A few weeks back, Wizards of the Coast announced many of the big Magic events of 2026, and included a Magic Spotlight Series stop right here in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia -- which I'm super-excited about!

The Spotlight features a new Universes Beyond set that they kept under wraps until this past weekend's New York Comic Con, when it was revealed to be a Magic crossover with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Magic Spotlight Richmond

Of course, they previewed some new legendary cards featuring characters from the comics, TV shows, and movies. Whenever we get these sorts of previews, my Commander brain starts brewing, so today I want to share a deck tech built around Leonardo, Worldly WarriorLeonardo, Worldly Warrior!

Leonardo, Worldly Warrior

What Does Leonardo, Worldly WarriorLeonardo, Worldly Warrior Do?

Leonardo, Worldly WarriorLeonardo, Worldly Warrior seems pretty simple. It's a legendary 5/5 Mutant Ninja Turtle with double strike that costs a whopping eight mana to cast, but has a built-in cost reducer so that you should rarely need to pay full retail for it.

Double strike is a potent ability to have on a commander, especially one that starts at a sizeable five power. You'll want to add ways to increase the power, give it evasion, and especially look for combat damage triggers which will trigger twice.

Ghalta, Primal Hunger

Leonardo reminds me of Ghalta, Primal HungerGhalta, Primal Hunger in that they both have a really high mana value, but built-in ways to significantly discount it. Ghalta, being green, is looking for high power creatures, whereas Leonardo, being white, is looking for a lot of creatures - and white is really good at producing loads of token creatures.

Green has a fair number of cards that care about high mana value creatures or commanders; white, not so much. But we can take advantage of a couple and keep our eyes peeled for more that might appear in future sets!

Leonardo is going to win with combat damage, either swarming your opponent with small creatures while Leonardo holds the fort, or smashing your opponent with Leonardo while your tokens hold the fort.

Key Cards for Leonardo, Worldly WarriorLeonardo, Worldly Warrior

Adeline, Resplendent Cathar
God-Eternal Oketra
Rabble Rousing

When building this deck, the first thing I went looking for are ways to start making a lot of token creatures.

Adeline, Resplendent CatharAdeline, Resplendent Cathar makes more tokens the more opponents you have, but those tokens are little 1/1s that are attacking each opponent, so you can expect some number of them to get squished by blockers.

God-Eternal OketraGod-Eternal Oketra is a little slower at making token creatures, but they are more sizeable and don't hit the battlefield tapped and attacking. Oketra itself is a pretty decent backup for Leonardo, featuring the double strike ability, and being quite difficult to get rid of permanently.

Then there's Rabble RousingRabble Rousing, which can spit out a 1/1 creature for each creature you're attacking with, and even has a hideaway ability attached for extra value.

Call the Coppercoats
Secure the Wastes
White Sun's Zenith

Call the CoppercoatsCall the Coppercoats, Secure the WastesSecure the Wastes, and White Sun's ZenithWhite Sun's Zenith are excellent "army in a can" cards that scale nicely the longer the game goes, and it's especially nice that WSZ shuffles back into your library to potentially draw again!

Friendly Neighborhood
Defiler of Faith
Oketra's Monument

Friendly NeighborhoodFriendly Neighborhood is perfect-- it makes three token creatures when it enters, and then you can activate it to potentially boost Leonardo by quite a bit-- at sorcery speed only though, so your opponents will see it coming.

Defiler of FaithDefiler of Faith and Oketra's MonumentOketra's Monument are awesome at discounting some of your spells and making token creatures along the way.

Mondrak, Glory Dominus
Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation
Anointed Procession

White has powerful ways to compound the number of tokens you make, and I've included them here with Mondrak, Glory DominusMondrak, Glory Dominus, Ojer Taq, Deepest FoundationOjer Taq, Deepest Foundation, and Anointed ProcessionAnointed Procession. It's unfortunate that they're so expensive, but if you happen to have them in your collection they definitely belong in the deck.

Caretaker's Talent
Toby, Beastie Befriender
Halo Fountain

Caretaker's TalentCaretaker's Talent is an excellent card-draw engine for decks that make tokens, while Toby, Beastie BefrienderToby, Beastie Befriender can give your token creatures flying. Halo FountainHalo Fountain fills a lot of roles, making tokens, drawing cards, or potentially winning the game if you somehow have 15 tapped creatures and five white mana for the final activated ability.

Fountainport
Enduring Innocence

FountainportFountainport is an excellent addition to any token deck, and it doesn't even cost you a nonland slot! Enduring InnocenceEnduring Innocence is here for a resilient card draw engine, since most tokens this deck makes will have power two or less.

Grand Crescendo
Flawless Maneuver
Flare of Fortitude

The problem with go-wide strategies is having to rebuild after a battlefield sweeper, so I've included a fair number of ways to try and protect your battlefield.

Grand CrescendoGrand Crescendo is perfect here since it can also increase your battlefield presence with even more tokens if you have the mana available. Flawless ManeuverFlawless Maneuver and Flare of FortitudeFlare of Fortitude are awesome ways to protect your team even if you have no mana available.

Boromir, Warden of the Tower
Dawn's Truce
Duty Beyond Death

I'm a big fan of Boromir, Warden of the TowerBoromir, Warden of the Tower for any creature deck, and occasionally it's ability to counter spells that are cast with no mana can be relevant. I'm also a big fan of the gift mechanic in Commander for its political ramifications, so I've included Dawn's TruceDawn's Truce here too. Lastly, there's Duty Beyond DeathDuty Beyond Death, which can boost the size and protect your team at the cost of one of your little token creatures sacrificed.

Skullclamp
Blackblade Reforged
Super State

Next I went looking for ways to boost the size of Leonardo. SkullclampSkullclamp will usually be equipping small one toughness token creatures to draw two cards for one mana, but don't overlook giving Leonardo an extra power and an extra two damage.

Friends and regular readers won't be surprised at Blackblade ReforgedBlackblade Reforged, which I add to most of my commander decks but is literally doubly-good here.

If you can get ahold of Super StateSuper State it's going to do a ton of work in this deck, boosting Leonardo, giving it evasion, and each time it deals combat damage to an opponent it deals that much damage to each other opponent, which can potentially just end the game and is totally worth the seven mana.

Sword of Hearth and Home
Sword of Fire and Ice
Umezawa's Jitte

I imagine once the set comes out there'll be some sweet new Equipment that flavorfully tie into the character, but in the meantime, there are plenty of bladed weapons to choose from.

I added Sword of Hearth and HomeSword of Hearth and Home and Sword of Fire and IceSword of Fire and Ice for their combat damage triggers that will hopefully trigger twice with Leonardo, along with Umezawa's JitteUmezawa's Jitte, which triggers off any combat damage - not just damage to opponents.

Jitte in particular works great with double strike. You can apply first strike damage, get the two charge counters, then remove both of them to give equipped creature +4/+4 for the regular damage - and get those charge counters right back!

Odric, Lunarch Marshal
Concerted Effort

White has a couple ways to share abilities and I'm including them both here with Odric, Lunarch MarshalOdric, Lunarch Marshal and Concerted EffortConcerted Effort, since sharing double-strike makes all your token creatures much scarier. There are creatures in the deck that give some of the other keyword abilities too, especially vigilance!

The Wandering Rescuer
Hour of Reckoning
Clever Concealment

Making a lot of token creatures you might not want to be attacking with yet makes cards with convoke quite powerful. The Wandering RescuerThe Wandering Rescuer can protect your tapped creatures from targeted removal, and hey - it's also got double strike!

Hour of ReckoningHour of Reckoning is a sweeper spell that will spare token creatures, and you'll probably get to recast Leonardo relatively easy. Then there's Clever ConcealmentClever Concealment as another awesome way to save your team, often for no mana.

Visions of Glory
Cactus Preserve

The Visions cycle from Midnight Hunt Commander have an excellent discount to the flashback based on the mana value of your commander, and Visions of GloryVisions of Glory happens to be perfect for Leonardo since it makes token creatures based on the number of creatures you control. In this deck, the flashback is simply !

Cactus PreserveCactus Preserve is a decent backup plan if you're playing someone who simply keeps sweeping your battlefield of all your tokens, since it becomes an 8/8 upon activation.

Lotus Field
Weathered Wayfarer
Claim Jumper

Nearly all my monowhite decks contain Lotus FieldLotus Field, since white has so many good cards that care about an opponent having more lands than you, such as Weathered WayfarerWeathered Wayfarer and Claim JumperClaim Jumper.

Land Tax
Scroll Rack
Sun Titan

Land TaxLand Tax is another one of those cards, and combines so well with Scroll RackScroll Rack to provide a powerful card-draw engine that is almost always worth the card slots. Then there's Sun TitanSun Titan, which is almost always worth a spot in any white deck for being a powerful attacker, blocker, and value engine.

How Does This Leonardo, Worldly WarriorLeonardo, Worldly Warrior Commander Deck Win?

Depending on how much you can enhance his power, Leonardo is quite capable of taking down opponents with commander damage. But since the deck wants to create a bunch of tokens, I've included ways to enhance the go-wide strategy.

Akroma's Will
Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
Moonshaker Cavalry

Akroma's WillAkroma's Will gives so many abilities it very nearly always wins the game. Elesh Norn, Grand CenobiteElesh Norn, Grand Cenobite puts the kibosh on opposing token strategies while boosting your own team. And we can't forget white's version of Craterhoof BehemothCraterhoof Behemoth, good ol' Moonshaker CavalryMoonshaker Cavalry. That'll end games nearly as well.

Conclusion

This is built to be a solid Core (Bracket 2) deck, where games have time to breathe and wins are usually attained through combat damage.

The fact that this deck straddles both a go-wide and a go-tall strategy gives it two different avenues to press the attack, depending on what cards come up and how the game flows. What sort of cards would you include in a Leonardo deck? Which Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle is your favorite character?
