<p>Hey friends, Beth, the Queen of Cardboard here, with the Precon Upgrade Guide for Masters of Evil, the Doctor Who Commander Deck. These decks are incredibly powerful and synergistic untouched, so I've chosen to focus on the face commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Davros, Dalek Creator" href="#" target="_blank">Davros, Dalek Creator</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and use Daleks and Cybermen with a little artifact help from the Universes Within.</p>
<p>With the changes we're making, we'll overtake our opponents with an army of artifact creatures, while using their abilities to frustrate our opponents and stall their decks.</p>
<h2>Exterminate!</h2>

<p>Davros is looking for you to make your opponents lose life, but by creating Daleks with menace it swings towards being a combat-based deck that focuses on artifact token creation. In this deck, we're not primarily looking to drain the board via spells or abilities, instead we're going to swing in for big beats and overtake our opponents with a wide board state. Keeping in mind cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dalek Squadron" href="#" target="_blank">Dalek Squadron</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Dalek Emperor" href="#" target="_blank">The Dalek Emperor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cult of Skaro" href="#" target="_blank">Cult of Skaro</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, I've included <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer" href="#" target="_blank">Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as a necessary card for this deck.</p>

<p>Brudiclad gives all our creature tokens haste and creates Myr tokens as well. The best part of this card, however, is the ability to turn all tokens into a copy of any token you control. This means the tokens that Brudiclad and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oni-Cult Anvil" href="#" target="_blank">Oni-Cult Anvil</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> create can also become 3/3 Daleks with menace, or you could choose to lean even further into token creation and turn everything into Dragons, Angels, or even Pegasi. With tokens, there is a myriad of options to choose from.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ashad, the Lone Cyberman" href="#" target="_blank">Ashad, the Lone Cyberman</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can create a token copy of the first nonlegendary artifact spell we cast each turn, giving more options for Brudiclad to transform every token into. Imagine a board full of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Auton Soldier" href="#" target="_blank">Auton Soldier</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>s; or don't, it's a little scary, to say the least.</p>
<h2>Artificers Through Time and Space</h2>

<p>With all of the scary things happening on our board, we'll need to be prepared to act quickly and have a defense plan. To lower the cost of our artifact spells I've added in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Etherium Sculptor" href="#" target="_blank">Etherium Sculptor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Enthusiastic Mechanaut" href="#" target="_blank">Enthusiastic Mechanaut</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Because these creatures are also artifacts themselves, it will only add synergy to what the deck is trying to do.</p>
<p>For some protection, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Padeem, Consul of Innovation" href="#" target="_blank">Padeem, Consul of Innovation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Padeem is extremely helpful in not only giving almost the entire board hexproof, but also allowing us to draw if we control the artifact with the highest mana value each upkeep. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Workshop Elders" href="#" target="_blank">Workshop Elders</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, the only other non-artifact creature I added to the deck, gives our artifact creatures flying. If I've learned anything from Limited, it's that flying is good. Many decks struggle to deal with flying, and since we plan to create a large board state, this will help us swing in and kill faster.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Master Transmuter" href="#" target="_blank">Master Transmuter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows us to pick up any artifact we control and replace it with one in our hand. It's going to feel extremely good to replace a 1/1 Construct with a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Karn, Legacy Reforged" href="#" target="_blank">Karn, Legacy Reforged</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Finally, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge" href="#" target="_blank">Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While not an artifact himself, Tezzeret helps us cast every other creature spell we have for little to nothing, as well as deal damage to each opponent equal to the number of artifacts we control. Did I say we weren't doing that? Oops. While this isn't the primary goal of the deck, Tezzeret is just too good not to be included here. In addition to the +2 ability, his -3 recurs any artifact from the graveyard to hand, and if we're so lucky as to get to -8 we'll be able to exile the top 10 cards of our library and put any artifact within straight to the battlefield. There's a good chance for big drops here as most of the spells in this deck are, in fact, artifacts.</p>
<p>Rounding out the additions to the deck are our support spells. I focused on adding spells that would provide value without detracting from the overall focus of the deck. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kuldotha Forgemaster" href="#" target="_blank">Kuldotha Forgemaster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> tutors any artifact directly to the battlefield. Because we'll have to sacrifice something to do so, we also have the additional recursion from <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scrap Trawler" href="#" target="_blank">Scrap Trawler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Silas Renn, Seeker Adept" href="#" target="_blank">Silas Renn, Seeker Adept</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mystic Forge" href="#" target="_blank">Mystic Forge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows us to cast off the top of the library or help us by exiling a card to get through the deck faster. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lithoform Engine" href="#" target="_blank">Lithoform Engine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can copy any spell, ability, or permanent, because one thing is great, but two is better. Finally, I added mana rocks, but these are optional slots that you could choose instead to include even more powerful options.</p>

<h2>Parting of the Ways</h2>
<p>Removing cards from a deck is always hard, especially from decks in this series as they're so synergistic and have meaning and a story within the deck itself. For this deck, I chose to focus on artifacts as the main theme of the deck, which meant that while Cybermen and Daleks had a home, 17 cards in the deck had to go.</p>

<p>I chose to remove most of the Masters, as they felt like commanders to their own decks, each with a unique talent and theme. An argument could be made to include <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Master, Multiplied" href="#" target="_blank">The Master, Multiplied</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in this upgraded deck, but I'll leave that up to you.</p>

<h2>What Remains</h2>
<p>With only 17 changes in this deck, there's a lot of flavor left to be had. All of the original spells are still in the deck as well as our Cybermen. This gives the deck a Cybermen vs. Dalek feel, which flavorfully is fun and interesting. The land base is set to 37, and this is the first time I didn't drop any basics in a precon upgrade. Some things could be tweaked to make this deck even more unique or powerful, and I'd love to see your deck lists below.</p>

<h1>If Not Gruul, Then Why? If Not Gruul, Then You Lie. If Not, Gruul Then DIE!</h1>
<p>The question of planeswalkers as commanders has been brought up in <em>Magic</em> discourse an infinite number of times. People say it would kill EDH as a format, and others say it will do nothing but give more options to an endless pool of commanders. I believe the truth is somewhere in the middle. My name is Nick, and the tenth installment of <em>Myth Realized</em> will cover Gruul (red, green) cards and how they would each ruin (or not ruin) your favorite 100-card singleton format.</p>

<p>It's taken ten articles, but we finally have a flip walker that isn't a legendary creature on the front side. I saw this card opened by my best friend at prerelease for this set (this was the only card he wanted), and it was a house in Limited. This card is easy to flip, as it only cares about what you are doing to flip the card, and the backside of this card is a game-winner in its own right. The downside is that you must wait a turn after flipping this card to use the backside abilities, delaying your ability to win the game. A solid choice for Gruul Werewolves if you want to go that way, and with its offering, this might be the way to go, especially if you do not want to deal with a mentally taxing mechanic like on our next card.</p>

<p>Daybound (If a player casts no spells during their own turn it becomes night next turn) / Nightbound (If a player casts at least two spells during their own turn, it becomes day next turn). The fix for the new-age Werewolves of the game. It's mentally taxing and often ignored in Commander when you're only playing one card with this mechanic, but it's crucial for the sake of this discussion. This card is elegant in dealing with an ability that's sometimes out of your control. Giving creatures flash and a bonus when they enter the battlefield is fantastic for a +1 ability. Making two Wolves for -3 is a bit worse. On the back side, having a +2 that adds mana makes situations more reasonable when you need to cast two spells to flip Arlinn back. The 0 to turn your Commander into a 5/5 with keywords is fine when you need it and ignorable in every other situation. This and the previous version of the card are serviceable and a welcome surprise when looking at some of the past walkers we have seen in the series.</p>

<p>Pop quiz time: What is the rule around 3 mana value planeswalkers? That's right, readers, we <strong>always</strong> pay attention to them. And this might sound wild, but I think this card would be hated in "casual" Commander and not quite strong enough for "competitive" Commander. Individual feelings on the words casual/competitive aside, the ability that matters to this card is the +1 adding colored mana and not allowing creatures to be countered. Lower-powered players/decks and new players often lament an opponent's counterspell, and when it's cast toward one of the giant haymaker creatures they just put in their deck it feels even worse. The card fixes that problem. Higher-powered players/decks and seasoned players often appreciate the ability to interact with cards before they hit the battlefield. This card makes that not an option. Un-counterability from the command zone in colors that prioritize creatures over most other things in the game takes this card from a strong card for playgroups that dislike interaction or have started to embrace the good side of countermagic. It's something that has the potential to be a menace in formats where countermagic is necessary, and losing to combat is often an afterthought.</p>

<p>"Solid" might be the best adjective to describe Gruul walkers. Nothing on this card is "bad" outside of the ultimate, but the two abilities you want to use on this card are not so good that you would warp a deck to fit around this card. Making mana to cast a creature and giving that creature a bonus when it comes in solid. Creature selection on a downtick that does not immediately lose this planeswalker is also solid. At 4, say it with me now...solid. This card will never be the worst thing you have, but it might never be the best thing either, and sometimes, that is what you want in a commander.</p>

<p>The first...and thankfully, only time I have to say this in the article. This is a planeswalker-deck walker, and it is not very good. With that out of the way, why is it not very good? Six mana is too much for what you get from this version of Domri. The +2 is legitimately good, giving your entire team a buff, and haste is a way to win or assist in winning. The rest of this card is significantly below the curve. A -3 for a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lightning Bolt" href="#" target="_blank">Lightning Bolt</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is sad, and for the equivalent of casting the card after resolving <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doubling Season" href="#" target="_blank">Doubling Season</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, -8 for those not keeping track, you get three 1/1 counters and trample on the creature(s) that get those counters. Yuck. I don't think this card is justifiable even with the +2, as there are many, many cards in this color combination that can do some or all of this effect.</p>

<p>A planeswalker from a somewhat infamous block, we see another three-mana version of Domri. This card has been out for a while and hasn't made any waves, but the fact remains: this card is solid. Domri Rade might be the poster child for how many RG-but-mainly-mono-green planeswalkers operate. A plus ability that gives you a version of card draw/selection. A minus ability that lets you use your, ideally, bigger and better creatures to remove your opponents' creatures, in this case by fighting. And an ultimate that most certainly wins the game. And win the game this does. Double strike, trample, hexproof, and haste are terrifying keywords. And even more so due to this being on an unremovable emblem. Once again, solid.</p>

<p>This card is <em>not</em> solid, and this character is not well-liked in the community. Compleated, another mechanic not yet seen due to when I started writing the series, is featured on this card. Compleated allows you to pay the appropriate color or two life (thanks Phyrexia<em>), </em>and if life was paid, this card enters with two fewer loyalty. At five mana and five loyalty, having this card come in with only three counters is a killer. Losing the ability to the -4 if you pay the reduced cost is a bad look for this card, and the other abilities aren't looking so good that I would want this at four mana and two life instead of just five mana. This is also the only Gruul walker that restricts what the mana it produces can be used on. The two other Domri, Arlinn, and a walker to be named later, have either no restrictions or grant a bonus if used on a creature. Mix all this together, and we get a very unimpressive planeswalker.</p>

<p>The first appearance of Samut falls somewhere between Lukka and Domri. The +1 is fine, and the -2 is lackluster. The ultimate has game-winning potential, and with another four mana cost in the top right corner, this card can find its place among the masses. The biggest knock against this card is that the creature versions of this card do things just a bit better. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Samut, Vizier of Naktamun" href="#" target="_blank">Samut, Vizier of Naktamun</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Samut, Voice of Dissent" href="#" target="_blank">Samut, Voice of Dissent</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> push the aggression a bit better than the planeswalker version. However, we can always run those cards as commanders; we cannot in the case of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Samut, the Tested" href="#" target="_blank">Samut, the Tested</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>Another solo appearance of a planeswalker from a particular product, in this case <em>War of the Spark</em> (<em>WAR</em>). And with it, I'll continue to declare another appearance of a four-man Gruul commander being solid. A static ability that gives all your creatures haste is never going to be bad to have access to. A quick Scryfall search gives me 56 cards with this particular combination of words, 55 if you remove <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Immediate Action" href="#" target="_blank">Immediate Action</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> because it is a conspiracy. So it's not as if this is unheard of, and outside of mono-blue and mono-white, there's an effect in all mono colors, colorless, and a variety of color combinations. This is a wanted effect, even more so in the color combination most likely to turn things sideways. Now, like the uncommon walkers from <em>WAR</em>, we only have one ability, reducing loyalty and limiting the uses. But this can stick around at five starting loyalty and a -1 downtick. For reasons I cannot explain, the downtick gives +2/+1 to a creature, gives you a scry, but for some reason provides the creature with haste. The corner case for using this ability on an opponent's creature to activate its ability on your turn to somehow benefit you makes my head hurt.</p>

<p>If a trend hasn't emerged amongst the cards already discussed, it has now. We know the drill here: four mana value and an uptick ability that pumps creatures and gives haste. A way to "remove" your opponent(s) creature on the downtick, but instead of fighting, we get a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Threaten" href="#" target="_blank">Threaten</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effect. However, the ultimate on this card isn't as game-winning as some others in the rundown. A total of 20 power of flying lizards is good, but not coming in with haste is unfortunate. To complete the trend, this card earns another solid grade from me.</p>

<p>If you thought my earlier statement about <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Domri, Anarch of Bolas" href="#" target="_blank">Domri, Anarch of Bolas</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was outrageous, get ready. This card would do nothing but give you situational ramp out of the command zone. Is that bad? Not at all. Is it good? I am not so sure. For a card banned in Legacy and format-warping in Modern; the landscape is very different when not in a 1v1 setting. One damage to any target won't do much when stapled to a planeswalker. Having a land in your graveyard to reuse is good, but there are many ways to do this in green, often in easier ways. The ultimate has to be built around if that's your plan, and it is an ultimate far-off in the distance, even if this comes down on turn two. A 1v1 menace and, for a point in time, the best card in the format. When taken to a free-for-all though, some things do not stack up.</p>

<p>There's one big difference between Xenagos, the Reveler, and all the other four mana walkers who can add mana with an uptick. This one goes up exponentially. This card is so much better than it looks, and as a person who learned that after playing it, do<em> not</em> underestimate the Reveler. What makes this even better is this card makes its creatures who happen to have haste as a bonus. Now, the ultimate of this card can win a game, but it will either win you the game randomly or with prior setup. Either way, there should still be some value gained from it, even if it is not game-winning. A card that is more fun than the first look and the final card to be given a solid grade.</p>
<h2><strong>Wrap Up</strong></h2>
<p>What else to say but "solid"? Gruul is <strong>solid</strong>. These walkers are the most medium, good in specific builds, better than they look walkers I've covered up to this point. The only question marks for me would be, is my evaluation of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Domri, Anarch of Bolas" href="#" target="_blank">Domri, Anarch of Bolas</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> correct, and is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wrenn and Six" href="#" target="_blank">Wrenn and Six</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> better than I am giving it credit for? Nothing on here jumps out to me as bannable or dangerous for the health of the format, but I don't think there would be many of these showing up in games anyway. I don't expect to be correct in every evaluation across all the various colors I have covered and will cover. Still, I either have a massive blind spot for the Gruul color combination, or I've found the barometer for the rest of the series.</p>
<p>As stated earlier, if not Gruul, then die. Still, another option for you is to catch my next article focusing on a color combination that is possibly the most opposed in ideologies to this one, Selesnya. Myth Realized - What if Any Planeswalker Could Be Your Commander? (Gruul)

<p>Hey friends, Beth, Queen of Cardboard here with another Precon Upgrade article. Today we'll tackle <em>Virtue and Valor</em>, the Selesnya precon from <em>Wilds of Eldraine. </em></p>
<p>As a casual Commander player, I'll be looking for cards that are on theme with the deck, allow for silly plays, and were missed in the original deck list. The biggest issue with this deck was the introduction of a new mechanic, Role tokens, but not using all of the roles available in <em>Wilds of Eldraine. </em>We're going to take a look at what we can include and why these Roles may or may not be the best fit for you.</p>
<p>It's no secret that Enchantress is a popular deck theme. In fact, going through my decks, I have no less than three Enchantress decks, two of them being from the most recent sets, <em>Wilds of Eldraine </em>and <em>Commander Masters. </em>So how do we build this deck in a way that feels fresh and new? Let's get into it.</p>
<h2>Virtuous Anthems</h2>

<p>Taking a look at the given commander in the deck, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ellivere of the Wild Court" href="#" target="_blank">Ellivere of the Wild Court</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, you'll notice that she has something no other Role-giver has: the ability to give Virtuous Roles.</p>

<p>If you don't have the ability to flip your phone upside down to read the token, Virturous is a token enchantment - Aura Role that gives the enchanted creature +1/+1 for each enchantment you control. This is an extremely strong enchantment that Ellivere gives to another target creature when she enters the battlefield or attacks. Knowing that we want more enchantments on the battlefield, I'm looking at a go-wide strategy with multiple anthem effects that lean towards pumping our creatures based on the number of enchantments we control. The deck already comes with some great options, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ethereal Armor" href="#" target="_blank">Ethereal Armor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Eidolon of Countless Battles" href="#" target="_blank">Eidolon of Countless Battles</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ancestral Mask" href="#" target="_blank">Ancestral Mask</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>Playing the deck proved to me that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mantle of the Ancients" href="#" target="_blank">Mantle of the Ancients</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was not only a perfect fit for this deck, but almost single-handedly won me the game several times. In addition to the great options the deck already included, I added <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="All That Glitters" href="#" target="_blank">All That Glitters</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Helm of the Gods" href="#" target="_blank">Helm of the Gods</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. These two options are perfectly on theme with the deck and add value to anything we've got on the board state. I also found a spot here for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hope Against Hope" href="#" target="_blank">Hope Against Hope</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, giving us +1/+1 for each creature on board. I kept <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Giant Inheritance" href="#" target="_blank">Giant Inheritance</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> from the original list because I liked its anthem effect, the ability to give the enchanted creature a Monster Role, and its self-recursion.</p>
<h2>If You Blink You'll Miss It</h2>
<p>Depending on the board state, you may not be interested in using Elliver in combat as often as some of the other creatures, since she can't target herself with her ability. So including a blink package to take advantage of her ability while keeping her on the sidelines is a no-brainer. Enchantment cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Teleportation Circle" href="#" target="_blank">Teleportation Circle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Skybind" href="#" target="_blank">Skybind</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Far Traveler" href="#" target="_blank">Far Traveler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> not only help the enchantment anthem effects, but also allow you to remove Ellivere from the battlefield and return her for another ETB trigger. Blinking the commander at instant speed with cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ephemerate" href="#" target="_blank">Ephemerate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cloudshift" href="#" target="_blank">Cloudshift</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> also saves her from targeted removal, giving both value and protection.</p>

<p>Some other creatures in the deck that can also take advantage of blinking are <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sun Titan" href="#" target="_blank">Sun Titan</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Syr Armont, the Redeemer" href="#" target="_blank">Syr Armont, the Redeemer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gylwain, Casting Director" href="#" target="_blank">Gylwain, Casting Director</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cursed Courtier" href="#" target="_blank">Cursed Courtier</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Eidolon of Blossoms" href="#" target="_blank">Eidolon of Blossoms</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Don't forget about <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Siona, Captain of the Pyleas" href="#" target="_blank">Siona, Captain of the Pyleas</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, as her ETB allows for a mini-tutor, looking at the top seven cards of your deck for an Aura. If you're looking to switch out the commander in this deck, this is the pick I'd make.</p>

<p>Filtering through your deck for all of your Auras is a quick way to end the game, and it helps that Siona creates a 1/1 Human Soldier token each time an Aura is attached to a creature. Unlike some other cards seen recently, this ability is not limited to once per turn, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of it. If you're looking to add a two-card infinite combo to this deck, adding <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shielded by Faith" href="#" target="_blank">Shielded by Faith</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will give you infinite ETB and infinite creature tokens.</p>
<h2>Instant Satisfaction</h2>
<p>The <em>Virtue and Valor</em> precon originally came with seven non-permanent spells. This felt incredibly low and something that needed a bit of help. A large amount of the blink package mentioned above will help protect the board state, but I also included cards that added to either our flavor, Roles, or some more interaction with our opponents.</p>

<p>These new spells might seem a little expensive, but the added value and flavor to the deck are worth it.</p>
<h2>Tough Cuts</h2>
<p>With this deck, there weren't a lot of cards that felt unnecessary, and I went over the list multiple times trying to prune here and adjust there. Even if you choose not to cut all of these cards, I'm confident that the cuts made here helped the deck in the end. There are so many Enchantress cards available that it could be built differently 100 times.</p>

<h2>Powerful Change</h2>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Light-Paws, Emperor&#039;s Voice" href="#" target="_blank">Light-Paws, Emperor&#039;s Voice</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a card that I've wanted to use in a deck since it was released. It's inexpensive and doubles the value of your Aura casts. With 14 available in the deck aside from the Role tokens, this can get out of control extremely fast. Speaking of out-of-control, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Calix, Guided by Fate" href="#" target="_blank">Calix, Guided by Fate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is going to double the amount of enchantments you have at the ready by copying them when combat damage is dealt by Calix or ANY enchanted creature you control. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sythis, Harvest&#039;s Hand" href="#" target="_blank">Sythis, Harvest&#039;s Hand</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a staple that I included to replace the non-enchantment card draw the deck included previously.</p>

<h2>In Conclusion</h2>
<p>When I first looked at this precon, I was tempted to remove the Role mechanic entirely. I wasn't sure I cared for it, especially since my previous Enchantress decks all wanted multiple enchantments. I was intimidated by the amount of triggers I had to keep up with, and it was "new." Playing the deck makes it clear that Roles are useful and the Virtuous Role is complete gas. It leaves me wondering if they'll be used more in the future and how I'll implement their abilities into other decks.</p>
<p>This deck currently comes in around $100 with upgrades, and I think that's pretty perfect for those looking to spice it up a little without breaking the bank.</p>

<p>Hello readers! My name is Beth, Queen of Cardboard, and this is the Precon Primer for the<em> Wilds of Eldraine Commander</em> deck <em>Virtue and Valor</em>. This deck may seem like just another enchantment deck, especially since it's coming on the heels of the <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/enduring-enchantments-precon-primer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Enduring Enchantments</em> deck</a> from <em>Commander Masters. </em>But if you look at the face commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ellivere of the Wild Court" href="#" target="_blank">Ellivere of the Wild Court</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, you'll note that the deck comes with a brand new Aura token type: Roles. Roles may seem confusing at first, but they're a perfect way to bring your token players and enchantment players together with one deck.</p>

<p>Ellivere is a four-cost Selesnya (green/white) 4/4 with a powerful ETB and attack trigger, creating a Virtuous Role token attached to another target creature. In addition to this ability, you're awarded a card draw any time an enchanted creature you control deals combat damage to a player. This is quite possibly one of the most synergistic cards I've seen in a while. And if you're a "cute card" lover like me, I want to tell you this one gets a 10/10.</p>
<p>But what's in a Role?</p>
<h2>Role for Value</h2>
<p>This is one of the few decks that I actually went back and played straight off the list, just to get used to this new mechanic.</p>
<p>There are seven Roles in <em>Wilds of Eldraine.</em> The other six roles are Royal, Sorcerer, Monster, Young Hero, Cursed, and Wicked. While you can only get Virtuous from Elliver, other cards in the the deck give you access to Monster, Sorcerer, Royal, and Young Hero.</p>
<p>So what do these roles do?</p>
<ul>
<li>Monster — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has trample.</li>
<li>Royal — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has ward 1.</li>
<li>Sorcerer — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has “Whenever this creature attacks, scry 1.”</li>
<li>Young Hero — Enchanted creature has “Whenever this creature attacks, if its toughness is 3 or less, put a +1/+1 counter on it.”</li>
<li>Virtuous — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 for each enchantment you control.</li>

<p>In addition to Ellivere, you have three other cards that grant Roles in the deck, most notably, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gylwain, Casting Director" href="#" target="_blank">Gylwain, Casting Director</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, the alternate commander. Unfortunately, for those who like seeing new cards in action, out of the 15 Role-giving cards available in these colors, this deck only included four.</p>

<h2>Enchantress Staples</h2>
<p>While the <em>Enduring Enchantments</em> deck focuses on Sagas and enchantment creatures, this one is all about Auras. Thanks to a commander that passes these out like candy, the Virtuous role is a star in the deck whether you use Gylwain or Ellivere as your main commander. The Totem Armors <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Snake Umbra" href="#" target="_blank">Snake Umbra</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bear Umbra" href="#" target="_blank">Bear Umbra</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> come in extremely useful when these big creatures ultimately are destroyed. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Umbra Mystic" href="#" target="_blank">Umbra Mystic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives Totem Armor to all your Auras, which overcomes board wipes and targeted removal. Constellation also makes a return in this deck, giving you value for each enchantment entering the battlefield.</p>

<p>The two all-stars in this deck are <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Songbirds&#039; Blessing" href="#" target="_blank">Songbirds&#039; Blessing</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mantle of the Ancients" href="#" target="_blank">Mantle of the Ancients</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. If we're being completely honest here, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mantle of the Ancients" href="#" target="_blank">Mantle of the Ancients</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is ridiculously good, especially when you bring back all your enchantments that your opponents thought were gone after casting a piece of key removal. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Songbirds&#039; Blessing" href="#" target="_blank">Songbirds&#039; Blessing</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows you to quickly move through the deck, finding more Auras and enchantment creatures to overcome your opponent with.</p>
<h2>Anthems Abound</h2>
<p>The steady strength of this deck is through anthem effects. The Virtuous Role gives the enchanted creature +1/+1 for each enchantment you control. In addition to this Role, there are the Auras <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ethereal Armor" href="#" target="_blank">Ethereal Armor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mantle of the Ancients" href="#" target="_blank">Mantle of the Ancients</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ancestral Mask" href="#" target="_blank">Ancestral Mask</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sage&#039;s Reverie" href="#" target="_blank">Sage&#039;s Reverie</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. This deck truly is giving you the option to go both wide and tall, quickly creating several big creatures that can be especially hard to defend against.</p>

<p>In addition to your Aura anthem cards, there are two creatures that have anthem effects for themselves. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aura Gnarlid" href="#" target="_blank">Aura Gnarlid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is especially nasty here because it can't be blocked by creatures with lesser power. There's a good chance if you're waiting to put this onto the battlefield that your creatures are also the biggest on the battlefield, giving you a huge, unblockable, killing machine. The Eidolon also pumps itself or can be Bestowed as an Aura to pump another creature. Pair either of these two with flying or trample and you've got two game-ending creatures.</p>
<h2>Interaction, I Barely Know Her</h2>
<p>One weakness of this deck is the lack of instant speed interaction and removal. While the <em>Fae Dominion</em> precon abounds in interaction, this deck has a total of two instants and five sorceries, not including the Adventure card <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Realm-Cloaked Giant" href="#" target="_blank">Realm-Cloaked Giant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Of the seven removal cards in the deck, three of them cost more than five mana, making removal seem like an afterthought. We're relying purely on overcoming the opponent by playing enchantment after enchantment as quickly as possible.</p>
<h2>Reprints, Not for the Weak</h2>
<p>This deck contains a LOT of reprints. However, in this list, they work. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Transcendent Envoy" href="#" target="_blank">Transcendent Envoy</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jukai Naturalist" href="#" target="_blank">Jukai Naturalist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> make all your Aura spells cheaper to cast, while <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Starfield Mystic" href="#" target="_blank">Starfield Mystic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> makes all enchantment spells cheaper. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Destiny Spinner" href="#" target="_blank">Destiny Spinner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> helps with the lack of interaction in the deck, making the majority of your spells uncounterable. And you've got tons of card draw in reprints like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Enchantress&#039;s Presence" href="#" target="_blank">Enchantress&#039;s Presence</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sage&#039;s Reverie" href="#" target="_blank">Sage&#039;s Reverie</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Snake Umbra" href="#" target="_blank">Snake Umbra</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>While it would have been nice to see these functions on new cards, these reprints provide essential value and make the deck incredibly difficult for opponents to deal with. This is a classic case of "If it's not broke, why fix it?" Or in the <em>Magic </em>world, "If there's a card that does it, why make a new one?"</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>While this deck tries to introduce a new mechanic, there are several Roles and cards missing that would have been easy includes in this list. While Ellivere is powerful and a perfect fit for this deck, you could interchange the face commander and alternate commander with ease, as Gylwain provides almost as much value as Ellivere. The Virtuous Role being applied multiple times a turn is insane, and with a flicker package you're going to make and destroy enemies on the board in a succinct manner. It makes sense that this Role is only available via one card in all of <em>Wilds of Eldraine</em>.</p>
