Singleton Guild Wheel — Chandler and the Binglorious Basterdz

This article is part 11 of a 10 part series covering the Singleton Guild Wheel Project, a 10 totally real and not fakedeck project where there is only a single copy of any non-basic land among the 10 decks. Each deck uses the color combination of a different Ravnican guild. The methodology is introduced here and expanded upon each week by featuring a deck formed using part of the Wheel. Since the deck building process is iterative, expect featured decks to change in between articles. For the complete introduction to the project, see our first article here. In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: The police, who investigate crime, and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories.

Read it and weep affinity players!

Back in everyone's filthy casual days, we may or may not have played completely awkward decks that we didn't quite remember. Rummaging through my old collection of decks I stumbled across my old Chandler deck, and boy was it a doozie. Homelands was probably the best set in the history of Magic, and 13-year old me couldn't buy enough of those sweet sweet packs of eight cards each.

I updated the deck to add LOADS of synergy and created a pseudo cast of all-stars to really blow away my opponents. People would always say "Matt, could you PLEASE not play your Chandler deck this time? My Juggernaut just can't take the abuse anymore! Plus, how in the world am I supposed to kill your Norin the Wary!?"

A common response to me playing this deck

Well folks, today I'm going to show you the bestest of the besterest deck I've ever made in my life. This is the exact decklist that I ran when I was 13 in 2000, so some of the cards might seem old or out of place. The deck was my pride and joy though. Something that I thought something of my child, and I was it's parent.

Some final things you should know about this deck

  • Phoenixes are totally busted in this format. People just can't answer them AT ALL. They keep coming back and coming back. My friends would try to house ban all of my phoenixes because they're just too good, so I told them I wouldn't play them anymore if they could beat me in a game of pogs. Since I am king of pogs, I never lost and always got to play my phoenix pets
  • The key to this deck: X-spells. Since you can choose how much damage to deal, sometimes up to 35, it's really in your best interest to maximize the number of x-spells in your decks at all times. Banefire] even becomes uncounterable, which is just too perfect. If you're not playing that card in EVERY SINGLE DECK you're just wrong and I don't care what you say.
  • My friends really like mill decks, and since I didn't want to make a new deck, I just played Norin the Wary with Altar of the Brood to mill them out. Since Norin was a kill-on-sight type card and they couldn't ever actually kill him, he just milled them out instead. Man, 1997 was super fun for Magic cards.
  • If you want to build a deck like this and need any advice, I'm probably not the best person to ask. I'm not good at creating my own stuff.

Thank you everyone for taking this seriously. I know we all had our silly decks when we were casual, but this was mine and it's very personal to me. I'm glad I got the chance to share this with you. You all mean a lot to me. Did you ever know that you're my hero?
