The Over/Under - Predicting the Popularity of Monocolor Avatar Commanders

Appa, Steadfast GuardianAppa, Steadfast Guardian | Art by Maël Ollivier-Henry

Here we go. Magic is headed to Pandora, where we'll meet the Na'vi, mine some unobtanium, and rake in a cool three billion at the box office.

...What's that? My editor has just swooped in to inform me I'm describing the wrong IP. Apparently, we're talking about some cartoon show today — and it's not even SpongeBob.

Whatever the IP, you're reading The Over/Under, the article series dedicated to predicting which commanders will bend the biggest numbers on EDHREC after a year of existence. The line is 1,200 decks, so each new commander gets an "Over" or "Under" that line. There's also one "Can't-Miss Pick" per article, which is my surest selection.

And don't forget to return next year to see how I did.

As the title implies, today we're only looking at the mono-colored legends in the Avatar sets, as there's too many legends to cover in one article. So check back soon for all the multicolor commanders.

Ready to not talk about aliens? Without further ado, let's begin!

One More Further Ado

Before we begin, I feel I should disclose everything I know about Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is pretty much nothing. I know there's some little bald kid who really likes the band Earth, Wind, & Fire (and Water?), and there's also a terrible M. Night Shyamalan adaptation that my good friend and official Over/Under Consigliere Shane once tried watching, solo, although I'm pretty sure it made him physically ill.

In short, I'm a subject matter expert.

Aang, Airbending MasterAang, Airbending Master

Aang, Airbending Master

Hey, it’s that little bald kid! Mono-white is already a tough ask, but Aang makes up for it with experience counters, which are pretty much always an Over. Plus, his preorder price is about $50 at the time of this writing, so that's got to mean something.

My prediction: Over

Aang, Air NomadAang, Air Nomad

Aang, Air Nomad

This Aang is worse. A lot worse. Like, so much worse I'm wondering if that rare printing is a typo. I mean, with modern power creep being what it is, shouldn't this be an uncommon? Or even a common? I'm a little baffled by this card — and I'd be even more baffled if it went Over.

My prediction: Under

Aang, the Last AirbenderAang, the Last Airbender

Aang, the Last Airbender

One part Snapping DrakeSnapping Drake, another part Man-o'-WarMan-o'-War, with a little Mystic of the Hidden WayMystic of the Hidden Way sprinkled on top. And it's an Ally. While that might sound like a lot, this Last Airbender is the last card most players would want in their command zone.

My prediction: Under

Appa, Aang's CompanionAppa, Aang's Companion

Appa, Aang's Companion

Appa here should audition to be the Buffalo Bills' new mascot, because he's definitely not making it as a commander. The body of a Giant SpiderGiant Spider with the text of a Pegasus CourserPegasus Courser can't possibly cut it.

My prediction: Under

Appa, Loyal Sky BisonAppa, Loyal Sky Bison

Appa, Loyal Sky Bison

Look, I already said no. This is basically the same card, only with slightly bigger numbers.

My prediction: Under

Appa, Steadfast GuardianAppa, Steadfast Guardian

Appa, Steadfast Guardian

It took three tries, but we've finally found a viable Appa. Flash allows him to perform a serviceable Teferi's ProtectionTeferi's Protection impression for your creatures, and when you recast them, each will come with a token.

Furthermore, we've seen the power of casting from exile with the hyper-popular Prosper, Tome-BoundProsper, Tome-Bound. True, mono-white doesn't get the impulse draw of red, but tons of mechanics these days cast from exile, including foretell, Adventure, plot, and most recently, warp from Edge of Eternities.

My prediction: Over

Appa, the VigilantAppa, the Vigilant

Appa, the Vigilant

This makes a dent on the average board, but seven mana is a tough ask for mono-white.

My prediction: Under

Hakoda, Selfless CommanderHakoda, Selfless Commander

Hakoda, Selfless Commander

Casting spells from your library yields profitable card advantage, and this set is packed with new Allies. Still, I'm skeptical of any one-color Ally commanders, since most Ally decks prefer to play all of them.

My prediction: Under

Jet, Rebel LeaderJet, Rebel Leader

Jet, Rebel Leader

I was going to compare Jet here to Delney, Streetwise LookoutDelney, Streetwise Lookout, but that would be like comparing the aforementioned Buffalo Bills to my New York Giants. In other words, one's a lot worse than the other.

My prediction: Under

Katara, Heroic HealerKatara, Heroic Healer

Katara, Heroic Healer

A five-mana 2/3? What is this, '90s Night at the local bar?

My prediction: Under

Master PiandaoMaster Piandao

Master Piandao

This might've been something at a cheaper mana cost with different colors with a better trigger condition. As it stands, this Master hasn’t mastered the only test that matters: The Over test.

My prediction: Under

Momo, Friendly FlierMomo, Friendly Flier

Momo, Friendly Flier

I know this Momo came first, but I know Momo as that creepy weirdo who crashed WhatsApp circa 2018. Other-Momo here seems friendlier, especially to flyers, and its intrinsic efficiency combined with its cost reduction will produce some busted starts.

I'll be giving this one a call on WhatsApp.

My prediction: Over

Momo, Playful PetMomo, Playful Pet

Momo, Playful Pet

The joke here is to airbend Momo, although there's no shortage of ways to trigger Momo beyond that, including blink, bounce, or, dare I suggest it, web-slinging from Spider-Man.

Speaking of which, people were quite critical of all the repeated names in Spider-Man, yet I haven't heard the same criticism levied toward this set. I suppose I'd best move on before I get cancelled...

My prediction: Over

Momo, Rambunctious RascalMomo, Rambunctious Rascal

Momo, Rambunctious Rascal

Speaking of those repeated names, here's one more. Like most of these Airbender Eternal commanders, this feels meant for an introductory crowd, not the community at large.

My prediction: Under

Monk GyatsoMonk Gyatso

Monk Gyatso

Oh boy. You can get up to some wackiness with this one. Not only does this effectively give your other creatures pseudo-immunity from opposing targeted removal, it also turns cards like Mother of RunesMother of Runes into blink effects on a stick.

Seems powerful to me, especially in a color that's known for blinking.

My prediction: Over

Pipsqueak, Rebel StrongarmPipsqueak, Rebel Strongarm

Pipsqueak, Rebel Strongarm

I'm not going to comment on the name, because I'd rather not get socked in the kissah. Suffice it to say that while Pipsqueak here does seem quite flavorful, he's effectively just a vanilla beater once you get that counter on him.

My prediction: Under (just don't tell Pipsqueak)

Sokka, SwordmasterSokka, Swordmaster

Sokka, Swordmaster

Normally, I’d give some disclaimer about mono-white commanders, but this one is frankly awesome. Kindred synergies, cost reduction, free equips, Equipment payoffs in general. Other than the somewhat presumptive assertion of mastery, what’s not to like?

My prediction: Over

Sokka, Wolf Cove's ProtectorSokka, Wolf Cove's Protector

Sokka, Wolf Cove's Protector

No.

My prediction: Under

Suki, Courageous RescuerSuki, Courageous Rescuer

Suki, Courageous Rescuer

Half a Glorious AnthemGlorious Anthem from the command zone doesn't sway me, and one measly free token (only during my turn, no less) isn't much better.

My prediction: Under

Suki, Kyoshi CaptainSuki, Kyoshi Captain

Suki, Kyoshi Captain

Now this Suki is more like it. I will confess, I have a checkered history when it comes to calling underserved creature types and the commanders that support them. But Suki's flavor text has given me the pep-talk I needed.

My prediction: Over

The Duke, Rebel SentryThe Duke, Rebel Sentry

The Duke, Rebel Sentry

Judging by the flavor text, it seems like they were trying to design an annoying commander. They succeeded. Assuming you can load counters on him, this thin white Duke basically becomes Giver of RunesGiver of Runes from the command zone. I doubt that's enough for the Over, but I appreciate the attempt.

My prediction: Under

Gran-GranGran-Gran

Gran-Gran

Gran-GranGran-Gran is a lot better than she might appear — and I'm not just saying that because I'm trying to respect my elders. She's actually strikingly similar to Phyrexia's Unctus, Grand MetatectUnctus, Grand Metatect, a commander that goes infinite with untappers like Ioreth of the Healing HouseIoreth of the Healing House.

Problem is, Unctus went Under, and I see little else keeping Gran-Gran out of the proverbial nursing home. Apologies in advance to my octogenarian readers, who I assume are numerous.

My prediction: Under

Katara, Bending ProdigyKatara, Bending Prodigy

Katara, Bending Prodigy

Like Gran-Gran, Katara here is better than she looks. First of all, her activated ability essentially costs five, not six, since she rewards herself for tapping. Second, that cost is further reduced by stuff like HeartstoneHeartstone and Training GroundsTraining Grounds. Third, artifacts tend to go wide, especially with all the Clue tokens in blue. I think we might have a sleeper in the making.

My prediction: Over

Katara, Waterbending MasterKatara, Waterbending Master

Katara, Waterbending Master

That last pick was speculative. This one's all but assured.

Drawing cards and casting instants sounds like blue at its finest. Imagine a turn three where you cast a one-mana cantrip on each of your three opponents' turns, earning three experience counters along the way — which, by the way, are almost impossible to remove. The leap from prodigy to master didn't take long, and I can see why.

My prediction: Over

Master PakkuMaster Pakku

Master Pakku

I know players enjoy milling. I'm one of them. But we surely can't enjoy milling enough to stoop this low. To quote legendary farmer Michael Waits, "I won't allow it!"

My prediction: Under

Princess YuePrincess Yue

Princess Yue

I'm sure this flavor is quite resonant, but the only thing resonating with me is a big, fat Under.

My prediction: I told ya — A Big, Fat Under

Teo, Spirited GliderTeo, Spirited Glider

Teo, Spirited Glider

Connive, but for flyers. Not much of a sales pitch.

My prediction: Under

The Blue SpiritThe Blue Spirit

The Blue Spirit

I don't know why the flavor text is asking me so many questions. All I know is, an almost-Vedalken OrreryVedalken Orrery from the command zone seems powerful, and the extra drawing clause is just gravy. And with Thanksgiving coming up, gravy is so hot right now. (Literally. Blow on that stuff before you eat it.)

My prediction: Over

The Mechanist, Aerial ArtisanThe Mechanist, Aerial Artisan

The Mechanist, Aerial Artisan

Sure, one could build a fun zero-creature commander deck with this fella. But The Mechanist also occupies the same corner as Urza, Lord High ArtificerUrza, Lord High Artificer — and that's not where you want to be.

My prediction: Under

The Terror of Serpent's PassThe Terror of Serpent's Pass

The Terror of Serpent's Pass

Back when I first started playing, I thought Plated SlagwurmPlated Slagwurm was the greatest creature ever printed. Update: It's not.

My prediction: Under

The Unagi of Kyoshi IslandThe Unagi of Kyoshi Island

The Unagi of Kyoshi Island

Gonna be honest, I feel like this card feels more mono-white than mono-blue. And even if it was white, I think it would be more welcome in the 99 than the command zone.

My prediction: Under

Tui and La, Moon and OceanTui and La, Moon and Ocean

Tui and La, Moon and Ocean

While Edge of Eternities' Spacecrafts make non-combat tapping easy and cards like Vizier of Tumbling SandsVizier of Tumbling Sands make repeated untapping even easier, I don't think either is enough to get these over the Over line.

My prediction: Under

Ty Lee, Chi BlockerTy Lee, Chi Blocker

Ty Lee, Chi Blocker

I’ve been off acrobats ever since seeing Robin's family in Batman Forever. These mediocre stats aren't changing that stance.

My prediction: Under

Wan Shi Tong, All-KnowingWan Shi Tong, All-Knowing

Wan Shi Tong, All-Knowing

PSA: Never forget to return your books to the library.

Wan Shi Tong certainly doesn't. It's a unique trigger condition that comes with a unique pair of tokens; they might as well have shadow. Combine with shuffle effects to get those banished cards lost in the library, or mill effects to dispose of those your opponents put second from the top.

My prediction: Over

Wan Shi Tong, LibrarianWan Shi Tong, Librarian

Wan Shi Tong, Librarian

So this one time in high school, a bunch of my friends and I went to see a movie, and we got a trailer for The Fourth Kind with Milla Jovovich, and there’s this freaky owl in the trailer, and while we were driving home, we all shrieked like owls, because an owl flew at our car, and we could’ve sworn it was the same one from the movie.

What’s that, you ask? Where was the Magic content in that anecdote? Nowhere — I was just trying to open up to you. And you don't need me telling you this is an Over.

My prediction: Over

Yue, the Moon SpiritYue, the Moon Spirit

Yue, the Moon Spirit

This reminds me of Inspiring StatuaryInspiring Statuary in the command zone, so I’ll have to check that card’s stats and get back to you.

...

Okay, I'm back — with good news, too. Inspiring Statuary appears in 121,759 decks. as I write this, which seems like plenty enough to indicate a decent performance for Yue here.

My prediction: Over

Azula, On the HuntAzula, On the Hunt

Azula, On the Hunt

While Azula might appear to have a Rakdos color identity due to her firebending ability, she's actually mono-black. The red mana symbol is hidden in her reminder text, similar to extort. Help me out here, rules lawyers.

Unfortunately, that's the most interesting thing I've got to say about her. You've got to risk her in combat just to get that free card, and she doesn't even come with evasion — or a valid hunting license.

My prediction: Under

Azula, Ruthless FirebenderAzula, Ruthless Firebender

Azula, Ruthless Firebender

Note that this treatment of Azula triggers per player discarding, not per card, and she spots you one free discard per attack. She also spots herself a discount on her activated ability, meaning she can swing for very much, very quickly.

Plus, she can reasonably activate that ability multiple times in a single combat.

My prediction: Over

June, Bounty HunterJune, Bounty Hunter

June, Bounty Hunter

How dare she imply I smell like a rat!

My prediction: Under

Koh, the Face StealerKoh, the Face Stealer

Koh, the Face Stealer

Is this thing really fooling anyone with stolen faces, since the whole body is still a giant millipede? Probably not, and neither is it not going Over.

Like that double negative? It's clunky but true, just like Koh here. (Like that clumsy simile, too?) Six mana is a lot, but exiling creatures and stealing their abilities is a big return. Reminds me of Necrotic OozeNecrotic Ooze, a creature appearing in 27,245 decks.

My prediction: Over

Lo and Li, Twin TutorsLo and Li, Twin Tutors

Lo and Li, Twin Tutors

Sixteen and 34. That's how many Lessons and Nobles you'll find for Lo and Li here. That's a workable total, although some of those Lessons are stinkers, and some of those Nobles are even worse. And among the latter, the best are already legendary...so why wouldn't you just run them as your commander instead?

My prediction: Under

Mai, Scornful StrikerMai, Scornful Striker

Mai, Scornful Striker

This is the kind of commander that gets you voted off the island. In other words, your friends will attack this commander first.

My prediction: Under

Nyla, Shirshu SleuthNyla, Shirshu Sleuth

Nyla, Shirshu Sleuth

Generating upwards of five Clues at once is like storing gallons of ice cream in your doomsday shelter: You'll die before you can use it all.

My prediction: Under

The Fire Nation DrillThe Fire Nation Drill

The Fire Nation Drill

I'm unsure why this one taps itself, or why it's so limited on targeting. And speaking of Limited, that's probably the only format this is going to see play.

My prediction: Under

Avatar Roku, FirebenderAvatar Roku, Firebender

Avatar Roku, Firebender

I own a 10-year-old Roku TV, and it's doing a lot worse than this fella. Note that he triggers whenever any player attacks, making flash enablers like the classic Vedalken OrreryVedalken Orrery must-haves. Even if you don't have that, you can use your free six mana to boost your opponents' attackers, so long as they're attacking each other.

My prediction: Over

Chong and Lily, NomadsChong and Lily, Nomads

Chong and Lily, Nomads

Come on, now. Bards?

My prediction: Under

Combustion ManCombustion Man

Combustion Man

I happen to think this commander is sneaky good.

Red is the color of extra combats, after all, and we've seen how much players enjoy those. Sure, opponents can take four to the face instead, but there's no shortage of ways to boost that number to untenable heights.

My prediction: Over

Fang, Roku's CompanionFang, Roku's Companion

Fang, Roku's Companion

My aforementioned TV has no companion, and if it did, it certainly wouldn't be a Dragon. Weirdly, I feel like he works better with our last commander than Roku himself. And as a solo artist, he leaves much to be desired.

My prediction: Under

Iroh, Dragon of the WestIroh, Dragon of the West

Iroh, Dragon of the West

This one gets the brain humming — although the sound might be discordant. Counters plus instant-speed mana sinks aren't exactly jazz and saxophone, and mentor has never been a pleasant tune. Now let's move on before this metaphor crumbles entirely.

If this is the instructor, it's a wonder anybody can firebend.

I'd rather forfeit my dessert than run this deserter.

My prediction: Under

I would like Longshot more if he had at least one more color. Any color. But as a mono-red commander, you're leaving too many awesome cards on the sidelines.

Mai might commander-damage people out of nowhere...if anyone bothered to play her.

This is better than the last few commanders we've seen, but not by much. Poor Smellerbee is JV, while Clive, Ifrit's DominantClive, Ifrit's Dominant is varsity.

My prediction: Under

Zuko, Avatar HunterZuko, Avatar Hunter

Zuko, Avatar Hunter

Free spells and cheap cantrips make this interesting, although I would've liked this Zuko more at a lower cost with worse stats. As it stands, five mana feels too expensive for this effect.

My prediction: Under

This version of Zuko is a little more promising. Problem is, he'll be running a lot of the same cards as Zada, Hedron GrinderZada, Hedron Grinder, a commander that boasts nearly 10,000 decks. So why wouldn't you just play Zada?

My prediction: Under

Avatar Kyoshi, EarthbenderAvatar Kyoshi, Earthbender

Splashy. Or should I say, earthy. But eight-mana commanders are a hard sell, even in mono-green.

I have a Samwise GamgeeSamwise Gamgee deck that mills people using Food as fuel for Grinding StationGrinding Station and Altar of the BroodAltar of the Brood, and it can't wait for Bosco here. That's already a corner case, and as a standalone commander, Bosco is truly just another Bear.

This is really bending the limits of the whole earthbending thing.

I have a hidden talent, too. It's called handing out 20 consecutive Unders.

My prediction: Under (This is number 21)

The Boulder, Ready to RumbleThe Boulder, Ready to Rumble

The Boulder, Ready to Rumble

The streak continues. This feels like such a win-more commander. Like, if you have 10-plus four-plus-power creatures out, do you really need a giant land to win?

My prediction: Under

The Cabbage MerchantThe Cabbage Merchant

The Cabbage Merchant

This guy rivals Ragost for goofiest commander of 2025. He’s also not half-bad, since Food are fairly easy to generate, even without the Merchant on the battlefield. You’ll want to pack ways to defend your stock (FogFog, Lost in the WoodsLost in the Woods), but that shouldn’t be difficult.

My prediction: Can't-Miss Pick

The Earth KingThe Earth King

The Earth King

Now this one I like. Unlike The Boulder, The Earth KingThe Earth King provides an extra body for the same mana cost, along with a much more beneficial attack trigger. Also, tokens like this are usually legendary, yet this one isn't, meaning you can populate to your heart's delight. Delightful!

My prediction: Over

Toph, Earthbending MasterToph, Earthbending Master

Toph, Earthbending Master

Earthbending? Great. Landfall? Swell. Experience counters? Best of all, since they're practically impossible to remove. Proliferate is going to be Toph's best friend, since it boosts both the animated lands and your experience counters themselves.

My prediction: Over

Toph, the Blind BanditToph, the Blind Bandit

Toph, the Blind Bandit

The Walls of Ba Sing Se

I'd like to quote my dear friend Jeremy for this one. He said I could.

"While [The Walls of Ba Sing Se] dies to many board wipes, it does survive the ever-common Blasphemous ActBlasphemous Act. However, true courage comes from paying 30 life to Toxic DelugeToxic Deluge it."

Amen to that, buddy. Jer went on to poo-poo this commander, as did our friends Drew and Ian, who are in the same group chat, a chat that we've named "EDH Nerds," for obvious reasons. They were all pretty down on this dude, and so was I. But now I'm starting to let down my walls, so to speak.

I mean, a Darksteel ForgeDarksteel Forge from the command zone is outstanding, even if you have to work for it. Furthermore, even in colorless, you get access to cards that make these Walls a legitimate threat, including Warmonger's ChariotWarmonger's Chariot and Walking BulwarkWalking Bulwark.

Sorry, friends. I've got to disagree with you — at my own peril.
