<p>Hello, everyone, my name is Jonathan, and today I'll be going over the best uncommon legends from <em>Marvel's Spider-Man</em>!</p>
<p>As we know, this set brought along a ton of new possible commanders, and, while everyone's attention was focused on rares and mythic rares, this time I'll be looking at some of the numerous uncommon cards you might have overlooked among all of these new toys!</p>
<p>One quick side note before starting: I'll cover them in color identity order. This means that the order they are presented in does not reflect the quality of the cards at all. With this out of the way, let's dive into the best uncommon legends!</p>

<p>I already talked about this card at length in <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/the-best-mayhem-cards-from-marvels-spider-man">another article</a>, so I won't repeat myself too much, but I also <em>really</em> need to express how powerful this card is. In fact, when put into the right list, this is a three-mana clone effect that circumvents the legend rule, perhaps allowing you to have two copies of your commander in play at the same time. Retaining its name although it has another creature's textbox immediately puts this card in the same tier as staples of the format such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spark Double" href="#" target="_blank">Spark Double</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sakashima of a Thousand Faces" href="#" target="_blank">Sakashima of a Thousand Faces</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>I wouldn't recommend playing it as your commander of choice, since the aforementioned <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sakashima of a Thousand Faces" href="#" target="_blank">Sakashima of a Thousand Faces</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> actually does its job better. Nonetheless, it's still a great legend to put in the 99, so if your deck cares about your commander (as it should), this is a card you should absolutely consider including, especially if you run discard synergies.</p>

<p>Let's start with this card's glaring problem: its mana value. Before reading what it does, this is a six-mana mono-blue creature with no built-in protection. In other words, it's an expensive card in a color combination with little to no ramp and it requires additional cards to grant its survivability.</p>
<p>But hey, many great stories have a rough start.</p>
<p>Looking at its effects, that's where things get interesting. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Madame Web, Clairvoyant" href="#" target="_blank">Madame Web</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows us to look at and cast noncreature cards from the top card of our library, and she also offers some top deck manipulation. Yes, I did omit the "Spider spells" part of its effect, but for a good reason: there are only 8 Spiders that can be played in mono-blue decks, so that's basically a non-existent line.</p>
<p>This card's effects are for sure interesting, for it basically grants unlimited card draw as long as there's a noncreature spell on the top of our library. Of course, it pairs extremely well with cantrips like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brainstorm" href="#" target="_blank">Brainstorm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ponder" href="#" target="_blank">Ponder</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Preordain" href="#" target="_blank">Preordain</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which can both be cast from the top <em>and</em> help us manipulate said top of the library.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, its drawbacks are equally relevant. Mainly, if our deck is not stacked correctly, we've basically paid six mana for a vanilla 4/4 with quite the target on its back.</p>
<p>All in all, this is for sure an interesting commander to build around, perhaps including cards with flashback to take advantage of the light mill sub-theme. I could also see it as a secret backup commander in the 99 of certain decks; <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kess, Dissident Mage" href="#" target="_blank">Kess, Dissident Mage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> comes off the top of my head.</p>

<p>This card makes for an interesting counter/reanimator commander. In fact, when reanimating, you usually end up with one scary creature attacking, and it's rather difficult to build a wider board. That's where <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider-Man Noir" href="#" target="_blank">Spider-Man Noir</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> comes in clutch, rewarding you for attacking with only one body. At the same time, it synergizes well with small creatures that put counters on themselves, like the evergreen <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Walking Ballista" href="#" target="_blank">Walking Ballista</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Hence, the intended gameplan of the deck would be playing a bunch of small- to medium-sized creatures with a bunch of counters on them in the early game while filling the graveyard however you like. Then, in the midgame, our commander can start putting in some work, keeping the counters flowing and the graveyard full. Lastly, in the late game, our big monsters can come back form the underworld to close out the matter.</p>
<p>The clear problem with this idea is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider-Man Noir" href="#" target="_blank">Spider-Man Noir</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s mana cost. In fact, five mana is a bit too high for the whole engine to function without any effort. Of course, black's many ritual effects can help playing our commander earlier than usual, but that only goes so far.</p>

<p>This one is among the most interesting cards we've discussed today.</p>
<p>Let's get the obvious critique out of the way: it's a bit overpriced for its effect, but that's a leitmotiv across all of today's cards at this point.</p>
<p>Now, getting to the juicy part of this creature: it grants an absurd amount of card draw. It's extremely easy to modify a creature, and everyone can choose their own preferred flavor: counters, Auras, or Equipment. Personally, I'd recommend the latter two in this specific case, for they offer more options to grant evasion to your creatures. In fact, considering we are playing a white-blue commander, not many of our bodies will have built-in ways to grant they'll connect in combat. Of course, we can count on flyers, but something as simple as an <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aqueous Form" href="#" target="_blank">Aqueous Form</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Loxodon Warhammer" href="#" target="_blank">Loxodon Warhammer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will most likely have more success.</p>
<p>The icing on this very tasty cake is the counter that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="SP//dr, Piloted by Peni" href="#" target="_blank">SP//dr, Piloted by Peni</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> comes with as it enters the battlefield: this allows any other creature to immediately become modified and, therefore, a draw engine.</p>

<p>I wanted to cover these two cards together because they both fuel a new kindred strategy that this set has created: Villains. Actually, I had wanted to talk about another card first, namely, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tombstone, Career Criminal" href="#" target="_blank">Tombstone, Career Criminal</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but I couldn't really justify it being at the helm of a mono-black Villain deck.</p>
<p>Instead, I'd like to refer to these three cards as the core of this new kindred deck, for they all bring something powerful to the table.</p>
<p>Starting with the last mentioned, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tombstone, Career Criminal" href="#" target="_blank">Tombstone, Career Criminal</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a perfect pivotal card for such a build. It provides recursion in the mid-to-late game while also counting on a very good effect throughout the game.</p>
<p>Next, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vulture, Scheming Scavenger" href="#" target="_blank">Vulture, Scheming Scavenger</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a very good aggressive card, making all of our Villains more difficult to block and giving us an incentive to enter the red zone as much as possible. The main problem with this card is, once again, its cost: six mana is way too much for such a simple effect, especially considering it doesn't have any kind of protection written in its text.</p>
<p>Last but not least, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Prowler, Clawed Thief" href="#" target="_blank">Prowler, Clawed Thief</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the true star of the show. First and foremost, it's as cheap as it gets: a three-mana evasive creature that can start swinging early. Yet, the truly interesting part comes in the second half of the card. In fact, not only is it cheap, it is also very good when played early, for every subsequent Villain will grant us card selection <em>and</em> graveyard filling.</p>

<p>In addition, the latter two commanders truly benefit from their color identity. Being in Dimir colors vastly deepens the pool of Villains to choose from, which was the main reason that prevented me from considering <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tombstone, Career Criminal" href="#" target="_blank">Tombstone, Career Criminal</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as a possible commander. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Prowler, Clawed Thief" href="#" target="_blank">Prowler, Clawed Thief</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in particular shines as a general option, both for the reasons mentioned before and because it fuels a graveyard-matters subtheme. Of course, both of the other two mentioned Villains perfectly fit in this strategy.</p>
<p>The only limiting factor I notice is the sheer number of creatures to choose from. It's true that the blue-black identity increases this quantity, but it's still far from many other established kindred strategies. As of now, there are 32 Villains in Dimir colors, which is not bad, but not excellent either. This implies we might end up including cards we don't really want to only for consistency's sake, and that's never a good sign.</p>
<p>All in all, I think this is a very promising deck idea, but it heavily relies on how much support the archetype will receive in future sets.</p>

The Best Uncommon Legends in Marvel's Spider-Man

<p>Legendary creatures come in all shapes and sizes. From high power like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lord of Tresserhorn" href="#" target="_blank">Lord of Tresserhorn</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, to the biggest of buts in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Pride of Hull Clade" href="#" target="_blank">The Pride of Hull Clade</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and everything in between. No matter the style of commander, they usually tend to be of the rare and mythic variety.</p>
<p>Technically, after some rules changes, uncommon legends were present since the time of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ramirez DePietro" href="#" target="_blank">Ramirez DePietro</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Over the years, an increasing number of legends of all rarities, including common ones, have joined the game.</p>
<p>Today, I give you what I think are the 10 best uncommon legendary creatures. Either for their relevancy as a commander, or what they can do in the 99, and a good mix of how much I enjoy the particular card.</p>
<p>Let's get to the list.</p>
<h2>1.) <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist" href="#" target="_blank">Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>First up is a creature from one of the best sets ever printed for the Commander format. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist" href="#" target="_blank">Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> from <em>Commander Legends</em> brings it all and then some with only a silver set symbol. Not only does he come with the partner mechanic and all the "broken" aspects related to that, he's also a big boon to multiple archetypes.</p>
<p>Whether it be Auras or Equipment, you have a way to either move permanents around from creature to creature or get around equip costs on cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Argentum Armor" href="#" target="_blank">Argentum Armor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Even if a more Voltron strategy isn't my personal preference, I can appreciate a great card when I see one. Ardenn opens up a world of possibilities and an exciting card.</p>

<p>Next up, we have a legend with which I'm intimately familiar. The lord of luxury indeed, Gonti. Truly one of my favorite cards ever made. There's something enjoyable about getting to play not only the cards in your deck, but the cards in your opponents' decks, too.</p>
<p>Gonti steals people's cards in the best way possible. You're the only one who knows what you took, and you can use any color of mana to cast the stolen goods.</p>
<p>Don't even get me started on the synergies with the card either.</p>

<p>The more Gontis I get onto the field, the better a game I will have. For an uncommon, this will end up being the most impactful card cast in an entire game.</p>

<p>Staying with mono-black, we have one of the most powerful cards on the list. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Syr Konrad, the Grim" href="#" target="_blank">Syr Konrad, the Grim</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can end a pod faster than you can blink. The fact that Konrad doesn't trigger from creatures on the battlefield is the only reason a table can stand a chance against this powerhouse uncommon.</p>
<p>Do you have infinite <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-b" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>? Guess what; you win the game. Have you dumped all your creatures into the graveyard? Well, that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Morality Shift" href="#" target="_blank">Morality Shift</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Forever Young" href="#" target="_blank">Forever Young</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in hand can turn that into a win.</p>
<p>Besides the game-winning combos offered to Konrad, he also offers you a consistent way to mess with the top of your opponents' decks and chip away at their life totals at the same time. Putting <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Syr Konrad, the Grim" href="#" target="_blank">Syr Konrad, the Grim</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in your deck will not only bring you joy, but will bring your deck a nice power-up. Making him your commander is also quite good.</p>
<h2>4.) <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="General Kreat, the Boltbringer" href="#" target="_blank">General Kreat, the Boltbringer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>What if you didn't want to pay <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-3" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-r" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Purphoros, God of the Forge" href="#" target="_blank">Purphoros, God of the Forge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>? Or maybe you want every copy of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Impact Tremors" href="#" target="_blank">Impact Tremors</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that you can get your hands on. Possibly, you have a strong stance against rares and mythics. Welcome, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="General Kreat, the Boltbringer" href="#" target="_blank">General Kreat, the Boltbringer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to the party.</p>
<p>I can tell you from experience that even in a deck where this is the only Goblin present, a table will quickly evaporate before your very eyes when this hits the battlefield.</p>
<p>A card that meshes a powerful effect with a card that isn't offensive for being uncommon. I like to put this in the 99 rather than lead a deck, but if I sat down and got the choice between the General or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Krenko, Mob Boss" href="#" target="_blank">Krenko, Mob Boss</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, it wouldn't be an easy decision to make.</p>

<p>When I first laid eyes on this card, I thought it was fake. What's a player to do with a 0/1 creature with first strike, menace, and trample? If you read further down the card, you see that it has the partner ability, and then further realize that any of the free spells, such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deflecting Swat" href="#" target="_blank">Deflecting Swat</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, are now able to be cast on turn one.</p>
<p>There is so much hidden power when your commander costs <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-0" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>.</p>
<p>Truly used for the partner ability and the low mana cost, but either way, the secret power of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh" href="#" target="_blank">Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and if someone ever suits it up with cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bloodforged Battle-Axe" href="#" target="_blank">Bloodforged Battle-Axe</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, buckle up.</p>
<h2>6.) <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dionus, Elvish Archdruid" href="#" target="_blank">Dionus, Elvish Archdruid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>A downside of being printed in a set like<span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"> as <em>Foundations Jumpstart</em>, is that people aren't familiar with</span> it. For <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dionus, Elvish Archdruid" href="#" target="_blank">Dionus, Elvish Archdruid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, this is the only reason I can fathom for its low play rate. For only being the commander of <a href="https://edhrec.com/commanders/dionus-elvish-archdruid" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1964 decks</a> and in a minuscule <a href="https://edhrec.com/cards/dionus-elvish-archdruid" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1.06% of decks</a>, this card needs more respect.</p>
<p>There're so many powerful Elf cards in the format and in <em>Magic</em> as a whole, but Dionus needs to be counted as one of the good ones.</p>
<p>Elves love to tap. Whether it be the classic <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Llanowar Elves" href="#" target="_blank">Llanowar Elves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> tapping for mana or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Timberwatch Elf" href="#" target="_blank">Timberwatch Elf</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for a pump, Dionus allows you to do it twice. Every time I've been able to cast this legend, the value is staggering.</p>

<p>This card is powerful, but it's caused me a large amount of anguish and pain. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fynn, the Fangbearer" href="#" target="_blank">Fynn, the Fangbearer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows you to take a deck full of creatures that you never want to block and force you to block them so that you don't die in a quarter of the normal time. Fynn is just so annoying because of how much of a pest he can be.</p>
<p>The deck is full of cheap creatures for the strategy (<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ambush Viper" href="#" target="_blank">Ambush Viper</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>), great protection spells to blank removal (<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Snakeskin Veil" href="#" target="_blank">Snakeskin Veil</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>), and game enders (<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Overrun" href="#" target="_blank">Overrun</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>).</p>
<p>This one drives me up a wall because I always lose to it. So any card that forces me to talk about how good it is while complaining about how often it kicks my teeth in earns a spot on the list.</p>
<h2>8.) <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Judith, the Scourge Diva" href="#" target="_blank">Judith, the Scourge Diva</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>What's a top ten list without including a good card for Aristocrats? The big downside to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Judith, the Scourge Diva" href="#" target="_blank">Judith, the Scourge Diva</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is that it doesn't trigger off tokens. But it is an uncommon, after all, so they have to put in a downside. Aside from that, Judith does buff your creatures, and when something does trigger, you can point that damage anywhere you want.</p>
<p>There's not much to say about this card other than it's great. An awesome uncommon to include in the 99 and legitimately an interesting choice to be at the head of your deck.</p>

<p>I have a deck led by <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arabella, Abandoned Doll" href="#" target="_blank">Arabella, Abandoned Doll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. It's my only deck that, when put on the table, has other players complain because of how much they hate it.</p>
<p>There's one word to describe this Toy perfectly: ludicrous. It can gain so much life and do so much damage with the trigger to the entire table. Damage to all your opponents seems to be a mainstay in uncommon commanders, and Arabella is not one to shy away from tradition.</p>
<p>It might be a token build or one that actively plays all creatures with power two or less, <a href="https://archidekt.com/decks/11645285/ara_bella_bella_eyy_eyy_eyy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">such as my deck</a>. Or even just giving Arabella a block of keywords at the cost of pumping their power, so that they're always able to get in. The deck is incredible to play and one of my absolute favorites.</p>
<p>If you haven't had the cold, dead eyes of this doll stare you down, count yourself lucky.</p>

<p>I've thrown around the word "powerful" when talking about creatures on this list. I've made claims that some of these cards might be the best to do it at the uncommon level. There can be arguments made for multiple cards on the list for which one is "the best." If any of those arguments are made for any card other than <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tatyova, Benthic Druid" href="#" target="_blank">Tatyova, Benthic Druid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>...they are wrong.</p>
<p>If you were<span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">n't there when this card was shown off for <em>Dominaria,</em> you might not understand how mind-blowing it was to see this card at uncommon</span>. Yes, the set had many legends at uncommon, but Tatyova is built differently.</p>
<p>Everything that the Simic color combination wants to do is a part of this card. It gains you life and draw you cards, and does all of it just by having you playing the game. No card on this list frightens me more than if I were to see Tatyova across the table from me. When people claim that a deck is "not that kind of (insert commander's name here) deck," they are often lying. People will try to tell you it's "not that kind of Tatyova deck," and they will also be lying — so much power at the second-lowest rarity.</p>

<p>I hope this list showed you that there can be power across the rarity levels in this great big game. With so many cards, it's no wonder that every once in a while, one is missed. Maybe one of these uncommon commanders will be the next deck you put together. Perhaps it'll prompt you to consider the broader list of uncommon options.</p>
