<h1>A Rough Beginning</h1>
<p>Welcome to <em>Rolebuilding,</em> where I blend my fraternal-twin hobbies of tabletop roleplaying games and <em>Magic: The Gathering</em> for your delight and amusement! In this series we’ll choose a role or character from the realms of <em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons</em> and embark on a quest based on their motivations. Today we're experimenting with an unusual race and class combination: Orc Warlock. We'll be using the 5th Edition supplement <em>Volo's Guide to Monsters </em>as our source of lore, as it provides us with a rich background on Orcs.</p>
<p>Orc spellcasters are rare because Orcs have little love for magic. They value martial strength above all else as it fuels their brutal lifestyle of pillage and murder. Volo tells us, "Orcs survive through savagery and force of numbers. Theirs is a life that has no place for weakness, and every warrior must be strong enough to take what is needed by force." The early years of orcs' lives are "fraught with tests of strength, fierce competition[,] and nothing in the way of maternal or paternal love."</p>
<h3 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Mom? Dad?</strong></h3>

<p>Volo continues, "The children that can't endure the rigors of a life of combat are culled from the main body of the tribe, taken into the depths of the lair, and left for the followers of Yurtrus or Shargaas to accept or reject." These are the Orc gods of disease and darkness - bad news. There's no room in an Orc tribe for a runt, which is a perfect setup for our story.</p>

<h2>Way of the Warlock</h2>
<p>A Warlock's power is defined by a pact with an otherworldly entity. Contrast this to a Wizard, who formally studies magic and memorizes spells, or a Sorceror, who has a natural font of magic that they harness. Warlocks are sworn and beholden to a non-deific being like an Archfey, a Fiend, a Celestial, or something from the Far Realm. Typically, the individual will seek out these ethereal beings in search of power, but it doesn't always happen that way.</p>

<p>In our story, I envision a rejected Orc teenager, cast down to the deepest layer of the tribe's lair, preparing to be judged by the Orc gods of death and disease. Too weak to lead the life of a warrior, most orcs would succumb to despair from such a rejection, having been raised with only this one goal in mind. Not us. We aren't sad - we're mad. We're angry that our tribe failed to see our abilities, judged us so narrowly, and cast us down, sentenced to death or a life of misery outside the tribe.</p>

<p>Our anger is perceived by an opportunistic Archfey, one who watches over the elf tribes with whom our brethren regularly clash. Orcs hate elves, and elves hate orcs. Volo explains, "The enmity between the two races cuts to the core, and no Orc will leave an elf alive. Orcs become so frenzied in combat against elves...[the] only trophies of any worth are the heads of their enemies." When this cunning Archfey reaches out to us and offers us the power to take vengeance against our own people, it serves both her interest and ours. We agree to her terms, and our path to vengeance begins.</p>

<h2>I'm Not Projecting, You're Projecting</h2>
<p>Using our newly-bestowed powers, we'll try to blast our way out of the tribe's lair to freedom. We'll need to test our abilities as we begin our journey to the surface and encounter our former instructors.</p>

<p>Powerful abilities indeed! There are only <a href="https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&amp;order=name&amp;q=%28type%3Acreature+type%3Alegendary+type%3Aorc%29">three Legendary Orc creatures</a>, and Mardu Zurgo seems like a suitably angry choice. Zurgo's EDHREC <a href="https://edhrec.com/commanders/zurgo-helmsmasher">commander page</a> indicates that Equipment is a common theme, with five of the top ten High Synergy cards being specific to that archetype. Equipment is not a great fit for our story, so let's dig deeper.</p>
<p>Warlocks use a class-specific spell called Eldritch Blast that they learn to augment with various invocations. Let's find our Orcling's Eldritch Blast equivalent on Zurgo's commander page to help guide our deckbuilding.</p>

<p>Only found in 8% of Zurgo decks, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arcbond" href="#" target="_blank">Arcbond</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> slots in as our adapted Eldritch Blast. It hurts everything in sight when Zurgo takes damage, a fitting metaphor for adolescence. It also suits the theme of our quest since we're lashing out against anyone or anything standing in the way of our freedom. Now we need to augment Arcbond like a Warlock would and bend it to our purpose. The <a href="https://edhrec.com/themes/burn">Burn</a> and <a href="https://edhrec.com/themes/group-slug">Group Slug</a> EDHREC theme pages should be able to help us here.</p>

<p>Arcbond wants damage to be dealt to Zurgo so that we can maximize damage to our opponents and their creatures. We could wait for our opponents to block him, but we can more reliably dish out pain to others by inflicting it upon ourselves. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deafening Clarion" href="#" target="_blank">Deafening Clarion</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> isn't the most powerful wrath, but it's cheap and has the added benefit of giving Zurgo lifelink, which will be important as we explore other Arcbond interactions. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Molten Disaster" href="#" target="_blank">Molten Disaster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Star of Extinction" href="#" target="_blank">Star of Extinction</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can each clear the field, and each come with added utility. We'll also want Commander staples like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chain Reaction" href="#" target="_blank">Chain Reaction</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blasphemous Act" href="#" target="_blank">Blasphemous Act</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for good measure.</p>

<h2>Redirecting is Caring</h2>
<p>Zurgo can't do all of the heavy lifting himself. With all the damage-dealing spells we're running, we won't be including many creatures, but the ones we do include will need to benefit from taking a hit or two.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spiteful Sliver" href="#" target="_blank">Spiteful Sliver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a less-versatile but equally spiteful <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spitemare" href="#" target="_blank">Spitemare</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. That may be the most spiteful sentence I've ever written, which means our flavor train is right on track. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Coalhauler Swine" href="#" target="_blank">Coalhauler Swine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a pre-Arcbonded creature that we love to see at the top of our curve. We want as many of these damage dorks as possible, so <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mogg Maniac" href="#" target="_blank">Mogg Maniac</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stuffy Doll" href="#" target="_blank">Stuffy Doll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> make the cut, too.</p>
<p>We can get further mileage out of Arcbond and our damaging spells by copying them. This isn't a big mana deck, so we'll rarely be playing <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fault Line" href="#" target="_blank">Fault Line</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> where X = 16, but it's feasible to play it for 8 and copy it.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Increasing Vengeance"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Fork"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Reverberate"></div></div>
<p>Twinning Arcbond with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Increasing Vengeance" href="#" target="_blank">Increasing Vengeance</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fork" href="#" target="_blank">Fork</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> produces some potentially dangerous results. With a well-timed <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Boros Charm" href="#" target="_blank">Boros Charm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and any two creatures, twinning <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arcbond" href="#" target="_blank">Arcbond</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> produces a full-table infinite damage loop with any sort of damage input. Using Zurgo with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stuffy Doll" href="#" target="_blank">Stuffy Doll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will produce the same results without the Charm; the Doll can even start the loop itself. This is one way to complete our quest: infinite damage to all of our opponents will grant us the win and the freedom we seek. Ideally we'll find a way to survive the blast.</p>

<h2>You Must Be Tired, Rest Here</h2>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rush of Vitality" href="#" target="_blank">Rush of Vitality</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the only instant-speed card that provides both indestructible and lifelink. We can target <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Coalhauler Swine" href="#" target="_blank">Coalhauler Swine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> just before dropping a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blasphemous Act" href="#" target="_blank">Blasphemous Act</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and profit, or we can target another damage dork just before twinning <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arcbond" href="#" target="_blank">Arcbond</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Provided we did our math correctly, our opponents should die before we do. Remember, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arcbond" href="#" target="_blank">Arcbond</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and our damage dorks deal the damage in these combos, so if we can grant Zurgo and his buddies lifelink in any way, we protect our own life total.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Personal Sanctuary" href="#" target="_blank">Personal Sanctuary</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> removes all concern for our own health, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shadowspear" href="#" target="_blank">Shadowspear</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a cheaper <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Loxodon Warhammer" href="#" target="_blank">Loxodon Warhammer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that provides special utility we may need to control our opponents' creatures. On the topic of special cards, this is a good time to mention one of our side quest win conditions.</p>

<h2>Pick a Number Between One and Anything</h2>

<p><a href="https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&amp;order=name&amp;q=%28oracle%3Aan+oracle%3Aamount+oracle%3Aof+oracle%3Adamage+oracle%3Aof+oracle%3Ayour+oracle%3Achoice%29">Here</a> are the Scryfall search results for the card text, "an amount of damage of your choice", which is not a choice commonly offered. We're roleplaying here, so we're all about choices.</p>
<p>It's not hard to see why this card is only found in 103 decks on EDHREC. There are lots of ways <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Volcano Hellion" href="#" target="_blank">Volcano Hellion</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can kill us, but we've included a couple ways it can <em>not</em> kill us, so we should talk about those. Casting <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rush of Vitality" href="#" target="_blank">Rush of Vitality</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tenacity" href="#" target="_blank">Tenacity</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in response to the Hellion's ETB trigger will protect our life total. In this situation, if we can hit the Swine or our <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arcbond" href="#" target="_blank">Arcbond</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>-ed general with this monster, choose 1 billion damage, then we'll win the game in grand fashion. Hitting one of our lesser damage dorks will knock a player out of the game for four mana. In a pinch, we can also use the Hellion for spot removing an opponent's creature.</p>
<p>Switching gears, it wouldn't be a Warlock deck without a few <a href="https://edhrec.com/themes/curses">Curses</a>. Fortunately, we're in the right colors for some good ones. I've kept it low to the ground as we're playing Mardu and shouldn't get too carried away with CMC.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Curse of Opulence" href="#" target="_blank">Curse of Opulence</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Curse of Disturbance" href="#" target="_blank">Curse of Disturbance</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are good political pieces that reward us for attacking each turn, which Zurgo will be doing anyways. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Curse of Bloodletting" href="#" target="_blank">Curse of Bloodletting</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can accelerate the game clock quickly, especially if we drop it on someone's end step after killing our own <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Academy Rector" href="#" target="_blank">Academy Rector</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with an instant-speed wrath. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dictate of the Twin Gods" href="#" target="_blank">Dictate of the Twin Gods</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can do the same for the whole table.</p>
<p>Add some fruits, vegetables, and a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sunforger" href="#" target="_blank">Sunforger</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> package, and our mad Orc-lock's deck looks something like this:</p>

<h2>Light at the End of the Tunnel</h2>
<p>We crawl through the lair in a blind rage, blasting any Orc who crosses our path. We reach the surface and let out a triumphant roar. Those who deemed us unworthy cower in fear before we send them to their doom with power drawn from their ancient enemies' fey guardian.</p>

<h1>Bringing Them Down to Our Level</h1>
<p>Greetings, everyone, and welcome back to <em>Monomania</em>. In this article series we build mono-colored decks as a way to explore ramp and draw packages that are synergistic with our particular deck’s strategy, challenging staples and misconceptions about the color pie. Today, we’re examining another way to make mono-white work in Commander. This time, we’re leaning into the color’s meanest tendencies.</p>

<p>The seemingly abject struggle of mono-white in EDH has been topical very recently within the Commander community. While white has been the weakest mono-color option for a long time, it seems that over the last year every color except white has received interesting commander options that are tuned to our format. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Urza, Lord High Artificer" href="#" target="_blank">Urza, Lord High Artificer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Syr Konrad, the Grim" href="#" target="_blank">Syr Konrad, the Grim</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded" href="#" target="_blank">Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gargos, Vicious Watcher" href="#" target="_blank">Gargos, Vicious Watcher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are all unique generals that can go toe-to-toe with powerful multi-color commanders. Sure, the new <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Heliod, Sun-Crowned" href="#" target="_blank">Heliod, Sun-Crowned</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has combo potential, but the mono-white options from the last year have all seemed bland and uninspired.</p>
<p>Personally, I enjoy playing mono-white, but I also recognize that there are only a handful of fun options for the command zone. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Teshar, Ancestor’s Apostle" href="#" target="_blank">Teshar, Ancestor’s Apostle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mangara of Corondor" href="#" target="_blank">Mangara of Corondor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> both gesture toward unique, powerful strategies that are flavorfully white, where <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Linden, the Steadfast Queen" href="#" target="_blank">Linden, the Steadfast Queen</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> does not.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hokori, Dust Drinker" href="#" target="_blank">Hokori, Dust Drinker</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> highlights another aspect of white that can be productive if built correctly. It won’t make you any friends, however.</p>

<p>Instead of putting itself ahead, white likes to bring others down. If you can’t draw cards, why not restrict how your opponents’ use their cards with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Eidolon of Rhetoric" href="#" target="_blank">Eidolon of Rhetoric</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rule of Law" href="#" target="_blank">Rule of Law</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>? If you can’t ramp, why not tax your opponents with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aura of Silence" href="#" target="_blank">Aura of Silence</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ghostly Prison" href="#" target="_blank">Ghostly Prison</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>?</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hokori, Dust Drinker" href="#" target="_blank">Hokori, Dust Drinker</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the embodiment of this area of white's wheelhouse. This is a stax commander, essentially a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Winter Orb" href="#" target="_blank">Winter Orb</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effect, and leads to a deck that aims to prevent your opponents from playing the game. As any good degenerate knows, there are ways to break the symmetry of this effect to give yourself a distinct advantage. In this deck, for example, we will rely heavily on artifact mana sources rather than lands. In fact, the lands in our deck are mostly for show. We’ll be bouncing them, sacrificing them, or pitching them to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Abolish" href="#" target="_blank">Abolish</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. This style of deck is extremely polarizing. I both don’t recommend building this sort of list and I don’t play it myself. With all that being said, let’s get into it and see how we’ll ruin everyone’s day.</p>

<h2>Surrogate Mana</h2>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hokori, Dust Drinker" href="#" target="_blank">Hokori, Dust Drinker</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is one of those commanders that requires an intensive ramp package. The major theme of this deck is breaking symmetry—playing so many mana rocks that the stax component of our strategy only minimally affects us.</p>

<p>We need white mana to cast most of our spells. For this reason, I’ve crammed as many white-producing mana rocks into this deck as I could possibly justify. Without white mana rocks, we might catch ourselves in the same situation as our opponents: with a hand full of uncastable cards. From <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Coldsteel Heart" href="#" target="_blank">Coldsteel Heart</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arcane Signet" href="#" target="_blank">Arcane Signet</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, I’ve included eleven mana rocks that can produce white mana.</p>

<p>On the other hand, we also need efficient mana rocks that can pump out a lot of colorless mana at a time. Because we’re only untapping one land a turn, we want to produce enough mana to continue on at a regular clip. This becomes even more important when our opponents will most likely point everything they have in our direction. Nobody likes the stax player. To combat the combined resources of three players, we need access to triple the amount of mana that they have access to.</p>

<h2>Fake Friends</h2>
<p>Because we’ll be choking our opponents on mana, chances are that they'll be unable to cast more than one spell a turn, if they can even cast one to begin with. As such, our draw package can also break the symmetry of the game in an interesting way. If we play symmetrical draw effects, we can hopefully strand unplayable cards in our opponents’ hands.</p>

<p>This style of effect is exactly what we need to keep the card advantage flowing. Group Hug staples become something much more sinister here. These cards give our opponents all of their toys but prohibit them from playing with them, many to be discarded at the end of turn. The goal of this deck is to be able to play these extra cards out of our hand faster than any opponent. That is our path to victory.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Truce"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Temporary Truce"></div></div>
<p>Finally, here are two symmetrical card advantage effects that few people have seen at a Commander pod. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Truce" href="#" target="_blank">Truce</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is being played in 219 decks, while <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Temporary Truce" href="#" target="_blank">Temporary Truce</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> only makes it into 66 lists. Looking through their EDHREC pages, they’re both seeing play exclusively with Group Hug commanders such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phelddagrif" href="#" target="_blank">Phelddagrif</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis" href="#" target="_blank">Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While I like Group Hug, I think these two cards are much better with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hokori, Dust Drinker" href="#" target="_blank">Hokori, Dust Drinker</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<h2>The Deck</h2>
<p>Now that we have the foundation set, let’s look at the rest of the deck. Again, I don’t advocate for building this deck. I’ve never had fun playing or playing against stax. But, if you want to be mean, and the group you know will let you get away with it, maybe play around with this commander. As always, season to taste.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Misers&#039; Cage"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Luminarch Ascension"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Winds of Abandon"></div></div>
<p>Among the other notable inclusions here we have a suite of effects that drain our opponents' life totals when we strand cards in their hand. If we have the game locked down, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Misers&#039; Cage" href="#" target="_blank">Misers&#039; Cage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Iron Maiden" href="#" target="_blank">Iron Maiden</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Viseling" href="#" target="_blank">Viseling</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can be win conditions over the course of a very long game. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Luminarch Ascension" href="#" target="_blank">Luminarch Ascension</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is probably my favorite win condition for white control decks—it's resilient, cheap, and puts a fast clock on the table.</p>
<p>Finally, I’ve included a few Hokori-specific removal spells such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Winds of Abandon" href="#" target="_blank">Winds of Abandon</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Settle the Wreckage" href="#" target="_blank">Settle the Wreckage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. With Hokori, the lands fetched by these two incredibly potent removal spells becomes almost nonexistent. Lands are irrelevant, so a four-mana mass exile effect is well above the curve. In addition, because of how we value lands, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lotus Field" href="#" target="_blank">Lotus Field</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lotus Vale" href="#" target="_blank">Lotus Vale</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Karoo" href="#" target="_blank">Karoo</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are some of the best cards in our deck. Because we only untap one land per turn, having that land be a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lotus Field" href="#" target="_blank">Lotus Field</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> maximizes our mana potential in a given turn.</p>

Today we'll be reviewing my picks for <i>Ravnica Allegiance, </i>which I'll always remember as that set I couldn't ever spell correctly. (Allegience? Alligiance? Alligience? Couldn't we just name it <em>Ravnica Pals</em>, or something?)</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Anyway, January 5, 2020 marked the one-year birthday of </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ravnica Allegiance, </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">so all of the following stats are pulled from that day.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> W</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">e’ll review where I went wrong, where I went right, and why. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">No surprises here. In fact, I picked Teysa to be my Can’t-Miss-Pick of the set. Here’s some analysis from last year’s article:</span></p>
<blockquote><p>Teysa Karlov is incredibly versatile, which is a common theme among many popular commanders. The first line of text supports an aristocrats-style deck (not unlike her pal, Judith), while her other ability supports either a swarm or go-big-with-tokens strategy. There’s also the option to do a little of both, or maybe even a token-based lifegain deck. Teysa can go in several directions, all of them good.</p></blockquote>
<p>After Teysa, there was only one other Over in this set—and I didn't get it. To quote The Dude, this is a bummer, man.</p>

<h2>The Easy Unders</h2>
<p>Let's start with a fish who's a motivational speaker. Check that: <em>Utopian </em>speaker.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite resembling a gungan gearing up for Halloween, Zegana checked in with a paltry 73 decks. I must say, I started pretty high on her.</span></p>
<blockquote><p>Zegana’s back, this time underwater. She’s also cheaper to cast, less mana-intensive, and potentially offers a bonus to your entire team. Is all that enough to get her over the 600 mark?</p></blockquote>
<p>The answer: nah.</p>
<blockquote><p>While Zegana, Utopian Speaker offers some novel functionality, she’s ultimately just another Simic +1/+1 counter commander in a field of other commanders who can do that strategy better...</p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Next up, this thing:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="The Haunt of Hightower"></div></div></span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Evidently unrelated to the Hightowers of Hightower, this skeleton-vampire-bat dude knows its fashion well, as noted in last year's article:</span></p>
<blockquote><p>[The Haunt of High Tower] is promising, not least of all because of its sweet scarf. Steve Tyler must be so jelly right now.</p></blockquote>
<p>Hard as it may be to believe, I threw in some actual analysis, too.</p>
<blockquote><p>The last line of rules text is really what’s got me intrigued, though. It doesn’t just trigger when stuff hits the bin from the hand. It’s from <i>anywhere. </i>That open-endedness is an important element of many popular commanders.</p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Haunt received help later in the year with </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Throne of Eldraine, </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">a set featuring fairly strong discard and mill themes; just check out all the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Syr Konrad, the Grim" href="#" target="_blank">Syr Konrad, the Grim</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>s and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rankle, Master of Pranks" href="#" target="_blank">Rankle, Master of Pranks</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in Haunt decks.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, the Haunt wasn't the only mono-black option printed in 2019. There was one in </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Modern Horizons</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">…</span></p>

<p>Haven't seen a father-son duo like this since Mike and Kyle Shanahan (by the way, my condolences, Niners fans).</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our final entry on this list…</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I had high hopes for this dude.</span></p>
<blockquote><p>Players love tribal. They especially love tinkering with tribes that haven’t gotten a lot of love. The newest version of Rakdos approaches this topic in a cool way. Basically, if you’re a member of his circus and/or a denizen of hell, he won’t kill you.</p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And I gotta say, his Arena animation was sick. Of course, there’s no EDH on Arena, so that matters little. I think I summed up the issue with Rakdos pretty well last year:</span></p>
<blockquote><p>Most players don’t like randomness. Remember when <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Okaun, Eye of Chaos" href="#" target="_blank">Okaun, Eye of Chaos</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom" href="#" target="_blank">Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> came out, and people were talking about how coin flipping was finally a legitimate EDH archetype? They’ve only got 179 decks on EDHREC, even after being out for over six months.</p></blockquote>
<p>If we liked randomness, we'd be playing some other game. Dungeon Dice Monsters, maybe?</p>

<h2>The Head Scratchers</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now onto arguably the biggest shocker of the set:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Judith, the Scourge Diva"></div></div></span></p>
<p>My prediction: <strong>Over</strong></p>
<p>Final deck count: 267</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the pantheon of famous Judiths, I thought the Scourge Diva would rank somewhere between Judge Judy and Judy Garland. Instead, she was about as culturally relevant to 2019 as Judy Jetson. What went wrong?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Honestly, I'm still baffled. I don’t think anything in my initial evaluation proved incorrect.</span></p>
<blockquote><p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" href="https://edhrec.com/commanders/judith-the-scourge-diva">Judith, the Scourge Diva</a></span> offers the best sacrifice effect we’ve ever seen on a Rakdos commander. Cards like this can usually only target players or plansewalkers. Judith targets <em>anything</em>.</p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My working theory is that other commanders entered the format around the same time and sucked up much of Judy’s share of the market. She’s mainly an aristocrats commander, and just check out some of the aristocrats commanders that appeared within her year:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Teysa Karlov"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Korvold, Fae-Cursed King"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Yawgmoth, Thran Physician"></div></div></span></p>
<p>This next one is head-scratching not because of how few decks it earned, but how many.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Lavinia, Azorius Renegade"></div></div></span></p>
<p>My prediction: <strong>Under</strong></p>
<p>Final deck count: 503</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For the record, I got the pick right. But I still don't understand how it got all the way to 500. Here's my initial take on the card:</span></p>
<blockquote><p>Lavinia is likely too annoying to see significant play.</p></blockquote>
<p>If I was feeling pithy I might've stopped there. But there was more!</p>
<blockquote><p>You may laugh, but check out the <a href="https://edhrec.com/themes/hatebears">Hatebear theme</a>. It has only 359 decks at the time of writing this article. To me, that suggests a style players don’t want to play with or against. Sorry, Lavinia. You have a cool name and cool artwork, but I think you’ll be better off elsewhere.</p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I stand by this assessment. I guess people enjoy You-Can't-Do-That Tribal more than I realized.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Anyway, I was hot on my picks until the Elf Ooze Wizard:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I’m still surprised this one didn’t make it to 600, though it did get close. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Birthing Pod" href="#" target="_blank">Birthing Pod</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> on a stick seems like a decent pitch for any commander, especially in Simic.</span></p>

<p>When it comes to the most famous evil computers, Skynet is right at the top of the list, probably only matched by HAL 9000 (but when it comes to body count, HAL falls a wee bit behind). Skynet's fame was derived primarily from its two big plays: nuking humanity, and sending Terminators back in time to kill Sarah/John Connor before John could grow up to defeat Skynet.</p>

<h2>Let's Do The Time Warp</h2>
<p>This strategy of "send a killing machine back in time to kill your enemies before they become a threat" should translate well into <em>Magic</em>. The most straightforward time manipulation mechanic is extra turns, but that's really more time <em>stretching </em>than time <em>travel, </em>and that's just not gonna cut it for us. How would we actually go about sending a dangerous creature "back in time"? That would probably mean sending it to the beginning of the game, but that's ridiculous; surely there isn't a card designed for such a specific purpose and intention?</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">There Is</h3>

<p>Well, would you look at that! Turns out <em>Magic</em> lore has its very own "robot built to screw with the past", with a design to back it up. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Karn Liberated" href="#" target="_blank">Karn Liberated</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s first two abilities are most often used on our opponents, but we can just as easily target ourselves with his first ability if we're looking to send back a very specific threat. And speaking of threats, we can't just send any old battlecruiser to deal with our enemies. No, we have to send...</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">The Terminator</h2>

<p>Robot? Check. Virtually unstoppable? Check. Deadly? CHECK. This deck will, of course, include a few alternative Terminators, but this is by far the best, both in terms of utility and flavor, so if we manage to ult <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Karn Liberated" href="#" target="_blank">Karn Liberated</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> after exiling <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blightsteel Colossus" href="#" target="_blank">Blightsteel Colossus</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with one of his +4 activations, we can hunt down our opponents without "pity, remorse, or fear." But how do we keep Karn alive for two turns after he comes out? If only we had more time. <p>I'm sure you've noticed the huge flavor win of this whole evil robot combo being <em>completely colorless.</em> As much as I would love to make the whole deck colorless, we'd be limiting our options too much. Plus, maybe we should pick a commander who can help us pay the exorbitant 21 mana that it would cost to pull off this combo in one turn.</p>

<h2>Commander - Kykar, Wind's Fury</h2>

<p>Jeskai will prove to be exactly the colors we need to implement our remaining Skynet schemes. Our final decklist will only run about 15 creatures, which means Kykar will be a big help for pulling off our crazy time travel shenanigans, which we do have a few different (expensive) ways to execute.</p>

<p>But don't the card names <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Apocalypse" href="#" target="_blank">Apocalypse</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Worldpurge" href="#" target="_blank">Worldpurge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> hint at another famous Skynet move?</p>

And since these cards say "destroy", we don't even have to flicker <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blightsteel Colossus" href="#" target="_blank">Blightsteel Colossus</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>!</p>
<p>On the subject of Blightsteel, let's introduce the rest of our arsenal:</p>

It's worth noting that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Evra, Halcyon Witness" href="#" target="_blank">Evra, Halcyon Witness</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> does need us to activate her ability before we lose all our lands, but we can mitigate the danger of being at 4 life by swinging with her immediately afterwards. We've also got some other options that aren't instantly lethal but are still dangerous.</p>

<h2 style="text-align: center;">T-1000</h2>

<p>The T-1000 is an icon of the Skynet arsenal, and there are a few artifact cards that represent its MO remarkably well. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Duplicant" href="#" target="_blank">Duplicant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mimic Vat" href="#" target="_blank">Mimic Vat</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> follow a similar strategy of killing and copying important targets, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phyrexian Metamorph" href="#" target="_blank">Phyrexian Metamorph</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a slap-bang dead ringer for our goopy pal.</p>
<p>Aside from their delicious flavor, these can help us survive the early game by copying the biggest threat.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Infiltration</h2>

Also, shout out to the guy in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aqueous Form" href="#" target="_blank">Aqueous Form</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for playin' it wiggly like the T-1000.</p>
<p>This also a good place to propose that we run <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Worldslayer" href="#" target="_blank">Worldslayer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, since these can all help pop it off.</p>
