Krang, the All-PowerfulKrang, the All-Powerful | Art by Yuhong Ding
Looking through the card gallery for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I was struck by the appearance of Krang, the All-PowerfulKrang, the All-Powerful. Sure, we've seen plenty of doubling effects before, but never one that cared specifically about drawing cards! We've seen doublers that care about specific creature types, the casting of certain spells, and even the use of certain emblems. But Krang is a unique addition to this group.
So I thought it it would be a good time to rank all of the trigger doublers that Commander players have access to. For a full list of the cards examined in this article, check out this Scryfall link.
I'll be grouping similar cards together, as it's hard to decouple trigger doublers that affect the game in the same way. There are 34 cards on this list, so let's see what's in store!
33-34. Hama Pashar, Ruin SeekerHama Pashar, Ruin Seeker and Dungeon DelverDungeon Delver
While the dungeons are fun game pieces, particularly in Commander, they're far from the strongest thing that can be doubled in our format. It feels great to get two triggers off of the last room of Undercity, a lot of setup is required to get there.
Both of these cards are great inclusions in decks themed around sprinting through any of Commander's four dungeons as fast as possible, but lack utility outside of that.
32. The MasamuneThe Masamune
This Equipment seems interesting on its face. It's one of the first cards to interact directly with emblems! But there's only one emblem in all of Magic that cares about creatures dying (the one created by Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIERSephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER upon transforming into Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel).
The Masamune is a nice card in Sephiroth decks specifically, but I'd rather just run a copy of Blood ArtistBlood Artist for the same effect with more consistency anywhere else.
31. Panoptic ProjektorPanoptic Projektor
This artifact provides a similar amount of mana to Thran DynamoThran Dynamo. Then, it cares about turning face-down permanents into face-up permanents. There are a full 125 cards that have some effect upon being turned face-up or seeing other cards turned face-up, but very few of them benefit from the Projektor. Ainok SurvivalistAinok Survivalist, Hooded HydraHooded Hydra, and Roshan, Hidden MagisterRoshan, Hidden Magister are a few of the best options.
Morph (along with its variants disguise and cloak) has seen some support in recent sets, but not enough to bump this artifact any higher on our list.
30. Clara OswaldClara Oswald
There are just 19 Doctors in Magic. Clara makes for a nice, if generic, companion for these cards. Because none of the Doctors synergize super well with each other, though, Clara is essentially a six-mana version of Spark DoubleSpark Double that you've always got access to in the command zone. She can double the triggers that we get off of our deck's leader, but won't do much else. That's just not very exciting.
None of the Doctors available for play as commanders are blowing my hair back, which in turn means that Clara Oswald doesn't impress me much either.
29. Wayta, Trainer ProdigyWayta, Trainer Prodigy
Wayta was clearly designed with the enrage mechanic in mind. There's 22 cards with enrage available in Commander as of the time of writing, with some all-stars like Apex AltisaurApex Altisaur, PolyraptorPolyraptor, and Ranging RaptorsRanging Raptors topping the EDHREC rankings. Wayta also interacts favorably with cards like Stuffy DollStuffy Doll, Brash TaunterBrash Taunter, and Pain for AllPain for All, giving pilots access to some interesting play patterns.
She's far from the most interesting card on our list, but she does allow Commander players that really liked the original Ixalan block to play with their favorite Dinosaurs!
28. Twinflame TravelersTwinflame Travelers
So many of Commander's iconic cards just so happen to be Elementals. MulldrifterMulldrifter and Avenger of ZendikarAvenger of Zendikar, for example, are staples of the format that can be boosted by Twinflame Travelers. It's rare for typal trigger doublers to be super strong, sadly, but this new card from Lorwyn Eclipsed will certainly see play in decks helmed by Horde of NotionsHorde of Notions, many of the five Omnaths, and even the new Ashling, the LimitlessAshling, the Limitless.
27. Katara, the FearlessKatara, the Fearless
Were it not for all of the Allies printed in Avatar, Katara would be even lower on this list. While paying just three mana for a doubling effect is quite nice, most of the Allies that Commander players have access to aren't very good. This deck often ends up feeling more like a well-made Avatar limited deck than a full-blown Commander deck, which sadly lands it lower on our list.
26. Splinter, Radical RatSplinter, Radical Rat
Splinter works extremely well alongside Yuriko, the Tiger's ShadowYuriko, the Tiger's Shadow to drain opponents for a ton of life, Prosperous ThiefProsperous Thief to generate absurd amounts of TreasureTreasure tokens, or Ingenious InfiltratorIngenious Infiltrator to keep our hand full. But his color identity means he won't fit in the 99 of most Ninja decks, and would need to lead his own decks.
The question then arises, is Splinter a better Ninja commander than Yuriko? The answer is no, but he's a fun alternative for those pilots that want a slower typal deck!
25. Sanctum of AllSanctum of All
This is the first five-color card on our list. It lets us fetch any Shrine onto the battlefield on each of our upkeeps, which is a strong ability, especially given the toolbox nature of Shrines.
However, Shrines aren't super powerful individually. It'll take a few turns for Sanctum of All to really get rolling, but it's hard to stop once we've got a critical mass of enchantments.
24. Gandalf the WhiteGandalf the White
While Gandalf does work with legendary permanents, most of the decks that he helms are themed around artifacts. Acting as a Shimmer MyrShimmer Myr and a trigger doubler that can be cast at instant speed, Gandalf does a lot for the decks he finds himself in.
It's so cool to see a trigger doubler that makes Scrap TrawlerScrap Trawler into an even better card! As if it needed any help...
23. Krang, the All-PowerfulKrang, the All-Powerful
Blue is the best color for drawing cards, which benefits Krang greatly. We've seen a ton of cards that care about players drawing more than one card per turn, like Faerie MastermindFaerie Mastermind and Orcish BowmastersOrcish Bowmasters, rise to prevalence in Commander. Krang even accelerates win conditions like Psychosis CrawlerPsychosis Crawler!
I think this Utrom Robot will find a home in Wheels decks as a payoff for all the cards being drawn by all players.
22. Felix Five-BootsFelix Five-Boots
Saboteurs, or cards that trigger when we deal damage to an opponent, have been a strong strategy in Commander for a long time. Felix doubles the effectiveness of all the Cold-Eyed SelkieCold-Eyed Selkies and Trygon PredatorTrygon Predators out there, while also being a hulking 5/4 with menace himself.
Felix doesn't work super well in the 99 of most decks; he's better suited for the command zone. But he's super powerful when built around properly. I'll take any excuse I can get to play Flying MenFlying Men in Commander, so I'm happy to place Felix near the middle of our list.
21. Naban, Dean of IterationNaban, Dean of Iteration
Naban is most well known for being a part of extra-turn chaining combos alongside ArchaeomancerArchaeomancer, but he provides a ton of value as a typal commander too.
From SpellseekerSpellseeker to Snapcaster MageSnapcaster Mage, some of the best creatures that decks have access to can trigger twice with Naban on the battlefield. It's neat to see a card that costs just have so many different applications.
20. Harmonic ProdigyHarmonic Prodigy
Speaking of two-drops that have tons of different uses, Harmonic Prodigy wants to be surrounded with both Wizards and Shamans. From Eternal WitnessEternal Witness to Archmage EmeritusArchmage Emeritus, and from Reclamation SageReclamation Sage to Pollywog ProdigyPollywog Prodigy, some of the best creatures in Commander get even better when paired with the Prodigy.
Harmonic Prodigy is often included to double the effectiveness of a commander like Delina, Wild MageDelina, Wild Mage, but can also shine in spell-slinging decks that happen to have a few value engines that are Shamans or Wizards.
18-19. Teysa KarlovTeysa Karlov and Drivnod, Carnage DominusDrivnod, Carnage Dominus
As an Aristocrats player myself, I admit that I may be slightly biased towards these cards. But both Drivnod and Teysa accelerate our Blood ArtistBlood Artist and Doomed TravelerDoomed Traveler-type cards to such a degree that I feel justified placing them in this slot on our list.
Each of these cards has their own benefits in the command zone. Teysa provides access to both and while giving our creature tokens some extremely relevant keywords, and Drivnod can three-shot a player for a commander damage victory. While Teysa does see a bit more attention from Commander players, both of these cards are fantastic death trigger doublers.
17. Cloud, Midgar MercenaryCloud, Midgar Mercenary
A tutor and a trigger doubler? For just ? It's hard to ask for more from a single card. Cloud drastically improves the effectiveness of Buster SwordBuster Sword, Sword of the AnimistSword of the Animist, and even all of the Swords of X and Y!
If we manage to blink Cloud a few times, or attatch a Genji GloveGenji Glove to him, the game will almost certainly go our way. Cloud (and every card following him on this list) are truly game changing.
16. Mirror Room // Fractured RealmMirror Room // Fractured Realm
While is a lot to ask for a trigger doubler, this is the only non-conditional doubler on our list. This enchantment essentially gives us a second copy of our battlefield for seven mana, which seems fantastic in decks that can pay its cost effectively.
It's also very nice that the other half of this enchantment still provides some utility. The fact that this Room has usefulness at multiple slots on our mana curve is not to be underestimated!
15. Echoes of EternityEchoes of Eternity
This colorless enchantment is expensive, but it does two very impressive things for : copy all of our colorless permanents' triggers while also creating more colorless permanents. This kindred card is primarily found in Eldrazi decks, which have no problem creating the six mana we'll need to cast Echoes. Then we get to copy the cast triggers of our Eldrazi while also getting more Eldrazi!
This is most certainly a "win-more" card that helps us snowball to victory, but it's strong enough for me to look past that.
13-14. Ancient GreenwardenAncient Greenwarden and Traveling ChocoboTraveling Chocobo
Land-focused decks tend to be extremely strong in Commander. In our format, having access to more mana than our opponents often means that we'll get to cast better spells and close out games more quickly. Both of these creatures double the effectiveness of our landfall abilities while giving us access to more lands than we typically should.
With Ancient Greenwarden, we can even loop Strip MineStrip Mine to deny our opponents mana! Traveling Chocobo is a nice creature for Bird typal decks, but that's far less notable than its synergy with lands.
12. Annie Joins UpAnnie Joins Up
More and more legendary creatures get printed every set. This is especially true with Universes Beyond products that often put many of the source material's most iconic characters onto cardstock. Annie Joins Up doubles the effectiveness of those legendary creatures, while also removing an opponent's creature on ETB (enter the battlefield).
Its casting cost is slightly restrictive, but decks that play this enchantment have access to the mana fixing that cards often provide. This card is currently in 12.6% of eligble decks on EDHREC, but I expect that number to rise as more UB sets bring exciting legendary creatures to the format.
11. Veyran, Voice of DualityVeyran, Voice of Duality
GuttersnipeGuttersnipe is already a spooky creature to sit across the table from. Now imagine a Guttersnipe that deals four damage instead of two! Veyran turns all of the little pingers and card advantage pieces that spellslinger decks normally have access to into extremely spooky value engines, while also being a potent Voltron threat herself.
Much like I expect Annie Joins Up to become more powerful with upcoming set releases, I expect Veyran to gain some steam from our upcoming return to Strixhaven.
8-10. Isshin, Two Heavens as OneIsshin, Two Heavens as One, Windcrag SiegeWindcrag Siege, and Wulfgar of Icewind DaleWulfgar of Icewind Dale
Aggressive, combat-oriented decks can sometimes struggle against the midrange value piles that so many Commander players bring to their pods. But each of these cards allow pilots to break through board stalls and generate massive amounts of damage. They can churn out creature tokens with Adeline, Resplendent CatharAdeline, Resplendent Cathar, steal valuable spells with Etali, Primal StormEtali, Primal Storm, and even drain out the table with Brutal HordechiefBrutal Hordechief.
Every combat step presents significant danger for opponents facing off against any one of these trigger doublers.
4-7. Starfield VocalistStarfield Vocalist, PanharmoniconPanharmonicon, Virtue of KnowledgeVirtue of Knowledge, and Yarok, the DesecratedYarok, the Desecrated
These cards are where most people's minds go when they think of cards that double up on abilities. Commander players love abilities that trigger upon entering the battlefield, like Quantum RiddlerQuantum Riddler, Gray Merchant of AsphodelGray Merchant of Asphodel and Imperial RecruiterImperial Recruiter. These cards are fundamental to so many Commander decks, which makes this group of trigger doublers powerful across a wide variety of situations.
More recently printed versions, like Starfield VocalistStarfield Vocalist, show that Wizards of the Coast is still willing to innovate in this space.
3. Elesh Norn, Mother of MachinesElesh Norn, Mother of Machines
There's a reason why Elesh Norn sits above those other ETB doublers: she also shuts off our opponents' ETBs. That means they can't ramp off of Wood ElvesWood Elves, can't protect their creatures with Talon Gates of MadaraTalon Gates of Madara, and can't even combo off with Dualcaster MageDualcaster Mage. While her trigger denial ability won't be relevant in every single game, it'll typically prove to be a nuisance for at least one player in a pod.
As a side note, Elesh Norn can even defend our life total well. As a 4/7 with vigilance, she can be a potent blocker.
2. Delney, Streetwise LookoutDelney, Streetwise Lookout
Some of the best creatures in Commander have power two or less. Delney works particularly well with Esper SentinelEsper Sentinel, all but guaranteeing we'll draw at least one card per turn rotation. Other great pairings include Loran of the Third PathLoran of the Third Path for some extra removal, Archivist of OghmaArchivist of Oghma for even more card advantage, and even Voice of VictoryVoice of Victory for some token generation.
Delney makes regular appearances in Bracket 5 games, letting Tymna the WeaverTymna the Weaver pilots draw more cards and Derevi, Empyrial TacticianDerevi, Empyrial Tactician pilots untap even more permanents. This Human Scout has certainly earned a slot this high on our list, for their utility in the command zone and in the 99.
1. Roaming ThroneRoaming Throne
This artifact creature is by far the most flexible card on our list. It fits into any color identity, pairs with any creature type, and can even be used as a second copy of our commander if we're that reliant on its triggered abilities.
Roaming Throne is most frequently seen in Dragon decks, Ninja decks, and Dinosaur decks. It also sees play as an artifact Dwarf alongside Magda, Brazen OutlawMagda, Brazen Outlaw, allowing for easy combo victories. There's nothing this card can't do, and there's seldom a typal commander that doesn't want this card in their 99.
As if all of that weren't enough, Roaming Throne even has ward ! This creature has been a staple of Commander since the day it was released, and easily earned the number one slot on this list.
Conclusion
This was a fun one, folks! I'll admit, I did find it difficult to place typal trigger doubling cards on this list with a high degree of accuracy. Sure, Doctors may not be super powerful. But, how do I compare Elementals and Wizards?
If you disagree with the placement of your favorite creature type's trigger doubler, sound off in the comments below. I'm eager to hear why Clara Oswald actually deserved a spot in the top five!
