Hey everyone! Welcome back to Forgotten Harvest, where we spotlight heavily underplayed cards in the Commander format. This time we're looking at the series of Phantom cards from Judgment. But before getting further into that strategy, I need to come clean on something: I am a dirty, rotten liar.

As hinted at in the last <a href="https://articles.edhrec.com/forgotten-harvest-nefarox-enchantress/">Forgotten Harvest</a>, I'm sure many of you were expecting a mono-green deck focused on damage prevention. I built that deck, helmed by <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sekki, Seasons&#039; Guide" href="#" target="_blank">Sekki, Seasons&#039; Guide</a>, and then quickly realized that adding white would make it significantly better! What you'll be reading about here is the result of that change. I'm so terribly sorry, and hopefully we can put this behind us for the rest of the article.

<h2>In the Spirit of Truthfulness</h2>

I'll start with the heart of the deck: cards in the Phantom series from Judgment. This series of creatures have zero toughness, but all enter with a number of +1/+1 counters and have the ability "If damage would be dealt to this creature, prevent that damage. Remove a +1/+1 counter from this creature." <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phantom Nishoba" href="#" target="_blank">Phantom Nishoba</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phantom Nantuko" href="#" target="_blank">Phantom Nantuko</a> have both appeared in separate Commander products, but there are five other creatures in the series, along with a handful of creatures with similar abilities that are worth a look.
Less powerful than the two Phantoms already mentioned, this deck can still make good use of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phantom Flock" href="#" target="_blank">Phantom Flock</a> (112 decks), <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phantom Tiger" href="#" target="_blank">Phantom Tiger</a> (97 decks), <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phantom Centaur" href="#" target="_blank">Phantom Centaur</a> (129 decks), <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phantom Nomad" href="#" target="_blank">Phantom Nomad</a> (50 decks), and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Phantom Wurm" href="#" target="_blank">Phantom Wurm</a> (67 decks). Normally, these creatures would be fairly vanilla in an EDH deck. However, this build is going to focus on their damage prevention ability, making them the foundation of the deck's creature base. This is an ability ripe for abuse, and I'm shocked these cards don't see more play in Commander.

There's also a handful of other creatures not from the Phantom series that fit into the same strategy. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sekki, Seasons&#039; Guide" href="#" target="_blank">Sekki, Seasons&#039; Guide</a> deals in damage prevention and +1/+1 counters, but provides token production as well. From Dissension, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sprouting Phytohydra" href="#" target="_blank">Sprouting Phytohydra</a> doesn't have the prevention clause, but does replicate when dealt damage. Given some of the ways we're looking to abuse the Phantom ability, this will come in handy. And WotC must be aware of the powerful nature of this ability, as it's been fixed on more recently-printed cards. Case in point, War of the Spark's <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ugin&#039;s Conjurant" href="#" target="_blank">Ugin&#039;s Conjurant</a> and Battle for Zendikar's <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Undergrowth Champion" href="#" target="_blank">Undergrowth Champion</a> both have a nerfed version of this ability. Given the latter's 2/2 body and Landfall trigger, I've included it in the deck.

<h2>Embellishing the Story</h2>
Now that I have my all-star spirits laid out, I should get into how we're going to abuse the Phantom ability. From a careful reading, it's clear that these creatures don't require a +1/+1 counter be removed in order to prevent the damage. So, if I could get their toughness up to even a base value of one, I can score a damage-free army. And the best way to do that would be a commander with an anthem ability.

Enter <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Trostani Discordant" href="#" target="_blank">Trostani Discordant</a>. She'll make sure all our Phantoms survive, regardless of the waves of damage they take. Add to that the anthems themselves: <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Glorious Anthem" href="#" target="_blank">Glorious Anthem</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gaea&#039;s Anthem" href="#" target="_blank">Gaea&#039;s Anthem</a>. Not to mention the toughness-boosting powers of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spidersilk Armor" href="#" target="_blank">Spidersilk Armor</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Leyline of Vitality" href="#" target="_blank">Leyline of Vitality</a>. These effects are critical to keeping the Phantom team on the battlefield and in combat.
That's great and all, but what's to stop my opponents from overwhelming me with their own battalion?

<h2>The Truth Hurts for a Little While, But Lies Hurt Forever</h2>

Here we come to the reason I moved into white for this deck. Oddly enough, it was a green card that convinced me to go all-in on the Phantoms, and that card was <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cyclone" href="#" target="_blank">Cyclone</a>. When our team of creatures can't die, we can just keep pumping more and more green mana into the Cumulative Upkeep of this card, and pretty soon our Spirits are all that's left. And with it only appearing in 44 decks currently, this card could really use some more play! It's such a unique ability for green, potentially resulting in a board wipe if unchecked. Yes, there is the possibility of indestructible creatures to contend with, but <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bonds of Mortality" href="#" target="_blank">Bonds of Mortality</a> can help with that.
Once I found <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cyclone" href="#" target="_blank">Cyclone</a>, I expanded my search for green cards that damage. I also found <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Splintering Wind" href="#" target="_blank">Splintering Wind</a>, which I'll even admit is a terrible card, and sees play in only 16 decks on EDHREC. To be honest, I'm still testing out this enchantment to see how reliable it'll be. I like the idea of making a bunch of 1/1 fliers in green, and I like it even more when <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vigor" href="#" target="_blank">Vigor</a>'s on the battlefield. Heck, that's really the only reason this enchantment is still around: <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vigor" href="#" target="_blank">Vigor</a> makes it outstanding!
<a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hail Storm" href="#" target="_blank">Hail Storm</a> was another terrific find in green, and is currently in only 10 decks. It's a great taunt to only leave green mana open, and then spring this spell in combat when attacked. Few will see that coming! And while they're more well known than the cards I typically talk about, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wave of Reckoning" href="#" target="_blank">Wave of Reckoning</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lightmine Field" href="#" target="_blank">Lightmine Field</a> are some great damage sources in white that can be abused here.
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Hedron-Field Purists"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Candles&#039; Glow"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Protective Sphere"></div></div>
With all this damage flying around here, it would be a good idea to have some added protection. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hedron-Field Purists" href="#" target="_blank">Hedron-Field Purists</a> from Rise of the Eldrazi is an excellent form of that protection, helping to take the sting out of those Splinter tokens. And it's only seeing play in 290 decks at the moment. Operating as a second, far more limited <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vigor" href="#" target="_blank">Vigor</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Candles&#039; Glow" href="#" target="_blank">Candles&#039; Glow</a> (60 decks) can help protect some of the non-Phantom creatures in the deck, or help reload a waning spirit low on counters. From only 131 decks on EDHREC, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Protective Sphere" href="#" target="_blank">Protective Sphere</a> is an excellent way to minimize the hurt from a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cyclone" href="#" target="_blank">Cyclone</a> after several turns. I've also included some mana-makers in the deck to give the Sphere more versatility in holding off opponents' volleys (see <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chromatic Lantern" href="#" target="_blank">Chromatic Lantern</a> among others).

One final card I should mention is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Saltblast" href="#" target="_blank">Saltblast</a>. I know it's not on-theme like the rest of the cards I've discussed. But in the wake of War of the Spark, I'm beginning to prep my decks for the wave of people in my playgroup trying out all kinds of new 'walkers. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Saltblast" href="#" target="_blank">Saltblast</a> is some excellent white removal that can handle the nonwhite loyalty countered, as well as lands and all other types of problem permanents. It's a real shame it only sees play in 101 decks. Please help me get that number higher!

Forgotten Harvest - Phantasmic Beasts and When to Damage Them

<h1>We Did a Thing!</h1>
First, a note from Don, the founder of EDHREC:
<blockquote>A few months ago an EDHREC user, Greg Bateman, came up with an independent Chrome extension called <a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/better-edhrec/bifcpdpibocmmchlbdlfblelnefojbmk?hl=en">"Better EDHREC"</a> and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/EDH/comments/a0qgnh/better_edhrec_chrome_extension/">shared it on Reddit</a>. The extension allowed users to keep track of cards they are considering in a clipboard panel while browsing EDHREC. I loved this idea, so we hired Greg to come over and implement his extension as a permanent fixture of the website and make several improvements over his original idea. It's finally here, and it's something I'm personally really excited about!</blockquote>
And Don's not the only one! I'm chomping at the bit to take this new feature for a spin. Whether you're making a shopping list of cards you need for several decks, making comparisons between functionally similar cards to determine the best one to use, or brewing a Commander deck from scratch, this new clipboard function is a fantastic way to keep track of cards while using the site.
What better way to test it out than to make a new brew? If you're familiar with my article series <a href="https://articles.edhrec.com/author/kyle-keller/">Forgotten Harvest</a>, I typically focus on hyper-underplayed cards and get into some really weird synergies. Come on a journey with me while I use this new clipboard feature to build a new deck!

<h2>Populating the Clipboard</h2>
I really like Izzet commanders, and can never decide on just one, so how about a deck that plays all of them? If I'm making UR legends, I can just go to the <a href="https://edhrec.com/themes">Themes page</a> and find a UR commander under the <a href="https://edhrec.com/themes/legends">Legends Theme</a>.
What's that? There aren't any UR legendary creatures representing the Legends theme? Time to put the clipboard to use. When you hover over a card, a white [+] appears in the upper-right corner of the card image. Clicking on this [+] adds the card to your clipboard. You'll see a black box like this one pop up in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Meanwhile, the card image of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Locust God" href="#" target="_blank">The Locust God</a> has changed. It now features a white check mark, signifying that the card is on your clipboard.

I'll add some of my favorite legendary creatures, and then we'll take a look at my clipboard.

Here we can see quite a bit. I've got 12 creatures added to my clipboard from the <a href="https://edhrec.com/commanders/ur">Izzet Commanders</a> page. Clicking on each name brings up the card image on the right, the last card I clicked on being [[Nin, the Pain Artist]]. To remove a card from the clipboard, click on the red X for the desired line. To wipe the clipboard entirely in one fell swoop, use the 'Clear' button in the lower right corner. To link to a card's page from the clipboard, click the link icon in a given line (the icon to the left of the X).
We'll discuss the rest of the clipboard's functionality when I'm closer to having a completed deck. For now, it looks like the legendary creatures I added all have something in common: they're drawing cards! Time to hit up the <a href="https://edhrec.com/themes/wheels">Theme page for Wheel decks</a>, I guess, and add a bunch of those cards to my clipboard too!

Notice how, as I'm adding cards to this list, it's added more sections for the different card types (Instants, Sorceries, etc). Additionally, the values listed on the Card Kingdom and TCG Player buttons have gone up. These buttons can be used to shop for the deck on the respective sites! Looking for a budget-friendly boardwipe? You can throw some options into your clipboard, then shoot over to one of the sites and price them out. Want to figure out the price of a deck you're thinking of putting together? Use the links to those sites to find out! Plus, you'll be helping EDHREC in the process!

Now for one of the coolest parts about this feature: the Recs. Down at the bottom of the clipboard, EDHREC will help me with my deck by making some suggestions. How thoughtful! Based on the cards I've already added, it will make some recommendations about other cards that often see play with the things already in my list!
To add a recommendation, just click the green check mark next to the card. This will add it to the main list, and your Recs will begin recalculating.
Anyway, back to work. I wonder if the <a href="https://edhrec.com/commanders/ur#izzetstaples">Izzet Staples</a> page could help me round this out?

There! I've got the deck all set! (It may only say 83 cards in my clipboard, but don't forget that the basic lands each only count for one card.) I think I'm finally ready to make a decision on my commander for this UR legendary card draw machine. It's going to have to be <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain" href="#" target="_blank">Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain</a>.

I can flag her as my commander by clicking the yellow crown next to her name. This will separate out the commander into its own special section at the top of the clipboard, as seen above.
Now that I'm ready to export my deck, I'll select the 'Copy' button in the bottom right corner to copy the list. It's now paste-able into Notepad or the deck builder website of your choice (perhaps <a href="https://archidekt.com/">Archidekt</a>, given the <a href="https://articles.edhrec.com/archidekt-and-edhrec-announce-partnership/">article</a> earlier this week)!

<h2>Win. <del>Lose.</del> DRAW!</h2>
Alright, now that we've successfully used the new clipboard function on EDHREC, how about we talk a little about this deck? The point of this deck is to draw cards for extra benefits. We've got <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chasm Skulker" href="#" target="_blank">Chasm Skulker</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Psychosis Crawler" href="#" target="_blank">Psychosis Crawler</a> along with all their draw-trigger friends. A wide assortment of Niv-Mizzets both fuels the draw and slings some damage, and Jhoira will draw us cards every time we play one of these awesome Izzet powerhouses. There're oodles of ways to pull off a win: combat, burn, life loss, decking out our opposition, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Laboratory Maniac" href="#" target="_blank">Laboratory Maniac</a>... this should just be some fun, raw power at the table. Here you go!

<h1>Who Needs the Color Pie, Anyway?</h1>
Welcome back to Forgotten Harvest, where we give cards used in under 300 decks here on EDHREC their due. This time, I'm continuing the pattern of tackling mono-colored decks, and making good on a request from reader @WilliamLordSith for a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis" href="#" target="_blank">Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis</a> deck at the same time.
However, this isn't going to be your typical mono-black deck. No, we're going for something along the white/green persuasion. We're blowing away all expectations of what colors mean with an off-color enchantress deck.

Let's break it down into three sections:

<h2>What Nefarox and Black Do Well</h2>

There are two key features to Nefarox: Exalted and creature removal. Focusing on the former, black has a few cards that support keeping the creature count to a minimum. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Demonic Rising" href="#" target="_blank">Demonic Rising</a> (176 decks) and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Homicidal Seclusion" href="#" target="_blank">Homicidal Seclusion</a> (169 decks) are two enchantments that can help out when we're rocking a solo Nefarox, the former providing a nice 5/5 Demon, and the latter buffing our lone creature and gaining us back some life. Given the heavy enchantment theme planned for in this deck, these are quite powerful.
Of course, any black deck isn't complete without some creature removal. Nefarox's attack trigger is a great way to eliminate troublesome attackers on the other side of the table. This deck includes a typical removal package for black, including <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Damnation" href="#" target="_blank">Damnation</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Go For the Throat" href="#" target="_blank">Go For the Throat</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Profane Command" href="#" target="_blank">Profane Command</a>. If you decide to give this deck a try, I highly recommend customizing this portion before doing further deck editing. I'm admittedly relying on my favorites for removal, but tinkering is required to find the absolute best cards for the job. You may prefer <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Decree of Pain" href="#" target="_blank">Decree of Pain</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shriekmaw" href="#" target="_blank">Shriekmaw</a>, and that's totally fine.

<h2>Adding in Enchantments</h2>

It's safe to assume, with Nefarox at the helm, that opponents will be losing a lot of creatures. Therefore I looked to add Auras that would provide some extra pain when their creatures hit the bin. Cards like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chime of Night" href="#" target="_blank">Chime of Night</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dying Wail" href="#" target="_blank">Dying Wail</a> from Urza's Destiny both fit that criteria, and see play in 47 and 18 decks, respectively.
Similar to <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chime of Night" href="#" target="_blank">Chime of Night</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Funeral March" href="#" target="_blank">Funeral March</a> (30 decks) can help with a cascading creature loss. Speaking of cascades, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Screams from Within" href="#" target="_blank">Screams from Within</a> is king, frequently ripping through token decks like tissue paper, while only making it into the sleeves of 142 decks. When looking to cause some life loss, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Banewasp Affliction" href="#" target="_blank">Banewasp Affliction</a> (45 decks) gets the job done nicely. Finally, the highly political card <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Parallax Dementia" href="#" target="_blank">Parallax Dementia</a> can be a great bargaining chip when players A and B want to gang up on player C for a turn. This Nemesis common sees play in a whole 7 decks, which I think is far too low.
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Necromancer&#039;s Magemark"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Shade&#039;s Form"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Sadistic Glee"></div></div>
Not all of our Auras have to be anti-creature. Some of them can help pump our Nefarox, get his commander damage through, or protect him from death. One of the best Auras to protect your whole enchanted team is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Necromancer&#039;s Magemark" href="#" target="_blank">Necromancer&#039;s Magemark</a> from Guildpact (80 decks). While you'd lose any Auras attached to your creatures, getting those creatures back is just fantastic! Speaking of which, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shade&#039;s Form" href="#" target="_blank">Shade&#039;s Form</a> is an excellent <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="False Demise" href="#" target="_blank">False Demise</a> for black, allowing you to steal an opposing creature when it hits the bin. The buff on the creature only helps to add to the political benefits of the card. I'm shocked it's only played in 274 decks.
<a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sadistic Glee" href="#" target="_blank">Sadistic Glee</a> (263 decks) and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ordeal of Erebos" href="#" target="_blank">Ordeal of Erebos</a> (188 decks) can give our creatures a more permanent boost after enchanting them. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Inner Demon" href="#" target="_blank">Inner Demon</a>, played in 73 decks, provides a pump, some evasion, as well as a small board wipe. Also giving some evasion, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dragon Shadow" href="#" target="_blank">Dragon Shadow</a> (295 decks) can make your creature fearsome over and over again. Assuming the creature can connect, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cloak of Confusion" href="#" target="_blank">Cloak of Confusion</a> from Ice Age does some great "hand management" to disrupt our opponents, seeing play in just 16 decks. Lastly, another source of hand disruption, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Strands of Undeath" href="#" target="_blank">Strands of Undeath</a> (50 decks) provides a regenerative shield to protect the lucky creature it lands on.

Since we're playing so many Auras, it's probably a good idea to include the black Constellation creatures: <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Grim Guardian" href="#" target="_blank">Grim Guardian</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Agent of Erebos" href="#" target="_blank">Agent of Erebos</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thoughtrender Lamia" href="#" target="_blank">Thoughtrender Lamia</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doomwake Giant" href="#" target="_blank">Doomwake Giant</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dreadbringer Lampads" href="#" target="_blank">Dreadbringer Lampads</a>. The Lampads get special mention, as they're only played in 298 decks. There's a suite of other powerful enchantment creatures also in the deck, along with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Blightcaster" href="#" target="_blank">Blightcaster</a>, which has honorable Constellation and sees play in 274 decks. With all this enchantment-fall, you'll be happy to set off that <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Screams from Within" href="#" target="_blank">Screams from Within</a> chain for sure!
One final creature that I should talk about, even though it's not enchantment-based, is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Xenic Poltergeist" href="#" target="_blank">Xenic Poltergeist</a>. This Legends card has become a favorite of mine for black decks that have trouble handling artifacts. This can make a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Paradox Engine" href="#" target="_blank">Paradox Engine</a> into a 5/5 for one go around the table, making it susceptible to <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Damnation" href="#" target="_blank">Damnation</a> or any other mono-black creature removal. Right now, it only sees play in 161 decks, but I want to see that number creep higher.

<h2>Colorless Support</h2>

There are four colorless cards worth mentioning that add greatly to the black enchantress theme. First, we have the all-star <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Skull of Orm" href="#" target="_blank">Skull of Orm</a>, capable of resurrecting our spent Auras for their reuse. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crystal Chimes" href="#" target="_blank">Crystal Chimes</a> fills a similar role, though it's only a one-shot.
Of note in the "under 300" club, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crown of the Ages" href="#" target="_blank">Crown of the Ages</a> helps to swap Auras among creatures. This will help you get the most of the enchantments, in case their host is about to say goodbye, or maybe it'll help get that <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chime of Night" href="#" target="_blank">Chime of Night</a> on the creature that's about to bite it. Plus, with all these auras targeting your opponents' baddies, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arcane Lighthouse" href="#" target="_blank">Arcane Lighthouse</a> can help make sure that hexproof and shroud won't get in the way.

Forgotten Harvest - Nefarox Enchantress

<h1>Krakens on Horseback with Swords</h1>
Welcome back, everyone, to another iteration of Forgotten Harvest, the article series where I highlight cards in 300 decks or less on EDHREC. This week will be all about sticking to a challenging deckbuilding restriction, and the underplayed cards that can look great with those restrictions in mind. I'm also super-excited, because this means I can talk about my most favorite deck ever!

Travel back with me to the year 2015. It's a Saturday morning around 10:00 AM. Past-Kyle has popped into his local gaming store, Gabi's Olympic Cards and Comics in Olympia, WA, to take in the goings-on. He has a reputation at the store for adoring the jankiest builds, and for hunting through box after box for a copy of some obscure card that he looked up on Gatherer the other night. Scott, the gentleman tending the Magic counter, brings up his latest Commander build for sale at the store, called Water Polo. The premise of the deck hearkens back to a previous conversation about how much fun it would be to put Equipment on creatures that obviously wouldn't be able to use the item, like putting <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Champion&#039;s Helm" href="#" target="_blank">Champion&#039;s Helm</a> on a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stillmoon Cavalier" href="#" target="_blank">Stillmoon Cavalier</a>. This lead to thoughts of an Octopus wielding a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Loxodon Warhammer" href="#" target="_blank">Loxodon Warhammer</a> while riding on horseback, and thus the deck was born. After a quick peek at the contents, Kyle decides Water Polo will be coming home with him.

I've spent the last 4 years improving, tweaking, and "fancifying" the deck. When Kaladesh introduced Vehicles, they were quickly slotted in. When I finally landed a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jace, the Mind Sculptor" href="#" target="_blank">Jace, the Mind Sculptor</a>, it was an immediate add. All the while, I've held true to three rules:
<ol>
<li>Water Polo must be about Krakens on horseback with swords. There must always exist the themes of big sea creatures and Equipment in the deck.</li>
<li>Water Polo isn't a control deck. I can't run a bunch of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Counterspell" href="#" target="_blank">Counterspell</a> variants. Some removal is okay, but always keep the deck about Rule #1.</li>
<li>With the exception of it's general, Water Polo can't have anthropomorphic creatures. No Humans, no Merfolk, no Pirates, no Spirits. Every creature in the 99 must look ridiculous when equipped, or on horseback, or crewing a Vehicle.</li>
</ol>
Rule #3 is the big challenge. I've had to make some very interesting design choices in order to keep Merfolk out and still manage a decent mana curve. We'll get more into that later, but first I should get into some of the heavy-hitters in the deck.

<h2>Denizens of the Deep</h2>

Commanding the Water Polo team is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sun Quan, Lord of Wu" href="#" target="_blank">Sun Quan, Lord of Wu</a>. I grant him a special exception on the anthropomorphic rule, as he is the only way I can get all my sea creatures on horseback. While this is primarily there for the gimmick, it also greatly affects my choice of which big bubble-blasting beasts to include in the 99. In Commander, Horsemanship essentially keeps my creatures from being blocked in all instances, so already-unblockable creatures like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deep-Sea Kraken" href="#" target="_blank">Deep-Sea Kraken</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scrapdiver Serpent" href="#" target="_blank">Scrapdiver Serpent</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tidal Kraken" href="#" target="_blank">Tidal Kraken</a> are no longer necessary. It also makes <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stormsurge Kraken" href="#" target="_blank">Stormsurge Kraken</a> far worse than normal, hence its exclusion from the list.
<a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tromokratis" href="#" target="_blank">Tromokratis</a> technically falls into that category as well, but it has proven to be an excellent opportunity to take advantage of opponents' misplays. Those on the other side of the table have been so focused on making sure they have a way to stop this big'un that they avoid the red zone or hold off on activated abilities.

<h2>Swords and Hammers and Boots, Oh My!</h2>
I want to make sure my Water Polo crew has only the best polo equipment, so a good chunk of the deck is filled with the best attachable artifacts I could find. This also serves a second purpose of helping to drop the mana curve. It isn't enough on its own, which is why there are plenty of mana rocks to help.
Equipment generally serve one of three purposes: protect the team, do something great when attacking, or provide help when blocking. There's not much need for additional pump or making my creatures unblockable, but keeping something alive with a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Darksteel Plate" href="#" target="_blank">Darksteel Plate</a> is more along the lines of what the deck needs. The same is true of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sword of Feast and Famine" href="#" target="_blank">Sword of Feast and Famine</a> untapping lands. The Vehicles work better with the smaller sea creatures, and potentially offer something on their own, like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cultivator&#039;s Caravan" href="#" target="_blank">Cultivator&#039;s Caravan</a>.

<h2>Those in Under 300 Leagues</h2>
The cards mentioned above are classics of the genre, but the deck is also full to brimming with underused cards that show up in less than 300 decks on EDHREC. Let's see what gems lurk beneath the depths.
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Giant Oyster"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Sand Squid"></div></div>
One of the critical pieces this deck struggles with is removal. There's plenty of bounce from the Leviathans above, and from <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Whelming Wave" href="#" target="_blank">Whelming Wave</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cyclonic Rift" href="#" target="_blank">Cyclonic Rift</a>, but repeatable removal is lacking. Offering some support with this, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Giant Oyster" href="#" target="_blank">Giant Oyster</a> (174 decks) can help tap down a problem creature and slowly crush it to death. Another creature tapper is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sand Squid" href="#" target="_blank">Sand Squid</a>, an oft-forgotten gem from Mercadian Masques, only appearing in 105 decks. It fills a similar role, just without the -1/-1 counters, trading them for a 2/2 body capable of crewing a Vehicle, not to mention the very relevant Islandwalk, given the <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stormtide Leviathan" href="#" target="_blank">Stormtide Leviathan</a> in the deck.
These creatures not only aid in removal, but they meet the non-anthropomorphic requirement and drop the mana curve slightly. I've found these cards to be just powerful enough to provide removal without drawing the ire of the table. I've never had either removed before getting to use them at least once, and usually they stick around far longer. There's also nothing like throwing some Equipment on either of them and swinging in with a bizarre Jitte-wielding Oyster.
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Spiny Starfish"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Chambered Nautilus"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Dandan"></div></div>
Talk about weird abilities in blue! <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spiny Starfish" href="#" target="_blank">Spiny Starfish</a> from Alliances is one of the hard-to-find aquatic regenerators. Not only that, it also makes baby starfish when the regeneration triggers! What a kooky three-drop that slots perfectly into the sea creatures theme. Found in 121 decks on EDHREC, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spiny Starfish" href="#" target="_blank">Spiny Starfish</a> provides some excellent hard-to-remove defense while the deck ramps up to dropping its first Kraken.
Another three-drop helping out in the early game is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chambered Nautilus" href="#" target="_blank">Chambered Nautilus</a>. With its "when blocked" trigger, this mollusk is an excellent target for Equipment. When the Nautilus is holding a sword, it becomes a lot harder to just let it on through. It's only seeing play in 10 decks right now, but I think that number could be much higher.
I expect to get so much grief for including <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dandan" href="#" target="_blank">Dandan</a> in a Commander deck, but hear me out: it's a cheap sea creature, it's a threatening blocker, and it can Crew any Vehicle in the deck. Somehow, it sees play in 42 decks right now. Honestly, I think that number is high, likely due to some Islandhome-themed builds. In this specific instance, I've had trouble finding something as effective as this two-drop, especially since I'm not running any Merfolk or Wizards.

One of this deck's (many) faults is difficulty recovering in the late game. To help keep life totals from dipping too low, I've included <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kraken&#039;s Eye" href="#" target="_blank">Kraken&#039;s Eye</a>. All of these life-gaining artifacts tend not to see much play, with the Eye only included in 245 decklists. As a bonus, I get some life from other players' blue spells as well. The only hard part is remembering the trigger.
Another weakness for this deck is facing down flyers. Luckily, the world enchantment <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mystic Decree" href="#" target="_blank">Mystic Decree</a> helps out a bunch! Sure, lots of sea creatures will end up losing their Islandwalk, but the ability isn't very relevant when they already have Horsemanship. I especially like dropping this right after <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stormtide Leviathan" href="#" target="_blank">Stormtide Leviathan</a> hits the battlefield. The break from combat can be a big help, and serves as a political play as well.
Finally, I've found it necessary to prepare for spot removal against the big Leviathans. Blue doesn't offer much in the way of recursion, but <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Homarid Spawning Bed" href="#" target="_blank">Homarid Spawning Bed</a> does offer something before the beastie hits the bin. The Camarid tokens it generates function as great chump blockers, or can be used to Crew vehicles. While it's only in 165 decks, I think this is a great option for most blue/black reanimator builds.

Forgotten Harvest – Water Polo

Hey everyone! Welcome back to another edition of Forgotten Harvest, the article series that features cards used in 300 decks or less on EDHREC. This time, I'll be stepping a little out of my comfort zone to talk about a Voltron deck, and with a commander that doesn't exactly seem like Voltron to boot! I'm talking about <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient" href="#" target="_blank">Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient</a>.

Now, I know what you may be thinking: "Kyle, why on Earth would you do something like this?" In fact, some in my playgroup have called this idea downright idiotic. But I'm telling you, this concept has been so very surprising! It's not the most tuned deck in the world, but it can hold its own at the table. It allows for political plays, it has alternate win conditions, and it has versatile removal to help knock down any threats. Better than any of that, it features some great red and colorless cards that aren't seeing nearly enough play. Let's get into them first.

<h2>Armaments of Old</h2>

When one thinks of mono-red Voltron, Equipment is naturally the first thing that comes to mind. Kurkesh doesn't benefit from Equipment all that much, though. "I'll pay 2 to equip this <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sword of Fire and Ice" href="#" target="_blank">Sword of Fire and Ice</a>, and then pay an extra red to do it again." Yeah, not so effective. However, if you delve into the annuls of artifacts before Mirrodin, you can open up all kinds of new opportunities.
The old 'equip' ability, featured on cards like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tawnos&#039;s Weaponry" href="#" target="_blank">Tawnos&#039;s Weaponry</a> (2 decks on EDHREC) and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Zelyon Sword" href="#" target="_blank">Zelyon Sword</a> (7 decks) doesn't seem all that powerful. It costs way too much for the buff your creature gets, even if the effect is "indefinite." With Kurkesh, you can make those buffs a little better. Yes, the cards are still on the weaker side, and the low deck counts for these cards are justified. But that permanent boost is a needed option in a deck like this.

Other artifacts offer a better (but less permanent) pump. An all-star artifact from Stronghold, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sword of the Chosen" href="#" target="_blank">Sword of the Chosen</a> sees play in 257 decks, and can get our Kurkesh +4/+4 for a turn. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tooth of Chiss-Goria" href="#" target="_blank">Tooth of Chiss-Goria</a> (210 decks) also hands us a small power bump on what's ideally a free artifact.
Additionally, from Mirrodin's Tower cycle (well, one of them waited to show up in Scars of Mirrodin, but better late than never), <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tower of Champions" href="#" target="_blank">Tower of Champions</a> provides a big spender a whopping +12/+12 for their Ogre spirit, and it sees play in only 34 decks on EDHREC. From that same cycle, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tower of Fortunes" href="#" target="_blank">Tower of Fortunes</a> can offer some excellent card draw, but sadly was cut from my final list. I'd still encourage you to try it out and let me know if it works for you.

We'll also want to grant some abilities to Kurkesh to help in combat. This was somewhat tricky, as many abilities, like first strike, don't do much when they're copied. Flanking, however, does trigger separately for each instance on the creature, so <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jabari&#039;s Banner" href="#" target="_blank">Jabari&#039;s Banner</a> feels like a good choice which sees play in only 46 decks.
Counters are also a great thing to double, as anyone playing <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vorel of the Hull Clade" href="#" target="_blank">Vorel of the Hull Clade</a> knows. So <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dragon Blood" href="#" target="_blank">Dragon Blood</a> is another great addition. I'm honestly surprised this card is in only 220 decks, as +1/+1 counters seem to be more and more relevant with each passing year.
I feel like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Golem Artisan" href="#" target="_blank">Golem Artisan</a> fits into our 'weaponry' category as well, though it's obvious that it can't buff our commander. In only 235 decks, it's another card I'm shocked doesn't see more play. The abilities can be used on itself, or hopefully <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Geode Golem" href="#" target="_blank">Geode Golem</a>, offering us an alternate attacker should things start going sideways for our ogre. Or maybe we just start making things into artifacts....

<h2>I am Ironman!</h2>

It's good in a Voltron deck to have a couple of beatsticky options, in case your commander ends up listening to a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Song of the Dryads" href="#" target="_blank">Song of the Dryads</a>. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hellkite Tyrant" href="#" target="_blank">Hellkite Tyrant</a> is an obvious pick. Another card in need of more play is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Megatog" href="#" target="_blank">Megatog</a>. In 218 decks on EDHREC, this beasty Atog is a fantastic finisher late in the game when resources are used up, and you're flush with artifacts. He can be particularly mean when accompanied by <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pia&#039;s Revolution" href="#" target="_blank">Pia&#039;s Revolution</a> and a free artifact like the aforementioned <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tooth of Chiss-Goria" href="#" target="_blank">Tooth of Chiss-Goria</a>. This is especially true when you and an opponent lock eyes across the table and decide it's time to take out Player #3.
Offering support instead of fangs, we have another great creature to use: <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aladdin" href="#" target="_blank">Aladdin</a>. This somehow-not-legendary creature (162 decks) can offer some great removal, but really thrives with a card like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Liquimetal Coating" href="#" target="_blank">Liquimetal Coating</a> to open up the available targets to anything your <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Golem&#039;s Heart" href="#" target="_blank">Golem&#039;s Heart</a> desires. If only we could make <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aladdin" href="#" target="_blank">Aladdin</a> an artifact so its ability was Kurkesh-friendly.
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Ashnod&#039;s Transmogrant"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Transmogrifying Licid"></div></div>
These two beauties may be able to help with that! <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ashnod&#039;s Transmogrant" href="#" target="_blank">Ashnod&#039;s Transmogrant</a> (136 decks) and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Transmogrifying Licid" href="#" target="_blank">Transmogrifying Licid</a> (36 decks) are both fascinating cards capable of steel-plating the creature of your choice. Maybe you're making <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aladdin" href="#" target="_blank">Aladdin</a> or <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Viashino Heretic" href="#" target="_blank">Viashino Heretic</a> into androids so Kurkesh can copy their abilities. Or maybe you're just giving them more targets over in other corners of the battlefield. Either way, these cards give you extra iterations of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Liquimetal Coating" href="#" target="_blank">Liquimetal Coating</a> to help control the board.
While we're on the topic of removal, there are a few other artifacts with copy-able abilities to help with that control. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Edifice of Authority" href="#" target="_blank">Edifice of Authority</a> (271 decks) is a great card for locking down would-be attackers and/or blockers. The second ability lasts until your next turn, and gets even better when duplicated using Kurkesh. From Nemesis, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Belbe&#039;s Armor" href="#" target="_blank">Belbe&#039;s Armor</a> sees play in 287 decks, and can be a great way to fog an attacker or two, as well as an emergency buff for Kurkesh, should the need arise.

Based on the curve, I opted to use <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ring of Gix" href="#" target="_blank">Ring of Gix</a> over the wildly popular <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Icy Manipulator" href="#" target="_blank">Icy Manipulator</a>. Yes, the Echo cost may be a problem in some cases, but it's a card I've been wanting to try for a while. It only sees play in 57 decks right now, so give it a break!
Lastly, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Amber Prison" href="#" target="_blank">Amber Prison</a> (67 decks) normally looks a little over-costed, but when combined with Kurkesh's ability, the artifact can pull off a lockdown 2-for-1. It can definitely help wrangle a nasty commander that just keeps coming back, tapping it down instead of allowing your opponent to simply recast it. I'm sure I could keep going, but how about I show how all these pieces come together in the deck already?

Forgotten Harvest – Mono-Red Voltron

Welcome back to Forgotten Harvest, home of cards used in 300 decks or less on EDHREC. Before getting into it, I want to say how grateful I am for the positive response to my last article. I had no idea there was such a hunger for something different in a Jund deck. If there are other color combinations where you're looking to spice things up, or a commander you think needs some attention, let me know in the comments. Generally, I plan to let the underplayed cards guide the type of deck I discuss, but if I can do that while scratching an itch felt by the community at large, then all the better!

As hinted at the end of the <a href="https://articles.edhrec.com/forgotten-harvest-hellbent-on-innovation/">last article</a>, this time I'll be exploring a bounce deck, helmed by the bounciest Dragon I know: <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dromar, the Banisher" href="#" target="_blank">Dromar, the Banisher</a>. Before getting into all the beautiful bouncy gems that lie in Magic's past, we should talk about how self-bounce has lost the war for relevance to blink strategies.

Going back to the success of cards like Time Spiral's <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Momentary Blink" href="#" target="_blank">Momentary Blink</a>, Wizards of the Coast has been emphasizing the role of blink in the game over self-bounce. Yes, we did just see <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Paradoxical Outcome" href="#" target="_blank">Paradoxical Outcome</a> and a reprint of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rescue" href="#" target="_blank">Rescue</a>, but these have been the exception more often than the rule over the last 10 years. I say this as someone who vividly remembers <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flicker" href="#" target="_blank">Flicker</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Liberate" href="#" target="_blank">Liberate</a> as the only blink options for a long time.
Since those simpler times, blink has effectively demolished the modern usability of self-bounce strategies. I get into this because I expect a number of readers to question the relevance of a deck that uses self-bounce rather than blink. Be aware the deck I'm proposing here isn't trying to be the best. It's taking a look at self-bounce and specifically focusing on the cards that don't translate into a blink strategy. You're not going to find all this stuff in <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brago, King Eternal" href="#" target="_blank">Brago, King Eternal</a>. If you like a competitive, edge, blue-white blink is probably more correct for you. However, if you want a deck that's fun, dynamic, unpredictable, and customizable, then keep reading.

<h2>After a Quick Search on Gatherer...</h2>

There are only two cards I know in all of Magic: the Gathering that trigger when a creature is bounced: <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Azorius Aethermage" href="#" target="_blank">Azorius Aethermage</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stormfront Riders" href="#" target="_blank">Stormfront Riders</a>. These cards are appropriately underplayed given their niche usability, appearing in 49 and 242 decks on EDHREC, respectively. Even so, their abilities are fantastic! <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stormfront Riders" href="#" target="_blank">Stormfront Riders</a> replaces a bounced creature with a nice chump blocker, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Azorius Aethermage" href="#" target="_blank">Azorius Aethermage</a> gives you access to some very cheap draw upon bounce. The Aethermage triggers not just for creatures, but for all bounced permanents you control (Hint: this may become relevant in a future article).
With these two cards as the foundation, it should be clear why <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dromar, the Banisher" href="#" target="_blank">Dromar, the Banisher</a> is the preferred commander over, say, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Merieke Ri Berit" href="#" target="_blank">Merieke Ri Berit</a>. There's a 60% chance that, upon triggering his ability, Dromar will bounce himself back to hand. That's definitely not a great ability compared to those of the other Primeval Dragons. However, this deck tries to turn that to our advantage. Naming white, blue, or black after a Dromar connection could mean an army of Soldiers or a bunch of draw triggers. Plus, you get to recast all the creatures of that color with great "enter the battlefield" effects.
I tried to include some cards to help the Dragon connect with an opponent, such as <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rogue&#039;s Passage" href="#" target="_blank">Rogue&#039;s Passage</a>. Alas, as is the case in most decks, there's a balance in finding room for all the critical strategies of one's deck. I highly recommend that you customize the amount of evasion and removal in the deck below to suit your playgroup's meta. As someone creating a deck for public viewing, this becomes the hardest variable to consider while brewing. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of customization: don't just copy, but make it your own.

<h2>I Never Thought I'd Cast <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Escape Routes" href="#" target="_blank">Escape Routes</a></h2>
Since we're focusing on bouncing our own stuff, let's look at some more options for returning creatures to our hand. Played in a mere 31 decks, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Escape Routes" href="#" target="_blank">Escape Routes</a> is a card that I would normally walk right past. In this deck, though, it can be a real superstar, enabling shenanigans with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spell Queller" href="#" target="_blank">Spell Queller</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Faceless Butcher" href="#" target="_blank">Faceless Butcher</a>. With the "enters the battlefield" trigger on the stack, use <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Escape Routes" href="#" target="_blank">Escape Routes</a> to bounce the creature. This will cause the "leaves the battlefield" ability to resolve first. Since no card has been exiled yet, that ability fizzles. This is followed by the original ETB trigger, which exiles the targeted card permanently. This will also work with self-bouncer <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tolarian Sentinel" href="#" target="_blank">Tolarian Sentinel</a> (played in only 28 decks), and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wizard Mentor" href="#" target="_blank">Wizard Mentor</a> (played in 78).

Also included in the deck are <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crystal Shard" href="#" target="_blank">Crystal Shard</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Erratic Portal" href="#" target="_blank">Erratic Portal</a>. While both of these already see plenty of play, they also help turn your <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spell Queller" href="#" target="_blank">Spell Queller</a> into a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dissipate" href="#" target="_blank">Dissipate</a>. While I'm on the subject of these conditional bouncers on sticks, I should also mention the inclusion of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cowardice" href="#" target="_blank">Cowardice</a> in this deck. While it's only used in 255 decks on EDHREC, it turns <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crystal Shard" href="#" target="_blank">Crystal Shard</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Erratic Portal" href="#" target="_blank">Erratic Portal</a> into a surefire threat against opposing creatures. The icing on the cake is that it also complicates the plans of opponents playing Voltron, equipment, or token strategies. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cowardice" href="#" target="_blank">Cowardice</a> isn't going to make you any friends at the table, but sometimes you need to make a little mischief. I mean, if we all played Group Hug, games would only end through <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Divine Intervention" href="#" target="_blank">Divine Intervention</a>.
Back in Planeshift, we saw a series of 'gating' creatures. Many of you are familiar with a common from this series: <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cavern Harpy" href="#" target="_blank">Cavern Harpy</a>. This card has some great repeatable self-bounce, and is an obvious choice for many decks. There are two other neglected cards in this series that find a home with Dromar. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sawtooth Loon" href="#" target="_blank">Sawtooth Loon</a> sees play in 260 decks, and offers some self-bounce along with some great hand filtering. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doomsday Specter" href="#" target="_blank">Doomsday Specter</a>, on the other hand, hurts your opponents' hands, bounces a blue or black creature, and is on only 189 decklists.

I'm a big fan of these 'gating' creatures, if you can't tell. I think they're a frequently overlooked option for many decks, not just Esper bounce. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fleetfoot Panther" href="#" target="_blank">Fleetfoot Panther</a> is a staple for me in any Cat tribal build, and I'm still dying for an opportunity to use <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Natural Emergence" href="#" target="_blank">Natural Emergence</a> in a deck. Don't be surprised if, like Spellshapers, these 'gating' cards become a frequent soapbox of mine in this article series.

<h2>Let's Give These Folks a Big Hand</h2>
I've talked a lot about bouncing cards so far, but not so much what sets self-bounce apart from blink strategies, nor how this deck plans to win the game. In the end, it all boils down to three words: cards in hand. Without proper choices in deck construction, blink decks don't always keep a full hand. With bounce, you're sure to be rocking 6+ cards at any given time. In an effort to prepare, I added typical cards like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Reliquary Tower" href="#" target="_blank">Reliquary Tower</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thought Vessel" href="#" target="_blank">Thought Vessel</a>. There's another great addition that's frequently passed over, and it recently gained some new relevance. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Trusted Advisor" href="#" target="_blank">Trusted Advisor</a> from Saviors of Kamigawa is a wonderful addition to a deck that expects to rock a big hand. Currently played in 70 decks, I expect this number to shoot up thanks to its creature type and a certain new common from Ravnica Allegiance. You know the one.

While we're talking about Saviors of Kamigawa cards, I also looked at the Esper cards in the cycle of "Maro" legends from that set. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kagemaro, First to Suffer" href="#" target="_blank">Kagemaro, First to Suffer</a> provides some excellent removal on par with <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mutilate" href="#" target="_blank">Mutilate</a> in a mono-black deck. It's an absolute all-star right after a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Paradoxical Outcome" href="#" target="_blank">Paradoxical Outcome</a> or a connection trigger from <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dromar, the Banisher" href="#" target="_blank">Dromar, the Banisher</a>. I left <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Soramaro, First to Dream" href="#" target="_blank">Soramaro, First to Dream</a> out of the deck, but it would fit in here as well. In its place, I dropped a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sturmgeist" href="#" target="_blank">Sturmgeist</a> which I would argue is better given the curve and how little this deck cares about bounced lands.
The underplayed gem of this cycle comes in at 187 total decks, and goes by the name <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kiyomaro, First to Stand" href="#" target="_blank">Kiyomaro, First to Stand</a>. Sure, it needs some evasion, but we're already running that to help Dromar. Plus, the lifegain triggers on any damage, not on combat damage to a player. So long as your hand stays heavy (and it definitely will), Kiyomaro will pose a great threat and keep us in the game. And don't stress about removal, given all the sweet, sweet bounce we're running.

Forgotten Harvest – Dromar's Bounce House

That’s Latin for “Hello everyone!” My name’s Kyle, avid land-tapper and creature-caster for nearly 20 years now, and I have to say that I’m ashamed of you, Online Commander Community. While you’re all busy optimizing your decks and drooling over shiny new Magic expansions, there are some perfectly good cards for Commander that lay sad and neglected in the corner. They deserve at least a look, and that’s what this article series will be about: a discussion of cards listed in 300 decks or less on EDHREC.
Did that scare you off? No? Good. Because this is going to be so much fun!

I want to make it clear that “neglected” doesn’t necessarily mean “cheap.” <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Angus Mackenzie" href="#" target="_blank">Angus Mackenzie</a> is only played in 407 decks, but I’m sure if he weren’t so expensive (thanks Reserved List!), he would see more play. The commander for this first article is also expensive due to RL status. But, as I do in today’s article, I’ll offer alternatives to the wallet-hungry cards. I want these articles to be valuable, and that won’t be the case if I only talk about cards no one can find or afford.
Speaking of valuable information, the cards I’ll be talking about will not be in the bargain basement of power level. I’m not doing 1,000 words on the merits of casting <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vizzerdrix" href="#" target="_blank">Vizzerdrix</a>. At the same time, don’t expect the top-tier, tuned-deck power level, either. Those cards are definitely being played in more than 300 decks already. There are some great, situational cards that look like superstars in the right deck. Expect a lot of those from me.

<h2>A Flaming, Falling Goat-Man</h2>

The “right deck” this week is a Jund Hellbent build. Red and black certainly have a lot to "draw" from to play into this theme, and green has some surprising contributions. The first one is <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aether Rift" href="#" target="_blank">Aether Rift</a>. Played in a mere 23 EDH decks on EDHREC, this Hellbent hero really shines when you can remove the 'random' portion of the discard. Perhaps you begin the turn with only one card in hand. Specifically, a creature card. More specifically, a great creature card. Most specifically, a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vorinclex" href="#" target="_blank">Vorinclex</a>. Alright, it doesn’t have a be a Praetor, but some big beefy chunk of power and toughness is what we’re looking for.
“But Kyle,” you say, “Somebody’s going to pay five life for sure!” To which my reply is, "That’s why WotC made <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Genesis" href="#" target="_blank">Genesis</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oversold Cemetery" href="#" target="_blank">Oversold Cemetery</a>," along with any number of other cards that repeatedly recur creatures to your hand (I’ll get into them next). I guarantee after a few turns of stopping your tank of a card from entering the battlefield, either you’ll finally get your creature, or the table’s rage will have ended the Rift. Either way, lots of life will have been paid, and you’ll be glad for it.
There is a strike against <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aether Rift" href="#" target="_blank">Aether Rift</a>: the card just does not play well with Madness. As of Shadows over Innistrad, the Madness mechanic exiles the discarded card until you make the decision whether to cast it or not. Because of how the triggers from Madness and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aether Rift" href="#" target="_blank">Aether Rift</a> stack, the discarded Madness card is in exile when the Rift tries to return it. I’ve still included Madness cards in the deck below, despite this negative interaction. There are plenty of other ways to discard, which make those cards worth it.

<h2>Speaking of Repeatable Recursion… </h2>
Running cards like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aether Rift" href="#" target="_blank">Aether Rift</a>, as well as a vast array of discard effects typical for a Hellbent deck, we need a commander capable of selectively adding back to our hand after it’s depletion. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Adun Oakenshield" href="#" target="_blank">Adun Oakenshield</a>, the Jund legend from Legends, takes care of that for us. Most certainly a neglected card, Mr. Oakenshield only appears in 151 decks on EDHREC (not just as commander, but anywhere in the 100). We’ll want to use his recursion ability just before starting our turn to bring back a key creature card for use on the coming turn. I won’t say he’s top-tier, and there are other, better Jund reanimator commanders, but I’ll argue that none of them do for Hellbent what Oakenshield can.

Now, I did say I would provide alternatives to expensive cards, so if you find yourself without Adun, I recommend the also-neglected <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Xira Arien" href="#" target="_blank">Xira Arien</a> (293 decks total). While Xira won’t give you the ability to put a specific creature into your hand, the card draw option right before you start your turn is a big help. She’s far easier on the budget, and some minor tweaks can increase her effectiveness as a replacement (I’m looking at you, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Haunted Crossroads" href="#" target="_blank">Haunted Crossroads</a>). For the rest of the article, I’m going to stick with Oakenshield to simplify the discussion, but if you want more information about using <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Xira Arien" href="#" target="_blank">Xira Arien</a> and similar abilities in a Hellbent deck, ask away in the comments.
Naturally, there’s a need for redundancy in the deck, so let’s look toward another neglected favorite that raises the dead and also functions as a discard source: <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Undertaker" href="#" target="_blank">Undertaker</a>. Found in only 280 decks online, this is a card just begging to be sleeved up. Yes, it is stuck on a skimpy 1/1 body, but the threat posed by this card is so minimal that I’ve never had trouble with its removal before I get off a couple of activations. This is a go-to card for me whenever I want a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Raise Dead" href="#" target="_blank">Raise Dead</a> effect, and I can’t recommend it enough.

<h2>Spells of all Shapers and Sizes</h2>
I would wager that Spellshapers are the most neglected of any creature type. In addition to <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Undertaker" href="#" target="_blank">Undertaker</a> above, I have a trio of Spellshapers to help enable Hellbent. First, we have <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Silverglade Pathfinder" href="#" target="_blank">Silverglade Pathfinder</a> helping us to dig for land and empty our hand. Only used in 243 decks, please consider it as an alternative for (or in addition to) <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sakura-Tribe Elder" href="#" target="_blank">Sakura-Tribe Elder</a> in reanimator decks. Instead of reanimating the Elder over and over, the Pathfinder allows you to pitch cards for lands, which we can then recur with Oakenshield later. I’m not saying it’s at the same power level as the Elder, but it can create different scenarios.

Next up is a great source of repeatable removal also from the Mercadian Masques expansion. <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Notorious Assassin" href="#" target="_blank">Notorious Assassin</a> is only played in a mere 86 decks, but a <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dark Banishing" href="#" target="_blank">Dark Banishing</a> each turn can be so beneficial. I like to think of this as the equivalent to <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Attrition" href="#" target="_blank">Attrition</a> in a sacrifice deck. I will concede that four mana for the creature can be on the steep side, but the cost per activation of its ability is right where it should be.
Finally, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hammer Mage" href="#" target="_blank">Hammer Mage</a> provides some great mass-artifact removal, and it’s only played in 151 decks. Melting down all the mana rocks on the board for scrap can be such a fulfilling ability. Afterward, maintaining that threat on the battefield, preventing additional artifacts from hitting the board, will set your opponents back a few turns. This extra time just provides you more turns to reanimate something sweet, or maybe extra triggers on <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aether Rift" href="#" target="_blank">Aether Rift</a> if you’re lucky.

<h2>One with Nothing</h2>

Now, onto the deck itself! In addition to a hefty smattering of Spellshapers, there are some excellent “discard-matters” cards like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Archfiend of Ifnir" href="#" target="_blank">Archfiend of Ifnir</a>, <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nahiri&#039;s Wrath" href="#" target="_blank">Nahiri&#039;s Wrath</a>, and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Big Game Hunter" href="#" target="_blank">Big Game Hunter</a>. This deck expects to play with a big graveyard and very little hand. Ergo, there are also some elements shared with reanimator decks in the form of <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stitch Together" href="#" target="_blank">Stitch Together</a> and <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Anger" href="#" target="_blank">Anger</a>. It certainly helps to have some heavy hitters, so three of the Praetors from New Phyrexia are also included.
You’ll notice that the deck is creature-heavy, and that’s intentional. This maximizes the value of our reanimating cards and allows us to easily get back anything that’s destroyed. Doing this does potentially put us at a disadvantage to cards like <a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Torpor Orb" href="#" target="_blank">Torpor Orb</a>, but I’ll let you make appropriate adjustments depending on your playgroup’s meta.
