EDH/Commander legal deck on <a href="https://archidekt.com/">Archidekt</a> that satisfies the prompt.</li>
<li>Any unreleased cards spoiled during the contest’s duration are allowed.</li>
<li>Silver-bordered and acorn cards, while cool, are not allowed.</li>
<li>Digital-only cards (such as those designed for the Alchemy format on Arena) are not allowed.</li>
<li>Strictly one deck submitted per user.</li>
</ul>
<p>Reply to the <a href="https://archidekt.com/forum/thread/11254934">Archidekt newspost</a>, or submission post on the <a href="https://discord.gg/sctEc9Ru36">Archidekt Discord</a> with a link to your deck before <strong>9:00 pm EST</strong> (UTC -5, currently) on <strong>Wednesday, February 12, 2025</strong> (do not submit the same deck in multiple places). Only one submission per user! From the eligible submissions, we'll select three finalists with lists that we believe best embody the spirit of the prompt. Deck descriptions are not required but certainly may provide valuable context!</p>
