The Best Goblin Combos in Commander

Squee, the ImmortalSquee, the Immortal | Art by Svetlin Velinov

Welcome back to Wombo Combo, the article series where we take a glance at EDH's best combo cards using data from EDHREC and Commander Spellbook. For this edition, we're looking at the chaotic world of Goblins!

Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin
Goatnapper
Wort, the Raidmother

Goblins typically focus in a few different areas. One is combat damage, with many Goblins having haste or other abilities that interact with combat. Second, many Goblins have synergy for artifact decks, especially for sacrificing artifacts. Third, Goblins have a strong affinity for creating tokens, which are generally more Goblins.

While their world may be chaotic, your combos using Goblins don't have to be. Let's take a look.

#10: Brash Taunter

Brash Taunter

Number of Combos: 50

Deck Inclusions: 121,518 decks (3.96%)

Brash TaunterBrash Taunter is a different style of card that takes a punch and literally throws it back at an opponent. When it's dealt damage, it deals that much damage to an opponent. With Brash Taunter also being indestructible, you can practically deal infinite damage to it, thus dealing infinite damage to your opponents.

Blazing Sunsteel
Guilty Conscience
Wayta, Trainer Prodigy

Cards like Blazing SunsteelBlazing Sunsteel and Guilty ConscienceGuilty Conscience do this well. Brash Taunter is also a perfect inclusion for a Wayta, Trainer ProdigyWayta, Trainer Prodigy deck as you can use Wayta's ability to force Brash Taunter to fight another creature, like CacophodonCacophodon. Word of advice: don't lip off to it, or you may not like what happens next.

#9: Krenko, Mob Boss

Krenko, Mob Boss

Number of Combos: 86

Deck Inclusions: 29,455 as commander (#4); 58,936 as card (1.92%)

Krenko, Mob BossKrenko, Mob Boss is in the top 5 overall EDH commanders and is a staple choice to helm a Goblin deck. Its ability is simple yet absurdly powerful, essentially doubling the number of Goblins you control each time.

This quickly gets out of control with cards like Sword of the ParunsSword of the Paruns and Ashnod's AltarAshnod's Altar. If Krenko's your commander, it's actually possible to just cast it infinitely and outpace its commander tax. You'll need a haste-enabler for this, and Goblin WarchiefGoblin Warchief and Goblin ChieftainGoblin Chieftain are right on theme for that role.

Ashnod's Altar
Goblin Warchief
Thornbite Staff

You can also use Intruder AlarmIntruder Alarm or Thornbite StaffThornbite Staff for another easy combo.

#8: Putrid Goblin (and Similar Persist Cards)

Putrid Goblin
Murderous Redcap
Scuzzback Marauders

Number of Combos: Over 100 total

There are plenty of persist creatures, and quite a few of them are Goblins. These include Putrid GoblinPutrid Goblin, Murderous RedcapMurderous Redcap, and Scuzzback MaraudersScuzzback Marauders.

Persist creatures are integral pieces for many recursion combos due to their self-recurring nature. The key to using them is to either remove or otherwise counteract the counter each time for constant recursion. These cards can include SolemnitySolemnity to prevent the counter being placed, Luminous BroodmothLuminous Broodmoth to create an additional method of recursion, or Renata, Called to the HuntRenata, Called to the Hunt to place a +1/+1 counter, thus removing the -1/-1 counter.

Hex ParasiteHex Parasite can also work if you can pay the mana cost each iteration.

#7: Mizzix of the Izmagnus

Mizzix of the Izmagnus

Number of Combos: 102

Deck Inclusions: 5,207 as commander (#349); 11,366 as card (0.79%)

Mizzix of the IzmagnusMizzix of the Izmagnus is the perfect card to reduce the cost of your instant and sorcery spells, especially since the reduction increases over time. This makes it much easier to cast buyback spells, like ClockspinningClockspinning, in many simple combo lines.

Cards like Storm-Kiln ArtistStorm-Kiln Artist easily cover the colored mana requirement, and with Clockspinning specifically, you can give yourself more experience counters to increase Mizzix's reduction.

Clockspinning
Storm-Kiln Artist
Seething Song

Mizzix also works well to cheapen mana-generating spells, including Frantic SearchFrantic Search and Seething SongSeething Song. This saves mana that can be used to facilitate other parts of a combo. You can also use Mizzix to cast many game-ending spells for cheaper, further facilitating a total victory.

#6: Skirk Prospector

Skirk Prospector

Number of Combos: 138

Deck Inclusions: 77,406 decks (2.53%)

The prospect of a Goblin-themed sacrifice outlet makes perfect sense, so look no further than Skirk ProspectorSkirk Prospector. This is a ThermopodThermopod but for Goblins exclusively. With the propensity of Goblin decks to make many more Goblins, having an option to sacrifice some for makes combos easier to perform and more thematic.

Enduring Renewal
Koll, the Forgemaster

Skirk Prospector is a key piece for many combos involving Krenko, Mob Boss and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror BreakerKiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker (more on that later). Because Skirk Prospector can sacrifice itself, and it only costs to cast, it also works great for combos with Enduring RenewalEnduring Renewal or Koll, the ForgemasterKoll, the Forgemaster without needing another Goblin.

#5: Grenzo, Dungeon Warden

Grenzo, Dungeon Warden

Number of Combos: 145

Deck Inclusions: 3,670 as commander (#518); 3,575 as card (0.25%)

Grenzo, Dungeon WardenGrenzo, Dungeon Warden is one of a few Magic cards that interact with the bottom of your library instead of the top. You pay to put the bottom card of your library into your graveyard and possibly then onto the battlefield if Grenzo has equal or greater power.

Grenzo works very well with cards that either put themselves on the bottom of your library, like Timestream NavigatorTimestream Navigator or Murderous RiderMurderous Rider, or cards that can do that for you, like Soldevi DiggerSoldevi Digger or The Cauldron of EternityThe Cauldron of Eternity.

Timestream Navigator
The Cauldron of Eternity
Workhorse

Using creatures that generate mana, such as WorkhorseWorkhorse, and a sacrifice outlet completes a unique yet simple combo.

#4: Squee, the Immortal

Squee, the Immortal

Number of Combos: 178

Deck Inclusions: 647 as commander (#1,507); 52,078 as card (1.70%)

You might expect Squee, the ImmortalSquee, the Immortal to be a cockroach due to its inability to perish, but it is a true Goblin and a great combo piece for many decks.

Iraxxa, Empress of MarsIraxxa, Empress of Mars and Prosper, Tome-BoundProsper, Tome-Bound are examples of commanders who can take advantage of Squee's ever-successful recursive nature. Squee also creates a two-card combo with Food ChainFood Chain since you can cast it from exile, netting each iteration to spend on creature spells.

Iraxxa, Empress of Mars
Food Chain
Tormod, the Desecrator

Squee has good synergy with cards caring about cards leaving your graveyard, such as Tormod, the DesecratorTormod, the Desecrator and Quintorius, Field HistorianQuintorius, Field Historian, for extra pieces that can be used either as a payoff or as fuel for a combo.

#3: Slimefoot and Squee

Slimefoot and Squee

Number of Combos: 313

Deck Inclusions: 8,132 as commander (#167); 4,921 as card (0.85%)

Slimefoot and SqueeSlimefoot and Squee takes the Squee we just discussed and creates a mash-up with Slimefoot, the StowawaySlimefoot, the Stowaway.

The first ability takes inspiration from Slimefoot by making a Saproling token, and the second ability takes inspiration from Squee by returning the creature and another creature to the battlefield.

Sprouting Thrinax
Pitiless Plunderer
Burning-Tree Emissary

The ability to return another creature really makes Slimefoot and Squee a strong combo piece. Returning creatures like Sprouting ThrinaxSprouting Thrinax gives you additional tokens that can be sacrificed to mana, or you can have Treasures made with Pitiless PlundererPitiless Plunderer. You can also sacrifice creatures that make mana to help pay for Slimefoot and Squee's cost, such as Burning-Tree EmissaryBurning-Tree Emissary.

#2: Warren Soultrader

Warren Soultrader

Number of Combos: 374

Deck Inclusions: 124,307 decks (5.51%)

Don't worry if you're having déjà vu, we did just talk about Warren SoultraderWarren Soultrader in the Wizards version of Wombo Combo: since it's also a Goblin, we get to talk about it again!

Warren Soultrader is a similar variant of Phyrexian AltarPhyrexian Altar, but instead costs one life and makes a Treasure token. While the life payment does add an additional factor for infinite combos, making Treasure tokens opens up possibilities with token-doublers to easily produce more mana.

Stridehangar Automaton
Chatterfang, Squirrel General
Blood Artist

You can also use token-increasers for simple combos, such as Stridehangar AutomatonStridehangar Automaton or Chatterfang, Squirrel GeneralChatterfang, Squirrel General, to make an additional creature token. To counteract the life payment, Blood ArtistBlood Artist or Soul WardenSoul Warden can fit the job.

#1: Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker

Number of Combos: 505

Deck Inclusions: 962 as commander (#1,265); 96,670 as card (3.15%)

If you've ever heard the phrase "combos with a ham sandwich," chances are that was referring to Kiki-Jiki, Mirror BreakerKiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker. Kiki-Jiki has a simple ability that taps to create a copy of a nonlegendary creature you control, which is amazingly useful for combos.

The simplest option is to copy PestermitePestermite or similar to untap Kiki-Jiki as it enters, or to use a similar card like Intruder AlarmIntruder Alarm. Since Kiki-Jiki has haste, blinking it is another option, thanks to Felidar GuardianFelidar Guardian and similar cards. You can also get infinite combat phases by creating infinite copies of Akki Battle SquadAkki Battle Squad or Combat CelebrantCombat Celebrant.

Pestermite
Akki Battle Squad
Spark Double

Since Kiki-Jiki only copies nonlegendary creatures, why not also make Kiki-Jiki nonlegendary by making a token using Helm of the HostHelm of the Host or by cloning it using Spark DoubleSpark Double? Chances are, if you throw Kiki-Jiki into your deck, you'll likely stumble across an infinite combo by pure accident, which makes it the best Goblin to include for infinite combos.
