Magic's upcoming Marvel's Spider-Man set doesn't come out for a while, but we've already got a look at quite a few new legendary creatures we could potentially build Commander decks around. EDHREC is your one-stop shop for all things Spider-Man, and today I'm adding to the stack with a deck tech on a nifty deck I built around Miles MoralesMiles Morales.

Miles Morales

Miles is a modern reimagining of the popular Spider-Man character, set in an alternate timeline from the Peter Parker Spider-Man that most of us are likely familiar with. My son is a huge fan of Miles from the Spider-Verse films, and I know he's going to be excited to put together a Commander deck - maybe this one? - with Miles at the helm!

What Does Miles MoralesMiles Morales Do?

Miles MoralesMiles Morales is a modal dual-faced card, which means you can cast either side - there's the Miles Morales side for , and then there's the Ultimate Spider-Man side for .

I'd be tempted to play the Ultimate Spider-Man side first once I've deployed some early spells and ramp, and once it's been sent back to the command zone then I'd cast the Miles Morales side since it's considerably cheaper and has a way to transform for the same mana cost of the Ultimate Spider-Man side.

Ultimate Spider-Man has a lot of cool things going on. It's a 4/3 with first strike and haste, so it can attack the same turn you play it. Also whenever you attack you double the number of each kind of counter on each Spider and legendary creature you control - that's when you attack with any creature, not just Ultimate Spider-Man.

This means you'll want to include a lot of legendary creatures and/or Spiders in your deck, along with various ways to add beneficial counters to your creatures such as +1/+1 counters. Just make sure you're not using -1/-1 counters for something like persist since they would get doubled too; it's not a "may" ability!

Ultimate Spider-Man also has a sweet camouflage activated ability: for two mana, you put a +1/+1 counter on him, and he gains hexproof and becomes colorless until end of turn.

The hexproof part of it is nifty for avoiding targeted interaction. Becoming colorless is less useful, but it will occasionally matter when staring down a creature with protection from one or more of the Naya colors - say, something equipped with a Sword of Feast and FamineSword of Feast and Famine?

The Miles Morales side is basically there to cheat on your commander tax a bit, and when he enters you get to put a +1/+1 counter on each of up to two target creatures, including himself. So when you eventually transform into Ultimate Spider-Man he'll already have a counter you can double on the attack.

Key Cards for Miles MoralesMiles Morales

Spider-Punk
Spectacular Spider-Man
Spider-Man, Miles Morales

Marvel's Spider-Man is chock full of Spiders due to all the various Spider-Man and Spider-adjacent cards across the various Spider-Man titles. Luckily, the Naya color identity of Miles MoralesMiles Morales means you can jam quite a few of them in this list, though your deck will become the epitome of that meme that shows three different Spider-Man characters pointing at each other.

Spider-PunkSpider-Punk's ability to give other Spiders riot is an awesome way to spread around +1/+1 counters that Ultimate Spider-Man can double, and the rest of the text will occasionally be useful for a deck that wants to deploy creatures and attack with them. Spectacular Spider-ManSpectacular Spider-Man is full of useful abilities for just two mana, particularly the sacrifice ability to protect your team from a battlefield sweeper.

Spider-Man, Miles MoralesSpider-Man, Miles Morales is also filled to the brim with excellent abilities, giving all your other creatures +1/+1 counters and trample, which can quickly swell your team of attackers to life-crushing size.

Twitching Doll
Arasta of the Endless Web
Mirkwood Spider

Twitching DollTwitching Doll is creepy but does everything you want for a mana creature in this deck: It fixes your colors, ramps you, is a Spider, and when it's sacrificed it can spill out a bunch of Spider tokens.

Arasta of the Endless WebArasta of the Endless Web makes a Spider token whenever an opponent casts an instant or sorcery spell. Mirkwood SpiderMirkwood Spider is an excellent early blocker, and later on you can attack with it to give one of your legendary creatures deathtouch until end of turn, making blocking you problematic.

Spinner of Souls
Arachnus Spinner
Arachnogenesis

I play Spinner of SoulsSpinner of Souls in just about any green creature-heavy deck to provide some resistance to mass removal, but since it's a Spider it's got even more upside here. Arachnus SpinnerArachnus Spinner and its companion card Arachnus WebArachnus Web are sweet in any deck with lots of Spiders.

And then there's ArachnogenesisArachnogenesis, which functions as a FogFog of sorts, but since there are a lot of Spiders in the deck, in addition to the Spiders this creates, you can end up ambushing one or more attackers to a creepy, Spidery death.

Bristly Bill, Spine Sower
Rishkar, Peema Renegade
Arwen, Weaver of Hope

I rounded out the deck with legendary creatures that provided support to the themes of the deck. I particularly nabbed ones like Bristly Bill, Spine SowerBristly Bill, Spine Sower, Rishkar, Peema RenegadeRishkar, Peema Renegade, and Arwen, Weaver of HopeArwen, Weaver of Hope that help throw around +1/+1 counters.

Mikaeus, the Lunarch
Boromir, Warden of the Tower
Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar

Mikaeus, the LunarchMikaeus, the Lunarch is another excellent way to add +1/+1 counters, while Boromir, Warden of the TowerBoromir, Warden of the Tower is another way to save your team from a battlefield sweeper; but don't overlook the fact that Boromir can hose spells like Force of WillForce of Will or Deflecting SwatDeflecting Swat that opponents are hoping to cast for no mana.

Kutzil, Malamet ExemplarKutzil, Malamet Exemplar gets real good when you're boosting your creatures with +1/+1 counters, with the awesome side benefit of shutting down your opponents' spells on your turn.

Bugenhagen, Wise Elder
Ojer Kaslem, Deepest Growth

Bugenhagen, Wise ElderBugenhagen, Wise Elder is another excellent color-fixer, and once one of your creatures grows to power seven or greater it will draw you a card. Ojer Kaslem, Deepest GrowthOjer Kaslem, Deepest Growth is an excellent source of card advantage that gets better and better the bigger you can make it. And if it dies it turns into a land until you want to turn it back into a God.

Relic of Legends
Flowering of the White Tree
Annie Joins Up

Since the deck has a high level of legendary creatures I went looking for cards that care about that, like Relic of LegendsRelic of Legends and Flowering of the White TreeFlowering of the White Tree. I also really like Annie Joins UpAnnie Joins Up here too!

Gimli of the Glittering Caves
Hajar, Loyal Bodyguard

Gimli of the Glittering CavesGimli of the Glittering Caves's double strike will surely appreciate as many extra +1/+1 counters you can pile on, while Hajar, Loyal BodyguardHajar, Loyal Bodyguard provides a power boost in life, and indestructible for most of your team in death.

Casal, Lurkwood Pathfinder
Havi, the All-Father

Casal, Lurkwood PathfinderCasal, Lurkwood Pathfinder's transformed side gives all other legendary creatures you control +2/+2 and trample, which can really push through the damage. Havi, the All-FatherHavi, the All-Father's sage project ability is another way to insulate the damage from having your team destroyed by a battlefield sweeper.

Bayek of Siwa
Arbaaz Mir
Sarah Jane Smith

Bayek of SiwaBayek of Siwa, Arbaaz MirArbaaz Mir, and Sarah Jane SmithSarah Jane Smith are legends that care about historic cards - which all legends are!

Sphere Grid
Rhythm of the Wild
Tromell, Seymour's Butler

I also went looking for cards that cared about counters. Sphere GridSphere Grid is a bit expensive, but if you've been waiting for a place to put it, this deck is it! Its unlock ability gives creatures you control with +1/+1 counters on them reach - just like a Spider!

Rhythm of the WildRhythm of the Wild gives nontoken creatures you control riot which can add +1/+1 counters for doubling. Tromell, Seymour's ButlerTromell, Seymour's Butler has the good half of riot, and also an activated proliferate ability that's handy for accumulating +1/+1 counters.

Halana and Alena, Partners
Wakka, Devoted Guardian
Protection Magic

Halana and Alena, PartnersHalana and Alena, Partners and Wakka, Devoted GuardianWakka, Devoted Guardian are even more ways to add +1/+1 counters, while Protection MagicProtection Magic can add shield counters to creatures that can be doubled with Ultimate Spider-Man's ability.

Requisition Raid
Season of Gathering

I love the flexibility of both Requisition RaidRequisition Raid and Season of GatheringSeason of Gathering potentially providing more than just +1/+1 counters.

How Does This Miles MoralesMiles Morales Commander Deck Win?

I built this as a Bracket 2 (Core) deck designed for a long, interactive game that's eventually won through combat.

Uncivil Unrest
Cathars' Crusade

Uncivil UnrestUncivil Unrest is a powerful, game-ending enchantment that can both add +1/+1 counters with riot, and make creatures you control with +1/+1 counters deal double damage to a permanent or player.

And it doesn't take too long for Cathars' CrusadeCathars' Crusade to quickly grow your team; just make sure you have plenty of dice to mark all those +1/+1 counters.

Tifa, Martial Artist
Karlach, Fury of Avernus
Full Throttle

Since Ultimate Spider-Man has a potent ability that triggers on attacks, I put two legendary creatures in the deck that can generate extra attacks: Tifa, Martial ArtistTifa, Martial Artist and Karlach, Fury of AvernusKarlach, Fury of Avernus. And then there's the absurd Full ThrottleFull Throttle to give you two more attack steps!

Conclusion

If you want to kick this deck up a notch on the power scale and play in Bracket 3 (Upgraded) games, you can pepper in some Game Changers to help.

Teferi's Protection
Deflecting Swat
Smothering Tithe

Teferi's ProtectionTeferi's Protection, Deflecting SwatDeflecting Swat, and Smothering TitheSmothering Tithe are the ones I'd go for. But I wouldn't try and play this deck at a higher level; the mana investment to get Ultimate Spider-Man is quite high, and while you're trying to set up you might just lose or fall way behind the others.

But if you're looking for a grindy good time with plenty of opportunity to laugh while you dig out more and more dice for your creatures and do that Spider-Man meme, this deck could be right up your friendly neighborhood!

Which other cards would you want to put in your Miles MoralesMiles Morales deck? In particular I'm curious what other counters would you put on your creatures to double on your attacks?

As the set gets fully revealed I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for more Spiders, more legendary creatures, and maybe some nifty cards that do cool things specifically for Spiders!
