Hey, nerds! With the release of the Final Fantasy Commander decks, we're introduced to 65 new commanders. And while many people might ask which of these is the most powerful, I prefer to ask how fun they are.

Of course, each person's definition of fun differs, so I might rate a commander lower or higher than you; that doesn't mean I think it's bad or that you're bad for playing them; and to be clear, this is for casual EDH only. Because of how many commanders there are in the precons and main set, I'll be splitting my fun ranking for the set into two parts. So stay tuned for my main set fun ranking after previews are done.

The ranks are as follows:

  • Want to Build: I'm interested in building these commanders. Their effect could be unique or a new take on an old mechanic I like.
  • Fun: These are close to wanting to build, but I'm not going out of my way to brew a list for myself.
  • Could Be Fun: These commanders are powerful and don't pull you in a single direction, but because of that, it allows you to build weird strategies with a powerful engine, or have unique build paths that could work.
  • Fun in the 99: Sometimes, commanders are printed for 60-card Magic or to support a theme. I don't want to call them not fun, since they usually are fun. But just not fun as the leader of a deck.
  • Not Fun: This is usually reserved for older commanders who are seven-mana vanilla creatures, something way too jank, or are too salt-inducing for my taste.

Aerith, Last AncientAerith, Last Ancient

Aerith, Last Ancient

A cool combination of life gain and reanimation. But it isn't anything that's super inspiring.

Alphinaud Leveilleur

This partner pair is fine. Probably more fun in the 99 of a deck than leading one.

Ardbert, Warrior of DarknessArdbert, Warrior of Darkness

Ardbert, Warrior of Darkness

Another Ozrhov legendary matters commander, but with a focus on combat. This has the potential to be a fun deck. Catch our deck tech here.

Auron, Venerated GuardianAuron, Venerated Guardian

Auron, Venerated Guardian

A temporary removal spell on a creature. Great at removing tokens, but I’d be worried about removing cards with enters triggers.

Rank: Fun in the 99

Avalanche of Sector 7Avalanche of Sector 7

Avalanche of Sector 7

If you have a lot of artifact decks at your table, this could be fun. Or maybe you build a weird red group hug deck.

Rank: Could Be Fun

Banon, the Returners' LeaderBanon, the Returners' Leader

Banon, the Returners' Leader

Banon makes an interesting artifact creature commander. You can use Wheels to fill up your graveyard, then cast a threat you’ve discarded.

Barret, Avalanche LeaderBarret, Avalanche Leader

Barret, Avalanche Leader

A little slow for an Equipment deck, but it makes a ton of bodies. And I like that it's in colors that aren’t usually for Equipment decks.

Rank: Fun

Bugenhagen, Wise ElderBugenhagen, Wise Elder

Bugenhagen, Wise Elder

This is easily fun in the 99. A mana creature that just draws cards on upkeep isn’t something I want leading a deck.

Rank: Fun in the 99

Cait Sith, Fortune TellerCait Sith, Fortune Teller

Cait Sith, Fortune Teller

Cait provides an interesting source of card advantage and can buff a creature. But it would be more fun in the 99 of a Prosper, Tome-BoundProsper, Tome-Bound or Faldorn, Dread Wolf HeraldFaldorn, Dread Wolf Herald deck.

Rank: Fun in the 99

Celes, Rune KnightCeles, Rune Knight

Celes, Rune Knight

You can easily combo Celes with persist creatures like Murderous RedcapMurderous Redcap or just use [[Walking Ballista]]. I think I’d want to build a combo pile deck with Celes, where I shuffle in a random number of cards that combo with her. Here's our deck tech for Celes.

I love seeing an Equipment commander who wants you to go wide. It’s great with all of the Equipment that makes bodies when they enter. Here's a list of the 10 best token Equipment makers to use with Cloud.

Not sure what I’d want to do with this commander. Seems like a Voltron commander that takes too much setup to make work.

Conclusion

Overall, the Final Fantasy Commander deck legends are solidly fun. Some standouts will be more loved than others because of their lore or power level. But with this many options, I think every legend will have someone who wants to build them. I'm excited to see what crazy builds people make, and I'd love to hear what commander you're looking forward to building.
