<p>We're diving right back into another tier list today, this time looking at every Merfolk commander. Merfolk have always been a really cool creature type to me, with support from two very different but equally fascinating planes, Lorwyn and Ixalan. They like to attack, they like to tap, and most importantly, they're very slick.</p>
<p>I think my favorite thing about these cards, however, is how different they are from each other. Each of the commanders on this list does something unique, and they're all - well, most of them - pretty interesting.</p>
<h2>Criteria for Ranking Merfolk Commanders</h2>
<p>Now before we get into it, let me explain my criteria for deciding who counts as a Merfolk commander. First of all, any commander that mentions only the creature type Merfolk in its text box is a Merfolk commander. That excludes <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Slinn Voda, the Rising Deep" href="#" target="_blank">Slinn Voda, the Rising Deep</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> because it's clearly a sea creature commander, not a Merfolk commander.</p>
<p>Then, I decided to include commanders with abilities that benefit <em>specifically</em> Merfolk. Those commanders are <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Derevi, Empyrial Tactician" href="#" target="_blank">Derevi, Empyrial Tactician</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nicanzil, Current Conductor" href="#" target="_blank">Nicanzil, Current Conductor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While those two don't mention Merfolk in their text boxes at all, they synergize extremely well with the creature type because of recurring mechanics.</p>
<p>On the flip side, I excluded commanders like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chulane, Teller of Tales" href="#" target="_blank">Chulane, Teller of Tales</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, because while they might be extremely strong Merfolk commanders, they don't support Merfolk more than any other type.</p>
<p>Enough pedantry, let's see what these Merfolk (and one Bird) can do!</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Attuma, Atlantean Warlord" href="#" target="_blank">Attuma, Atlantean Warlord</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Yikes, we're starting off with a real stinker. Attuma is the first of two Universes Beyond cards on this list, representing <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Namor the Sub-Mariner" href="#" target="_blank">Namor the Sub-Mariner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>'s arch nemesis. Unfortunately, he's not putting up much of a fight.</p>
<p>Ultimately Attuma is just a Merfolk lord, buffing them slightly and getting some card draw. Don't get me wrong, the card draw isn't bad, especially because it occurs on attack and not combat damage, but it's not exciting in the slightest. I get the feeling that Attuma was designed to be a card in Namor's deck, and that's absolutely where he belongs. Decent lord, lame commander.</p>

<p>Derevi is a commander with a very small percentage of Merfolk decks, but she's on this list because those decks are really cool. Since <em>Lorwyn</em>, Merfolk have cared a lot about tapping. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fallowsage" href="#" target="_blank">Fallowsage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stonybrook Schoolmaster" href="#" target="_blank">Stonybrook Schoolmaster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> want to tap themselves, while <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Judge of Currents" href="#" target="_blank">Judge of Currents</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> wants every Merfolk to tap.</p>
<p>Since then, Wizards has only deepened the theme with commanders like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca" href="#" target="_blank">Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, who provides a great way to tap those Merfolk safely. So you can see how Derevi is useful. Not only does she help tap and untap the more vulnerable Merfolk, she also incentivizes the many Merfolk who want to attack, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cold-Eyed Selkie" href="#" target="_blank">Cold-Eyed Selkie</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wanderwine Prophets" href="#" target="_blank">Wanderwine Prophets</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>Plus, these Derevi decks are full of neat engines utilizing <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seedborn Muse" href="#" target="_blank">Seedborn Muse</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Drumbellower" href="#" target="_blank">Drumbellower</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to get a million triggers from <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Champions of the Shoal" href="#" target="_blank">Champions of the Shoal</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and the like.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the issue with this deck is that the Merfolk who care about tapping are few and far between, and even the best of them don't do too much. Ultimately, this Merfolk deck's performance is pretty weak compared to other commanders. Still, it's a very fun and playful build.</p>

<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Emperor Mihail II" href="#" target="_blank">Emperor Mihail II</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Even though he's not the strongest, I like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Emperor Mihail II" href="#" target="_blank">Emperor Mihail II</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> a lot. He's cost effective, he gives great card advantage that's specific to Merfolk, and he supports the board well. It's nothing spectacular, but he does his job well. He's definitely better in the 99, however.</p>
<p>While it's true that he has the same flaws as Attuma, I think his abilities are a bit more fun and he's definitely stronger.</p>
<p>Tier: B</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hakbal of the Surging Soul" href="#" target="_blank">Hakbal of the Surging Soul</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Welp, here's <em>the</em> Merfolk commander. Obviously, Hakbal was created to be the #1 Merfolk commander, leading <a href="https://edhrec.com/precon/explorers-of-the-deep" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Merfolk precon</a> from <em>Lost Caverns of Ixalan</em>, and he does this job exceptionally well. He's got the card advantage, he's got the ramp, he's got... Well yeah that's what he does. Basically he's every other Simic commander but he does it exclusively for Merfolk.</p>
<p>Clearly he's great at it, leading over 5,000 Merfolk decks, but my scoring is gonna pretty heavily affected by the second most played Merfolk commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca" href="#" target="_blank">Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Kumena just makes a Merfolk deck that's much more fun and unique. Hakbal is the best Merfolk commander, but in my opinion, he's not the commander that represents them best.</p>

<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kopala, Warden of Waves" href="#" target="_blank">Kopala, Warden of Waves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>This is such an awkward card. Why does it exist? Ward had been around for two years when Kopala was released, and yet it simply makes spells and abilities cost two more. As far as I can tell, the only functional difference is that uncounterable cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Void Rend" href="#" target="_blank">Void Rend</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> don't get around Kopala like they do ward. Cool?</p>
<p>Either way, Kopala doesn't do much. He makes your Merfolk slightly harder to remove, but if opponents want to remove a Hakbal, they're just gonna pay the two extra and it's not like they were gonna <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Doom Blade" href="#" target="_blank">Doom Blade</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Merfolk Secretkeeper" href="#" target="_blank">Merfolk Secretkeeper</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> anyways. I honestly don't know if I'd even put Kopala in the 99 of a Merfolk deck.</p>
<p>Tier: D</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca" href="#" target="_blank">Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Now we're talking. In my humble opinion, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca" href="#" target="_blank">Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a perfectly designed commander. The concept is simple, the effects are powerful but not overwhelmingly so, and there's strong synergy with other Merfolk, not just generic benefits.</p>
<p>The fact that Kumena taps your Merfolk is clearly a nod to the tapping abilities from <em>Lorwyn</em> that I talked about earlier, and means that Kumena's strength goes well beyond what the text says. On top of that, the tapping also encourages going wide, which Merfolk love to do already with tokens and low cost creatures.</p>
<p>Kumena's ability to make himself unblockable really helps get the combat damage triggers that Merfolk like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seafloor Oracle" href="#" target="_blank">Seafloor Oracle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> want. And in addition to all that lovely synergy, Kumena's effects scale really well, drawing cards when the board is small, adding +1/+1 counters to a team that's wide, and growing more and more powerful as you play late game cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seedborn Muse" href="#" target="_blank">Seedborn Muse</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>I really like this commander because, unlike Hakbal, Kumena provides value that's not generic. If you changed Hakbal's text to say Faeries, he'd be a powerful Faeries commander. If you changed Kumena to say Faeries, it would just be weird. But when Kumena's at the helm of a Merfolk army, he leads a deck that's far more than just a pile of one creature type.</p>
<p>Kumena is absolutely my favorite commander on this list and an easy S tier.</p>

<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Namor the Sub-Mariner" href="#" target="_blank">Namor the Sub-Mariner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>In stark contrast to his rival, Attuma, Namor is a really awesome commander. He seems to support a rather underrated group of Merfolk, those from <em>Theros</em>, who cared about devotion and tokens. Well, there are only two Merfolk who actually care about devotion, but they're both from <em>Theros</em>, so my point stands.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Master of Waves" href="#" target="_blank">Master of Waves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in particular is one of the coolest <em>Magic</em> cards ever, creating 1/0 tokens equal to your devotion to blue. That card is right at home with Namor, who also cares about devotion and going wide. Merfolk lords will be the name of the game for this deck, with creatures like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Master of the Pearl Trident" href="#" target="_blank">Master of the Pearl Trident</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> putting in a ton of work. Then, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx" href="#" target="_blank">Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nyx Lotus" href="#" target="_blank">Nyx Lotus</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will carry us home.</p>
<p>Overall, I really like this guy and I have to applaud his design.</p>

<p>Nicanzil almost failed to make this list as she's not really a Merfolk commander, but she's here because a good portion of the cards that explore are in fact Merfolk. There's not much to say other than that she does a good job as a commander supporting an under-supported mechanic.</p>
<p>There's no real reason to go the Merfolk direction though. If we're playing lords, they're just gonna push us in a combat direction that Nicanzil doesn't really care about, and our commander would rather us just play more than Merfolk.</p>
<p>Tier: C</p>
<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Svyelun of Sea and Sky" href="#" target="_blank">Svyelun of Sea and Sky</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>Syvelun is such an interesting card, mostly because she was designed to be an homage to, or maybe an attempt to revitalize, Merfolk decks in Modern. She didn't really manage the latter, and she certainly didn't take the Commander Merfolk world by storm either.</p>
<p>I do actually like her in the 99, however. She's three mana and gives the team ward <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-1" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, making her similar to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kopala, Warden of Waves" href="#" target="_blank">Kopala, Warden of Waves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but she's also a decent attacker who can draw cards. I think that's worth a bit more than the extra mana Kopala makes opponents pay.</p>
<p>Still, not a great commander. But then again, she wasn't really meant to be.</p>

<h2><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sygg, River Guide" href="#" target="_blank">Sygg, River Guide</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>

<p>We're ending this article off with the original Merfolk commander: Sygg, River Guide. I remember watching The Professor rock him in Game Knights, and I can't help but think of him fondly. Unfortunately, power creep hasn't been kind to this old general, who doesn't quite command a game the way Hakbal or Kumena do.</p>
<p>That being said, Sygg still has some tricks up his sleeve. Even without the help of a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Heartstone" href="#" target="_blank">Heartstone</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, Sygg can hand out protection left and right, and that means unblockable, untouchable Merfolk. Merfolk strength is in their slippery nature, and their habit of wriggling through cracks to snatch a game. Sygg assists that mission with a deft hand, and still proves to be a tough catch. He may not draw a million cards, but we're in blue anyways.</p>
<p>Despite the power creep, Sygg River Guide is an excellent choice as a commander.</p>

<p>I didn't expect to like these Merfolk commanders as much as I do. Not all of them are great, but <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sygg, River Guide" href="#" target="_blank">Sygg, River Guide</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca" href="#" target="_blank">Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Namor the Sub-Mariner" href="#" target="_blank">Namor the Sub-Mariner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are all very cool cards. I'm tempted to pick up a deck and build them right now, I swear. But even cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Svyelun of Sea and Sky" href="#" target="_blank">Svyelun of Sea and Sky</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> still feel special, in a mystical, mysterious way.</p>
<p>I guess that comes with creatures that live under the sea. Merfolk are nostalgic, unique, and even powerful, with the right commander at the helm. Let me know what you think, and if there were any commanders I missed!</p>


Ranking Every Merfolk Commander On A Tier List

<h2>Merfolk History</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="https://mtg.wiki/page/Merfolk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Merfolk</a> have a long legacy of competitive and casual play in <em>Magic</em>, resulting in generations of blue-based Aggro-Control decks being nicknamed “fish” after the humanoid deep sea denizens. Ever since <em>Alpha</em>, the fishmen have been swimming past opposing defenses with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lord of Atlantis" href="#" target="_blank">Lord of Atlantis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. <a href="https://mtg.wiki/page/Tolarian_Community_College" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Professor</a> has even professed his love of the creature type on multiple occasions, most notably with his Sygg decks on the Command Zone.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Merfolk have tested the waters with a few different color combinations over the years, but always favor blue. Modern and Legacy Merfolk have historically been mono-blue, using the power and flexibility of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aether Vial" href="#" target="_blank">Aether Vial</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to drop Merfolk into play without paying mana, at instant speed, and without being cast. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The last time we were in <em>Lorwyn</em>, Jan Ruess brought a Standard Merfolk deck splashing white to Pro Tour Hollywood, including a couple <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Unsummon" href="#" target="_blank">Unsummon</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>s in the sideboard, a man after my own heart. He may have come up just short, losing in the finals, but he showed how powerful Merfolk can be with multiple Lords (creatures that provide universal boosts to all members of a given creature type).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In <em>Ixalan</em>, Merfolk began seeping into green. These Merfolk were vibrant and colorful, much more like oceanic and tropical fishpeople than <em>Lorwyn</em>’s riverbound merrow. Much like they evolve to fit different competitive environments, Merfolk have historically evolved to fit diverse locales.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Today’s <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Emperor Mihail II" href="#" target="_blank">Emperor Mihail II</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> Commander deck tech is going to attempt the tough task of uniting the diverse species of undersea humanoid life across the Multiverse.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But which build do we favor? Or can we draw inspiration from both?</span></p>

<h2>What Does <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Emperor Mihail II" href="#" target="_blank">Emperor Mihail II</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> Do?</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite being a 3/3 for three mana, the most important three about Mihail are his three abilities. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mihail lets us look at the top card of our library and cast Merfolk spells from there. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bolas&#039;s Citadel" href="#" target="_blank">Bolas&#039;s Citadel</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a </span><a href="https://edhrec.com/top/game-changers" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Game Changer</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for a reason, and limiting it to Merfolk in a Merfolk Typal deck isn’t much of a downside. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mihail also lets us pay a mana to make a 1/1 Merfolk token essentially as a <a href="https://mtg.wiki/page/Kicker" target="_blank" rel="noopener">kicker</a> ability to any Merfolk we cast, giving us a reason to make smaller Merfolk late in the game, as well as to run extra mana sources. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And is there a more entertaining type to take our opponents to school?</span></p>
<h2>Key Cards for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Emperor Mihail II" href="#" target="_blank">Emperor Mihail II</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are almost as many Merfolk as there are fish in the sea, but we’re looking for specific characteristics. We want low mana values so that we can cast multiple in a turn. If they have enters-the-battlefield (ETB) abilities, awesome. But we need them to have relevant tempo abilities, either putting multiple bodies out or hindering our opponents’ game plans.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cursecatcher" href="#" target="_blank">Cursecatcher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was part of Jan Ruess’s Standard Merfolk list, and a strong counterspell on a cheap body. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Harbinger of the Tides" href="#" target="_blank">Harbinger of the Tides</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> sneaks a removal spell onto a solid body that can gain flash, letting us hit opponents when they don’t expect it, including off of the top of our library when our commander is out.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Both <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deeproot Pilgrimage" href="#" target="_blank">Deeproot Pilgrimage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Master of Waves" href="#" target="_blank">Master of Waves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> make multiple bodies, with the Pilgrimage acting as a supplement or replacement for our commander’s Merfolk-making ability and the Master making Elementals equal to our devotion to blue, which gets quite high in a mono-blue deck.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But what do we do with all of these little bodies?</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Almost every time Merfolk are featured, they come away with a new Lord or two, starting with the iconic <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lord of Atlantis" href="#" target="_blank">Lord of Atlantis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vodalian Hexcatcher" href="#" target="_blank">Vodalian Hexcatcher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> fuses <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lord of Atlantis" href="#" target="_blank">Lord of Atlantis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cursecatcher" href="#" target="_blank">Cursecatcher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, as alluded to in the name. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are a couple of Lords who happen to not be Merfolk but are able to boost them all the same. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Paragon of Gathering Mists" href="#" target="_blank">Paragon of Gathering Mists</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Grand Architect" href="#" target="_blank">Grand Architect</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> both boost our blue creatures…which happens to be all of them!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Part of what made Legacy Merfolk so strong was the inclusion of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kira, Great Glass-Spinner" href="#" target="_blank">Kira, Great Glass-Spinner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which counters the first spell or ability targeting a creature each turn. Why is this relevant? Because this granted the Merfolk a layer of protection.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lost in the Maze" href="#" target="_blank">Lost in the Maze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives our tapped creatures hexproof, while <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cryptic Command" href="#" target="_blank">Cryptic Command</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has several useful modes, including countering a board wipe. The Command was also part of Ruess’s Merfolk deck, tapping down opposing boards to enable an all-out attack (alpha strike).</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Nykthos providing a burst of mana is nothing new, but being able to use that mana to cast spells off the top of our library and to make additional bodies with whatever extra mana we have lying around is a bit different from how other decks use it. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Riptide Laboratory" href="#" target="_blank">Riptide Laboratory</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> bounces Wizards, which a lot of our Merfolk happen to be. This lets us make additional bodies with our commander and re-use ETBs.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Like with other small creature (weenie) decks, our game plan consists of making a wide battlefield of small bodies, making those bodies bigger with Lords, and then casting backbreaking spells to invalidate our opponents’ defenses.</span></p>

Building Merfolk Typal With Emperor Mihail II

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ahh yes, Merfolk. "Wet Elves," if you will. One of <em>Magic</em>'s most beloved creature types, and one of their most powerful, just got a brand new commander that's coming out in 2026. I might not know much about Marvel's Namor, but I can say for certain that <em>Magic</em>'s Namor is one of the best Merfolk commanders we've seen since <em>The Lost Caverns of Ixalan</em>.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-1" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, Namor is a flying */4, and his power is equal to the number of Merfolk we've got on board. And whenever we cast a noncreature spell, we make a 1/1 Merfolk creature token for each <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> in that spell's mana cost. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Namor may seem relatively tame on the surface, but he's a Voltron threat all on his own. When combined with his ability to clog the board with tricksy Merfolk, this commander sure makes a splash.</span></p>
<p>Although Namor is a strong, evasive creature that can end combats in just a few turns, he's not the focus of our game plan. We'll control the board, and then buff up our Merfolk to swing in for victory. Namor makes more 1/1s than most of our opponents will be able to deal with, and those creature tokens will be how we aim to win the game.</p>
<p>I've built a strong <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/edhrec-guide-to-commander-brackets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bracket 3</a> list, and a cheap version of this list is possible if you cut just two or three pricey cards.</p>
<p>Let's get brewing, and see what Namor can do!</p>
<h2>Key Cards for Namor</h2>
<p>Merfolk have been a part of <em>Magic</em> since 1993, so there's a long history of powerful synergies to draw upon. Anthem effects like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lord of Atlantis" href="#" target="_blank">Lord of Atlantis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Master of the Pearl Trident" href="#" target="_blank">Master of the Pearl Trident</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are classics, and they work even better alongside newer releases like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vodalian Hexcatcher" href="#" target="_blank">Vodalian Hexcatcher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Attuma, Atlantean Warlord" href="#" target="_blank">Attuma, Atlantean Warlord</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>I'm particularly excited about Attuma, who makes <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seafloor Oracle" href="#" target="_blank">Seafloor Oracle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> seem like a relic. My favorite anthem effect, though, is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mindspring Merfolk" href="#" target="_blank">Mindspring Merfolk</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Although it can only be used once, it's a fantastic finisher that we can make use of when it's time to close out the game.</p>

<p>We've also got a small collection of what I'll call "mean" creatures that provide repeatable interaction for our opponents' game plans. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Silvergill Douser" href="#" target="_blank">Silvergill Douser</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can shrink our opponents' best attackers over and over again, ensuring that they can't connect with their most powerful creatures. We'll usually have enough Merfolk to reduce an opposing creature's power to zero, which is a pretty sweet ability for this two-drop.</p>
<p>Then there's <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Harbinger of the Seas" href="#" target="_blank">Harbinger of the Seas</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which will pose a serious issue to our opponents who chose to play multicolored decks against us. It'll likely get removed pretty quickly, as most Commander decks run a bevy of nonbasic lands, but it can slow everyone else at the table down by a turn or two.</p>
<p>Finally, the meanest of the bunch: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lullmage Mentor" href="#" target="_blank">Lullmage Mentor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I almost feel bad for including this card in the list, as this Wizard can lock down the game easily. Paired with Namor, we'll usually have enough Merfolk on the board to counter at least one spell per turn rotation. The threat of activation can prevent opponents from even attempting to cast their scariest spell, meaning Lullmage Mentor is even stronger than it appears at first blush.</p>

<p>To find these powerful creatures more consistently, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Merrow Harbinger" href="#" target="_blank">Merrow Harbinger</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seahunter" href="#" target="_blank">Seahunter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> have found their way into the 99. Seahunter is actually part of a cycle of cards that tutor creatures of a specific type to the battlefield, and I've not seen any of these cards in person.</p>
<p>We'll be making a lot of tokens, often in bunches of three or four, so <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Moonlit Meditation" href="#" target="_blank">Moonlit Meditation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can be extremely powerful. If we manage to enchant a card like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Merfolk Sovereign" href="#" target="_blank">Merfolk Sovereign</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with this Aura, we can generate a whole bunch of anthems to power up our board. Moonlit Meditation is a recent release, and I've been trying to find the perfect home for this unique card since it was first spoiled. I think this may be one of the best fits I've found yet.</p>
<p>We can use all the tokens we make to convoke out a huge <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Transcendent Message" href="#" target="_blank">Transcendent Message</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, creating four 1/1 Merfolk and drawing a ton of cards. This spell can even be cast for "free" if we've got enough creatures on the battlefield, letting us spend our mana on interaction before tapping down our Merfolk to draw a whole bunch of cards.</p>
<p>Similarly, we can tap our creatures for another powerful noncreature spell: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Secret of Bloodbending" href="#" target="_blank">Secret of Bloodbending</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. This new sorcery does a very good <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mindslaver" href="#" target="_blank">Mindslaver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> impression while also making four Merfolk if Namor is on the battlefield when we cast it.</p>

<p>To ensure that our commander works as well as possible we've got some spells in our list specifically for their high <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> pip count.</p>
<p>First up is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fated Infatuation" href="#" target="_blank">Fated Infatuation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, an above-rate clone spell that also gives us some valuable card selection. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Reenact the Crime" href="#" target="_blank">Reenact the Crime</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has also earned a spot. I like to include at least one piece of graveyard hate in each of my Commander decks, and this instant is my go-to for color combinations that don't include <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-w" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-g" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, or <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-b" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>. Those colors have access to more consistent, and lower-cost, anti-graveyard tech. But, Reenact the Crime is far from a bad option in this spellslinging-centric list.</p>
<p>I also wanted to shout out a pair of high-cost, high-impact sorceries: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mnemonic Deluge" href="#" target="_blank">Mnemonic Deluge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sorcerous Squall" href="#" target="_blank">Sorcerous Squall</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. We've got a few ways to fill up graveyards, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mental Note" href="#" target="_blank">Mental Note</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thought Scour" href="#" target="_blank">Thought Scour</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, so these spells will usually change the game substantially when they resolve. Many of these spells likely can't see play outside of mono-<span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> decks, as their restrictive mana costs make them unattractive for pilots that play with more than one color.</p>

<h2>How Does This Namor Deck Win?</h2>
<p>Merfolk creature tokens don't have any inherent evasion. How can we ensure that we're able to connect with our opponents? Well, one-sided wipes like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Raise the Palisade" href="#" target="_blank">Raise the Palisade</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can clear a path for us quite well. Outside of dedicated typal decks, Merfolk are quite rare. So, for just <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-4" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span>, we'll be able to get rid of almost all of our opponents' creatures while ours remain untouched.</p>
<p>There's also <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Summon: Leviathan" href="#" target="_blank">Summon: Leviathan</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While this Saga creature leaves a few more of our opponents' creatures on the board, it's also a 6/6 creature that lets us draw a whole heap of cards with its second and third chapters. We can also lock down the board with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Junk Winder" href="#" target="_blank">Junk Winder</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, one of the few cards with affinity for tokens!</p>

<p>But if our token-based game plan doesn't work out, we can always attack our opponents with Namor. He'll get up above seven power quite quickly, meaning that we'll only need three hits to knock a player out of the game entirely. Other large creatures, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="River Sneak" href="#" target="_blank">River Sneak</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, can serve as an alternative path to victory.</p>
<p>Plus, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wanderwine Prophets" href="#" target="_blank">Wanderwine Prophets</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> lets us chain extra turns easily. Assuming we're able to cast at least one noncreature spell with a <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> pip per turn, we string together as many turns as we please.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are a few more cards that I didn't get to chat about earlier that I want to acknowledge now. One of my favorite creatures, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Triton Wavebreaker" href="#" target="_blank">Triton Wavebreaker</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, just so happens to be a Merfolk! Bestow is a fantastic mechanic, both in flavor and function, and this enchantment creature can turn Namor into an even scarier Voltron threat. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Next up, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kindred Discovery" href="#" target="_blank">Kindred Discovery</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> might be one of the best cards in this deck. It makes two Merfolk on cast, and will let us draw tons of cards as the game goes on. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The duo of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deeproot Pilgrimage" href="#" target="_blank">Deeproot Pilgrimage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deeproot Waters" href="#" target="_blank">Deeproot Waters</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will give us a constant stream of 1/1 Merfolk. The tokens they make even have hexproof, making them that much stronger!</span></p>

<p>Namor is such a good commander because he provides us with a substantial reward for taking normal game actions. We already want to cast a whole bunch of spells, usually ones that have a few <span class="mana-container-container"><span class="mana-container"><i class="ms ms-cost ms-u" style="margin-left: inherit !important;"></i></span></span> pips in them, and our commander provides us with disposable creatures when we do so. Plus, there's lots of anthems available from this creature type's broad support over the years, meaning that we can turn those simple 1/1s into potent attackers with ease.</p>
