Cards To Add
Balmor, Battlemage CaptainBalmor, Battlemage Captain
Even though this is kind of a Spellslinger deck, it's also pretty aggro. So pumping creatures and giving them trample ensures we're doing everything we can to get damage in when we attack with our Elementals.
Idol of OblivionIdol of Oblivion
Some cheap, repeatable card draw. What's not to love?
Third Path IconoclastThird Path Iconoclast
The Elementals are great, but we may need a bit more. Iconoclast will be especially great if we get Brudiclad, Telchor EngineerBrudiclad, Telchor Engineer on the field, turning these 1/1s into something much more threatening.
GuttersnipeGuttersnipe
It's a classic for a reason. We're not casting tons of spells per turn, but two damage for each instant and sorcery we cast will still help move the game along.
Indomitable CreativityIndomitable Creativity
This sorcery is incredibly versatile in this deck. We can turn our tokens into something better, turn opponents' threats into something worse, and make big Elementals with Rootha by pumping big mana into the cost.
Disrupt DecorumDisrupt Decorum
One of the best spells ever printed in red, this gives us a turn off from being attacked. Sometimes a turn is all you need to take over the game.
Irencrag FeatIrencrag Feat
A four-mana spell into a seven-mana spell is exactly what this deck wants to do.
Mirrormind CrownMirrormind Crown
Let's turn Rootha's Elementals into something better, like Manaform HellkiteManaform Hellkite or Renegade BullRenegade Bull.
Mizzix of the IzmagnusMizzix of the Izmagnus
Mizzix will easily give us huge discounts on our biggest spells. Should've been in the precon.
Ashling's CommandAshling's Command
I like that Ashling's Command can copy Rootha's Elemental tokens, but the other modes can also be extremely beneficial.
Tellah, Great SageTellah, Great Sage
More tokens and card draw. Tellah will fit right in.
Full ThrottleFull Throttle
Since Rootha's token making is a combat trigger, we'll benefit greatly from extra combats. Full Throttle gives us two.
Blatant ThieveryBlatant Thievery
For seven mana we get the best thing off of each opponent's board, plus a 7/7 Elemental from Rootha. Not bad.
Brass's BountyBrass's Bounty
Gotta love a spell that pays for itself. We can use the Treasures right away, or bank them for a later turn.
One with the MultiverseOne with the Multiverse
Tired of paying market price for those big spells? One with the Multiverse has got you covered. Also, I like this enchantment better than OmniscienceOmniscience since it lets us look at and play the top card of our library - including lands!
Omniscience gives us unlimited free spells from our hand, but one free spell per turn is all we really need in this deck.
Crackle with PowerCrackle with Power
Crackle with Power ends games. I know, because I've ended games with it. Pump all the mana we can into it, with help from all of our cost reducers, and go straight to opponents' life totals.
Jeska's WillJeska's Will
Game Changer for a reason, Jeska's Will is one of the best spells for getting us ahead in the game.
Seething SongSeething Song
Three mana to get five mana, and then cast something bigger. It's just what we need. It's also a $10 common.
Bria, Riptide RogueBria, Riptide Rogue
Straight outta Bloomburrow, this Otter Rogue is happy to pump up all of our Elemental tokens and other combatant creatures, and make them unblockable.
Nanogene ConversionNanogene Conversion
Here's a fun one. If we've got a plethora of creature tokens on the board, we cast Nanogene Conversion and turn all of our creatures into Rootha. Go to combat and they all make us - at least - a 4/4 token; we just doubled our army.
Resonating LuteResonating Lute
This artifact is from the Secrets of Strixhaven main set, and could potentially fall into the budget adds category once prices drop after prerelease. But for now we're being cautious and throwing it here with the nonbudget cards.
It makes our lands tap for two mana each to cast instants and sorceries, which seems like a home run in this deck. It can potentially draw us a card, but really, it's here for the ramp.
Seize the DaySeize the Day
Seize the Day is here for the same reason as Full ThrottleFull Throttle. Extra combat spells are just great in this deck.
Magnus the RedMagnus the Red
Another great option for reducing our spell costs, and he even makes his own tokens.
Quantum MisalignmentQuantum Misalignment
Rebound is one of the best mechanics for this deck, since it ensures we'll get another token from Rootha the turn after we cast it.
But the icing on this cake is that we can use it to copy Rootha. Having multiple copies of your commander is great in almost every Commander deck.
Improvisation CapstoneImprovisation Capstone
Another one from the main set, though this is likely to stay pricy since it's a mythic. The paradigm mechanic ensures that we're casting this large spell every turn, which means Rootha makes - at least - a 7/7 every time we go to combat.
Oh, it's also some pretty good card advantage!
Sea Gate RestorationSea Gate Restoration
MDFCs are fantastic in this deck, since so many of our spells are expensive, they might be better in the early game as a land drop. Sea Gate Restoration is one of the best - as you can probably guess by its price.
Call Forth the TempestCall Forth the Tempest
This does everything: a one-sided board wipe, two free spells, an 8/8 from Rootha. It also has a great name.
InsurrectionInsurrection
Another card that just flat out ends games.
ExpropriateExpropriate
Did you know that you can play Expropriate in your Bracket 2 decks now? That's right, this former Game Changer can now be played in pretty much any deck. And it is an excellent way to take control of a game.
Mnemonic DelugeMnemonic Deluge
Our mana curve topper here is gonna get our best spell - or maybe an opponent's - from the grave and cast it three times. With the huge spells we'll be having in our grave, it's likely we'll be doing something very epic with this.
Cards To Cut from the Precon
Harmonic ProdigyHarmonic Prodigy
This is a great card, except for one problem: Rootha is neither a Wizard or a Shaman. Do we have other cards in the deck with those creature types? Yes, a fair few. But if none of them are on the board, this is a dead card.
Brazen BorrowerBrazen Borrower
I don't understand why this is in the precon. Makes no sense to me.
Chaos WarpChaos Warp
Cooper Gottfried recently wrote an article about whether or not Chaos Warp is overplayed. I lean towards yes. I also lean towards cutting it from this already removal heavy deck.
Redoubled StormsingerRedoubled Stormsinger
I get that this guy is here because he'll copy Rootha's tokens. But to accomplish that you have to attack with a 3/3. First strike really doesn't make it any better.
Rootha, Mercurial ArtistRootha, Mercurial Artist
Rootha's old self is decent in this deck, but not great. We're really planning to spend all our mana on the biggest spells, so holding up the for young Rootha's effect just doesn't make sense. Especially since we have to replay her every time.
Chain ReactionChain Reaction
Like I said, this deck is already a bit heavy on removal, so this felt like a good option to cut.
Curiosity CrafterCuriosity Crafter
Some games this might draw a handful of cards. Other games it might be useless. If this were a token deck with lots of tokens, this would be better. But we're more focused on fewer, bigger tokens.
Galazeth PrismariGalazeth Prismari
How many artifacts are we running in this deck? Not enough to play Galazeth.
Throes of ChaosThroes of Chaos
Cascading into smaller spells doesn't really do much for us. Since that's really all this card does, it feels superfluous.
Creative TechniqueCreative Technique
We could hit big, or we could whiff. That's part of the fun of Creative Technique, for sure. It's also fun to share it with the demonstrate ability. But there's just too many variables.
Goldspan DragonGoldspan Dragon
This is not a Treasure deck. We'll make a few, but not enough to warrant this inclusion.
Mirrorwing DragonMirrorwing Dragon
Very few of our spells will want to target our own creatures. This is a confusing inclusion in the precon, and an easy cut for the upgrade.
Plargg and NassariPlargg and Nassari
I like this a lot better in Exile decks where we get benefits from casting these spells. But that's not what this deck is.
Rionya, Fire DancerRionya, Fire Dancer
Rionya is such a great card. I even had very strong deck built around her for a while. So it was a bit of a painful cut to make. But we're not in the business of casting lots of spells each turn; we're casting one big one. So Rionya is not as good as she could be.
Volcanic TorrentVolcanic Torrent
Pay five mana to deal two damage to our opponents' creatures and planeswalkers? Pass.
