Magic: The Gathering has officially gone into hyperdrive and taken us to the sci-fi inspired Edge of Eternities. To fit this new interstellar setting, there's a new artifact subtype: Spacecrafts.
Spacecrafts, and other cards with the station mechanic, gain charge counters by tapping down their controller's creatures, gaining one counter for each point of power possessed by the creatures stationing them.
EDHREC has already published a guide on the Best Spacecrafts in Edge of Eternities, but which creatures are the best at stationing them? After all, you might have the best spaceship in the galaxy, but it's not getting off its launchpad without a reliable crew.
Here's a breakdown of 10 great creatures, and some honorable mentions, to take with you on your next cruise across the multiverse.
Honorable Mentions
Before we discuss our 10 best cosmic explorers, let's run through some cards that almost made the list. These creatures make good astronauts, but not great ones.
When Wildfire AwakenerWildfire Awakener enters play, it creates several Elemental tokens that deal damage when they're tapped. This burn damage makes these Elementals great at both crewing Spacecraft and hurting the opposition as they do so.
Unfortunately, the tokens generated by Wildfire Awakener are just 1/1s, so they don't provide a lot of power, and convoking this card taps down potentially stronger creatures. It's often more efficient to just use those creatures to load up your spaceships, rather than relying on Wildfire Awakener.
Proliferate is a fantastic ability to build up the charge counters on your Spacecrafts, and many of the cards that make up this list possess it. Evolution SageEvolution Sage, Flux ChannelerFlux Channeler, and Kilo, Apogee MindKilo, Apogee Mind all proliferate when common in-game actions occur. Unfortunately, none of them have very high power, making them less suited for space travel than the cards we'll be talking about today.
Emmara, Soul of the Accord'sEmmara, Soul of the Accord's ability to generate a 1/1 token whenever she's tapped has made her a beloved Vehicle commander. She'd also work well in a Spacecraft deck, either as a commander or in the 99, but she's just not quite as good as some of the competition.
Great Oak GuardianGreat Oak Guardian provides one turn of amazing Spacecraft charging potential, but it relies on your already having a full board, and is slightly too costly at six mana.
Now that we've discussed these astro-aspirants, let's move on to our main list.
10. Ghalta, Primal HungerGhalta, Primal Hunger
Ghalta's colossal attack stat of 12 is enough to immediately fully charge any station card in the game, apart from The Eternity ElevatorThe Eternity Elevator and Dawnsire, Sunstar DreadnoughtDawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought. Still, 29/31 is a pretty great rate, especially considering that eight spaceships need 12 counters to charge up, conveniently the exact amount that Ghalta can provide.
You won't want to cast Ghalta for the full 12 mana that she costs at base. Fortunately, all you need to do to discount her is to have some creatures in play. This is a condition that you'll fulfill without needing to try.
Edge of Eternities isn't the first time that Magic: the Gathering has put Dinosaurs on a SpaceshipDinosaurs on a Spaceship, but Ghalta has got to be the most competent of Magic's Jurassic astronauts.
9. Yargle and MultaniYargle and Multani
This is another card that just offers pure raw stats, but oh boy those are some high numbers. At six mana, Yargle and Multani will typically be costlier to get out than Ghalta, thanks to that discount effect.
If you're running either The Eternity ElevatorThe Eternity Elevator or Dawnsire, Sunstar DreadnoughtDawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought, then Yargle and his Maro Sorcerer pal can get them 90% of the way to activation in a single swing. This means you just need to tap down a Grizzly BearsGrizzly Bears to get them the rest of the way there.
Just two taps of Yargle and Multani puts enough counters on The Eternity Elevator that you'll be able to cast an ExsanguinateExsanguinate or Torment of HailfireTorment of Hailfire that will almost certainly be lethal.
8.Chakram RetrieverChakram Retriever
Who wouldn't want to take this very good boy into space with them? Chakram RetrieverChakram Retriever lets you untap one of your creatures whenever you cast a spell. It may not be the best spacefarer, but it can ensure that another high power creature you control can pour their strength into one of your Spacecrafts repeatedly.
This one does take a bit of building around, but if you've got enough cantrips, then you can get into space at record speed.
7. Dreamtide WhaleDreamtide Whale
For whatever reason, Magic's Whales seem to love it out in space. From The Lunar WhaleThe Lunar Whale to Starbreach WhaleStarbreach Whale, the MTG multiverse is just full of spacefaring cetaceans.
Dreamtide Whale may literally have its head in the clouds, but it's still a great choice to bring along on your next voyage to the stars.
Three mana for seven power is an absolute bargain. While there's a risk that Dreamtide Whale may up and vanish, its ability to proliferate whenever a player casts their second spell is both a reliable way to keep that from happening, and of building up charge counters on all of your Spacecrafts.
6. Wylie Duke, Atiin HeroWylie Duke, Atiin Hero
Some of the cards we've recommended here are useful because they have lots of power. Some of them are good because they help you proliferate. Wylie Duke simply wants to be tapped. He provides a little splash of life gain and some card draw whenever he's tapped down.
Since Wylie Duke has vigilance, you're able to use him to attack and then use him to station once that's taken care of. If you're able to use a card like Thousand-Year ElixirThousand-Year Elixir or Magewright's StoneMagewright's Stone to untap him, then you'll really be cooking.
5. Atraxa, Praetors' VoiceAtraxa, Praetors' Voice
It turns out there's this lesser-known card called AtraxaAtraxa that's actually pretty good. Who knew?
Atraxa's ability to proliferate during every end step will slowly but surely get your ships charged up. Not only that but, just like Wylie Duke, she's able to attack and then station a Spacecraft thanks to vigilance.
Atraxa is the second most popular commander in the game thanks to her versatility. She can lead any deck that cares about counters, from a +1/+1 counter deck, to a planeswalker-focused superfriends deck, to a poison counter slinging infect deck.
Taking off into space is just one more feather in her cap - or rather in her sinewy oil-drenched wings.
4. Dionus, Elvish ArchdruidDionus, Elvish Archdruid
Elves in space! During your turn, when you tap one of your Elves, Dionus allows you to untap them and give them a +1/+1 counter. This works once per Elf, per turn.
While this effect was designed to make Dionus synergize with the many Elven mana dorks out there, it also makes him the ideal leader for Llanowar's space program. With a wide enough board, you'll extend the reach of elfkind to the stars easily enough. By spreading your elves out, you'll get multiple ships charged up in a single turn.
The only reason Dionus isn't higher on this list is his color identity. Only 10 cards with the station ability are available in monogreen, meaning it will be hard to make Dionus the commander of a spacefaring deck. Still, even if Dionus is the only Elf in your deck, he can single-handedly get ships charged up simply by tapping and untapping himself.
He can provide great support to a more colorful Elven commander like Emmara, Soul of the AccordEmmara, Soul of the Accord or Lathril, Blade of the ElvesLathril, Blade of the Elves if you don't want to let the dream of elfball in space die.
3. Derevi, Empyrial TacticianDerevi, Empyrial Tactician
This avian arcanist is yet another iconic commander that can double as a fantastic starship pilot. Derevi's ability to untap your permanents when your attacks connect is already pretty great, but it only gets better in a deck filled up with Spacecrafts.
Derevi is able to untap your creatures in order to enable them to station your Spacecrafts once again, but she can pull off far more. She can untap your station lands, allowing you to generate masses of mana multiple times with Uthros, Titanic GodcoreUthros, Titanic Godcore, or Evendo, Waking HavenEvendo, Waking Haven.
Once your Spacecrafts are online, she can also get them untapped and ready to defend you. Your opponents will have a hard time striking past your Dawnsire, Sunstar DreadnoughtDawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought or your Pinnacle Kill-ShipPinnacle Kill-Ship thanks to Derevi effectively granting them vigilance.
2. Augusta, Dean of OrderAugusta, Dean of Order
The deans of Strixhaven have always encouraged their students to reach for the stars, and with Augusta, Dean of Order by your side, you can make that aspiration quite literal.
The front face of this card, Plargg, Dean of ChaosPlargg, Dean of Chaos, doesn't really bring a lot to the table here, save for access to red if you're using this card as your commander. Fortunately, Augusta is good enough to more than make up for Plargg's shortcomings.
Whenever you attack, Augusta untaps every creature that you control. You can tap them once again to boost their attack, but you won't need to do that. Instead, just wait until your second main phase, and then tap them down again to help get your Spacecrafts ready for action.
1. Karlach, Fury of AvernusKarlach, Fury of Avernus
What's better than untapping all of your creatures? Untapping all of your creatures, and gaining an additional combat step with the potential of sending the creatures that you don't intend to attack with up into space.
Karlach's here, and has absolutely earned the number one spot, but she's serving as a stand-in for a whole archetype of different creatures. Anyone that can untap your board and grant you an additional combat phase, from Aurelia, the WarleaderAurelia, the Warleader to Moraug, Fury of AkoumMoraug, Fury of Akoum, will be fantastic in a Spacecraft-focused deck, maybe even in the Command Zone.
Karlach's been nominated thanks to her low mana value relative to other providers of this effect, and because she works great as a commander thanks to her ability to choose a secondary color via the background mechanic.
Conclusion
Every voyage across the stars must eventually come to an end, and every crew must someday disband. The crewmates flagged up here should do a great job in any Spacecraft-centric decks that you're looking to build.
Of course, with more than 16,000 creatures out there, you're bound to have some favorites that didn't get a mention here. If you've put a crew together that you're just dying to share, or you know a creature that's a fantastic Spacecraft pilot, let us know down in the comments.
