<p>Hello and welcome. Today was going to be a deck tech on another <em>Spider-Man</em> commander option, but a video from the <em>Tolarian Community College</em> got my attention, and I'd like to take this opportunity to respond to it.</p>
<p>The one I'm referring to is "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nms5vaZ_4-k&amp;t=814s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">How I Feel About Magic: The Gathering's Marvel's Spider-Man The Expansion Set</a>," where The Professor (whom I have much respect for) discusses the soon-to-be released <em>Spider-Man</em> set, and its shortcomings.</p>
<p>I'd like to offer my views on it. However, I'll take this chance to say that, if you enjoy the set and the cards, continue to do so. I'm not going to ruin that for you, and neither should anyone else. But, it's important to stress that it could be so much more.</p>
<h2>What Is This? I Can’t Even</h2>

<p>I admit it; I was lukewarm about the <em>Spider-Man</em> set when it was first previewed. That said, I had a tab on it for a reason. Last year, I assembled two decks over the winter holidays, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Fourteenth Doctor" href="#" target="_blank">The Fourteenth Doctor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ezio Auditore da Firenze" href="#" target="_blank">Ezio Auditore da Firenze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. One was assembled from an advent calendar (with some singles outside of it), and the other because I enjoyed the deck.</p>
<p>I saw both the <em>Doctor Who</em> and <em>Assassin's Creed</em> sets as "Commander Kits" to assemble a certain (often) five-color option. In this light, I had one eye out for our headliner Spider-Man card to assemble a new five-color deck from the set (<em>Final Fantasy</em> is its own beast. You can see why in <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/beyond-the-multiverse-the-final-fantasy-sendoff" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this article with a large batch of decks I assembled</a>).</p>
<p>With the full spoiler now out, I can say that my suspicions were confirmed: The set was not to my liking, putting it lightly. Sure, there were a few cool cards in there, but the rest didn't resonate with me.</p>
<p>I tried to assemble the list, but the set needed outside help before it could stand on its legs, especially with the lands and ramp. This was an issue I had with my Ezio list...WAIT A MINUTE. Do I see a pattern? Eh, it's probably nothing.</p>
<p>All right, fine. I'll make another concession. A while ago, I listed <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/the-top-5-universes-beyond-set-releases-so-far" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the top five <em>Universes Beyond</em> releases</a>. In that article, I placed <em>Assassin's Creed </em>ahead of the <em>40K </em>precons. If I were writing that today, I'd switch the two around. But I still maintain that the lackluster mana bases (compared to the other UB precons) are what keep <em>40K</em> back. It's only now, with the <em>Spider-Man</em> set, that I see my folly.</p>
<p>Anyway, to make things worse, I wasn't really awestruck by <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cosmic Spider-Man" href="#" target="_blank">Cosmic Spider-Man</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Keyword soup, and giving other Spiders said soup, is nice, but it's not exactly flashy.</p>
<p>At this point, I suppose you're asking a question I'm about to get to: What does The Professor's latest video have to do with this?</p>
<h2>My Response</h2>

<p>In the video, The Professor stresses that this isn't a video about <em>Universes Beyond.</em> While I do agree, the comments told another story. And because of those comments, I found myself at such a low point that I wrote this article early like it was a therapy session (don't worry; I'm fine now).</p>
<p>His comparisons to the <em>Assassin's Creed</em> set were especially striking: Even though one was straight to Modern, they both followed an identical formula (Though, <em>Assassin's Creed </em>did it better). A part of the video that soured my views on the set, and now looking to take apart my Ezio deck soon.</p>
<p>As many viewers know, he isn't a fan of <em>Universes Beyond</em>, and I accept that (and not everyone liking it for that matter). My main gripe with the product line more has to do with recent decisions since <em>Foundations</em> released, but I digress.</p>
<p>A reason for The Professor's dislike of the <em>Spider-Man </em>set is that it fails to translate well from the original IP to the cards themselves. One thing I loved about UB sets is that each card tells a story, and tells me about a character. I research it online, and poof, there it is. <em>Spider-Man</em> did not have that. Thus, I frankly agree with The Professor here.</p>
<p>Another big reason for the dislike of the <em>Spider-Man</em> set is something we both agree on: the immersion breaking. Sure, we've had detectives and race cards, but this set went extreme. Hot dogs, taxis, cell phones, etc.</p>
<p>Oh, and by the way, your <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rent Is Due" href="#" target="_blank">Rent Is Due</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Gotta pay up!</p>
<p>Not to mention this all takes place in a fantasy land known as New York City *cue dinosaur screeching overhead* (My favorite part of the video).</p>
<h2>Further Points</h2>

<p>In that same vein, The Professor pointed out that it wasn't a big leap to reach this point. In recent years, we've had everyone dress up as Sherlock Holmes in <em>Murders at</em> <em>Markov </em>(I mean <em>Karlov</em>)<em> Manor. </em>Cowboys in <em>Outlaws of Thunder Junction</em>, and '80s horror with <em>Duskmourn</em>. And don't get me started on <em>Aetherdrift</em>.</p>
<p>It took these baby steps to reach what we see here with the <em>Spider-Man </em>set. And that has been spilling over into in-universe sets, which does torture my boomer heart a bit.</p>
<p>The Professor also touches on the small set size, especially when a considerable portion of it are all Spider-Men (-Women, and -Everything else). Considering the decades worth of content, plus a small set size, it's easy to conclude that the set was trying to do too much with so little space.</p>
<p>I'm also not seeing the flavor on the cards, like I implied above. It's just not there like it was with other UB releases. I'm not a comic book person, so take this with a grain of salt.</p>
<h2>What Could Be Improved?</h2>

<p>Like I said in the introduction, the set could've been so much more. Its rushed production certainly didn't help it. As Mark Rosewater <a href="https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/790085318829277184/i-would-appreciate-you-not-lying-to-ign-about-why" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed</a>, the <em>Spider-Man</em> set was to be a small release, akin to <em>Assassin's Creed</em>, but the initial reactions to that release gave off the red flags necessary for the change.</p>
<p>Secondly, speaking of rushing, it would've been great for the releases for be more spread out, so each one can breathe. This also would have the result of the set being better handled, and the set would be bigger to accommodate more stuff, too. This point has been uttered to death, so I won't feed it beyond that.</p>
<p>There's also the massive wrinkle with the digital rights, but again, this point is outspoken, but also irrelevant to the Commander side of things.</p>
<p>We know there's going to be future <em>Marvel</em> set releases, so the best way to salvage this situation is to not rush the set. Let it sit and breathe, so it can be better enjoyed by everyone. And, of course, make the sets bigger.</p>
<h2>Moving Forward</h2>
<p>I maintain that, for a lot of the reasons The Professor has said, the newly minted <em>Spider-Man</em> set does not shine brightly. However, if someone enjoys the set and wants to play with the cards, I won't stop them. One person's trash is another's treasure.</p>
<p>In addition, I also take a stand, and say that <em>Universes Beyond </em>doesn't deserve all the hate it does. Both <em>The Lord of the Rings </em>and <em>Final Fantasy</em> sets (the latter I wrote a love letter for a few weeks back, the same letter with all those decks) stand among the best sets released in the product line. Those two, among others, show UB at its best.</p>
<p><a href="https://bsky.app/profile/edhrec.com/post/3lxajold4o626" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A recent poll</a> rating the worst sets in all of <em>Magic</em> listed as "All UB Sets" being second only to <em>Aetherdrift</em>. A poll I can't take seriously (largely because the <em>Spider-Man</em> set had only a few cards to its name at the time, among other reasons). Like I said, the contempt is unwarranted, though I make a few concessions.</p>
<p>All of this stuff had been in my mind since I began writing here. It was only now that I made the call to write this piece. Come back next time when we visit <em>Spider-Man</em>...from a different part of the Spider-verse.</p>

My Response to The Professor's Spider-Man Video

<p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/@TolarianCommunityCollege" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tolarian Community College</a>, the most-watched <em>Magic</em> content channel on YouTube, is teaming up with <a href="https://archidekt.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Archidekt</a>, the best deckbuilding site on the web! With their powers combined, they're giving many <em>Magic</em> players the chance to win one of two <em>Marvel's Spider-Man</em> Collector Booster Boxes!</p>
<p>We have all the information on how to enter this "Amazing" contest down below.</p>
<h2>The Premise Behind the Contest</h2>
<p>The Professor, the creator behind Tolarian Community College, recently published <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C5GBPvhGKU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a YouTube video</a> lamenting the distinct lack of preconstructed Commander decks for <em>Marvel's Spider-Man</em>.</p>
<p>So, rather than sitting and doing nothing about it, he took matters into his own capable hands. He created three viable precons for the set!</p>

<h1>Welcome! Let's Talk About How to #FABDad!</h1>
<p>My name is Donnie! I’m a 36-year-old #FABDad who started playing trading card games before I started puberty, waaay back when <em>Pokémon</em> was the newest sensation on the playground. As I got older, I switched to <em>Yu-gi-oh</em> after watching the anime back when it first debuted here in the US, and then eventually found my way to <em>Magic the Gathering</em>, a passion for which kept me and my little brother close as we grew up.</p>
<p>I found <em>Flesh and Blood</em> in December of ’22, after hearing rumblings about a world championship finishing up and a thriving competitive scene, which my brother and I were looking for as Magic just wasn’t hitting the same for us as it had in years past. After buying two pre-constructed Blitz decks so we could learn the game together and after attending our first tiny Armory, we sold out of Magic completely to reinvest everything into FAB. Since then, I’ve been recklessly consuming every bit of FAB based media I can get my grubby hands on in an attempt to level up my game and do well on the tournament scene. So far, that’s meant finishing with a positive win record at my second PQ, finishing with a positive record at my first pre-release, winning a couple of Armories, breaking even on wins/losses at BH Charlotte on <a href="https://spellvoid.com/card/UPR044/fai-rising-rebellion">Fai, Rising Rebellion</a>, and barely missing day two at the calling in Baltimore with a 5-3 record playing <a href="https://spellvoid.com/card/OUT045/katsu-the-wanderer">Katsu, the Wanderer</a>. (Impressive resume, I know, I know….)</p>

<h2>Ok, So That's Who I Am, But Why Are <em>You</em> Here?</h2>
<p>Well, the reason you're here right now is probably because you’re like me and stay busy all the time due to real-life commitments that require real, actual, responsible adulting, and that often gets in the way of your passion for all things <em>Flesh and Blood</em>. Life is crazy and this game is tough to master, often requiring dozens into hundreds of games on a hero to truly understand every nuance of what they want to do in a match. That’s a daunting realization for someone who might only have time for one Armory a week if they’re lucky. So the question I’m hoping to explore, and, at best, help answer for us both over the course of this series is this:</p>
<p><em>How does one get better at </em>Flesh and Blood<em> while maintaining real-life responsibilities?</em></p>
<p>What we’re going to discuss here are topics that I’m not prepared to claim mastery over yet myself. Honestly, I’m just an enthusiastic nerd who happens to be a good employee, a happily married husband of 15-ish years, and a doting father of two beautiful pre-teens, that wants to talk about some of the things I’ve done over my gaming life to ensure I have personal time to spend on my collectible hobbies, and how I’ve been working on my own FAB journey. Things like how to explain the hobby to a non-gamer spouse, understanding and setting FAB goals, feeling like part of the community, etc.</p>
<p>Today though, we’ll cover just one of the things I’ve done to try to make myself better at FAB quickly:</p>
<h2>Consume Content at Every Opportunity!</h2>
<p><em>Flesh and Blood</em> content seems to be growing by leaps and bounds lately as more and more players come to the game and see an opportunity to grow a media space for themselves as the game grows around them. There are dozens of podcasts and YouTube channels that are dedicated entirely to FAB and it seems like all of the creators are genuinely passionate about both helping the community grow and the individuals grow within the community. This is a lucky break for me, since I’ve found myself in a position with my employer that allows me to wear earbuds to listen to media while I’m doing my physical tasks in order to help keep my mind occupied.</p>
<h3>Pods Vs Videos?</h3>
<p>Podcasts are especially awesome while moving around since there’s no fees involved in listening, unless you happen to have a premium account for your listening service of choice. I’ve followed the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@m-n-rcast">M-n-R Cast</a> with Michael Hamilton and Roger Bodee, for example, since December when I was told about it at my first Armory. If you’re brand new to FAB and don’t recognize the names, Michael Hamilton is both the reigning US National Champion and the current reigning World Champion for <em>Flesh and Blood</em>. He and his best friend Roger do their weekly podcast and discuss all manner of things related to FAB. Roger pokes fun at Michael a lot and it’s always both entertaining and thought provoking, so I highly recommend their content.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/@ArsenalPass">Arsenal Pass</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@983Media">983 Media</a>’s Instant Speed Podcast are also fantastic and easy to listen to while I’m moving around at work or playing over the Bluetooth connection in my car on my daily commute. Matt Di Marco, aka “Flake,” of Instant Speed is hilarious, and when I met him at the Battle Hardened in Charlotte, NC he was extremely humble and very down to earth. His podcast focuses a lot on interviews with FAB celebrities like Brodie Spurlock, Michael Hamilton, Daniel Rutkowski, and others where he brings them in to discuss recent tournament experiences, how they prepped, and other elements of playing FAB at a high level. Hayden Dale and Brendan Patrick of Arsenal Pass do roughly the same, but most of their casts seem to be them discussing the game between the themselves and occasionally inviting other high-level players on to chat.</p>
<h3>Videos for Me!</h3>
<p>Pods are, indeed, a wonderful font of brain fuel, but I’ve found YouTube to be an even more incredible resource from my first moments of wondering, “<em>What in the world is this game all about??</em>” I first learned how to play the game by watching The Professor of Tolarian Community College’s "<a href="https://youtu.be/3KFP_ESRz54">How To Play Flesh And Blood (TCG) Learn To Play In Less Than 15 minutes!</a>" video before I ever walked into a hobby shop for an Armory. Dice Commando’s video, "<a href="https://youtu.be/_11WAsqwzJ8">Top 5 Heroes to Start Out &amp; Grow With - into 2023</a>," helped guide me towards building my first Classic Constructed hero. Recently, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@ManSantFaB">ManSant</a> has been the go-to source for live event coverage and the quality of his streams just keeps getting better the more he does it. I’ve loved how knowledgeable he and his fellow commentators have been while streaming and how easy it’s been to follow along with the high-level plays thanks to his team.</p>

<p>I’m especially blessed in my local community to have several of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@TheCardGuyz">The Card Guyz</a> as local players that have been helping me both in person and with their awesome videos covering meta game breakdowns, tier charts, and detailed evaluations of the tournament scene. Nathan Crawford of The Card Guyz has been steadily streaming every Wednesday night and the way he talks through his lines while playing makes him very easy to listen to, even if I’m not able to sit and focus on the video feed.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/@TCGTALKYT">TCG TALK</a> put out a video that can be found <a href="https://youtu.be/faPXxm0ajtc">here</a>, with a link that lists dozens and dozens of other creators from a plethora of sources, making it a one-stop shop to find any type of content for our favorite TCG. He even breaks down the most frequent style of content for each creator and has them organized into categories!</p>
<p>These are just a <em>few</em> of the creators I follow regularly.</p>

<p>I know listening to other people talk about the game or watching other people play is not a perfect substitute for getting actual reps in with your favorite hero at the local shop, but when you’re wanting to get better at <em>Flesh and Blood</em> quickly, every moment of effort counts!</p>
