Welcome back to Wombo Combo, the article series where we evaluate EDH's best combo cards using data from EDHREC and Commander Spellbook. This edition, you may not want to blink, or you'll miss EDH's best instant combo cards!
Instants allow you to easily interrupt your opponents' plans by being castable at almost any point during the game. Some make your opponents extremely salty, like counterspells, while others simply provide good advantages that can help you prepare for incoming threats.
Let's take a look at the most notable instant combo cards and see what our spellbook can conjure up.
#10: Clockspinning
Deck Inclusions: 27,670 decks (0.97%)
ClockspinningClockspinning is a buyback card that allows you to put or remove a counter from a permanent. This works well with cards like Magistrate's ScepterMagistrate's Scepter and Sage of HoursSage of Hours, utilizing Clockspinning multiple times a turn to add counters for an extra turn. As Clockspinning targets permanents, it's also a great candidate for an Orvar, the All-FormOrvar, the All-Form deck, allowing you an easy and repeatable way to create tokens of your permanents.
Buyback spells also work well for storm and magecraft combos due to their inherent repeatability, and cards like Storm-Kiln ArtistStorm-Kiln Artist are your best friends for those combos.
#9: Frantic Search
Deck Inclusions: 369,269 decks (12.88%)
Frantic SearchFrantic Search is a popular card due to its incredibly useful effect, allowing you to loot twice and untap up to three lands. Untapping three lands will, likely, recuperate the cost of the spell, and possibly even gain mana depending what lands you have in play. A spell that can pay for itself is always great for cards like Underworld BreachUnderworld Breach for ease of casting. Frantic Search can also be included with commanders like Naru Meha, Master WizardNaru Meha, Master Wizard or Kitsa, Otterball EliteKitsa, Otterball Elite, using their abilities to copy Frantic Search over and over again alongside other cards.
#8: Nexus of Fate
Deck Inclusions: 44,787 decks (1.56%)
Extra turn spells are always useful for game-winning combos, but Nexus of FateNexus of Fate has two unique traits over most extra turn spells: it's an instant and it shuffles itself back into your library upon resolution. This allows Nexus of Fate to be easily tutorable, and you can do this infinitely by imprinting a tutor onto Isochron ScepterIsochron Scepter, or using cards like Varragoth, Bloodsky SireVarragoth, Bloodsky Sire to easily get Nexus of Fate back each turn.
With Nexus of Fate being an instant, you can imprint it via SpellbinderSpellbinder and Elite ArcanistElite Arcanist for similarly simple infinite turn combos. You can also use the newly unbanned Panoptic MirrorPanoptic Mirror with it or any extra turn spell.
#7: Narset's Reversal
Deck Inclusions: 97,495 decks (3.40%)
Narset's ReversalNarset's Reversal serves as a unique alternative to buyback, copying an instant or sorcery spell while returning the original spell to its owner's hand. This can lead to instant wins with Approach of the Second SunApproach of the Second Sun, or infinite magecraft triggers with Twinning StaffTwinning Staff. Narset's Reversal is used in a host of storm and magecraft combos, involving cards that we discussed earlier, like Frantic SearchFrantic Search and Storm-Kiln ArtistStorm-Kiln Artist. Many combos also involve copiers, such as Thousand-Year StormThousand-Year Storm, which allows a copy to target Narset's Reversal to also return it to your hand.
#6: Cloudshift (and others)
Deck Inclusions: 84,963 decks (3.18%)
CloudshiftCloudshift, alongside similar cards such as Essence FluxEssence Flux, simply blink a creature or permanent. This effect, while simple, is very useful for combos with cards like Dualcaster MageDualcaster Mage or ArchaeomancerArchaeomancer. Cloudshift is also a good candidate to trigger Preston, the VanisherPreston, the Vanisher into making token copies, or for banish-style creatures like Abdel Adrian, Gorion's WardAbdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward with the intent of kickstarting a combo by blinking a creature at instant speed.
#5: Pull from Eternity
Deck Inclusions: 10,136 decks (0.38%)
Pull from EternityPull from Eternity does what very few cards do (by intentional design), serving as a lifeline to grab a card out of exile. While Magic intentionally wants exile to be much more secluded than graveyards, it is nice to have a few options to pull things back into normal gameplay. Pull from Eternity can grab back cards like Ugin's NexusUgin's Nexus, flashback spells, or spells exiled by Shiko, Paragon of the WayShiko, Paragon of the Way. If you imprint Pull from Eternity onto Isochron Scepter, you can use extra turn spells such as Karn's Temporal SunderingKarn's Temporal Sundering and retrieve them back into your graveyard, where they can be cast via Backdraft HellkiteBackdraft Hellkite or a similar card.
#4: Saw in Half
Deck Inclusions: 95,155 decks (3.22%)
Saw in HalfSaw in Half comes from the EDH-legal side of Unfinity, and literally cuts a creature you control into two copies of it with half the power and toughness. Saw in Half fits your usual candidate cards for copy spells - Dualcaster MageDualcaster Mage, ArchaeomancerArchaeomancer, Cormela, Glamour ThiefCormela, Glamour Thief and the like. Since Saw in Half does give you two copies, however, it does also allow you to cast ritual spells (like Jeska's WillJeska's Will or Cabal RitualCabal Ritual) to gain some mana to fuel the combo. Saw in Half also can create an extremely large amount of creature tokens when you pair it with Ratadrabik of UrborgRatadrabik of Urborg and token doublers.
#3: Turnabout
Deck Inclusions: 24,971 decks (0.87%)
TurnaboutTurnabout is certainly fair play in Magic, and a great engine piece to untap all your artifacts, creatures and/or lands easily. Various ways to copy it exist, including many we've already discussed. Notably, Turnabout's effect can easily untap cards like Riptide LaboratoryRiptide Laboratory to return cards to your hand and cast them again. The mana provided can also activate cards like Mischievous QuanarMischievous Quanar or Mirror SheenMirror Sheen to easily copy Turnabout repeatedly.
#2: View from Above
Deck Inclusions: 2,478 decks (0.09%)
View from AboveView from Above is our hidden gem of this list, again giving itself a psuedo-buyback if you control a white permanent. View from Above is a cheap and attractive card for Orvar decks and Kykar, Wind's FuryKykar, Wind's Fury. It doesn't necessarily add white to your color identity either - cards like Aether ChannelerAether Channeler and Captain's ClawsCaptain's Claws can get you the white permanent, or you can simply steal an opponent's if needed. View from Above also creates a simple two-card combo with Goldspan DragonGoldspan Dragon, as you target it to get a Treasure and sacrifice that for two mana.
#1: Ghostly Flicker
Deck Inclusions: 137,552 decks (4.80%)
Ghostly FlickerGhostly Flicker blows out the competition in this Wombo Combo, and for very good reason. Similar to Cloudshift, Ghostly Flicker is a blink spell, except it can blink two artifacts, creatures and/or lands. This flexibility allows for massive amounts of combo potential. Ghostly Flicker can be used in the same ways as Cloudshift, with additional combos involving Archaeomancer and a large producing land, cost reducers, magecraft cards, and Dualcaster Mage-style cards alike. Essentially for a base combo you'll want an artifact, creature, or land that enters untapped and can produce three or more mana, and a similar card to return Ghostly Flicker to your hand or copy it.
There are far too many combinations to list them here, but Commander Spellbook can certainly help you flick through the options for the best one for your deck.
Honorable Mentions

2. ReiterateReiterate: Another buyback spell suitable for storm and magecraft combos.
3. High TideHigh Tide: An easy way to add more mana from your Islands, enabling several landfall combos.
