Building Nathan Drake, Treasure Hunter on a Budget

The Uncharted games first hit the scene back in 2007 and changed the action-adventure video game genre forever. Front and center for the series is none other than Nathan Drake, everyone's favorite puzzle-solving scoundrel.

Soon we'll be able to bring Uncharted into the world of Magic: The Gathering, as Wizards of the Coast has included Nathan Drake, Treasure HunterNathan Drake, Treasure Hunter in the upcoming PlayStation Secret Lair Superdrop, which is scheduled to launch on October 27th.

Nathan Drake, Treasure Hunter

Just by looking at the effects on his card, we can tell that he has a certain proclivity for taking what other people possess. To prepare for that Secret Lair release, I’ve put together a full budget deck designed to take our opponent’s best cards.

Our Quick-Witted Commander: Nathan Drake, Treasure Hunter

For only three mana, Nathan Drake, Treasure HunterNathan Drake, Treasure Hunter gives us access to the top card of everyone's library when he attacks. With that in mind, the deck is primarily focused on two main goals: swinging with our commander, and payoffs for stealing other people's spells.

To assist with that, we have a strong evasion package that'll allow Nathan to safely attack. Once he's suited up with some of those great Auras or Equipment, we can then focus on casting our opponent's best spells off the top of their library.

Also, don't overlook the fact that this commander exiles our top card too, offering more ways to further our game plan.

If you've already planned on picking up the Secret Lair, don't fret, because this deck would only cost you about $40 (using TCGPlayer pricing).

With all that out of the way, let's take a look at some of the cards that make this deck tick.

Key Cards for Nathan Drake

Evasive Treasure Hunting

Aqueous Form
Whispersilk Cloak
Aether Tunnel
  • Aqueous FormAqueous Form: This may be the best card in the whole list. Not only does it give evasion to our commander, but it allows us to sculpt the top of our deck when we attack.
  • Whispersilk CloakWhispersilk Cloak: Nathan will likely become a lightning rod for removal, so slapping on this Equipment ensures that we can keep swinging freely and safely.
  • Aether TunnelAether Tunnel: The small power buff this Aura offers is nice, however the real star with this spell is the fact that spending only two mana will guarantee we don't have to worry about blockers anymore.
Security Bypass
Trailblazer's Boots
Mask of Riddles
  • Security BypassSecurity Bypass: Sure, there'll be some games where we have a wider board of creatures, but most of the time, our commander attacking alone shouldn't be too big of an issue.
  • Trailblazer's BootsTrailblazer's Boots: This card brings us one of my favorite niche abilities in the game, nonbasic landwalk, which is incredible for the deck. Plus, wouldn't those boots look so perfect on Nathan Drake?
  • Mask of RiddlesMask of Riddles: Here's an Equipment that feels like it comes right from an Uncharted game. Fear plus card draw makes this an excellent fit for the deck.
Fly
Zephyr Boots
Fae Flight
  • FlyFly: Here's an Aura that tells you exactly what it does in the title. Also, venturing into the dungeon feels too flavorful not too include at least one instance of it in the deck.
  • Agent of the Shadow ThievesAgent of the Shadow Thieves: This Background is incredible for our strategy. Not only does it offer up protection for our commander, but giving deathtouch to a first striker is a great way to kill blockers before they have any time to hit back.
  • Fae FlightFae Flight: Here's one of my favorite protection effects that was hidden in the bulk of a much-maligned set. If you're making this deck, it might be time to look through your collection for this one.

Theft With Benefits

Grenzo, Havoc Raiser
Party Thrasher
Vaan, Street Thief
  • Grenzo, Havoc RaiserGrenzo, Havoc Raiser: Since this list is filled with ways to offer evasion to our board, Grenzo assists with stealing even more cards when our creatures deal combat damage to opponents.
  • Party ThrasherParty Thrasher: If we happen to hit a particularly useful noncreature spell off of someone's library, we'll now have even more assistance with casting that card thanks to this Lizard Wizard.
  • Vaan, Street ThiefVaan, Street Thief: Not only does this creature give us more access to the other decks at the table, but it also buffs up our commander, who just so happens to be a Rogue.
Bloodsoaked Insight
Etali, Primal Storm
Outrageous Robbery
  • Bloodsoaked InsightBloodsoaked Insight: Yes, this sorcery lets us cast other players' spells, but it's also just a dual land that assists with fixing our mana when we need it.
  • Etali, Primal StormEtali, Primal Storm: Here's an absolute classic Commander card that shines even brighter in this 99, since we can cast the spells it exiles for free. This is what an evolved form of Nathan Drake's ability looks like.
  • Outrageous RobberyOutrageous Robbery: I love effects that give access to a big chunk of cards all at once, and in this deck, taking those from our opponents is exactly what we want to be striving for.
Xanathar, Guild Kingpin
Plargg and Nassari
Laughing Jasper Flint
  • Xanathar, Guild KingpinXanathar, Guild Kingpin Since we'll already be casting spells that belong to other players, we might find ourselves basically playing someone else's deck. So, why not pick one opponent for a turn and just continue playing their cards?
  • Plargg and NassariPlargg and Nassari: This kicks our turns off right by stealing a couple spells for free. Yes, someone can block us from casting what we want, but with a little politics, we could work together with someone else at the table to ensure we're deploying what we need.
  • Laughing Jasper FlintLaughing Jasper Flint: If Nathan made his way to the Magic Multiverse, I could see him running into a fellow Rogue like Jasper during his travels. We can get a glimpse of what that team-up would look like in this deck, as they work together to enlist our opponents' creatures into their crew.
Don Andres, the Renegade
Gonti, Night Minister
Heartless Conscription
  • Don Andres, the RenegadeDon Andres, the Renegade: Since we're already casting spells that don't belong to us, this Vampire Pirate is the ultimate payoff for all that pillaging.
  • Gonti, Night MinisterGonti, Night Minister: If the rest of the table wants to get in on casting other people's spells, Gonti can assist with that. Luckily for us, our deck is well suited to take the most advantage out of that effect.
  • Heartless ConscriptionHeartless Conscription: Pairing a sweeper with a way to cast creatures that aren't ours is an amazing combination for this list. Even though it might be expensive to cast, this could set us up to take over the game on our next turn.

Versatile Removal

Izzet Charm
Rakdos Charm
Dimir Charm
  • Izzet CharmIzzet Charm: Versatility with removal in this deck is paramount, because if we hit interaction off the top of our library, we want to have several uses for that spell. This Charm not only gives us a counter, but also card selection and burn if we need it.
  • Rakdos CharmRakdos Charm: Here's one of the biggest gotcha cards in Commander, because all the modes on this instant can be blowouts against the right deck.
  • Dimir CharmDimir Charm: While this Charm is one of the lesser played ones in the cycle, it does have a sneaky mode that works perfectly here. That final option allows us to sculpt the top of an opponent's library, giving us access to whichever card is best for our commander to exile when he attacks.
Abrade
Feed the Swarm
Prismari Command
  • AbradeAbrade: This is a staple in the format for a reason. It doesn't matter if we hit a creature with that burn effect, or snipe a pivotal artifact, this card can simply save you in games.
  • Feed the SwarmFeed the Swarm: Whether we remove a creature or an enchantment with this sorcery, the fact that it could be cast at instant speed because of our commander makes it even stronger in the deck.
  • Prismari CommandPrismari Command: This is one of the best cards in this list. There's almost always a great combination of effects to pair together whenever we resolve this spell.
