<h1>Cats and Potatoes</h1>
<p>Hello fellow brewer, and welcome back to <em>Brew for your Buck</em>, where we swap out the top 10 most expensive cards in a deck with 10 budget cards that add a unique twist. Well, I couldn’t resist it any longer, we need to feature <em>The</em> <em>Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth </em>(LTR) cards. I am a HUGE <em>Lord of the Rings</em> fan and completely <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Decimate" href="#" target="_blank">decimated</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> my wallet when the set was released. When I say huge fan: my best man quoted Gandalf in his speech at my wedding. This set did it all for me.</p>
<p>We also haven’t done a combo package <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/brew-for-your-buck-kolld-steel/">in a while</a>, and our largest <em>Universes Beyond</em> installment came with a new best friend for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Protean Hulk" href="#" target="_blank">Protean Hulk</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Samwise Gamgee" href="#" target="_blank">Samwise Gamgee</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($2.09). In conjunction with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cauldron Familiar" href="#" target="_blank">Cauldron Familiar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($2.94) and a sac outlet, we can win the game on the spot. This even showed up in the Pro Tour not too long ago, which could be why Cauldron Familiar has been seeing an upward price spike lately. Anyway, I didn’t pay attention to cEDH during the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flash" href="#" target="_blank">Flash</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>-Hulk days, but apparently it used to be pretty busted. The idea was to use <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flash" href="#" target="_blank">Flash</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to cheat in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Protean Hulk" href="#" target="_blank">Protean Hulk</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, then when it sacrificed itself, you can go find a combination of creatures <a href="https://commanderspellbook.com/search/?q=protean%20hulk">that win the game</a>. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Protean Hulk" href="#" target="_blank">Protean Hulk</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has seen less play of late, but that’s ok, because it’s still a little expensive dollars-wise, and we don’t want to bother getting it out of the deck anyway. Instead, we look to a commander that does a similar thing, but from the graveyard:</p>

<p><em>Mutating</em> <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nethroi, Apex of Death" href="#" target="_blank">Nethroi</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will let us do a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Protean Hulk" href="#" target="_blank">Protean Hulk</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> imitation once we get all the pieces in the bin, or just provide us with an insane amount of value after milling, discarding, and dredging our deck away. We have some of the usual staples making up the bulk of Nethroi’s $228.08 list, so here’s what we’ll remove:</p>

<p>As we’ve come to expect with three color decks, the mana base gets pretty expensive (though I have a sleeper for you down below) so replacing the lands that would otherwise make the above list would save an additional $77.09, bringing the total to <strong>$146.76</strong>.</p>
<h2>Additions</h2>
<h3>Combo Pieces</h3>

<p>First, let me outline the combo: when everything enters the battlefield, Sam will make a Food for each one, and the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nethroi, Apex of Death" href="#" target="_blank">Cat</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will drain our opponents. We sacrifice <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cauldron Familiar" href="#" target="_blank">Cauldron Familiar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to our sac outlet, and then sacrifice a Food to reanimate it. Sam n' Cat trigger again, and then repeat for the win. In cEDH, this is all tutor-able straight onto the battlefield with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Protean Hulk" href="#" target="_blank">Protean Hulk</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and you can even bring <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Grand Abolisher" href="#" target="_blank">Grand Abolisher</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> out with the combo pieces to ensure no one can interact. Pretty awesome! Even more awesome, the deck already contains some of the best sacrifice outlets (<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Viscera Seer" href="#" target="_blank">Viscera Seer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Carrion Feeder" href="#" target="_blank">Carrion Feeder</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>) and a similar loop with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Reveillark" href="#" target="_blank">Reveillark</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Karmic Guide" href="#" target="_blank">Karmic Guide</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, so we have a built in back up plan as well. We can even throw in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Saffi Eriksdotter" href="#" target="_blank">Saffi Eriksdotter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.94) to make this line even more efficient.</p>

<h3>Set up</h3>
<p>Of course, since we aren’t using <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Protean Hulk" href="#" target="_blank">Protean Hulk</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, we’ll need ways to get our combo pieces into the graveyard. We have some good ways already via <em>Dredge</em>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Death&#039;s Oasis" href="#" target="_blank">Death&#039;s Oasis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Greater Good" href="#" target="_blank">Greater Good</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, etc. Sadly, we had to remove <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Buried Alive" href="#" target="_blank">Buried Alive</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> due to the budget constraints, but we can add some cards with similar effects like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jarad&#039;s Orders" href="#" target="_blank">Jarad&#039;s Orders</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.74), <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Unmarked Grave" href="#" target="_blank">Unmarked Grave</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.77), and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fauna Shaman" href="#" target="_blank">Fauna Shaman</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.10). The first two will tutor the combo pieces directly into the graveyard, while Fauna Shaman allows us to pitch them from our hand in exchange for another value piece, some ramp, or any of our other utility creatures. Lastly, we can add a BFYB classic: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mausoleum Secrets" href="#" target="_blank">Mausoleum Secrets</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.15). I'm going to keep plugging this card. It's just so sweet in a heavy creature/graveyard deck.</p>

<h3>Graveyard Value</h3>
<p>While we're preparing for our big combo turn, we can spend that time eeking out extra value from our graveyard. For this, I was really looking for cards that offered value just by being in the graveyard. First up, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Genesis" href="#" target="_blank">Genesis</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.34) which can buy us back a creature every turn, and ups our creature count for additional synergies. In the same vein, we have the recently reprinted <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Glory" href="#" target="_blank">Glory</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.12). We can use Glory offensively during a big attack, or defensively to protect our board. Using your graveyard as a second hand is something newer players can take some time to discover, and just having these<a href="https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?type=+[incarnation]%7C%7Csubtype=+[incarnation]"> Incarnations</a> sitting there is a great way to educate!</p>
<p>Finally, I've been waiting and waiting to get one of my favorite cards into a deck, and I think this is the one. I present to you... <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Riftstone Portal" href="#" target="_blank">Riftstone Portal</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.11). While it sits in your graveyard it allows ALL of the lands you have on the battlefield to tap for green and white. It's an easy thing to discard or sacrifice for value, and even taps for colorless AND comes into play untapped! I've never wanted a cycle to be completed more than this one. Imagine this thing in Golgari colors? It’s what dreams are made of!</p>

Brew For Your Buck - Stick 'Em in a Stew

<p>Hello fellow brewer, and welcome back to <em>Brew for your Buck</em>, where we swap out the top 10 most expensive cards in a deck with 10 budget cards that add a unique twist. This time, I want to take a look at a deck I was toying around with last year but haven't pulled the trigger to build just yet. Gruul is a tough color combination for me to get excited about. Looking at the most popular themes for the color pair, none inspire me much besides <em>Landfall</em>, but I've already sold my soul to the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Gitrog Monster" href="#" target="_blank">almighty amphibian</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I finally found some inspiration though when looking for a non-Izzet spellslinging commander:</p>

<p>Wort asks for a deck with a balance of creatures and spells (not unlike our <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/brew-for-your-buck-tap-down-flashback/">Katilda and Lier deck</a>), which can be difficult to do. Fortunately, her average list is filled with a bunch of spells that make creatures à la <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dragon Fodder" href="#" target="_blank">Dragon Fodder</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Because of this, we see a lot of token payoff with her, but yet another token deck is not very inspiring (at least not to me). The inspiring part is what those tokens do with Wort on the battlefield: copying our spells with <em>Conspire.</em> There are plenty of generically powerful spells to copy in the deck already, but this is <em>Brew for your Buck</em>! We want a <strong><em>theme</em></strong>, which you may have already guessed from my not-so-subtle title.</p>
<p>That's right, we're copying X spells. There are a few sprinkled in already, but we're going to really lean into them today. Once the X spell is on the stack, copying it means whatever the value of X is, essentially doubling your invested mana. Another bonus with this deck is that the original list only costs $151, so we have an excellent chance of getting it below $100.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stomping Ground" href="#" target="_blank">Stomping Ground</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is the only land that would make this list, so swapping that out (<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dwarven Mine" href="#" target="_blank">Dwarven Mine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.23) is a great option since it usually comes with a creature) brings our total savings to <strong>$98.66</strong>.</p>
<h2>Additions</h2>
<p>There are plenty of X spells in the game to add, and we've seen recent inklings of more support for the archetype outside of just <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rosheen Meanderer" href="#" target="_blank">Rosheen Meanderer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<h3>Xtreme Weather</h3>
<p>One thing I quickly noticed about these X spells is that many of them depict natural disasters if not a full on e(x)tinction level event. We already have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Comet Storm" href="#" target="_blank">Comet Storm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, so let's add its friends <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Meteor Swarm" href="#" target="_blank">Meteor Swarm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.09) and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Meteor Blast" href="#" target="_blank">Meteor Blast</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.28). Copying either with even a little bit invested into the X should kill pretty much any creatures or planeswalkers you need, and the latter can even hit players. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hurricane" href="#" target="_blank">Hurricane</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.20) is a classic, and cheesing out a win with a green burn spell (that you can copy) is even more hilarious. It won't hit any of our creatures or tokens since none of them have flying, but it <em>will</em> hit our life total, so pick your timing carefully unless you want to draw the game.</p>

<h3>Xtra Value</h3>
<p>This deck e(x)cels at trading up on resources, generating effective card advantage by copying spells with many targets. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="By Force" href="#" target="_blank">By Force</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.56) is my favorite budget replacement for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vandalblast" href="#" target="_blank">Vandalblast</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and it gets even better here. There are always artifacts lying around, and picking off the critical ones can go along way to furthering your gameplan or currying some political favor with the rest of the table. Besides <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Regrowth" href="#" target="_blank">Regrowth</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, this deck has basically no recursion, something I always want more of in my decks. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Reap the Past" href="#" target="_blank">Reap the Past</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.34) is not ideal for grabbing something specific out of your graveyard, but once copied it does a pretty good impression of drawing you a fresh hand.</p>

<h3><strong>Xponential Tokens</strong></h3>
<p>While we're focused on X spells for our budget package, we can't ignore the fact that our token generation is also integral to the deck's plan. We already have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arasta of the Endless Web" href="#" target="_blank">Arasta</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, so we can add essentially another copy with our "not exactly budget" card: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dragonlair Spider" href="#" target="_blank">Dragonlair Spider</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($3.04). Why make tokens ourselves when our opponents can do the work for us? The Spider is a red AND green creature, which are high value since they don't limit spells we can <em>Conspire</em>. We also get <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tears of Rage" href="#" target="_blank">Tears of Rage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.14), a relatively unknown instant that screams alpha strike. Swing with all but two of your creatures, cast and copy it, and kill the table before the end step trigger even happens. It also has an X in the rules text so it kind of counts for the theme.</p>

<h3><strong>Mana Xcceleration</strong></h3>
<p>We'll wrap up with some ways to generate more mana. After all, we have a six mana commander and we want to dump as much value into the X on all of these spells as possible. An obvious addition is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nexos" href="#" target="_blank">Nexos</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.33), a creature from the <em>Warhammer 40k</em> decks that goes well with our mana base full of basic lands. In the same vein, Elementalist's Palette ($1.61) is another obvious inclusion here, helping us amplify successive X spells in later turns. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Animist&#039;s Awakening" href="#" target="_blank">Animist&#039;s Awakening</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.14) goes perfectly here too, dumping a ton of lands onto the battlefield, and with so many instants and sorceries in the deck, we'll easily turn on <em>Spell Mastery</em> and get to untap them as well.</p>

<p>As e(x)pected, we dropped the deck down to way under $100. One gameplay note: copying the spells with <em>Conspire</em> doesn't cast them, so your <em>Storm</em> cards are not going to get better the more spells you copy in a turn. However, if you use <em>Conspire</em> to copy the original <em>Storm</em> spell, that will work the way you want it to, essentially doubling the <em>Storm</em> count without having to cast anything.</p>

<p>Hello, fellow brewer, and welcome back to <em>Brew for your Buck</em>, where we swap out the top 10 most expensive cards in a deck with 10 budget cards that add a unique twist. The last few articles in the series focused on some commanders that have been around for a while, so I wanted to go with something new to get a bit experimental. Newer commanders have way less data on EDHREC to inform deckbuilding decisions, but maybe we can find some cutting edge tech for our <em>March of the Machine </em>(<em>MOM</em>) team-up:</p>

<p>These two lead us to an interesting balancing act for building the deck. On one hand, we want Humans to enable Katilda and Lier's trigger, and on the other we want instants and sorceries to target with said trigger. I'm sure it would take some playtesting to figure out the perfect ratio between the two, but for now we'll try to keep the balance. This deck also reminds me of the <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/brew-for-your-buck-fish-flash/">sea monster flash deck</a> that we looked at a while ago, with flash-enablers to let us cast our Humans at instant speed. There's plenty of expensive cards in the deck too, with the total price coming in at $412.39.</p>

<p>This time, our mana base makes up a huge portion of the total cost of the deck, which is to be expected given it's a three-color deck. Swapping any lands that are pricier than <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Three Visits" href="#" target="_blank">Three Visits</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in the list above would bring our total savings to <strong>$317.22</strong>.</p>
<h2>Additions</h2>
<p>One thing that's certain (no matter how you build this deck) is that it will be mana-<em><strong>hangry</strong></em>. Not only do you need mana to cast the Humans, but you also need even more mana to cast the flashback spells. My first thought was "free Humans!", but believe it or not, there isn't a single one in the game. There are plenty of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Force of Will" href="#" target="_blank">free spells</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but most of those cost way more than what we would consider for a budget option. But what if there was a way to reduce the cost of our Humans AND spells, and sometimes even make them free? What if that way just got a bunch of new cards, also from <em>March of the Machine</em>? That's right, it's <em>Convoke</em>!</p>
<h3>Convoking Humans</h3>
<p>Let's start by looking at Humans that benefit or enable <em>Convoke</em>. First up, one that I really like is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fallaji Wayfarer" href="#" target="_blank">Fallaji Wayfarer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.24). The Wayfarer is an awesome cost-reducer for 12 of our spells in the final list, including our commander, and that first line of really weird text allows it to tap itself for pay any of the colored pips in those mana costs. The next entry in the "X-Y-of-Eos" saga is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Knight-Errant of Eos" href="#" target="_blank">Knight-Errant of Eos</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.77), which can draw us up to two more Humans when cheated onto the battlefield with its inherent <em>Convoke.</em> Of note, our creature curve tops out at five with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kyler, Sigardian Emissary" href="#" target="_blank">Kyler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, so we should be able to grab every creature in the deck if the Knight-Errant is fully <em>Convoked</em>.</p>

<p>Our next two Humans don't reference <em>Convoke</em> specifically, but definitely help us use the ability. Each time we cast one of those instants and sorceries from our graveyard, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thalia&#039;s Geistcaller" href="#" target="_blank">Thalia&#039;s Geistcaller</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.09) will make us a Spirit to help <em>Convoke</em> out the next thing we cast. Making a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mox Pearl" href="#" target="_blank">Mox Pearl</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> that can also attack or block each time we cast a spell seems like a good deal to me. Since we have his newer card in the list already, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Raff Capashen, Ship&#039;s Mage" href="#" target="_blank">Raff Capashen, Ship&#039;s Mage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.15) is another way to let us cast our 16 Historic spells at instant speed, and he taps for two different colors of mana for <em>Convoke.</em> Finally, we're going to be spending a lot of time tapping our creatures, so let's add some ways to untap them. Preferably Human ways, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Village Bell-Ringer" href="#" target="_blank">Village Bell-Ringer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.11).</p>

<h3><strong>Convoking Spells</strong></h3>
<p>Now let's look at the noncreature spells. First on our list is another new <em>MOM </em>card that seems perfect for this deck: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Complete the Circuit" href="#" target="_blank">Complete the Circuit</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.11) not only copies the next spell we cast, but more importantly allows us to cast <strong>every</strong> sorcery during the turn at instant speed. All of a sudden, we can go off right before we untap and get ready for a lethal turn. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Return to the Ranks" href="#" target="_blank">Return to the Ranks</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.39) adds some more recursion to the deck, and it can bring 13 of our creatures (all Humans) back to the battlefield in one shot.</p>

<p>But what if our spells don't have <em>Convoke</em>? Well, a new entry in the line of sweet three-mana mana rocks is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wand of the Worldsoul" href="#" target="_blank">Wand of the Worldsoul</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($2.24). I'll admit it's a bit slow, but after you untap with it, you can give any spell you want <em>Convoke</em>, from your Humans to spells; heck, even your other artifacts. We can also add an untapper here, this time an instant, so we can flash it back to squeeze even more mana out of our creatures. There are a lot of these, but we'll go with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="To Arms!" href="#" target="_blank">To Arms!</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.92) since it's cheap, draws us a card, and has an exclamation point in the card name.</p>

<h3>Casting from the 'yard</h3>
<p>There is one really sweet interaction I want to point out with a small subset of cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sevinne&#039;s Reclamation" href="#" target="_blank">Sevinne&#039;s Reclamation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Katilda and Lier" href="#" target="_blank">K&amp;L&#039;s</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ability grants the targeted card flashback, but for its normal mana cost, so we can take advantage of the "cast from a graveyard" bonus without paying an even more expensive flashback cost, a trick I use with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Increasing Ambition" href="#" target="_blank">Increasing Ambition</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in my <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer" href="#" target="_blank">Oskar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> deck. Since <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sevinne&#039;s Reclamation" href="#" target="_blank">Sevinne&#039;s Reclamation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is already in the list, I thought we could finalize our budget package with the white card from the "Increasing" cycle, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Increasing Devotion" href="#" target="_blank">Increasing Devotion</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.08). Ten Humans for five mana? Yes, please!</p>

<h2>Wrap Up and Savings</h2>
<p>Before we get into the savings with our specific choices, I want to mention that there are a zillion ways to take this theme even further. You could lean harder into multicolored cards to help enable <em>Convoke,</em> like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hero of Precinct One" href="#" target="_blank">Hero of Precinct One</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Knight of New Alara" href="#" target="_blank">Knight of New Alara</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Glass of the Guildpact" href="#" target="_blank">Glass of the Guildpact</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I also looked at <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vitalize" href="#" target="_blank">Vitalize</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as a utility untapper, which can act as a crazy ritual in conjunction with <em>Convoke</em>. And finally, there are a bunch of serviceable <em>Convoke </em>spells, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sundering Vitae" href="#" target="_blank">Sundering Vitae</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nissa&#039;s Expedition" href="#" target="_blank">Nissa&#039;s Expedition</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, that could potentially be cast for free from your hand and from the graveyard. This one really got the brewing juices flowing! Anyways, on to the savings:</p>

<p>Hello, fellow brewer, and welcome back to <em>Brew for your Buck</em>, where we swap out the top 10 most expensive cards in a deck with 10 budget cards that add a unique twist. This time, we're building around our first mono-colored commander of the series! I had no idea this card existed as I was mashing the "random commander" button on EDHREC in search for inspiration.</p>

<p>Turns out, the dude that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kumano Faces Kakkazan" href="#" target="_blank">faced Kakkazan</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has a really cool card all to himself! Kumano lends himself to being built around turning your mana into damage, with lots of ways to amplify that damage to make the most of the two-mana investment. On the flip side, we have a bunch of ways in the deck to grant him deathtouch, so get him equipped and ping your opponents' creatures into sweet oblivion. And it is oblivion too, since we get the exile clause built in to stop all of the graveyard shenanigans. Kumano's average deck comes at an insanely high $451.97, especially for a mono-colored deck. Our cuts feature some mono-red staples and a few niche cards for our Master Yamabushi (anyone know what that is?).</p>

<p>Only one land would have made it into this list. I'm glad we don't cut lands anymore, because <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle" href="#" target="_blank">Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($21.60) is one of my absolute favorites. If you did just replace it with a basic, though, it would bring our total savings to <strong>$314.15.</strong></p>
<h2>Additions</h2>
<p>As I mentioned before, I had a bit of writer's block to come up with a deck for this one, but as soon as I saw Kumano it hit me like a freight train: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stuffy Doll" href="#" target="_blank">Stuffy Doll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>s. Not only can we wreak havoc on our opponents' creatures but we can also ping our own for max value!</p>
<h3>Gobs and Dolls</h3>
<p>We'll start with the namesake card, of course. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stuffy Doll" href="#" target="_blank">Stuffy Doll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.70) has been iterated on a few times, and we'll also add the newest one, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brash Taunter" href="#" target="_blank">Brash Taunter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.00). The best part about these two are that they are indestructible. Even if we ping them while Kumano is wearing an Equipment that grants deathtouch, they won't die along the way. They also make great blockers in the face of anything with a big butt that will be hard to ping down. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Coalhauler Swine" href="#" target="_blank">Coalhauler Swine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.15) is able to simultaneously hit our opponents' life totals when we ping it, and if you're playing the deck right, the downside of us also getting bonked should be minimal.</p>

<h3><strong>RAGE!</strong></h3>
<p>Our next group of cards don't exactly work the same way as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Stuffy Doll" href="#" target="_blank">Stuffy Doll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but more like a better version of the <em>Enrage</em> mechanic from <em>Ixalan</em>. First up, <span class="edhrecp__link side-by-side"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ill-Tempered Loner" href="#" target="_blank">Ill-Tempered Loner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.36) will dole out damage like the dolls above, but this time to any target. When it flips, ALL of your permanents pass along the pings, which means you essentially double up any damage hitting one of the other dolls. The new <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Feldon, Ronom Excavator" href="#" target="_blank">Feldon, Ronom Excavator</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.23) can come down early for some quick hits but also can trade himself in for some good card selection later. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Zalto, Fire Giant Duke" href="#" target="_blank">Zalto, Fire Giant Duke</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.12) can pack a big punch and can also speed through dungeons as each instance of damage dealt, which coincidentally is exactly what our commander wants to do.</p>

<h3>Payoffs for Pinging</h3>
<p>Next we have two cards that pay us off for all this damage we're doing. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Knollspine Dragon" href="#" target="_blank">Knollspine Dragon</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.46), while mana-intensive, can act as a giant one-sided wheel for us after we dome an opponent for a bunch of damage. With all of our damage-amplifiers, <span class="edhrecp__link side-by-side"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Toralf, God of Fury" href="#" target="_blank">Toralf, God of Fury</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($2.20) is hard not to include. If you've never seen this card go off, just get a little bit of excess damage (which also gets amplified), and it's very easy to snowball into dead opponents. Speaking of damage-amplifiers...</p>

<h3>Facilitating the Fire</h3>
<p>...<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fiery Emancipation" href="#" target="_blank">Fiery Emancipation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> would be one of the best cards in this deck, it's just SO expensive. Fortunately, we just had a pseudo-reprint. Those of you paying close attention will notice we added eight creatures to the deck, making <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="City on Fire" href="#" target="_blank">City on Fire</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($3.77) a lot easier to cast. Once this hits the board, we're throwing <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lightning Strike" href="#" target="_blank">strikes</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> (or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lightning Bolt" href="#" target="_blank">bolts</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> if we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Heartstone" href="#" target="_blank">Heartstone</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>) with Kumano like Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning, and once the game is over we can all sing a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rousing Refrain" href="#" target="_blank">Rousing Refrain</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.69) of "New York, New York". Yankees nostalgia aside, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rousing Refrain" href="#" target="_blank">Rousing Refrain</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is an underrated card, repeatedly giving us a burst of mana that can be used even outside of our upkeep. Looking at you and your hefty pricetag, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Braid of Fire" href="#" target="_blank">Braid of Fire</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

Brew For Your Buck - Death by a Million Pings

<h1>Not Another Boros Equipment Deck...</h1>
<p>Hello, fellow brewer, and welcome back to <em>Brew For Your Buck</em>, where we swap out the top 10 most expensive cards in a deck with 10 budget cards that add a unique twist. This week, we're combining the most popular Boros commander with the most popular Boros theme. It's Osgir Equipment! "But wait, Brian!" you ask, "That seems pretty straightforward and frankly, a little bor(os)ing." Well, to spice things up, we need to look a little closer.</p>
<p>Osgir quickly became the most popular Boros commander because he provides a grindy, value-oriented, graveyard-centric playstyle for the color pair, and finally gave us something other than just another Equipment or combat-focused commander. Just a few months earlier, we also received an uncommon legend from<em> Kaldheim</em> that looked like, yes, yet another Boros Equipment commander. However, when looking at these two side-by-side, I see some striking similarities that involve graveyards.</p>

<p>What I didn't put together at first is that Koll is a combo-tacular commander that combines Equipment and graveyard strategies all the way up through cEDH tables. Inspired by Jake FitzSimons and his <a href="https://commandersherald.com/let-me-sell-ya-koll-skullclamp-cedh/">article</a> on Commander's Herald, we're going to slot Koll and his infinite combo pieces into our Osgir deck. Looking at the average Osgir Equipment list on EDHREC, the deck clocks in at a whopping $367.81. A sword and some mono-W staples contain most of the cost. Interestingly, we're removing only white or colorless cards from the deck. All the red cards stay put.</p>

<p>Of note, this time only <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sacred Foundry" href="#" target="_blank">Sacred Foundry</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($16.95) would be in the top 10 if we counted lands, so most of the mana base is pretty affordable! Replacing the Foundry with a budget option brings our total savings to <strong>$251.07</strong>.</p>

<h2>Additions</h2>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Koll, the Forgemaster" href="#" target="_blank">Koll, the Forgemaster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.09) is the obvious first addition to deck, and before we get into the individual swaps, here's how the combo works in a nutshell: using Equipment cost-reducers we equip a mana-neutral creature that will die and come back to our hand through Koll's ability over and over again. I'll go through the specifics of each card below, then sum up the combo lines at the end. Of course, these cards also have utility outside of just combo-ing off, so don't worry about adding cards to the deck that are dead without Koll.</p>
<h3>Fodder Creatures</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Ornithopter"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Myr Moonvessel"></div></div>
<p>Let's start with the mana-neutral creatures. The first place to look is creatures that literally cost zero mana. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh" href="#" target="_blank">Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.45), AKA Roger, is a familiar face in Equipment decks, as the plethora of keywords make him great at wielding a weapon of your choice. Next, and don't laugh, is the mighty <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ornithopter" href="#" target="_blank">Ornithopter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.08). Again, a zero-mana creature with evasion, it can wear Equipment just fine, but it also can be recurred with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Daretti, Scrap Savant" href="#" target="_blank">Daretti, Scrap Savant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> or <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sun Titan" href="#" target="_blank">Sun Titan</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, sacrificed to Osgir's first ability, or tutored up with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Goblin Engineer" href="#" target="_blank">Goblin Engineer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>The next two are not actually zero mana, but function in much the same way as we proceed through the combo. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Myr Moonvessel" href="#" target="_blank">Myr Moonvessel</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.30) pays for itself with its own ability after we sac it. It also offers a weird form of ramp if you make multiple copies of it, and it has synergies with the other artifact-matters cards, similar to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ornithopter" href="#" target="_blank">Ornithopter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Finally, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Impulsive Pilferer" href="#" target="_blank">Impulsive Pilferer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.08), which functions much in the same way as Moonvessel. Just make sure you don't <em>Encore</em> it for the combo, as it exiles the real card and just makes tokens of itself.</p>
<h3>Equip Cost-Reducers</h3>

<p>Next thing we need is a way to equip without spending mana. Fortunately, the deck already has some of these effects, as we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Puresteel Paladin" href="#" target="_blank">Puresteel Paladin</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fighter Class" href="#" target="_blank">Fighter Class</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bladehold War-Whip" href="#" target="_blank">Bladehold War-Whip</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Adding <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Auriok Steelshaper" href="#" target="_blank">Auriok Steelshaper</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.26) and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nahiri, Storm of Stone" href="#" target="_blank">Nahiri, Storm of Stone</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.13) to the mix is basically automatic. You'll see that you may need two of these on the battlefield depending on which ones you have access to, though Osgir can clone <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bladehold War-Whip" href="#" target="_blank">Bladehold War-Whip</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> if you want to be sneaky from the graveyard.</p>
<h3>Key Equipment</h3>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Skullclamp"></div></div>
<p>We have our fodder, we have our cost-reducers, now for the finale. This deck already has plenty of ways to find these key pieces of Equipment, but Osgir also lets us recur them from our 'yard pretty easily if they get binned before we pop off.</p>
<p>First up is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Skullclamp" href="#" target="_blank">Skullclamp</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($3.81). Yea, it stretches the definition of a budget card a bit, but as one of the most powerful Equipment ever printed, it's worth every penny. With Koll and an equip-cost-reducer on the battlefield, equipping this to one of our non-<span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ornithopter" href="#" target="_blank">Ornithopter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> fodder creatures this allows us to literally draw our entire deck at sorcery speed. Equip the clamp, our creature dies, Koll brings it back, and we cast it again to repeat. This combo is the heart of the cEDH versions of Koll, so we'd be remiss to not include it.</p>

<p>Now we need a way to win the game. For this, we turn to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mortarpod" href="#" target="_blank">Mortarpod</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.09) and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mask of Immolation" href="#" target="_blank">Mask of Immolation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.05). In a similar fashion to the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Skullclamp" href="#" target="_blank">Skullclamp</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> line, just equip and sacrifice the creature with its new ability to ping an opponent. Koll will trigger, returning the creature to your hand, then repeat to keep on pinging until the table is dead.</p>

<p>Hello, fellow brewer, and welcome back to <em>Brew for Your Buck</em>, where we swap out the top 10 most expensive cards in a deck with 10 budget cards that add a unique twist.</p>
<p>It's probably no secret at this point that black is my favorite color in the game, so I was on the lookout to not bore you all with another black deck but also search for something I could put together from cards in my collection.</p>
<p>An LGS in my area was unfortunately going out of business (thankfully someone bought it and it's back!) right around the time of <em>Commander Legends: Battle for Balder's Gate </em>release, so I ended up getting a few discount boxes during their closing sale. In reading through the Background pairings possible, I noticed a really interesting synergy between these two:</p>

However, when we order our triggers on our end step, we can target that creature with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Far Traveler" href="#" target="_blank">Far Traveler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> first, blink it, then not have to return it! Now we have something most blink decks don't have: a way to win quickly. Looking at the average list on EDHREC, the deck clocks in at $189.10, with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rhystic Study" href="#" target="_blank">Rhystic Study</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and a bunch of blink staples making up our top 10. When did <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Propaganda" href="#" target="_blank">Propaganda</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> become a $4+ dollar card?!</p>

<p>This time around, the manabase doesn't make up a huge percentage of the deck's value. We can save an additional $23.70 if we cut and replace the ones that would have made the top-10, bringing our total savings to <strong>$143.69</strong>.</p>

<h2>Additions</h2>
<p>For all of you that are upset with taking out our blink pieces, don't worry. You'll still be able to head straight to value town and with an actual clock to boot. For our budget package, we turn to another <em>D&amp;D</em> mechanic: dungeons. It turns out that there are a lot of ways to venture into the dungeon when our creatures enter the battlefield or do combat damage to an opponent, and our commanders are set up to do both of these, so we'll be flying through dungeons and reaping the benefits in no time!</p>
<h3>Venture "Lords"</h3>
<p>Our first substitutions are the some of the best venturers we have access to. First up, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Radiant Solar" href="#" target="_blank">Radiant Solar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.48) is just cracked. Not only do we get a venture trigger when it enters, but we'll venture <strong>every time</strong> we blink a creature. Not to mention <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Radiant Solar" href="#" target="_blank">Radiant Solar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> also flies, so we can target something else with Alora's ability and still crack in for a six-point life swing. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hama Pashar, Ruin Seeker" href="#" target="_blank">Hama Pashar, Ruin Seeker</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.06) is a no-brainer, doubling up our dungeon value for just existing on the battlefield.</p>

<h3>Attacking for Value</h3>
<p>While Alora gives us some fantastic evasion, she only does so with one key creature. Our plan is to end the game through combat damage while supporting our creatures with all of our dungeon value, so granting more of our board evasion will accelerate us to a win. To start, we can add <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Midnight Pathlighter" href="#" target="_blank">Midnight Pathlighter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.25) to grant our board a unique form of evasion. Even though the format is clogged with more and more legendary creatures, at the bare minimum we guarantee a venture trigger with the creature we target with Alora. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seasoned Dungeoneer" href="#" target="_blank">Seasoned Dungeoneer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($3.42) can give 17 out of 39 creatures in our final list protection from creatures (read: unblockable) and some card filtering with the <em>Explore</em> mechanic as well. Finally, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Thorough Investigation" href="#" target="_blank">Thorough Investigation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.61) grants us Clues for attacking so much, and in turn the Clues will give us a venture in addition to a card. We can even store up the Clues and turbo through a dungeon in one big card-drawing, venturing turn!</p>

<h3>Completion Bonuses</h3>
<p>Now that we've accelerated our dungeon room rate, we can take a look at cards that grant us big bonuses for completing them. The recently-banned-in-Legacy <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="White Plume Adventurer" href="#" target="_blank">White Plume Adventurer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($3.22) saw a significant price drop, so we can snag a copy on the cheap. Like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seasoned Dungeoneer" href="#" target="_blank">Seasoned Dungeoneer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> above, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Eccentric Apprentice" href="#" target="_blank">Eccentric Apprentice</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.06) can help us attack with other creatures that aren't being sneaked through with Alora by turning a blocker into a bird. These two are also fine blink targets, as we'll take the initiative on their way in. Finally, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Imoen, Mystic Trickster" href="#" target="_blank">Imoen, Mystic Trickster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.06) keeps the good times rolling, drawing us two cards per turn as long as we have the initiative, which should be trivial if we have an unblockable creature each turn.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="White Plume Adventurer"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Eccentric Apprentice"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Imoen, Mystic Trickster"></div></div>
<p>One omission from our budget package to note is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nadaar, Selfless Paladin" href="#" target="_blank">Nadaar, Selfless Paladin</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. He's a great card for the strategy and cheap ($0.30) if you want to pick up a copy, but his inherent vigilance prevents him from being blinked with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Far Traveler" href="#" target="_blank">Far Traveler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Watch out for those non-bos!</p>
<h3>Generic Value</h3>
<p>Okay, we could slot in some other dungeon cards, but I just thought it was criminal that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sludge Monster" href="#" target="_blank">Sludge Monster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.17) and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Myr Battlesphere" href="#" target="_blank">Myr Battlesphere</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.21) were not in the average deck list. Both of them have ETB and attack triggers that are just insane if we get them turn after turn. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sludge Monster" href="#" target="_blank">Sludge Monster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will lock down two creatures per turn, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Myr Battlesphere" href="#" target="_blank">Myr Battlesphere</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>... well, games will just END if it sticks around for a few turns. A note on <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sludge Monster" href="#" target="_blank">Sludge Monster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>: just because it leaves the battlefield when it blinks doesn't mean the slime counters are removed from anything, so feel free to slime it up like a Nickelodeon show from the 90s.</p>

<p>Let's take a look at what we've saved:</p>

<h1>Limited Inspiration</h1>
<p>Hello, fellow brewer, and welcome back to <em>Brew for your Buck</em>, where we swap out the top 10 most expensive cards in a deck with 10 budget cards that add a unique twist. Until now we've looked at a lot of different two-color decks, in part because as we add colors the most expensive cards tend to just be the mana base, which for us creates a weird dynamic for removing and adding cards. Based on your feedback, we're going to switch it up a bit. We'll only look at the top ten <span style="text-decoration: underline;">nonland</span> cards going forward, trusting you to adjust your mana base as needed for your budget and deck functionality. I'll include "additional savings" from the mana base after the list of cuts just so it's clear.</p>
<p>With that out of the way, let's move on to today's deck. My favorite way to play <em>Magic </em>besides Commander is Limited. I started my foray into drafting back in the <em>Scars of Mirrodin</em> block, and yes, I forced <em>Infect</em> until I didn't, then 3-0'd the FNM with a red-white beatdown deck. After <em>Scars</em> block, something happened that is now mythical in the annals of Limited: triple <em>Innistrad</em> draft. And within that format was one of the most famous Limited decks of all time<em>. Shadows Over Innistrad: Remastered</em> kind of brought it to <em>Arena</em>, but we are bringing it to Commander. Yes, dear reader, today's budget package is the <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider Spawning" href="#" target="_blank">Spider Spawning</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> deck, shoehorned into an existing Commander deck as a tribute to the fun I had all those years ago.</p>
<p>Fortunately, we have a perfect commander to do this: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sidisi, Brood Tyrant" href="#" target="_blank">Sidisi, Brood Tyrant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Sidisi is all about getting creatures in the 'yard, which happens to be perfect for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider Spawning" href="#" target="_blank">Spider Spawning</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Being in Sultai also allows us to play all of the cards we need for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider Spawning" href="#" target="_blank">Spider Spawning</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and its myriad of friends that made the 40-card deck pop.</p>

<p>Looking at the average list on EDHREC, the deck clocks in at $367.40. As expected, seven of the top 10 most expensive cards are lands. Taking out that many without replacing them with basics or other budget lands would probably be catastrophic in a deck looking to mill itself, so as mentioned before we're going to look at the top 10 nonlands to remove:</p>

<h2>Additions</h2>
<h3>The Trinity</h3>
<p>To start off, we know we're adding <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider Spawning" href="#" target="_blank">Spider Spawning</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.11), it's the namesake card of the deck. In <em>Innistrad</em> Limited there were other key cards needed to infinitely loop it. One reason why the deck was so silly is because a lot of these cards would be close to last picks since they really didn't do much in any other draft deck. These were <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Runic Repetition" href="#" target="_blank">Runic Repetition</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.02) and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Memory&#039;s Journey" href="#" target="_blank">Memory&#039;s Journey</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.15). Once you were down to only a few cards left in the deck, you could use <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Memory&#039;s Journey" href="#" target="_blank">Memory&#039;s Journey</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to shuffle <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Spider Spawning" href="#" target="_blank">Spider Spawning</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Runic Repetition" href="#" target="_blank">Runic Repetition</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> back into your deck, then use <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Runic Repetition" href="#" target="_blank">Runic Repetition</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to put <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Memory&#039;s Journey" href="#" target="_blank">Memory&#039;s Journey</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> back into your hand and repeat to make unlimited Spiders.</p>

<h3>Classic Support</h3>
<p>Some of the classic support cards for the draft deck are already in our list, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deranged Assistant" href="#" target="_blank">Deranged Assistant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Splinterfright" href="#" target="_blank">Splinterfright</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, but we have a few more classics to add. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gnaw to the Bone" href="#" target="_blank">Gnaw to the Bone</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.12) keeps you alive as you mill yourself towards that state of bliss, and while we have plenty of ways to mill ourselves, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Selhoff Occultist" href="#" target="_blank">Selhoff Occultist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.07) goes into overdrive in Commander, with more players at the table, creature tokens (like the Zombies that Sidisi makes) dying, and board wipes flying around.</p>

<h3>Best Impressions</h3>
<p>The decks that really got to pop off had multiple copies of the key cards. Well, we can't do that in Commander, but thankfully we've been to Innistrad three times (as of 2023), so we can look to the sister sets for redundancy. <em>Midnight Hunt</em> and <em>Crimson Vow</em> tried to capture the nostalgia, like we're doing today, bringing us <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vilespawn Spider" href="#" target="_blank">Vilespawn Spider</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rootcoil Creeper" href="#" target="_blank">Rootcoil Creeper</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Turn the Earth" href="#" target="_blank">Turn the Earth</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vilespawn Spider" href="#" target="_blank">Vilespawn Spider</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is already in the deck, which really threw me for a loop as to why the card it pays homage to isn't. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rootcoil Creeper" href="#" target="_blank">Rootcoil Creeper</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.07) is not in the deck, but it is a great addition, being a mana dork to get us to Sidisi early and acting as a one-shot <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Runic Repetition" href="#" target="_blank">Runic Repetition</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Turn the Earth" href="#" target="_blank">Turn the Earth</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.13) is essentially <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Memory&#039;s Journey" href="#" target="_blank">Memory&#039;s Journey</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with some extra flexibility and lifegain thrown in.</p>

<h3>Commanding Shifts</h3>
<p>Okay, okay, I know we can't only jam Limited cards into the deck, so the last few cards are proof that I am not lost in a Bruce Springsteen song. This is Commander, after all, and there are some sweet additions that can supplement our Limited dreams. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mausoleum Secrets" href="#" target="_blank">Mausoleum Secrets</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.84) is one of my favorite tutors on a budget, and this is a perfect home for it. It can find 31 of the cards in our deck for two mana at instant speed, making it a really powerful tutor for us. In a similar vein, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Songs of the Damned" href="#" target="_blank">Songs of the Damned</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.78) can give us a huge burst of mana, again at instant speed to fuel a big turn. Finally, the newly reprinted <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oversold Cemetery" href="#" target="_blank">Oversold Cemetery</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.47) will let us grab a key creature out of our graveyard. Most of the time we want them to stay in there, but with all the milling we're doing, this card can act more like card draw than recursion.</p>

I definitely like this new method going forward, so look for more mana base savings in the future.</p>

Today is an exciting day for me, since we get to talk about my favorite two-color pair in the game: Golgari. (No I won't say Witherbloom, even if it's fitting.) <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dina, Soul Steeper" href="#" target="_blank">Dina, Soul Steeper</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> has some great aspects that make a good commander. She's only two mana, making her easily castable, her first ability is a win con and her second is a sac outlet, and, most importantly for today, she's a Druid.</p>

<h2>Additions</h2>
<p>Those of you that recognized the art at the top of the article know what's coming already: we're going to build around one of my favorite cards, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gilt-Leaf Archdruid" href="#" target="_blank">Gilt-Leaf Archdruid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.76). While our primary gameplan is still gain and drain, our package gives us a completely different (and hidden) plan of attack that is absolutely hilarious if we can pull it off. The list already contains six Druids, including Dina, so we can add some more to not only make the Archdruid activation possible, but even less of a magical christmasland scenario.</p>

<p>However, we aren't just adding random Druids for the hell of it. I've done my best to make sure the additions today aren't just dead cards if we don't have the Archdruid. <h3>Whether You Life It or Not</h3>
<p>Unsurprisingly, our first three additions are from <em>Strixhaven</em> or <em>Commander 2021. </em>These three Druids also synergize nicely with our lifegain plan, with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ezzaroot Channeler" href="#" target="_blank">Ezzaroot Channeler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.29) and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Accomplished Alchemist" href="#" target="_blank">Accomplished Alchemist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.25) giving us some more ramp, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Honor Troll" href="#" target="_blank">Honor Troll</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.04) amplifying our lifegain as we go.</p>

<h3>Druiding Your Best</h3>
<p>Speaking of ramp, this is arguably the thing that Druids are best known for. We already have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Llanowar Elves" href="#" target="_blank">Llanowar Elves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, so we can add <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fyndhorn Elves" href="#" target="_blank">Fyndhorn Elves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.97) and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Elvish Mystic" href="#" target="_blank">Elvish Mystic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.38) for some more turn-one acceleration. We can also add <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Seton, Krosan Protector" href="#" target="_blank">Seton, Krosan Protector</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.97) to turn all of our Druids (including Dina) into <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Llanowar Elves" href="#" target="_blank">Llanowar Elves</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. And yes, we could just put Seton in the command zone, but we lose access to black, the best color in <em>Magic</em> (fact, no personal bias at all), and our opponents will see what's coming!</p>

<h3>Druid-tility</h3>
<p>To round out our budget package, I wanted to include some druid-tility cards. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Nullmage Advocate" href="#" target="_blank">Nullmage Advocate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.15) is a weird one, but besides being repeatable "free" removal, it can be a really great political tool and act as a weird form of graveyard hate in a pinch. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Paragon of Eternal Wilds" href="#" target="_blank">Paragon of Eternal Wilds</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.17) pumps our team and can give Dina trample if we decide to use her second ability to deal a bunch of damage. Finally, while not a Druid or even a creature, I had to include <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Primal Command" href="#" target="_blank">Primal Command</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.56). It can be slow, but it's really flexible, being a tutor for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gilt-Leaf Archdruid" href="#" target="_blank">Gilt-Leaf Archdruid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, removal for a problem noncreature card, graveyard hate, and can even dome someone for seven if we have a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sanguine Bond" href="#" target="_blank">Sanguine Bond</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> effect out.</p>

I have my usual problem with the land count, but I'm starting to sound like a broken record, so I'll throw it to you, dear reader. Going forward would you like me to remove only the top 10 <span style="text-decoration: underline;">nonland</span> cards from the list? This might mean less overall savings but at least we keep these low land counts the same. Or we can keep doing what we're doing, lands be damned!</p>

<p>Hello, fellow brewer, and welcome back to <em>Brew for your Buck</em>, where we swap out the top 10 most expensive cards in a deck with 10 budget cards that add a unique twist. If you've been following the series so far, you'll know that we haven't yet delved into the wonderful world of red mana, so today we're going to change that. I don't have more than a basic understanding of the lore, so I won't try to tell you much about Mishra. I do know that he likes artifacts and graveyards, though, and that's right up my alley!</p>

As usual, we'll start by removing the most expensive cards in the deck then take a look at our budget package, noting that all prices listed below were current at time of writing. <h2>Additions</h2>
<p>For the budget packages of the last few decks, we focused our substitutes on specific mechanics that fit our commanders' respective advantages and abilities. Today, we're going to swap in a budget package that adds a full-on infinite combo to the deck. We'll need a few pieces for this to work, so let's get started.</p>
<h3>Combo Pieces...</h3>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Trazyn the Infinite" href="#" target="_blank">Trazyn the Infinite</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.75) is the primary piece we need for our combo to work, being a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Necrotic Ooze" href="#" target="_blank">Necrotic Ooze</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.98) for artifacts. You might be asking, "Why not just build the deck with Trayzn in the command zone?" Well, not only is this deck already built around getting artifacts (including Trayzn) into the graveyard, but <em>Unearth</em> will allow us to cheat him into play with haste, enabling an immediate combo win. Oh, and guess what, we are also going to throw in the Ooze, too! As you'll see, all of the other combo pieces are creatures, so while we can't reanimate the Ooze with Mishra, it does offer us some redundancy.</p>

<p>We need to put the right combination of cards into our graveyard. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Palladium Myr" href="#" target="_blank">Palladium Myr</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.51) is an artifact (for Trazyn) and a creature (for Ooze) that taps for the critical two mana needed to go infinite. You can also use <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sol Ring" href="#" target="_blank">Sol Ring</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in conjunction with Trazyn as a backup. Next, we use two creatures with untap abilities: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pili-Pala" href="#" target="_blank">Pili-Pala</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($2.49) and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Farmstead Gleaner" href="#" target="_blank">Farmstead Gleaner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.11).</p>
<p>With <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Palladium Myr" href="#" target="_blank">Palladium Myr</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pili-Pala" href="#" target="_blank">Pili-Pala</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in the 'yard, Trazyn and Ooze can now generate infinite mana which can turned into infinite damage via <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Welder Automaton" href="#" target="_blank">Welder Automaton</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.07). Replace <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pili-Pala" href="#" target="_blank">Pili-Pala</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Farmstead Gleaner" href="#" target="_blank">Farmstead Gleaner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Welder Automaton" href="#" target="_blank">Welder Automaton</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Triskelion" href="#" target="_blank">Triskelion</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.17), and you'll also have infinite damage.</p>

<p>We already have two great direct-to-graveyard tutors in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Buried Alive" href="#" target="_blank">Buried Alive</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Goblin Engineer" href="#" target="_blank">Goblin Engineer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, plus we get to keep both in the deck since they aren't in the list of cuts. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Unmarked Grave" href="#" target="_blank">Unmarked Grave</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($1.14), <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Vile Entomber" href="#" target="_blank">Vile Entomber</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.23), and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Disciples of Gix" href="#" target="_blank">Disciples of Gix</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> ($0.03) simply increase the density of these effects so we can grab a combo piece or another one of the sweet artifacts in the list to <em>Unearth</em> with Mishra.</p>

Play more of them! Especially in decks like this where you'll likely be discarding them a lot. In this case we also removed two of them as part of our budget swap, so pay extra attention if you seem to be mana screwed a lot.</p>
