<p>Hey friends. It's Beth, Queen of Cardboard here, with the Precon Upgrade Guide for the <em>Universes Beyond: Doctor Who</em> deck, <em>Timey-Wimey</em>. If you haven't yet had the chance to play this deck, or play against it, get ready for one of the most technically complicated preconstructed decks in <em>Magic: the Gathering</em>.</p>
<p>The deck focuses on time and the adding and removing of time counters. Prior to this release, this particular counter didn't see a lot of use in the game, and when used, was often overlooked. Going through upgrading this deck, I was surprised by the amount of cards in the Universes Within that deal with time counters.</p>
<p>Let's get into it.</p>
<h2>Time. What is it Good For?</h2>

<p>It would be easy to say that the deck flourishes because of how well synergized <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Tenth Doctor" href="#" target="_blank">The Tenth Doctor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rose Tyler" href="#" target="_blank">Rose Tyler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are together. He gives you more time counters, she gets bigger. Swing in for lethal commander damage, game over. While this is still the main way the deck will operate, it takes a true master of time to control how to use the time counters to cast the exact spell at the correct time.</p>
<p>This deck can be super fun; it can also be a huge headache. When choosing what to add, I focused purely on cards that would be useful in the deck <em>and</em> had time counters on them in one way or another. Cards with Suspend and Vanishing were my primary focus.</p>
<p>Pulling from newer sets, this deck feels incredibly complete with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gandalf of the Secret Fire" href="#" target="_blank">Gandalf of the Secret Fire</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> from the <em>Tales of Middle-earth</em> holiday release, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Millennium Calendar" href="#" target="_blank">The Millennium Calendar</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> from <em>The Lost Caverns of Ixalan</em>. Gandalf's ability creates a delayed Rebound-effect on instant and sorcery spells cast from your hand during your opponents' turns, giving them Suspend and adding three time counters. While this isn't an ability I would normally build around, it's a big win in this list.</p>

<p>The amount of time counters you're able to put on cards really inspired me to put in the alternate win condition The Millennium Calendar. While it technically doesn't say "You win the game," I hope draining your opponents for 1,000 life is game-ending. Notably, because it's life loss instead of damage, and it doesn't target, it gets around some protection effects, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The One Ring" href="#" target="_blank">The One Ring</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<p>And adding to the ramp package, I included <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lotus Bloom" href="#" target="_blank">Lotus Bloom</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mox Tantalite" href="#" target="_blank">Mox Tantalite</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<h2>Timecrafting</h2>
<p>In addition to the cards already in the deck, I wanted more ways to add or remove counters as needed. Filling this need is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jhoira&#039;s Timebug" href="#" target="_blank">Jhoira&#039;s Timebug</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Timecrafting" href="#" target="_blank">Timecrafting</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dust of Moments" href="#" target="_blank">Dust of Moments</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. A little out-of-pocket tech is using <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Delay" href="#" target="_blank">Delay</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to counter a spell of yours that an opponent has attempted to counter. Instead of the card going to the graveyard, you'll be able to get it later as a Suspended card.</p>

<p>Notably missing from this list is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jhoira of the Ghitu" href="#" target="_blank">Jhoira of the Ghitu</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and it's totally one you can add in if you want to be able to exile cards from your hand and Suspend them on the board. But I kept in the more thematic card, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Face of Boe" href="#" target="_blank">The Face of Boe</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which fills this slot and is able to put most of the cards in the deck on the board this way.</p>

<h2>Lost to Time</h2>
<p>Removing cards from a deck, especially one as synergistic as the Doctor Who decks, is always difficult. In these Upgrade Guides, I try to add cards that synergize with what the commander is telling me the deck wants to do. This meant cards that didn't add time counters or remove them had to go.</p>

<p>The hardest cut was <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Wedding Ring" href="#" target="_blank">Wedding Ring</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, as this is one of my favorite cards to play in white and I'm constantly looking for more to add to decks. I was so happy it got a reprint, but in this case it had to go, because you'll already be digging through your deck with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Tenth Doctor" href="#" target="_blank">The Tenth Doctor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I also dropped <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jenny, Generated Anomaly" href="#" target="_blank">Jenny, Generated Anomaly</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, even though I personally believe Explore is a busted mechanic.</p>
<p>When I first played against this deck, I mistakenly thought that a Saga lore counters were time counters as well, which would have been great for the deck. But since they're not, they're out of here. And <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Adipose Offspring" href="#" target="_blank">Adipose Offspring</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, although cute, doesn't help our deck do anything with time counters.</p>

<h2>Clockspinning</h2>
<p>With these changes, the deck really spins time. And while you have great supporting cards, I still believe that Rose Tyler is the true star of this show. With being able to get time counters extremely reliably, it's not going to take very many turns for her to get out of control, and I foresee you swinging in for five to nine commander damage on turn three or four with no problems.</p>

<h2>In Conclusion</h2>
<p>This deck is my least favorite to play against out of the four Doctor Who precons because it can become very difficult to keep up with everything going on on the board. With the changes I've made, it's going to continue to spit out Suspended cards and time counters, and it takes an experienced pilot to cast spells and not cast spells at the correct time. Bringing in cards from other sets that also deal with Vanishing and Suspend will give you even more to pay attention to; I, for one, tremble to see this guy in action.</p>

<p>Hey everyone! Beth, Queen of Cardboard here with the Precon Upgrade Guide for <em>Blast From the Past</em> from <em>Universes Beyond: Doctor Who</em>.</p>
<p>With these guides, I normally try to figure out what the original commander wants the deck to do and make the deck as synergistic as possible. But this one's a little different for a couple of reasons. First, the cards in the set are super synergistic already, with each card fitting a theme and going incredibly well in the deck already; for the most part, these decks do what you want them to do. The other reason this deck is different is because, as they currently stand, none of these precons account for the alternate win condition printed in this deck, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gallifrey Stands" href="#" target="_blank">Gallifrey Stands</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. This win condition requires you to have 13 Doctors on the field at the beginning of your upkeep.</p>
<p>It's currently impossible to put all 13 Doctor cards from the set in one deck with any of the commanders released in this universe, because of color identity rules. But, technically speaking, you don't need to have 13 <em>different</em> Doctors. While there is talk of a Secret Lair or the possibility of more Doctor Who cards released in the future, as of the time of writing, we're going to need to use a few tricks to get 13 Doctors on the board at one time.</p>
<p>Let's get into it.</p>
<h2>An Almost Perfect Pairing</h2>

<p>Since we aren't sticking with our normal theme, I tried out a couple of different commander pairings. But ultimately I stuck with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Fourth Doctor" href="#" target="_blank">The Fourth Doctor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sarah Jane Smith" href="#" target="_blank">Sarah Jane Smith</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, because this color pairing allows for the most Doctors currently printed to be in the deck (10), and also because I didn't want to stray too far from the original deck. If we did that, it's no longer an upgrade guide, it's just a deck build.</p>
<p>Additionally, because this deck was already focused on historic spells and was full of spells that were perfect for legends, which our Doctors all are. At the end of the day, I added 20 cards to the deck.</p>

<h2>Is This World Protected?</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Gallifrey Stands"></div></div>
<p>When trying to win via an alternate win condition like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gallifrey Stands" href="#" target="_blank">Gallifrey Stands</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, there's a lot that can go wrong. With this is mind, it's likely that you'll win more via combat than you will with this card; that's just realistic. But there's no reason not to protect your board state. So I've included fan-favorite <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Teferi&#039;s Protection" href="#" target="_blank">Teferi&#039;s Protection</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as a generic failsafe for your board state, as well as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flowering of the White Tree" href="#" target="_blank">Flowering of the White Tree</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Everybody Lives!" href="#" target="_blank">Everybody Lives!</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, in an attempt to keep your board the way that you want it.</p>
<p>The most difficult piece of Gallifrey Stands is that it triggers at the beginning of your upkeep and is a permanent, not an instant that you can cast whenever you wish. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Raff Capashen, Ship&#039;s Mage" href="#" target="_blank">Raff Capashen, Ship&#039;s Mage</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gandalf the White" href="#" target="_blank">Gandalf the White</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allow you to cast historic spells (Raff) or legendary and artifact spells (Gandalf) as if they had flash. This is where you hold Gallifrey Stands until you really need it and cast it right when you can be assured a win. If you don't have Raff, and you've managed to keep the enchantment on the board for a turn around the table, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sally Sparrow" href="#" target="_blank">Sally Sparrow</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will allow you to cast the Doctors you need to win before your upkeep.</p>
<h2>The 13 Doctors</h2>
<p>As I mentioned, you can't actually fit all 13 Doctors printed in this set into the deck due to color identity issues. Only two of the Doctors not already included in this deck could be added, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Eleventh Doctor" href="#" target="_blank">The Eleventh Doctor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Thirteenth Doctor" href="#" target="_blank">The Thirteenth Doctor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. I also mentioned that the deck doesn't have to have 13 different Doctors, it just has to have 13 "Doctors," so I've included a copy and clone package to help you get there.</p>

<p>In the Precon Primers, I mentioned that these decks break some of the fundamental rules of <em>Magic</em>, including the legendary rule. Our clone army will become Doctors for the purpose of Gallifrey Stands. To help you reach the goal, I've also included <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Clara Oswald" href="#" target="_blank">Clara Oswald</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to double trigger your Doctors, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Realmwalker" href="#" target="_blank">Realmwalker</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to predict what's coming, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Relic of Legends" href="#" target="_blank">Relic of Legends</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to utilize your legendary creatures for ramp, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Eleventh Hour" href="#" target="_blank">The Eleventh Hour</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> for a one-time Doctor tutor.</p>
<h2>Crisis of Conscience</h2>
<p>Cuts in any deck are always hard, and this one was no different. I even cut my favorite card in the set, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Displaced Dinosaurs" href="#" target="_blank">Displaced Dinosaurs</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, from this deck. The easiest cuts were the majority of the Sagas and the Saga supporters, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Barbara Wright" href="#" target="_blank">Barbara Wright</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ian Chesterton" href="#" target="_blank">Ian Chesterton</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>The rest of the cuts revolved around combat, which the deck is no longer necessarily trying to do. I also removed the mana dork <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Susan Foreman" href="#" target="_blank">Susan Foreman</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, because this card is really only a consideration when playing Planeschase.</p>

<h2>What Remains</h2>
<p>This deck has a lot of great spells that feel perfect for what we want to do. Some all stars include <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Twice Upon a Time" href="#" target="_blank">Twice Upon a Time</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Five Doctors" href="#" target="_blank">The Five Doctors</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Time Lord Regeneration" href="#" target="_blank">Time Lord Regeneration</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While the goal of this deck isn't combat-based, it's always a good idea to use it as a backup, so I kept <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bessie, the Doctor&#039;s Roadster" href="#" target="_blank">Bessie, the Doctor&#039;s Roadster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sonic Screwdriver" href="#" target="_blank">Sonic Screwdriver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> to ensure that you can hit your opponents when you want to with unblockable damage.</p>
<p>In addition to thematic cards, this deck had sufficient ramp and removal, so I barely needed to touch this package at all.</p>

<h2>In Conclusion</h2>
<p>While it might be difficult to pilot this deck to a Gallifrey Stands win, it does include some pretty powerful legends that can be a hassle for your opponents, and it's not afraid to swing in for combat damage when necessary. If there are more Doctors printed or a five-color commander you prefer, you can easily replace the clones with the other three Doctors not included in this deck to go for the win. I'm really happy with this deck and it felt truly on brand when I was done with it.</p>

<p>Hey friends, Beth, the Queen of Cardboard here, with the Precon Upgrade Guide for Masters of Evil, the Doctor Who Commander Deck. These decks are incredibly powerful and synergistic untouched, so I've chosen to focus on the face commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Davros, Dalek Creator" href="#" target="_blank">Davros, Dalek Creator</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and use Daleks and Cybermen with a little artifact help from the Universes Within.</p>
<p>With the changes we're making, we'll overtake our opponents with an army of artifact creatures, while using their abilities to frustrate our opponents and stall their decks.</p>
<h2>Exterminate!</h2>

<p>Davros is looking for you to make your opponents lose life, but by creating Daleks with menace it swings towards being a combat-based deck that focuses on artifact token creation. In this deck, we're not primarily looking to drain the board via spells or abilities, instead we're going to swing in for big beats and overtake our opponents with a wide board state. Keeping in mind cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Dalek Squadron" href="#" target="_blank">Dalek Squadron</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Dalek Emperor" href="#" target="_blank">The Dalek Emperor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cult of Skaro" href="#" target="_blank">Cult of Skaro</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, I've included <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer" href="#" target="_blank">Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> as a necessary card for this deck.</p>

<p>Brudiclad gives all our creature tokens haste and creates Myr tokens as well. The best part of this card, however, is the ability to turn all tokens into a copy of any token you control. This means the tokens that Brudiclad and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Oni-Cult Anvil" href="#" target="_blank">Oni-Cult Anvil</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> create can also become 3/3 Daleks with menace, or you could choose to lean even further into token creation and turn everything into Dragons, Angels, or even Pegasi. With tokens, there is a myriad of options to choose from.</p>
<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ashad, the Lone Cyberman" href="#" target="_blank">Ashad, the Lone Cyberman</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can create a token copy of the first nonlegendary artifact spell we cast each turn, giving more options for Brudiclad to transform every token into. Imagine a board full of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Auton Soldier" href="#" target="_blank">Auton Soldier</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>s; or don't, it's a little scary, to say the least.</p>
<h2>Artificers Through Time and Space</h2>

<p>With all of the scary things happening on our board, we'll need to be prepared to act quickly and have a defense plan. To lower the cost of our artifact spells I've added in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Etherium Sculptor" href="#" target="_blank">Etherium Sculptor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Enthusiastic Mechanaut" href="#" target="_blank">Enthusiastic Mechanaut</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Because these creatures are also artifacts themselves, it will only add synergy to what the deck is trying to do.</p>
<p>For some protection, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Padeem, Consul of Innovation" href="#" target="_blank">Padeem, Consul of Innovation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Padeem is extremely helpful in not only giving almost the entire board hexproof, but also allowing us to draw if we control the artifact with the highest mana value each upkeep. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Workshop Elders" href="#" target="_blank">Workshop Elders</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, the only other non-artifact creature I added to the deck, gives our artifact creatures flying. If I've learned anything from Limited, it's that flying is good. Many decks struggle to deal with flying, and since we plan to create a large board state, this will help us swing in and kill faster.</p>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Master Transmuter" href="#" target="_blank">Master Transmuter</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows us to pick up any artifact we control and replace it with one in our hand. It's going to feel extremely good to replace a 1/1 Construct with a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Karn, Legacy Reforged" href="#" target="_blank">Karn, Legacy Reforged</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Finally, we have <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge" href="#" target="_blank">Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. While not an artifact himself, Tezzeret helps us cast every other creature spell we have for little to nothing, as well as deal damage to each opponent equal to the number of artifacts we control. Did I say we weren't doing that? Oops. While this isn't the primary goal of the deck, Tezzeret is just too good not to be included here. In addition to the +2 ability, his -3 recurs any artifact from the graveyard to hand, and if we're so lucky as to get to -8 we'll be able to exile the top 10 cards of our library and put any artifact within straight to the battlefield. There's a good chance for big drops here as most of the spells in this deck are, in fact, artifacts.</p>
<p>Rounding out the additions to the deck are our support spells. I focused on adding spells that would provide value without detracting from the overall focus of the deck. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kuldotha Forgemaster" href="#" target="_blank">Kuldotha Forgemaster</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> tutors any artifact directly to the battlefield. Because we'll have to sacrifice something to do so, we also have the additional recursion from <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Scrap Trawler" href="#" target="_blank">Scrap Trawler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Silas Renn, Seeker Adept" href="#" target="_blank">Silas Renn, Seeker Adept</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mystic Forge" href="#" target="_blank">Mystic Forge</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows us to cast off the top of the library or help us by exiling a card to get through the deck faster. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lithoform Engine" href="#" target="_blank">Lithoform Engine</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can copy any spell, ability, or permanent, because one thing is great, but two is better. Finally, I added mana rocks, but these are optional slots that you could choose instead to include even more powerful options.</p>

<h2>Parting of the Ways</h2>
<p>Removing cards from a deck is always hard, especially from decks in this series as they're so synergistic and have meaning and a story within the deck itself. For this deck, I chose to focus on artifacts as the main theme of the deck, which meant that while Cybermen and Daleks had a home, 17 cards in the deck had to go.</p>

<h2>What Remains</h2>
<p>With only 17 changes in this deck, there's a lot of flavor left to be had. All of the original spells are still in the deck as well as our Cybermen. This gives the deck a Cybermen vs. Dalek feel, which flavorfully is fun and interesting. The land base is set to 37, and this is the first time I didn't drop any basics in a precon upgrade. Some things could be tweaked to make this deck even more unique or powerful, and I'd love to see your deck lists below.</p>

<p>Hey friends, Beth, Queen of Cardboard here with another Precon Upgrade article. Today we'll tackle <em>Virtue and Valor</em>, the Selesnya precon from <em>Wilds of Eldraine. </em></p>
<p>As a casual Commander player, I'll be looking for cards that are on theme with the deck, allow for silly plays, and were missed in the original deck list. The biggest issue with this deck was the introduction of a new mechanic, Role tokens, but not using all of the roles available in <em>Wilds of Eldraine. </em>We're going to take a look at what we can include and why these Roles may or may not be the best fit for you.</p>
<p>It's no secret that Enchantress is a popular deck theme. In fact, going through my decks, I have no less than three Enchantress decks, two of them being from the most recent sets, <em>Wilds of Eldraine </em>and <em>Commander Masters. </em>So how do we build this deck in a way that feels fresh and new? Let's get into it.</p>
<h2>Virtuous Anthems</h2>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Ellivere of the Wild Court"></div></div>
<p>Taking a look at the given commander in the deck, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ellivere of the Wild Court" href="#" target="_blank">Ellivere of the Wild Court</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, you'll notice that she has something no other Role-giver has: the ability to give Virtuous Roles.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Royal"></div></div>
<p>If you don't have the ability to flip your phone upside down to read the token, Virturous is a token enchantment - Aura Role that gives the enchanted creature +1/+1 for each enchantment you control. This is an extremely strong enchantment that Ellivere gives to another target creature when she enters the battlefield or attacks. Knowing that we want more enchantments on the battlefield, I'm looking at a go-wide strategy with multiple anthem effects that lean towards pumping our creatures based on the number of enchantments we control. The deck already comes with some great options, like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ethereal Armor" href="#" target="_blank">Ethereal Armor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Eidolon of Countless Battles" href="#" target="_blank">Eidolon of Countless Battles</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ancestral Mask" href="#" target="_blank">Ancestral Mask</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Mantle of the Ancients"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="All That Glitters"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Helm of the Gods"></div></div>
<p>Playing the deck proved to me that <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mantle of the Ancients" href="#" target="_blank">Mantle of the Ancients</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> was not only a perfect fit for this deck, but almost single-handedly won me the game several times. In addition to the great options the deck already included, I added <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="All That Glitters" href="#" target="_blank">All That Glitters</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Helm of the Gods" href="#" target="_blank">Helm of the Gods</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. These two options are perfectly on theme with the deck and add value to anything we've got on the board state. I also found a spot here for <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hope Against Hope" href="#" target="_blank">Hope Against Hope</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, giving us +1/+1 for each creature on board. I kept <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Giant Inheritance" href="#" target="_blank">Giant Inheritance</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> from the original list because I liked its anthem effect, the ability to give the enchanted creature a Monster Role, and its self-recursion.</p>
<h2>If You Blink You'll Miss It</h2>
<p>Depending on the board state, you may not be interested in using Elliver in combat as often as some of the other creatures, since she can't target herself with her ability. So including a blink package to take advantage of her ability while keeping her on the sidelines is a no-brainer. Enchantment cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Teleportation Circle" href="#" target="_blank">Teleportation Circle</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Skybind" href="#" target="_blank">Skybind</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Far Traveler" href="#" target="_blank">Far Traveler</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> not only help the enchantment anthem effects, but also allow you to remove Ellivere from the battlefield and return her for another ETB trigger. Blinking the commander at instant speed with cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ephemerate" href="#" target="_blank">Ephemerate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cloudshift" href="#" target="_blank">Cloudshift</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> also saves her from targeted removal, giving both value and protection.</p>

<p>Some other creatures in the deck that can also take advantage of blinking are <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sun Titan" href="#" target="_blank">Sun Titan</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Syr Armont, the Redeemer" href="#" target="_blank">Syr Armont, the Redeemer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Gylwain, Casting Director" href="#" target="_blank">Gylwain, Casting Director</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cursed Courtier" href="#" target="_blank">Cursed Courtier</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Eidolon of Blossoms" href="#" target="_blank">Eidolon of Blossoms</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Don't forget about <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Siona, Captain of the Pyleas" href="#" target="_blank">Siona, Captain of the Pyleas</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, as her ETB allows for a mini-tutor, looking at the top seven cards of your deck for an Aura. If you're looking to switch out the commander in this deck, this is the pick I'd make.</p>
<div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Siona, Captain of the Pyleas"></div></div>
<p>Filtering through your deck for all of your Auras is a quick way to end the game, and it helps that Siona creates a 1/1 Human Soldier token each time an Aura is attached to a creature. Unlike some other cards seen recently, this ability is not limited to once per turn, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of it. If you're looking to add a two-card infinite combo to this deck, adding <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shielded by Faith" href="#" target="_blank">Shielded by Faith</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> will give you infinite ETB and infinite creature tokens.</p>
<h2>Instant Satisfaction</h2>
<p>The <em>Virtue and Valor</em> precon originally came with seven non-permanent spells. This felt incredibly low and something that needed a bit of help. A large amount of the blink package mentioned above will help protect the board state, but I also included cards that added to either our flavor, Roles, or some more interaction with our opponents.</p>

<p>These new spells might seem a little expensive, but the added value and flavor to the deck are worth it.</p>
<h2>Tough Cuts</h2>
<p>With this deck, there weren't a lot of cards that felt unnecessary, and I went over the list multiple times trying to prune here and adjust there. Even if you choose not to cut all of these cards, I'm confident that the cuts made here helped the deck in the end. There are so many Enchantress cards available that it could be built differently 100 times.</p>

<h2>Powerful Change</h2>

<p><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Light-Paws, Emperor&#039;s Voice" href="#" target="_blank">Light-Paws, Emperor&#039;s Voice</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a card that I've wanted to use in a deck since it was released. It's inexpensive and doubles the value of your Aura casts. With 14 available in the deck aside from the Role tokens, this can get out of control extremely fast. Speaking of out-of-control, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Calix, Guided by Fate" href="#" target="_blank">Calix, Guided by Fate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is going to double the amount of enchantments you have at the ready by copying them when combat damage is dealt by Calix or ANY enchanted creature you control. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sythis, Harvest&#039;s Hand" href="#" target="_blank">Sythis, Harvest&#039;s Hand</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a staple that I included to replace the non-enchantment card draw the deck included previously.</p>

<h2>In Conclusion</h2>
<p>When I first looked at this precon, I was tempted to remove the Role mechanic entirely. I wasn't sure I cared for it, especially since my previous Enchantress decks all wanted multiple enchantments. I was intimidated by the amount of triggers I had to keep up with, and it was "new." Playing the deck makes it clear that Roles are useful and the Virtuous Role is complete gas. It leaves me wondering if they'll be used more in the future and how I'll implement their abilities into other decks.</p>
<p>This deck currently comes in around $100 with upgrades, and I think that's pretty perfect for those looking to spice it up a little without breaking the bank.</p>

<p>Hello readers! My name is Beth, Queen of Cardboard, and this is the Precon Primer for the<em> Wilds of Eldraine Commander</em> deck <em>Virtue and Valor</em>. This deck may seem like just another enchantment deck, especially since it's coming on the heels of the <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/enduring-enchantments-precon-primer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Enduring Enchantments</em> deck</a> from <em>Commander Masters. </em>But if you look at the face commander, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ellivere of the Wild Court" href="#" target="_blank">Ellivere of the Wild Court</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, you'll note that the deck comes with a brand new Aura token type: Roles. Roles may seem confusing at first, but they're a perfect way to bring your token players and enchantment players together with one deck.</p>

<p>Ellivere is a four-cost Selesnya (green/white) 4/4 with a powerful ETB and attack trigger, creating a Virtuous Role token attached to another target creature. In addition to this ability, you're awarded a card draw any time an enchanted creature you control deals combat damage to a player. This is quite possibly one of the most synergistic cards I've seen in a while. And if you're a "cute card" lover like me, I want to tell you this one gets a 10/10.</p>
<p>But what's in a Role?</p>
<h2>Role for Value</h2>
<p>This is one of the few decks that I actually went back and played straight off the list, just to get used to this new mechanic.</p>
<p>There are seven Roles in <em>Wilds of Eldraine.</em> The other six roles are Royal, Sorcerer, Monster, Young Hero, Cursed, and Wicked. While you can only get Virtuous from Elliver, other cards in the the deck give you access to Monster, Sorcerer, Royal, and Young Hero.</p>
<p>So what do these roles do?</p>

Unfortunately, for those who like seeing new cards in action, out of the 15 Role-giving cards available in these colors, this deck only included four.</p>

<h2>Enchantress Staples</h2>
<p>While the <em>Enduring Enchantments</em> deck focuses on Sagas and enchantment creatures, this one is all about Auras. Thanks to a commander that passes these out like candy, the Virtuous role is a star in the deck whether you use Gylwain or Ellivere as your main commander. The Totem Armors <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Snake Umbra" href="#" target="_blank">Snake Umbra</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bear Umbra" href="#" target="_blank">Bear Umbra</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> come in extremely useful when these big creatures ultimately are destroyed. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Umbra Mystic" href="#" target="_blank">Umbra Mystic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> gives Totem Armor to all your Auras, which overcomes board wipes and targeted removal. Constellation also makes a return in this deck, giving you value for each enchantment entering the battlefield.</p>

<p>The two all-stars in this deck are <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Songbirds&#039; Blessing" href="#" target="_blank">Songbirds&#039; Blessing</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mantle of the Ancients" href="#" target="_blank">Mantle of the Ancients</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. If we're being completely honest here, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mantle of the Ancients" href="#" target="_blank">Mantle of the Ancients</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is ridiculously good, especially when you bring back all your enchantments that your opponents thought were gone after casting a piece of key removal. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Songbirds&#039; Blessing" href="#" target="_blank">Songbirds&#039; Blessing</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> allows you to quickly move through the deck, finding more Auras and enchantment creatures to overcome your opponent with.</p>
<h2>Anthems Abound</h2>
<p>The steady strength of this deck is through anthem effects. The Virtuous Role gives the enchanted creature +1/+1 for each enchantment you control. In addition to this Role, there are the Auras <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ethereal Armor" href="#" target="_blank">Ethereal Armor</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Mantle of the Ancients" href="#" target="_blank">Mantle of the Ancients</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ancestral Mask" href="#" target="_blank">Ancestral Mask</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sage&#039;s Reverie" href="#" target="_blank">Sage&#039;s Reverie</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. This deck truly is giving you the option to go both wide and tall, quickly creating several big creatures that can be especially hard to defend against.</p>

<p>In addition to your Aura anthem cards, there are two creatures that have anthem effects for themselves. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Aura Gnarlid" href="#" target="_blank">Aura Gnarlid</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is especially nasty here because it can't be blocked by creatures with lesser power. There's a good chance if you're waiting to put this onto the battlefield that your creatures are also the biggest on the battlefield, giving you a huge, unblockable, killing machine. The Eidolon also pumps itself or can be Bestowed as an Aura to pump another creature. Pair either of these two with flying or trample and you've got two game-ending creatures.</p>
<h2>Interaction, I Barely Know Her</h2>
<p>One weakness of this deck is the lack of instant speed interaction and removal. While the <em>Fae Dominion</em> precon abounds in interaction, this deck has a total of two instants and five sorceries, not including the Adventure card <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Realm-Cloaked Giant" href="#" target="_blank">Realm-Cloaked Giant</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Of the seven removal cards in the deck, three of them cost more than five mana, making removal seem like an afterthought. We're relying purely on overcoming the opponent by playing enchantment after enchantment as quickly as possible.</p>
<h2>Reprints, Not for the Weak</h2>
<p>This deck contains a LOT of reprints. However, in this list, they work. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Transcendent Envoy" href="#" target="_blank">Transcendent Envoy</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Jukai Naturalist" href="#" target="_blank">Jukai Naturalist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> make all your Aura spells cheaper to cast, while <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Starfield Mystic" href="#" target="_blank">Starfield Mystic</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> makes all enchantment spells cheaper. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Destiny Spinner" href="#" target="_blank">Destiny Spinner</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> helps with the lack of interaction in the deck, making the majority of your spells uncounterable. And you've got tons of card draw in reprints like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Enchantress&#039;s Presence" href="#" target="_blank">Enchantress&#039;s Presence</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sage&#039;s Reverie" href="#" target="_blank">Sage&#039;s Reverie</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Snake Umbra" href="#" target="_blank">Snake Umbra</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>While it would have been nice to see these functions on new cards, these reprints provide essential value and make the deck incredibly difficult for opponents to deal with. This is a classic case of "If it's not broke, why fix it?" Or in the <em>Magic </em>world, "If there's a card that does it, why make a new one?"</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>While this deck tries to introduce a new mechanic, there are several Roles and cards missing that would have been easy includes in this list. While Ellivere is powerful and a perfect fit for this deck, you could interchange the face commander and alternate commander with ease, as Gylwain provides almost as much value as Ellivere. The Virtuous Role being applied multiple times a turn is insane, and with a flicker package you're going to make and destroy enemies on the board in a succinct manner. It makes sense that this Role is only available via one card in all of <em>Wilds of Eldraine</em>.</p>

Ever since the first <em>Masters</em> set, players have joked that any supplemental set from <em>Jumpstart</em> to <em>Commander Legends</em> is secretly <strong>the</strong> <em>Commander Masters;</em> with <a href="https://commandersherald.com/commander-masters-second-looks-part-1/">reprints</a> aimed at keeping staples priced low for Commander players. Finally, those jokes are no longer necessary, because this set really is <em>Commander Masters </em>(CMM). One of the best things about reprints is their accessibility, whether that's in buying price or their proven history in the format. If you're a long-time player eager for new reprint prices or a <a href="https://commandersherald.com/your-new-to-commander-guide-to-the-lord-of-the-rings-tales-of-middle-earth/">beginner looking to finally invest in the format</a>, here's your beginner's guide for what to look out for in <em>Commander Masters.</em></p>
<h2>Choose Your Fighter</h2>
<p>As with every set, <em>Commander Masters</em> is accompanied by <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/?s=commander+masters+precon&amp;cat=4">four preconstructed Commander decks</a>. Unlike a normal set, however, they are not necessarily connected to the themes and mechanics of the main set. Instead, they are supplemental and standalone, allowing the designers to get old characters onto cards and revisit fan-favorite mechanics and creature types.</p>
<h3>Eldrazi Unbound</h3>

<p>One of Magic's signature villains, <a href="https://commanderspellbook.com/search/?q=eldrazi">the Eldrazi,</a> make their return in <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/eldrazi-unbound-precon-primer/?utm_source=edhrec&amp;utm_medium=article_preview">Eldrazi Unbound</a>, led by <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Zhulodok, Void Gorger" href="#" target="_blank">Zhulodok, Void Gorger</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. The deck leans heavily into casting big colorless spells, as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Zhulodok, Void Gorger" href="#" target="_blank">Zhulodok, Void Gorger</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> lets them <em>Cascade</em> twice, allowing you to chain together powerful spells like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="It That Betrays" href="#" target="_blank">It That Betrays</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flayer of Loyalties" href="#" target="_blank">Flayer of Loyalties</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rise of the Eldrazi" href="#" target="_blank">Rise of the Eldrazi</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Colorless decks often struggle with card advantage in Commander, and double <em>Cascade</em> triggers are a great way to work around this. The alternate commander in this deck, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate" href="#" target="_blank">Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, also addresses the card advantage problem by <em>Manifesting</em> cards from your library when it dies. You can then use those colorless tokens to attack or flip over into actual creatures with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Ugin&#039;s Mastery" href="#" target="_blank">Ugin&#039;s Mastery</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">Sliver Swarm</h3>

<p>Another <a href="https://commandersherald.com/socially-anxious-sliver-makes-family-worry/">iconic <em>Magic</em> creature type</a>, <a href="https://commanderspellbook.com/search/?q=sliver">Slivers</a>, reappear with a brand new five color commander: <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sliver Gravemother" href="#" target="_blank">Sliver Gravemother</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. Slivers grow stronger the more of them you have, so being able to gain three copies of the best ones with the ability <em>Encore</em> seems like an easy recipe for success. Some Slivers like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Cloudshredder Sliver" href="#" target="_blank">Cloudshredder Sliver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> don't do anything extra in multiples, but others are more impactful. Multiple copies of <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Harmonic Sliver" href="#" target="_blank">Harmonic Sliver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Lazotep Sliver" href="#" target="_blank">Lazotep Sliver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> all give each Sliver you control multiple instances of their effects. If you'd like to spread this power to creatures of other types, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rukarumel, Biologist" href="#" target="_blank">Rukarumel, Biologist</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> turns all of your creatures into Slivers. You can also use Rukarumel for <a href="https://commanderspellbook.com/search/?q=Rukarumel">other typal shenanigans</a>, similar to <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Arcane Adaptation" href="#" target="_blank">Arcane Adaptation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>.</p>

<p>Thanks to <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/enduring-enchantments-precon-primer/?utm_source=edhrec&amp;utm_medium=article_preview">Enduring Enchantments</a>, we finally have two excellent Abzan enchantment commanders. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Anikthea, Hand of Erebos" href="#" target="_blank">Anikthea, Hand of Erebos</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> wants to pull enchantments out of the graveyard as 3/3 creatures with menace. Sagas help keep your graveyard full, while <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Eidolon of Blossoms" href="#" target="_blank">Eidolon of Blossoms</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Narci, Fable Singer" href="#" target="_blank">Narci, Fable Singer</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> help reload your hand. Those tokens also trigger <em>Constellation</em> effects, such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Archon of Sun&#039;s Grace" href="#" target="_blank">Archon of Sun&#039;s Grace</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Boon of the Spirit Realm" href="#" target="_blank">Boon of the Spirit Realm</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <a href="https://commanderspellbook.com/search/?q=archon%20of%20sun%27s%20grace">making your army of tokens truly deadly</a>.</p>

This deck (rather obviously focused around planeswalkers) wants to slowly accumulate value through their activated abilities until you finally win. This could be with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sarkhan the Masterless" href="#" target="_blank">Sarkhan the Masterless</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sparkshaper Visionary" href="#" target="_blank">Sparkshaper Visionary</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> turning all your planeswalkers into flying creatures, an army of tokens buffed by <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Elspeth, Sun&#039;s Champion" href="#" target="_blank">Elspeth, Sun&#039;s Champion</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, or just having both <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chandra, Awakened Inferno" href="#" target="_blank">Chandra, Awakened Inferno</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chandra, Legacy of Fire" href="#" target="_blank">Chandra, Legacy of Fire</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> in play.</p>

This is a great opportunity to get your hands on powerful cards that have been historically expensive. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deflecting Swat" href="#" target="_blank">Deflecting Swat</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Deadly Rollick" href="#" target="_blank">Deadly Rollick</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Fierce Guardianship" href="#" target="_blank">Fierce Guardianship</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are all getting reprinted, along with each of the <a href="https://scryfall.com/search?q=mv%3D2+medallion">Medallions</a>. <p>Especially for players who've <a href="https://commandersherald.com/your-new-to-commander-guide-to-the-lord-of-the-rings-tales-of-middle-earth/">recently gotten into Commander</a>, <em>Commander Masters</em> might be the perfect time to snag old Commander cards you may have missed the first time around. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Meren of Clan Nel Toth" href="#" target="_blank">Meren of Clan Nel Toth</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="The Ur-Dragon" href="#" target="_blank">The Ur-Dragon</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are both powerful commanders from previous preconstructed decks. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sun Quan, Lord of Wu" href="#" target="_blank">Sun Quan, Lord of Wu</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chainer, Dementia Master" href="#" target="_blank">Chainer, Dementia Master</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are both old cards that can't be reprinted easily outside of a release like this.</p>
<h2>Drafting A Deck</h2>
<p><em>Commander Masters</em> was also designed with the intention to <a href="https://magic.gg/news/commander-masters-draft-primer">draft Commander decks</a> to play against your friends. This works a lot like a normal draft. Each player starts with three packs which you pass around the table in alternating left-right order. However, each pack in CMM has 20 cards, and you pick two cards at a time. Additionally, at the end of the draft you'll build a 60-card deck that can include as many copies of any card as you drafted. Otherwise, normal Commander rules apply. All your cards must be in your commander's color identity and your starting life is 40.</p>
<p>There's just one more small exception. For the purposes of draft, every mono-color legendary creature is considered to have <a href="https://edhrec.com/partners">Partner</a>. This helps make sure you have enough useful cards, and makes sure everyone isn't fighting over a small pool of multi-color options.</p>
<p>Drafting can be a great way for established players to re-ignite their passion and <a href="https://commandersherald.com/conquering-the-commander-cube-balancing-your-cube-pt-1/">deckbuilding creativity</a> in the game. Being forced to use cards you wouldn't otherwise and apply cards in unique new ways is a great way to get a fresh take on <em>Magic</em> and the Commander format. Playing Sealed Constructed is also a great way to introduce friends to the game. The limited card pool keeps things comprehensible, while still allowing for plenty of personal customization. It also ensures that you don't win just because you have more "good" cards.</p>
<h2>The Gathering</h2>
<p><a href="https://commandersherald.com/set-review-commander-masters/"><em>Commander Masters</em></a> is a great set for remembering that <em>Magic</em> is really about "the Gathering". Of course, some of us play to win. Some of us just want the shiniest cards or the craziest deck at the table. Thankfully, <em>Commander Masters</em> really does let you have it all. And whether you pick up the precons, organize a draft, or even just buy singles to add to your decks, <a href="https://edhrec.com/articles/how-to-get-your-friends-into-edh-with-commander-masters/?utm_source=edhrec&amp;utm_medium=article_preview">you can't play Commander without a group of friends</a>.</p>

Last time we talked about general strategies that were included in the deck, so now we'll go over some cards that we can change to increase the synergies in the deck. <h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Swarmyard</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Sliver Gravemother"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Before we get into the upgrades let’s go over our face commander. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Sliver Gravemother" href="#" target="_blank">Sliver Gravemother</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a Sliver typal commander that gives us access to all five colors. This gives us a multitude of support cards that we can use and we need to get some of those to aid in our strategy. Sliver Gravemother gives us the option to give the Slivers in our graveyard Encore X. This makes it so we have a backup strategy later in the game where we can make and copy our strongest buff in the yard for the turn. As I stated in the Primer, this deck has a solid creature suite, but the support cards could use a bit of work. Making the deck more consistent is my goal so that we can have an easier time throughout the game. </span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Supporting The Swarm</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are a few cards that I would like to get added to the deck so that we can smooth out the experience. One of the cards that I love for the deck is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Elven Chorus" href="#" target="_blank">Elven Chorus</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. It’s four mana but it gives us both card advantage and mana fixing, which the deck sorely needs in its current iteration. To further help with the mana of the deck, let’s also add a <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chromatic Lantern" href="#" target="_blank">Chromatic Lantern</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> so that we can have access to all our colors and get a bit of ramp out of the exchange. To get a bit more card advantage, I'm also adding in <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Horn of the Mark" href="#" target="_blank">Horn of the Mark</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> so that we get rewarded for being the aggro deck that we want to be.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Elven Chorus"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Chromatic Lantern"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Horn of the Mark"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Next we're going to add some basic draw spells so that we can more consistently hit our land drops and spells. Cards like <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Chart a Course" href="#" target="_blank">Chart a Course</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Painful Truths" href="#" target="_blank">Painful Truths</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Shamanic Revelation" href="#" target="_blank">Shamanic Revelation</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> go a long way to give us some consistent draws and make it so that our deck plays a bit more consistently. Card draw is a vital part of an aggro deck, making it so that we always have gas in the tank to overrun our opponents.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Chart a Course"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Painful Truths"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Shamanic Revelation"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lastly, there are a couple of cards that I want to add because they're neat. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Rhythm of the Wild" href="#" target="_blank">Rhythm of the Wild</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a haste enabler and gives us a way to pump our creatures so that they can have a stronger presence. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Patriarch’s Bidding" href="#" target="_blank">Patriarch’s Bidding</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> does an impression of Sliver Gravemother and brings back our Slivers from the graveyard, giving it a high ceiling for us. I also wanted extra ramp and removal, and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Pir’s Whim" href="#" target="_blank">Pir’s Whim</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> can be both. It gives us any land while getting rid of artifacts or enchantments on our opponents' side of the board.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Swarm Adjacent</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here we’ll go over some of the cards that'll be cut from the deck. First on my list is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crippling Fear" href="#" target="_blank">Crippling Fear</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. It's a subpar board wipe that won’t remove our opponents' creatures if they get too big, so I would rather have a card that would definitely deal with the problem. The next card is <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Decimate" href="#" target="_blank">Decimate</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, which has the problem of having to have four different targets. It's a dead card if, for example, there are no enchantments on the board. Or an unfortunate card if you control the only enchantment and really don't want to destroy it. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Descendants’ Fury" href="#" target="_blank">Descendants’ Fury</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a bit lackluster to me. It seems to reward us for being ahead and incentivizes us to give up our board state for a random creature for our deck. This just isn't how I prefer to play the game, so I would like to avoid it.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Crippling Fear"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Decimate"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Descendants’ Fury"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Windfall" href="#" target="_blank">Windfall</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> is a card I'm not exactly happy to see as well. We do have a commander that cares a bit about the graveyard but it isn't the general strategy that we're doing, so I feel this is a wasted slot. I’m also cutting some of the redundant Slivers to make a bit of space for support for the deck. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Crypt Sliver" href="#" target="_blank">Crypt Sliver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Bonesplitter Sliver" href="#" target="_blank">Bonesplitter Sliver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> have other cards in the deck that do what they do, but better. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Next let's go over what I would do with the deck if there was no budget.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Budget Breaking Swarm</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here at Scrap Trawlers we're a budget focused group, but this deck being five colors means the mana base lends itself to being more expensive. In particular one of the first upgrades you can do here is Shock lands, such as <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Steam Vents" href="#" target="_blank">Steam Vents</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Hallowed Fountain" href="#" target="_blank">Hallowed Fountain</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>, etc. Fixing the mana issues in this deck should be your first priority. Even going as far as running the Pain lands that represent our three highest colors.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="edhrecp__cards"><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Steam Vents"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Hallowed Fountain"></div><div class="edhrecp__card-container" name="Blood Crypt"></div></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We need a couple of protection spells that actually got reprints in the main set. <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Heroic Intervention" href="#" target="_blank">Heroic Intervention</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> and <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Flawless Maneuver" href="#" target="_blank">Flawless Maneuver</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span> are some amazing spells that can give our board that staying power that it needs.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lastly, I am yet again asking for a typal deck that comes with <span class="edhrecp__link"><a class="edhrecp__link-a" content="Kindred Discovery" href="#" target="_blank">Kindred Discovery</a><span class="edhrecp__link-image"></span></span>. The draw power is just astounding, so it’s an inclusion that needs to be considered in the deck.</span></p>
