Hey, nerds! With the release of Edges of Eternities, we're introduced to 22 new commanders from the main set and precons, and while many people might ask which of these is the most powerful, I prefer to ask how fun they are.
Of course, each person's definition of fun differs, so I might rate a commander lower or higher than you. That doesn't mean I think it's bad or that you're bad for playing them, and, to be clear, this is for casual EDH only.
If you're looking for deck techs for any of the commanders you see below, you can find all of our Edges of Eternities deck techs here.
The ranks are as follows:
- Want to Build: I'm interested in building these commanders. Their effect could be unique or a new take on an old mechanic I like.
- Fun: These are close to wanting to build, but I'm not going out of my way to brew a list for myself.
- Could Be Fun: These commanders are powerful and don't pull you in a single direction, but because of that, it allows you to build weird strategies with a powerful engine, or have unique build paths that could work.
- Fun in the 99: Sometimes commanders are printed for 60-card Magic or to support a theme. I don't want to call them not fun, since they usually are fun. But just not fun as the leader of a deck.
- Not Fun: This is usually reserved for older commanders who are seven-mana vanilla creatures, something way too jank, or are too salt-inducing for my taste.
Alpharael, Dreaming AcolyteAlpharael, Dreaming Acolyte
An underwhelming Dimir commander that doesn't do anything interesting enough. The deathtouch could be useful if you turn him into a pinger.
Fun Ranking: Fun in the 99
Alpharael, StonechosenAlpharael, Stonechosen
This version of Alphareal is a bit more appealing. He can one-shot someone if you have Wound ReflectionWound Reflection effect in play, but good luck making it to your next turn.
Fun Ranking: Could be Fun
Dawnsire, Sunstar DreadnoughtDawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought
A new colorless commander that goes hard with Stuffy DollStuffy Doll or lifelink. I like the idea of using it as a way to generate a metric ton of charge counters from the command zone. I could see Dawnsire being fun.
Fun Ranking: Could be Fun
Dyadrine, Synthesis AmalgamDyadrine, Synthesis Amalgam
I love that Dyadrine kind of gets around commander tax. You still need to pay for it, but you get more counters as its cost goes up. It's a fine option for a +1/+1 Counter deck, or you could try to build a GW artifact deck.
Fun Ranking: Fun
Haliya, Ascendant CadetHaliya, Ascendant Cadet
Haliya seems like a bog-standard support piece for a Counters deck. I could see this being fun in Pauper EDH, but for regular EDH, it isn't appealing.
Fun Ranking: Fun in the 99
Haliya, Guided by LightHaliya, Guided by Light
This Haliya seems way more fun than the GW version. I'm a massive fan of lifegain decks since making numbers go higher feels me with joy. It has an easy-to-build-around effect and provides card draw.
Fun Ranking: Fun
Hearthhull, the WorldseedHearthhull, the Worldseed
I wish Wizards would stop making land based Jund precons. Both of its effects are powerful, obviously, but it could have been so much more. I do like this more than the other Jund commander.
Fun Ranking: Could be Fun
Infinite Guideline StationInfinite Guideline Station
The obligatory WUBRG commander that cares about the set's mechanic. I originally was thinking of building a Blink deck. However, I love the idea of building a Jumpstart deck with it (not the mechanic, but the set). The basic idea is like Jumpstart, where you shuffle together two halves and have a complete deck. Instead of shuffling two 20-card decks, you do two 49-card decks with the last card being Command TowerCommand Tower.
Fun Ranking: Want to Build
Inspirit, Flagship VesselInspirit, Flagship Vessel
Of the two new Jeskai commanders, Inspirit is the least interesting. It's powerful, but it doesn't quite get the brewing juices flowing for me. You're in red, so you could do something with infinite combats to trigger its first ability more than once.
Fun Ranking: Could be Fun
Kilo, Apogee MindKilo, Apogee Mind
Kilo is a prime example of less is more. It has a simple ability that you can build tons of decks around. I already preordered my precon, and I'm so excited to jam this deck.
Fun Ranking: Want to Build
Mm'menon, the Right HandMm'menon, the Right Hand
This reminds me of a fixed Urza, Lord High ArtificerUrza, Lord High Artificer. Notably, this creature isn't the one tapping the artifact for mana, and it can only be used to cast spells from not your hand. It'll be easy to build a combo deck Mm'menon, or you could build a foretell and Adventure deck instead.
Fun Ranking: Could be Fun
Mm'menon, Uthros ExileMm'menon, Uthros Exile
A less narrow Captain Storm, Cosmium RaiderCaptain Storm, Cosmium Raider is cool. My first thought was building Izzet Jellyfish, but there are only 20 other legal Jellyfish in Izzet. If you're not on a budget, this goes hard with Agatha's Soul CauldronAgatha's Soul Cauldron, Walking BallistaWalking Ballista, and Vivi OrnitierVivi Ornitier.
Fun Ranking: Could be Fun
Ragost, Deft GastronautRagost, Deft Gastronaut
We finally have a Lobster commander. Ragost looks like a fun commander that I'm excited to build with random stuff I have lying around.
Fun Ranking: Want to Build
Sami, Ship's EngineerSami, Ship's Engineer
A lower-powered token commander that works great with Vehicles and Spacecraft. This could be fun to clone with Helm of the HostHelm of the Host style effects, but like most uncommon commanders, this is more fun in the 99 of a deck.
Fun Ranking: Fun in the 99
Sami, Wildcat CaptainSami, Wildcat Captain
This Sami seems way more fun. Giving all your spells affinity for artifacts is a wild line of text. Just be prepared to win once this hits the board because I don't think anyone will let this live for too long.
Fun Ranking: Could be Fun
Syr Vondam, Sunstar ExemplarSyr Vondam, Sunstar Exemplar
Syr Vondam makes a great sacrifice or blink commander. It's cheap and can gain you a ton of life, and if you end up blinking it, you just get to blow up nonlands. I'm not going to run out and build this, but it seems fun.
Fun Ranking: Fun
Syr Vondam, the LucentSyr Vondam, the Lucent
Another uncommon legend meant for Limited. I could see this in the 99 of a Knights deck.
Fun Ranking: Fun in the 99
Szarel, Genesis ShepherdSzarel, Genesis Shepherd
I wish Szarel were a Jund Insect-focused commander instead of another Sacrifice commander. I'm sure people will love this, but I'm just tired of the same old with Jund. That being said, I could see this being fun. I'm tempted to try to build Jund Insects with Szarel. Iridescent HornbeetleIridescent Hornbeetle and Mazirek, Kraul Death PriestMazirek, Kraul Death Priest go hard in an Insect deck.
Fun Ranking: Could be Fun
Tannuk, Memorial EnsignTannuk, Memorial Ensign
Tannuk feels like a Gruul Tatyova, Benthic DruidTatyova, Benthic Druid that isn't nearly as busted. It has a win condition built in and wants you to try to get lands into play on other players' turns. There are plenty of instants and creatures that will let you trigger Landfall multiple turn cycles.
Fun Ranking: Fun
Tannuk, Steadfast SecondTannuk, Steadfast Second
Now this is a mono-red commander I want to build. I can't wait to warp in Myr BattlesphereMyr Battlesphere and Maelstrom ColossusMaelstrom Colossus. Notably, if you give your spells flash with Vedalken OrreryVedalken Orrery, you can warp on your opponent's end step right before your turn. Conjurer's ClosetConjurer's Closet will be required in the deck to keep whatever you cheat into play around. You can also use Sundial of the InfiniteSundial of the Infinite to keep stuff around.
Fun Ranking: Want to Build
The SeriemaThe Seriema
If you want to build Mono-White Legends, this will be good, but I'm more excited to jam this in my Jodah, the UnifierJodah, the Unifier all legendary deck.
Fun Ranking: Fun in the 99
Xu-Ifit, OsteoharmonistXu-Ifit, Osteoharmonist
Xu makes an interesting Mono-Black Sacrifice commander. You can return your creature as a vanilla threat, then use Feign DeathFeign Death-style effects to bring it back as a normal creature. Another option is Skeletons, which also seems fun. This is probably the sleeper want to build for me.
Fun Ranking: Want to Build
Overall, Edges of Eternities is one of the sets I'm the least excited to build commanders from, but it has a ton of powerful nonlegendary creatures I'm excited to put into decks. It is a breath of fresh air to only have 22 commanders after Final Fantasy, which had over 100 new commanders.
I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments under the article, and make sure to come back every day for more great Commander articles.
Alrighty nerds, I'll see you in the next one!
