Hello, fellow web-slingers! I'm Brian, your usual host of Brew For Your Buck (BFYB), swinging into another build for a commander from Magic's newest set. No, I'm not talking about Edge of Eternities; that set is one month old so it's basically space dust at this point.

Remember, you must be bombarded with product until your eyes fall out, so in this case it's good you have eight.

Peter Parker

The Spider-verse is awesome; I love Miles and Gwen, but Peter Parker is the OG, and it's sweet that I get to showcase him in Magic form. Peter will sit in your command zone face-up as a two-drop, but because of the mana cost on the back side, you can cast him as Amazing Spider-Man straight away. My guess is that most of the time you'll want to do that, since you have an extremely fragile body (and a Spider) otherwise.

The Spider-Man side is also where you get the real spice:

"Each legendary spell you cast that’s one or more colors has web-slinging ."

Web-slinging is a new mechanic that allows you to cast a spell for an alternate cost if you return a tapped creature you control to your hand along with it. I'm not exactly sure what the flavor is here; drop a comment down below if you know.

This is an incredibly powerful ability allowing you to cheat on mana costs for all of your legendary spells as long as you can meet the tapped creature requirement. To maximize your web-slinging ability, you'll need creatures to bounce, ways to tap them down, and big legendary spells (not limited to legendary creatures) to slam ahead of schedule.

Tap Dancing

You need to have tapped creatures in order to use web-slinging, and creatures that generate the mana to pay for that cost are a great place to start.

Obvious inclusions are Birds of ParadiseBirds of Paradise and Noble HierarchNoble Hierarch, but you can also throw in lesser known creatures like Loam DryadLoam Dryad and Gene PollinatorGene Pollinator which can make you mana and two tapped creatures. They're all cheap to re-cast after bouncing them, and count towards the deck's mana acceleration slots.

I'm not including the mono-green dorks like Llanowar ElvesLlanowar Elves, simply because we need all three colors for web-slinging so mana-fixers are more important.

Not all of the creatures will be mana dorks, so having ways to tap any creature you want is critical as well. Fortunately you can put a few of those in your mana base: Survivors' EncampmentSurvivors' Encampment and Holdout SettlementHoldout Settlement. Springleaf DrumSpringleaf Drum fits the bill here too. All three help with fixing, ramping, and tapping.

Every one of the tappers I've listed so far is a once-per-turn cycle effect, so add Mothdust ChangelingMothdust Changeling and OppositionOpposition in order to have ways to tap as many creatures as you want, at instant speed. The Changeling is even another cheap creature to use for web-slinging purposes and counts as a Spider if that's going to be important to you.

I'd love to see a Spider-typal list with Peter Parker at the helm.

As I mentioned before, convoke has some excellent synergy with web-slinging. To start, Peri BrownPeri Brown, Dazzling Theater // Prop RoomDazzling Theater // Prop Room, and We Ride at DawnWe Ride at Dawn are auto-includes. Those big legends you're planning to cast? Now you can tap creatures for the mana and conveniently return one of them to pay a web-slinging cost, all while leaving your lands up for interaction or other spells.

Getting into specific cards with convoke, The Wandering RescuerThe Wandering Rescuer and Clever ConcealmentClever Concealment can be used to help protect your board. Triplicate SpiritsTriplicate Spirits and Sprout SwarmSprout Swarm just give you some extra ways to make expendable creatures to pay for convoke costs and bounce to your hand.

Finally, we'll include some creatures that give you a benefit for becoming tapped. It doesn't matter how they get tapped, they just want to be sideways. Attack with them, tap them to pay for web-slinging, or use them to pay a convoke cost, whatever your little spider-heart desires.

The basics include FallowsageFallowsage and Wylie DukeWylie Duke for card velocity, Seedship AgrarianSeedship Agrarian for ramp, and EmmaraEmmara and Stonybrook SchoolmasterStonybrook Schoolmaster to make creatures, just to name a few.

A more interesting option is Mistmeadow VanisherMistmeadow Vanisher to protect stuff via delayed blink. We'll wrap it all up with Quest for RenewalQuest for Renewal to really power up tapping shenanigans.

Gotta Bounce

There's no shortage of creatures with excellent ETB triggers that exist in Commander, and many of them are among the most popular creatures played in the format. The Bant color identity () is also home to many Blink strategies, so we can pull some ideas from those decks too. The cheaper the better, since these creatures are the ones you'll want to be returning to uour hand to pay for web-slinging. Then recast them and get even more value.

Some classics include Coiling OracleCoiling Oracle, Loran of the Third PathLoran of the Third Path, Eternal WitnessEternal Witness, Spirited CompanionSpirited Companion, and Wood ElvesWood Elves, all filling different roles that any Commander deck needs. While not the cheapest thing to recast over and over, Mystic SnakeMystic Snake becomes a re-usable CounterspellCounterspell for maximum salt from your opponents.

Of course, creatures that can be cast for free are excellent too. Even though they don't have valuable triggers attached, the trio of OrnithopterOrnithopter, MemniteMemnite, and Phyrexian WalkerPhyrexian Walker are going in the deck in so you can instantly re-cast them after tapping and bouncing for web-slinging.

It's Gonna Be Legen... Wait for It...

Let's address the interdimensional eldritch horrors in the room. Spider-Man's ability critically says "that's one or more colors." Therefore, no Eldrazi Titans today.

This almost got me as I was building the list, originally writing my complaints about how very boring adding them to the list would be. We all know they're the premier "cheat-in" creatures out there. Also, they're expensive, so I'd rather invest in a three-color mana-base or some of the other key cards for this deck.

Plus, there are plenty of high mana value legendary things to cheat in that will get a much better reaction from your opponents for their obscurity factor.

Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre
Emrakul, the Promised End
Kozilek, Butcher of Truth

What are those legendary things? Glad you asked. We'll kick it off with two of the old school Myojin: Seeing WindsSeeing Winds and Life's WebLife's Web.

Imagine activating the blue one and drawing a bazillion cards, then cheating in the green one and putting all the creatures you just drew onto the battlefield. Speaking of putting all the creatures on the battlefield, Ghalta, Stampede TyrantGhalta, Stampede Tyrant does the same thing.

One key point worth mentioning: you can always return these creatures to pay for web-slinging as well, enabling you to re-buy their absurdly powerful abilities.

Of course, you aren't just limited to legendary creatures. While Akroma's MemorialAkroma's Memorial is a no-go, Avacyn's MemorialAvacyn's Memorial is perfectly fine thanks to its white mana pips. With so many creatures, The Great HengeThe Great Henge is even more busted than usual, especially since you can cheat it in with Spider-Man or cast it for cheap after you cheat in something else.

Some other legendary support cards include Gold-Forged ThopteryxGold-Forged Thopteryx and Search for GlorySearch for Glory, protecting and finding your threats as needed.

Gameplay

PHEW. That's a lot of cards. Amazing Spider-ManAmazing Spider-Man is just such a cool commander and I've had so much fun exploring the build. Before we wrap up with the final decklist, let's talk a bit about gameplay. If I were piloting the deck, I'd aim to get set up to deploy a web-slinged (?) -slung (?) spell by turn four.

If you can get a mana dork or rock down by turn two, you can play Amazing Spider-Man on turn three and then a big threat on turn four. This is the ideal scenario of course, but after that you can focus on protecting the threats or deploying new ones, overwhelming opponents with a massive mana advantage.

Sequencing all of the tapping, convoking, etc. can be a little tricky, so take your time to plan out your turns when you can.

Wrap Up and Mini-BFYB

Peter ParkerPeter Parker has the potential to be the most popular commander from the set - not only because of the character's fame, but the ability to do what Commander is all about: casting giant, flashy spells. The deck turns out not to be too expensive, but as is tradition I'll do a mini Brew For Your Buck analysis of the list in case you want to save some money when you go to pick up the cards:

I'd love to hear your feedback about the list. Note: I didn't include any Game Changers to keep the price down and for the sake of being bracket flexible, but you can always use them to power up the deck.

Drop a comment below and let me know what you think. Did I miss some giant legendary spells to include? Do you think we have enough enablers? Do you also love Spider-Man? I look forward to hearing it all.

In the meantime, happy brewing, and be sure to thank your friendly neighborhood hero, whoever that might be.
