Bonjour, and welcome back to Wombo Combo, the article series showcasing Commander's premier combo cards based of EDHREC and Commander Spellbook data. This week, we continue our exploration through Commander's best Aura combo cards.
If you missed the last installment of Wombo Combo, check it out here to see the combo cards that came from #11 through #20 on the Auras list. This edition will list the top 10 Auras you need for comboing, and the list starts now!
#10: Crown of Flames (and Variants)
Deck Inclusions: 5,249 decks (0.13%)
Crown of FlamesCrown of Flames is an unusual Aura from Invasion that gives you the ability to return it to your hand for one mana. It's part of a cycle of cards with similar properties, which includes Shimmering WingsShimmering Wings, Whip SilkWhip Silk, and even cards from other sets such as Flickering WardFlickering Ward. These are cheap ways to get constellation and other triggers for just two mana.
Crown of Flames triggers Goldspan DragonGoldspan Dragon, The Howling AbominationThe Howling Abomination and Kykar, Wind's FuryKykar, Wind's Fury, and it's ideal for Chishiro, the Shattered BladeChishiro, the Shattered Blade combos.
#9: Karametra's Favor / Utopia Vow
Deck Inclusions: 6,975 (Favor); 1,015 (Vow)
Utopia VowUtopia Vow and Karametra's FavorKarametra's Favor are the Aura equivalents of Paradise MantleParadise Mantle, simply turning any creature into a mana producing creature (also known as a "mana dork").
These Auras work great for inspired triggers, but they work even better for so-called uninspired triggers, which trigger when a creature is tapped. Emmara, Soul of the AccordEmmara, Soul of the Accord and Tui and La, Moon and OceanTui and La, Moon and Ocean are great examples of this. Another great option is Pili-PalaPili-Pala, pairing it with Kinnan, Bonder ProdigyKinnan, Bonder Prodigy for infinite mana and activations of Kinnan's ability.
#8: Splinter Twin
Deck Inclusions: 25,573 decks (0.62%)
Splinter TwinSplinter Twin creates a token copy of the creature it's attached to with haste. Splinter Twin can be used as redundancy for Kiki-Jiki, Mirror BreakerKiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker in many combos, especially those involving single creatures.
Zealous ConscriptsZealous Conscripts and Corridor MonitorCorridor Monitor can have the token's ability untap them for an easy two-card combo. Alternative, but similar, combos can instead use Intruder AlarmIntruder Alarm, Midnight GuardMidnight Guard, or Thornbite StaffThornbite Staff to achieve a similar result.
You can also attach it to Port RazerPort Razer to easily get infinite combat phases.
#7: Infinite Reflection
Deck Inclusions: 2,824 decks (0.07%)
Infinite ReflectionInfinite Reflection causes all nontoken creatures you control to become copies of the enchanted creature indefinitely. Of course, you can use this to get as many Colossal DreadmawColossal Dreadmaws as your heart desires, but perhaps you should consider winning the game instead by attaching it to BiovisionaryBiovisionary or Mechanized ProductionMechanized Production.
Infinite Reflection can also attach to Lightning RunnerLightning Runner to give you infinite combat phases and energy counters. Dauthi VoidwalkerDauthi Voidwalker can use the Aura to return the creatures cast from exile as copies of it, thus letting you activate the ability again if it has haste.
#6: Kaya's Ghostform
Deck Inclusions: 152,466 decks (3.61%)
Kaya's GhostformKaya's Ghostform is a popular card for good reason, as it recurs the enchanted creature when it dies for . This effect is strong on its own, but when slotted into Enchantress or Graveyard decks, it becomes even better.
Returning Kaya's Ghostform to the battlefield is simple with a Muldrotha, the GravetideMuldrotha, the Gravetide or a Lurrus of the Dream-DenLurrus of the Dream-Den effect to cast it directly from your graveyard. Other options are Sun TitanSun Titan or Boonweaver GiantBoonweaver Giant, which'll return Kaya's Ghostform to the battlefield without needing to cast it. This'll remove the mana needed and open more combo possibilities.
It's worth mentioning that Kaya's Ghostform has many variants that cost more mana, including Gift of ImmortalityGift of Immortality and Minion's ReturnMinion's Return for more chances of a combo.
#5: Elemental Mastery
Deck Inclusions: 13,672 decks (0.33%)
Elemental MasteryElemental Mastery lets the enchanted creature tap to make a number of 1/1 Elemental creature tokens with haste equal to the creature's power. It can serve as redundancy in some combos for Splinter Twin, especially those involving Intruder Alarm or Sunstrike LegionnaireSunstrike Legionnaire and related cards.
Elemental Mastery's ability to create multiple tokens makes it more versatile, as those tokens provide more resources. This creates a two-card combo with Altar GolemAltar Golem, and lets you net tokens with Grimgrin, Corpse-BornGrimgrin, Corpse-Born.
For laughs, you can also throw Elemental Mastery onto a Jumbo CactuarJumbo Cactuar that's already attacked and get 10,000 Elementals. An extra combat phase or a simple Goblin BombardmentGoblin Bombardment inclusion then ends the game on the spot.
#4: Sinking Feeling
Deck Inclusions: 294 decks (0.01%)
You might've had a Sinking FeelingSinking Feeling this card would be here, and you'd be correct! While a very rare card to see in Commander, with under 300 decks currently running it, Sinking Feeling does have large combo potential. Its drawback of placing a -1/-1 counter can actually be useful when paired with Xavier Sal, Infested CaptainXavier Sal, Infested Captain to use its first ability, MorselhoarderMorselhoarder to add mana, or Flourishing DefensesFlourishing Defenses to create a creature token.
At worst, you can counteract the counter by placing a +1/+1 counter on the creature, as can be done with Kilo, Apogee MindKilo, Apogee Mind's ability.
#3: Sunbond / Light of Promise
Deck Inclusions: 13,397 (Sunbond); 31,264 (Light)
SunbondSunbond and Light of PromiseLight of Promise both place counters on a creature whenever you gain life. While Light of Promise is better than Sunbond due to the lower casting cost, they're interchangeable in infinite combos.
The most straightforward option is dumping counters onto Spike FeederSpike Feeder to remove and gain life, or dealing damage with a Walking BallistaWalking Ballista that you've given lifelink.
Another common line involves a "Soul Sister" effect (such as Soul WardenSoul Warden) to gain life, and placing the counter on Basking BroodscaleBasking Broodscale to create more creatures and further the loop. Crystalline CrawlerCrystalline Crawler is a great option as well for extra mana.
#2: Freed from the Real / Pemmin's Aura
Number of Combos: 809 (Freed); 771 (Pemmin's)
Deck Inclusions: 82,750 (Freed); 49,757 (Pemmin's)
Freed from the RealFreed from the Real and Pemmin's AuraPemmin's Aura each untap a creature for the low cost of . This lets any creature function similar to Horseshoe CrabHorseshoe Crab, including mana producing creatures like Selvala, Heart of the WildsSelvala, Heart of the Wilds for an easy infinite mana source.
Other uses for these cards include untapping Twitching DollTwitching Doll, Vizier of Tumbling SandsVizier of Tumbling Sands, and Ley WeaverLey Weaver for different effects. Freed from the Real specifically can also tap a creature, which works perfectly for Tui and La, Moon and Ocean or Emmara, Soul of the AccordEmmara, Soul of the Accord combos.
Outside of combos, simply paying to get another tapping activation for a creature can provide a very strong benefit, making both Freed from the Real and Pemmin's Aura excellent inclusions for most decks.
#1: Breath of Fury
Deck Inclusions: 20,250 decks (0.49%)
If you ever hear the phrase "Combos with a ham sandwich," there's a good chance you'll think of Breath of FuryBreath of Fury. All you need is a card that makes creature tokens each combat, and maybe a haste enabler if the tokens need it.
It turns out there are many cards in Magic that do this, and most are already popular inclusions in many aggro and go-wide decks. This includes staples like Loyal ApprenticeLoyal Apprentice, Legion WarbossLegion Warboss, and Adeline, Resplendent CatharAdeline, Resplendent Cathar.
Similarly, recursion cards like Ayara, Widow of the RealmAyara, Widow of the Realm or Olivia, Crimson BrideOlivia, Crimson Bride can continually recur creatures to sacrifice for infinite combats. From Xira, the Golden StingXira, the Golden Sting all the way to Vihaan, GoldwakerVihaan, Goldwaker, every combat commander can benefit from a Breath of Fury in the 99.
