<p>Friendly greetings and welcome to a Bracket 2 deck tech for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Zuko, Exiled Prince" href="#" target="_blank">Zuko, Exiled Prince</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> from <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/tla" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Avatar: The Last Airbender</em></a>. In the words of Uncle Iroh, "It's time for you to look inward and start asking yourself the big questions. Who are you? And what do you want?"</p>
<p>I'm John Sherwood, and I want to build a combat trick deck. The new firebending mechanic is perfect for casting instants and paying activation costs in the best phase of the turn.</p>
<h2>Firing Back From Exile</h2>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Zuko, Exiled Prince" href="#" target="_blank">Zuko, Exiled Prince</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is perfect for Core (Bracket 2). For starters, at four power for four mana, Zuko is playing "fair and balanced" <em>Magic</em>.</p>
<p>Zuko's two abilities support each other, making him a self-contained engine for players who like to turn their commanders sidewise. His abilities enable each other, which frees up space in the deck for more payoffs.</p>
<p>In return for declaring Zuko as an attacker, he produces <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span><span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span><span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>. Firebending 3 is enough to cast 75% of red instant spells. If there's no spells available to cast, then that mana can be used for activated abilities, including Zuko's own ability to pay <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-3" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> for an impulse draw.</p>

<p>Zuko, Exiled Prince is an easy flavor win for the design team. <em>Magic</em>'s take on firebending embraces the proactive nature of the Fire Nation. Meanwhile, Zuko's activated ability showcases his tenacity and improvisation. The play from exile effect may be overplaying the bit, but I'm here for it.</p>
<p>Very few characters could be more red than Zuko before his redemption arc. Hot-tempered, impulsive, and aggressive, the Zuko of <em>Book One: Water</em> is portrayed perfectly on this card. As much as possible, I included flavor-forward cards in the list.</p>
<h2>Firebending Basics</h2>

<p>Primarily, quantity and time are the two firebending constraints the deck has to work around. Netting three mana for attacking is nice, but it's easy come, easy go. That mana must be used during combat.</p>
<p>These factors prescribe the most important card choices for a firebending focus. Zuko needs spells and abilities without sorcery timing restrictions.</p>
<p>Additionally, many opponents will have blockers by the time Zuko is ready to attack. The 99 must include cards that help Zuko bypass or remove those pesky blocking creatures. The best options either buff Zuko directly, or aid Zuko indirectly by removing blockers.</p>
<p>In two words: combat tricks.</p>

<p>Again, there are over 400 red instants for three mana or less. Thirty-one made the final cut for the list, and most of these are either pump effects, evasion, or removal. Another four cards provide an instant combat trick via Adventures.</p>
<p>Sixteen of the instant spells are mana value two, another ten are mana value one, and can therefore be paired in different ways to multi-spell with Zuko's trigger. Also, nine of the chosen instants come with the added benefit of scrying, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kindled Heroism" href="#" target="_blank">Kindled Heroism</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>With so many existing fire references in red, it's easy to find flavorful cards for a Zuko deck. However, not all flavor picks are created equal. My favorite combat trick in the deck is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fists of Flame|CMM|223" href="#" target="_blank">Fists of Flame</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. From top to bottom, this card could simply be reskinned for Zuko. The card name calls out some of Zuko's signature moves, and the art might as well be a firebender.</p>

<h2>A Swordsman and a Bender</h2>
<p>For additional fast casting, there's six permanents with flash. Five of these are Equipment that attach when they enter. To be fair, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Quick-Draw Dagger" href="#" target="_blank">Quick-Draw Dagger</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> isn't winning any games, but it's my homage to Zuko's pearl Earth Kingdom dagger. Hopefully the <em>Avatar</em> set gives us Zuko's dagger on a card, but this one is fine as a substitute.</p>
<p>The heater in this category is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Embercleave" href="#" target="_blank">Embercleave</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. With Embercleave's cost reduction and just two other attackers, Zuko produces enough mana to cast the sword and threaten an opponent with ten commander damage.</p>

<p>Next come the activated abilities. Zuko is a firebender; he can literally exhale fire. So here's four fire breathing enchantments:</p>

<li><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ghitu Firebreathing" href="#" target="_blank">Ghitu Firebreathing</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></li>
</ul>
<p>As long as one of these is in play, there's an easy outlet to turn Zuko's mana into damage. Truthfully, there are more enchantments like these in the available card pool. However, these made the cut because they protect the investment. Red's recursion doesn't cover enchantments. Each of the chosen enchantments has a mechanism to get it back in hand.</p>

<p>My favorite mana sink in this deck is much more subtle than firebreathing. This enchantment can turn combat on its head. It's one part politics, one part tax, and one part evasion. It's <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="War Cadence" href="#" target="_blank">War Cadence</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>Politically, this card is a tool to manipulate your opponents into attacking each other. As a tax, it pressures vulnerable players to choose between holding up mana to block, or playing out their own hands. Finally, against any opponent that can't pay the tax, War Cadence guarantees creatures hit players.</p>
<p>Often, mono-red decks struggle to use War Cadence effectively. The card is very mana intensive, which is why it'll always perform in a Zuko deck. Zuko provides the mana to use War Cadence offensively, saving mana from other source for other uses.</p>
<h2><em>"Break His Root" </em>- Iroh</h2>
<p>Let's talk about <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fog" href="#" target="_blank">Fog</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I love playing Fog effects in other colors. Fogs are underplayed in Commander, unless I'm the aggro player. When I play red aggro, I enjoy anti-Fog. The words "damage can't be prevented" are music to a red mage's ears.</p>
<p>Not only is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Call In a Professional" href="#" target="_blank">Call In a Professional</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> an anti-Fog, it puts in extra work by disallowing lifegain and burning a target. This card is a multitool, with the potential to be a finisher.</p>
<p>This is also one of my flavor picks. The name of the card reminds me of a couple mercenary moments in <em>Avatar</em>'s first season. One, when Zuko hires the bounty hunter June to track the Katara's scent with her shirshu mount. The other when Admiral Zhao hires pirates to blow up Zuko's ship.</p>

<p>There are two facts every combat deck must come to terms with in Commander. First is the higher, combined life totals of the opponents. Three opponents with a combined 120 life is a lot for a creature with four base power. Second is the parity of combat steps. This deck will win by breaking that parity to overcome the disproportionate distribution of life points.</p>
<p>One way to do this is extra combats. There are six extra combat creatures in the deck - not enough for a dedicated extra combat theme, but enough to make regular appearances.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Balduvian Rage" href="#" target="_blank">Balduvian Rage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is another solid finisher. With Zuko's mana alone, it's just +2/0. That's fine in the early game. In the late game, with more resources available, this card can eliminate a player.</p>

<p>In general, this deck is going to win one attack step at a time. It'll be vulnerable to many of the free value engines that run rampant through the format, but that's ok. The theme still matters in Bracket 2.</p>
<p>While it isn't a true Voltron strategy, I feel this deck is too focused on eliminating players to honestly belong in Bracket 1.</p>

<h2><em>"I rise with the sun." </em>- Zuko</h2>
<p>The sun is rising on a set I've been waiting for since the dawn of the Universes Beyond era. At the time of this writing, the <em>Avatar</em> preview stream is tomorrow, and I'm riding a wave of hype. I'm really looking forward to seeing new cards that could improve this list.</p>
<p>Since firebending is a main set mechanic, Zuko is sure to get more support from <em>Magic</em> than he got from most of the Fire Nation. More than anything, this deck needs a mono-red version of Uncle Iroh.</p>
<p>From a gameplay standpoint, this deck will slot neatly into the <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/commander-philosophy-the-brackets-have-updated-do-these-changes-help" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recently updated guidelines</a> for Bracket 2. There's no <a href="https://edhrec.com/top/game-changers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Game Changers</a>, and the incremental game plan will certainly take at least eight turns to execute.</p>

<p>Happy Halloween! It's Friday, October 31st, and it's time for a new <em>Avatar: The Last Airbender</em> preview card recap article. This article will look over cards from Thursday, October 30th. Many of the cards from yesterday were <em>Avatar Eternal</em> cards, but there were a great deal of cards from the main set as well. What were these cards? Read on, and we'll show you!</p>
<h2><em>Avatar: The Last Airbender</em> Previewers</h2>

Avatar: The Last Airbender Preview Recap From October 30th

<p>Friendly greetings and welcome to a <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/edhrec-guide-to-commander-brackets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bracket 2</a> deck tech for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Master Piandao|TLA|28" href="#" target="_blank">Master Piandao</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I'm John Sherwood, and <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/tla" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Avatar: The Last Airbender</em></a> is my Universes Beyond dream come true.</p>
<p>Master Piandao is more than my favorite supporting character from the show; he's one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. This deck started as an Exhibition (Bracket 1) tribute to <a href="https://avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Sokka%27s_Master" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sokka's Master</a>, and grew into a more cohesive and intentional Bracket 2 concept.</p>
<h2>Let's Find Out Together</h2>
<p>In Master Piandao's first scene, he evaluates Sokka's potential as a student. After a brief exchange, he declares, "Let's find out together how worthy you are." Now we're going to find out together how worthy <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Master Piandao|TLA|28" href="#" target="_blank">Master Piandao</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is to lead a Commander deck.</p>

<p>Master Piandao's triggered ability is an absolute flavor win. Attacking with Piandao triggers a four-card dig into the library for one of three card subtypes: Ally, Equipment, or Lesson.</p>
<p>First, Ally makes perfect sense for Piandao's focal creature type. Master Piandao belongs to The Order of the White Lotus. In his own words, "...a group that transcends the divisions of the four nations."</p>
<p>Second, Equipment is on point because Piandao is a master swordsman and sword maker. Third, Lessons are a great mechanical representation for Piandao's role as a teacher.</p>
<p>So the flavor checks out, but where does that leave the card mechanically? The combination of those three particular subtypes into one triggered ability makes Master Piandao totally unique as a <em>Magic</em> card. Meanwhile, he changes the math on first strike. First strike creatures make better blockers, and yet, Piandao offers a card advantage payoff for attacking.</p>
<p>Very few white commanders net card advantage, and even fewer do so during the combat phase. All together, this is a novel design with straightforward lines of play.</p>
<h2>A Variety of Cards</h2>
<p>Master Piandao says, "The warrior practices a variety of arts to keep his mind sharp and fluid." Applying this methodology to the deck, I included a mix of Allies, Equipment, and Lessons. The commander's ability is prescriptive in that regard, and it complements Piandao's multidisciplinary philosophy.</p>
<p>Diversifying the 99 into multiple card types runs a risk of the deck trying to do too many things. The trick to avoiding that pitfall is balancing the number of each card type for the deck to function reliably.</p>
<p>Ideally, this gets easier with Piandao digging five cards deep for options every time he attacks.</p>
<h3>Allies</h3>
<p>Piandao, as a member of the White Lotus, is one of the good guys. Three different versions of Aang are great Ally creatures for Master Piandao as a commander. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aang, the Last Airbender" href="#" target="_blank">Aang, the Last Airbender</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aang, Airbending Master" href="#" target="_blank">Aang, Airbending Master</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can use the airbending keyword ability to recur enter the battlefield effects, which are plentiful among Allies.</p>
<p>Also, Aang, Air Nomad grants vigilance, which pairs nicely with Piandao's first strike.</p>

<h3>Equipment</h3>
<p>While white provides an abundance of Equipment support, I opted against optimum Equipment choices. "The sword is a simple tool..." according to Piandao. With that in mind, I selected simple swords.</p>
<p>It would be easy enough to upgrade this list with the Swords of <em>X </em>and Y, but the thematic point is to emphasize Piandao's minimalist approach to combat. Hence vanilla sword selections like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bronze Sword" href="#" target="_blank">Bronze Sword</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Short Sword" href="#" target="_blank">Short Sword</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@HerosBladeVibeCheck" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hero's Blade Vibe Check</a> for this deck is a resounding yes. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hero&#039;s Blade" href="#" target="_blank">Hero&#039;s Blade</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is an ideal play on early turns before casting Master Piandao.</p>
<h3>Lessons</h3>
<p>The Lesson subtype first appeared in <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/stx" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Strixhaven: School of Mages</em></a> (<em>STX</em>). These spells see very little play in Commander. The most popular is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Introduction to Annihilation" href="#" target="_blank">Introduction to Annihilation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and it appears in less than 1% of decks. Still, there's very little opportunity cost for including spells like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Expanded Anatomy" href="#" target="_blank">Expanded Anatomy</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Introduction to Prophecy" href="#" target="_blank">Introduction to Prophecy</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> when the Commander enables card selection.</p>
<p><em>Avatar: The Last Airbender</em> is bringing new Lesson cards to <em>Magic</em>. Unfortunately, the set isn't fully previewed yet, and we don't know if any of the new Lessons will feature Piandao. So far, only two of the previewed Lessons fit in mono-white: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aang&#039;s Journey" href="#" target="_blank">Aang&#039;s Journey</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Airbending Lesson" href="#" target="_blank">Airbending Lesson</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<h2>Rock Gardening</h2>
<p>Tempo is very important to this list. White needs to regulate the pace of the game, or as Piandao would say, "Rock gardening teaches the warrior to manipulate his surroundings and use them to his advantage." This deck will use cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Authority of the Consuls" href="#" target="_blank">Authority of the Consuls</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Windborn Muse" href="#" target="_blank">Windborn Muse</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to manipulate the pod until Master Piandao is ready to strike.</p>

<p>Eventually this deck is going to win through combat damage, but it's too slow to call it aggro. The deck is designed to leverage incremental advantages from Ally typal synergy into a meaningful combat threat. By the time Piandao stamps his identity on the battlefield, there should be some other Allies ready to buff him up.</p>
<p>From that point on, Master Piandao's attack triggers help fuel the deck through to the end game.</p>
<h2>Special Material</h2>
<p>This deck is full of choices that reflect important moments from the story, or aspects of Piandao's character. The focal character of the episode is Sokka, who seeks to train with the master. Representing that untrained and uncertain version of Sokka, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sokka, Wolf Cove&#039;s Protector" href="#" target="_blank">Sokka, Wolf Cove&#039;s Protector</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Duelist&#039;s Heritage" href="#" target="_blank">Duelist&#039;s Heritage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is an excellent representation of Master Piandao's role in teaching Sokka to fight. Piandao quite literally passes a wealth of generational knowledge on to Sokka. In turn, Sokka becomes a much more effective strategist and combatant. Mechanically, granting the right creature double strike often redefines combat.</p>

<p>It's also noteworthy that Duelist's Heritage can be used pragmatically on other players' creatures, much the same way that Piandao knowingly teaches swordsmanship to an enemy of the Fire Nation.</p>
<p>The episode begins with Team Avatar's benders extinguishing a wildfire ignited by a meteor impact. When Piandao endeavors to help Sokka make his own sword, they use that space earth to, "...make a sword unlike any other in the world." I'm sure Sokka's space sword will be featured on a card, but it hasn't been revealed at the time of this writing. At least we have a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Meteorite" href="#" target="_blank">Meteorite</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for the raw material.</p>
<p>Forging the space sword showcases Piandao's mastery as a smith. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blacksmith&#039;s Skill" href="#" target="_blank">Blacksmith&#039;s Skill</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a story reference and efficient interaction in one package.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Resolute Strike" href="#" target="_blank">Resolute Strike</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a handy combat trick that can give Master Piandao two quick buffs for the price of one. +2/+2 is good, cheating equip costs is better, and this card does both for one mana. The name of the card reminds me of another Piandao quote. When teaching Sokka calligraphy, Piando advises, "Remember, you cannot take back a stroke of the brush. or a stroke of the sword." Resolute Strike is also an instant, which is a card type white can't normally take back after casting.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Single Combat" href="#" target="_blank">Single Combat</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is my homage to Piandao and Sokka's duel at the end of the episode. The spell allows each player to choose their combatant, in the same way that Sokka makes the call to fight his own battle, without the help of his friends. It's also a great board wipe for any deck that relies on one creature consistently attacking.</p>

<h2>The Warrior in the Garden</h2>
<p>One of the many reasons I love the character Master Piandao is the relevance of a proverb attributed to a real samurai, Miyamoto Musashi: “It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener in a war.” Piandao characterizes this proverb's ideal by living in peace while constantly preparing for conflict.</p>
<p>I designed this deck to uphold the same principle. This deck would be right at home in the garden of Bracket 1, tending to the artistry of the game. However, the intent of the deck is to contend in Bracket 2, where the competition is focused more on mechanics than thematic elements.</p>
<p>I'm eagerly awaiting more spoilers for <em>Avatar: The Last Airbender. </em>I'm optimistic that decks like this one are only going to get better when the set releases later this year.</p>

Master Piandao Bracket 2 Commander Deck Tech

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We've seen a ton of new cards from <a href="https://edhrec.com/sets/tla" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Avatar: The Last Airbender</em></a> over the past few weeks, as tons of iconic characters from one of my favorite childhood shows come to life on <em>Magic</em> cardstock. I'm excited to do a deck tech focused on one of the coolest cards from this set so far: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bumi, Eclectic Earthbender" href="#" target="_blank">Bumi, Eclectic Earthbender</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Bumi, Eclectic Earthbender"></div></div></p>
<p>Bumi showcases one of the new mechanics from this set: earthbending. When he enters the battlefield we earthbend 1, meaning that we turn one of our lands into a 0/0 creature with a +1/+1 counter on it. That land also gains the ability to protect itself, coming back to the battlefield after dying once.</p>
<p>That's a pretty strong ability, and I'm really excited to see what other earthbending-related cards will pop up as more cards get revealed for the set! For now, though, there's just a few <em>Avatar</em> cards that are good enough to make the cut for this casual EDH list.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-3" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, Bumi is a 4/4 Human Noble Ally. When he enters the battlefield, we earthbend 1. And when he attacks, we get to put two +1/+1 counters on each land creature we control. That's a really cool combination of abilities, and one that lets us lean hard into some of <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>'s strongest traits.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There's a few commanders whose EDHREC pages I've drawn inspiration from today. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kamahl, Heart of Krosa" href="#" target="_blank">Kamahl, Heart of Krosa</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> also animates our lands, and provides a team-wide buff every combat. I'm also reminded of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor" href="#" target="_blank">Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, who animates lands and hands out +1/+1 counters just like Bumi!<br />

<p>But, this deck tech isn't about those cards, so let's get back to Bumi. As I mentioned, we'll be leaning into two of <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>'s biggest strengths: lands and +1/+1 counters. Our commander blends those two strategies together well, so we'll be sure to win with a wide board of land creatures suited up with tons of counters.</p>
<p>Let's see how we can build out this lean, mean, mono-green machine!</p>
<h2>Key Cards for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bumi, Eclectic Earthbender" href="#" target="_blank">Bumi, Eclectic Earthbender</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>
<p>In order to really take advantage of our commander's +1/+1 counter production, we've got to ensure that we've got a full board of land creatures. While Bumi does make one 0/0 land creature (with a +1/+1 counter on it) when he enters the battlefield, it's gonna take a lot more than that to win a Commander game.</p>
<p>One of my favorite land animation pieces is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Emergent Sequence" href="#" target="_blank">Emergent Sequence</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rampant Growth" href="#" target="_blank">Rampant Growth</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> variant that turns the basic we fetch into a creature. I'm quite surprised that this card isn't more popular in green decks that care about +1/+1 counters, so I'm especially excited to give it a shoutout here.</p>

<p>I've also got to talk about <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Earthbending Student" href="#" target="_blank">Earthbending Student</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, a new creature that animates a land and grants a relevant keyword to all of our animated friends. Vigilance is particularly sweet on our animated lands, as it means we can attack with them and still tap them for mana afterwards. To that end, I've included another way to give our land creatures vigilance: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Embodiment of Insight" href="#" target="_blank">Embodiment of Insight</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Lastly, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wrenn and Realmbreaker" href="#" target="_blank">Wrenn and Realmbreaker</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a nice way to recur our best permanents in the late game, while turning our lands into 3/3s along the way.</p>
<p>There's lots of other ways to turn our lands into creatures, from the super powerful <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nissa, Who Shakes the World" href="#" target="_blank">Nissa, Who Shakes the World</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to the game-ending <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Liege of the Tangle" href="#" target="_blank">Liege of the Tangle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to the extra-land-drop granting <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Druid Class" href="#" target="_blank">Druid Class</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. We've got no shortage of ways to animate our mana base!</p>

<p>Once we've converted our Forests into combat-ready creatures, we need some ways to turn those creatures into game-ending threats. Alongside the steady stream of +1/+1 counters handed out by Bumi, a +2/+2 anthem from <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sylvan Advocate" href="#" target="_blank">Sylvan Advocate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or a +1/+1 anthem from <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blossoming Tortoise" href="#" target="_blank">Blossoming Tortoise</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can prove extremely potent. Sylvan Advocate provides a really nice anthem for just two mana, and it's even an Ally.</p>
<p>I'm no finance expert, but I'd bet on this card rising in price as more earthbending and Ally kindred synergies crop up in this set.</p>
<p>Finally, if we can manage to maintain the monarchy through a full turn cycle, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Court of Garenbrig" href="#" target="_blank">Court of Garenbrig</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can turn our animated lands into victory quite quickly. We should have a board of relatively imposing blockers at all times, so that likely won't be too tall of a task.</p>

<p>One of the biggest drawbacks of land creatures is that they're more susceptible to removal. It's easy for an opponent to simply get rid of one of our creatures, which would also cut off our mana supply and make their removal super effective. So, aside from the recursion built into earthbending, we've got a few more ways to bring lands back from the graveyard.</p>
<p>The recently printed <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Icetill Explorer" href="#" target="_blank">Icetill Explorer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is one of the best <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crucible of Worlds" href="#" target="_blank">Crucible of Worlds</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effects in all of <em>Magic</em>, giving us an extra land drop and letting us dump more lands into the bin as the game goes on.</p>

<p>Combined with <em>Edge of Eternities</em>' <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Exploration Broodship" href="#" target="_blank">Exploration Broodship</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, this deck is full of brand-new cards that let us get our lands back. Exploration Broodship even lets us sacrifice a land that we've earthbent, which will allow that land to come back to the battlefield and re-trigger our <em>landfall</em> effects.</p>
<p>That's a relatively niche interaction, but it's still cool to see the interactions between the different card packages we've got in our 99.</p>
<h2>How Does This Bumi Deck Win?</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We'll usually win by attacking our opponents with progressively bigger land creatures, beating them down in longer games with our animated mana base. Our commander, combined with some +1/+1 counter synergies like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Duskshell Crawler" href="#" target="_blank">Duskshell Crawler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, will ensure that our main game plan is effective.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We'll be putting a lot of lands onto the battlefield. So, creatures with <em>landfall</em> abilities will be particularly good backup win conditions if we find ourselves unable to punch through with a few big lands. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scute Swarm" href="#" target="_blank">Scute Swarm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rampaging Baloths" href="#" target="_blank">Rampaging Baloths</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Avenger of Zendikar" href="#" target="_blank">Avenger of Zendikar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will all give us a sufficiently wide board to ensure we're in a strong position at every combat step. I've even included a few fetch lands, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shire Terrace" href="#" target="_blank">Shire Terrace</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Prismatic Vista" href="#" target="_blank">Prismatic Vista</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to beef up our Landfall strategy.</span></p>

<p>And, should we choose to go tall instead of wide, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bristly Bill, Spine Sower" href="#" target="_blank">Bristly Bill, Spine Sower</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will prove to be a great value play in the early game <em>and </em>a nice game-ender with his activated ability. Same goes for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scythecat Cub" href="#" target="_blank">Scythecat Cub</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, a two-drop that can provide a game-ending amount of counters.</p>
<p>We can even pump our excess mana into <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Waker of the Wilds" href="#" target="_blank">Waker of the Wilds</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kamahl, Fist of Krosa" href="#" target="_blank">Kamahl, Fist of Krosa</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to punch through clogged board states!</p>

<p>This deck sits pretty firmly in Bracket 2, which is where I think a five-mana commander like Bumi works best. This strategy is strong, but not necessarily strong enough to compete with what deckbuilders bring to the table for higher power games.</p>
