How Fun Are All of the Temur Commanders?

Hey, nerds! Today we're having fun ranking all of the Temur commanders.

Of course, each person's definition of fun differs, so I might rate a commander lower or higher than you. That doesn't mean I think it's bad or that you're bad for playing them, and, to be clear, this is for casual EDH only. Also, I won't be covering partner commanders in this series.

And stay tuned for my Avatar: The Last Airbender fun ranking once the set is fully spoiled.

The ranks are as follows:

  • Want to Build: I'm interested in building these commanders. Their effect could be unique or a new take on an old mechanic I like.
  • Fun: These are close to wanting to build, but I'm not going out of my way to brew a list for myself.
  • Could Be Fun: These commanders are powerful and don't pull you in a single direction, but because of that, it allows you to build weird strategies with a powerful engine, or have unique build paths that could work.
  • Fun in the 99: Sometimes commanders are printed for 60-card Magic or to support a theme. I don't want to call them not fun, since they usually are fun. But just not fun as the leader of a deck.
  • Not Fun: This is usually reserved for older commanders who are seven-mana vanilla creatures, something way too jank, or are too salt-inducing for my taste.

Animar, Soul of ElementsAnimar, Soul of Elements

Animar, Soul of Elements

If you're looking for a do-it-all Temur commander, Animar is a solid choice. It can easily be swapped to fit any playstyle or power level.

Fun Rank: Fun

Averna, the Chaos BloomAverna, the Chaos Bloom

Averna, the Chaos Bloom

A great value commander that isn't overly oppressive. I love cascading and ramping, so being able to combine both in a single commander speaks to me.

Fun Rank: Want to Build

Beluna GrandsquallBeluna Grandsquall

Beluna Grandsquall

I expected more out of an Adventure commander. I usually love card draw and cost reduction, but there isn't a ton of play with this commander.

Fun Rank: Fun in the 99

Borborygmos and FblthpBorborygmos and Fblthp

Borborygmos and Fblthp

The partner pairing I never knew I wanted. There's a surprising number of creatures that care about being dealt damage. I'm surprised Hornet NestHornet Nest or Screaming NemesisScreaming Nemesis isn't on their EDHREC page.

Okay, Nemesis is quite expensive, so maybe not that surprised.

Fun Rank: Fun

Eshki DragonclawEshki Dragonclaw

Eshki Dragonclaw

A great role-player in Temur decks and a powerhouse in 1v1. Her ability is easier to trigger in Commander, but requires you to cast spells precombat.

Fun Rank: Could be Fun

Eshki, Temur's RoarEshki, Temur's Roar

Eshki, Temur's Roar

I prefer this version of Eshki — still very much a Temur good stuff commander. However, there's a bit more play to what you can do with her. Notably she deals the damage, which triggers abilities like lifelink or infect.

Fun Rank: Fun

Flubs, the FoolFlubs, the Fool

Flubs, the Fool

This beauty isn't something I've had the pleasure of playing against yet. It reads like a combo commander, but evaluating cards in a vacuum is hard.

If you have a Flubs deck, let me know in the comments. I'd love to see what the community has built.

Fun Rank: Could be Fun

Gimbal, Gremlin ProdigyGimbal, Gremlin Prodigy

Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy

I had Gimbal in my rotation for a couple of years and just recently took him apart. No doubt he is a fun commander, but I found myself not wanting to keep track of so many different tokens.

Fun Rank: Fun

Illuna, Apex of WishesIlluna, Apex of Wishes

Illuna, Apex of Wishes

I like what this card is trying to do, but that effect is underwhelming unless you're trying to cheat big idiots into play. If we get more mutate creatures in the future, I'll gladly revisit Illuna.

Fun Rank: Fun in the 99

Intet, the DreamerIntet, the Dreamer

Intet, the Dreamer

A powerhouse in any Dragon deck. Sadly, she's been outclassed in power, but she'll always have a special place in my heart.

Fun Rank: Fun

Kalamax, the StormsireKalamax, the Stormsire

Kalamax, the Stormsire

Copying spells for free, turns out, is a powerful thing to do. My biggest issue with Kalamax is how samey all of the decks I've played against feel.

Fun Rank: Could be Fun

Lara Croft, Tomb RaiderLara Croft, Tomb Raider

Lara Croft, Tomb Raider

I love the flavor and ability of Lara. It has an interesting restriction of only hitting legendary artifacts or lands. And can benefit from cards that want you to play things from exile.

Fun Rank: Fun

Loot, the Key to EverythingLoot, the Key to Everything

Loot, the Key to Everything

Much like Lara, Loot gets to play cards from exile, which is great. My biggest issue is that you lose those cards if you can't play them. This isn't a huge deal, but something to keep in mind.

Fun Rank: Fun

Loot, the PathfinderLoot, the Pathfinder

Loot, the Pathfinder

Have you ever cast Ancestral RecallAncestral Recall? Unless you play Vintage Cube, probably not. Turns out having access to two pieces of power nine, Black LotusBlack Lotus and Recall, in the command zone is fun.

He's easy to reset with blink effects, and Temur has a wide variety of clones.

Fun Rank: Fun

Maelstrom WandererMaelstrom Wanderer

Maelstrom Wanderer

If you love Averna, the Chaos Bloom, you'll love Maelstrom Wanderer even more. This card is one of the reasons I add Whirlwind DenialWhirlwind Denial to decks now. I prefer Averna over Maelstrom for power-level reasons. But it's easy to swap out the commanders if you need to punch up.

Fun Rank: Fun

Magus Lucea KaneMagus Lucea Kane

Magus Lucea Kane

She enables several X spell strategies from Hydras to Burn. And the mana can be used for abilities with X, like Aladdin's LampAladdin's Lamp or Shigeki, Jukai VisionaryShigeki, Jukai Visionary.

Fun Rank: Fun

Me, the ImmortalMe, the Immortal

Me, the Immortal

It's Skullbriar, the Walking GraveSkullbriar, the Walking Grave but in Temur. If you didn't know, The OzolithThe Ozolith doesn't remove the counters, so if you blink Me, you can put all her counters on the Ozolith.

Fun Rank: Could be Fun

Miirym, Sentinel WyrmMiirym, Sentinel Wyrm

Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm

Arguably the best Dragon commander in the game. You lose access to black and white, but you clone every Dragon that enters under your control. Even if you cheat one in with Sneak AttackSneak Attack.

Fun Rank: Fun

Omnath, Locus of the RoilOmnath, Locus of the Roil

Omnath, Locus of the Roil

The first commander who convinced me to pick up Fetchlands, which snowballed into buying ABU duals years later.

Poor financial decisions aside, three-color jellybean is a ton of fun. I love drawing cards and putting counters on my MulldrifterMulldrifters.

Fun Rank: Want to Build

Pia Nalaar, Chief MechanicPia Nalaar, Chief Mechanic

Pia Nalaar, Chief Mechanic

An energy commander that incentivizes combat instead of sitting around making numbers go up. The Vehicle is underwhelming, but it helps get you more energy.

I'd want to clone her with Spark DoubleSpark Double to get even more energy.

Fun Rank: Fun

Rashmi and RagavanRashmi and Ragavan

Rashmi and Ragavan

You get the best of stupid Monkey (Ragavan, Nimble PilfererRagavan, Nimble Pilferer) and Rashmi with this duo. It's restrictive enough as not to be overly oppressive but easy to enable. The biggest issue is people don't like having their cards stolen.

Fun Rank: Fun

Riku of Many PathsRiku of Many Paths

Riku of Many Paths

If you love casting Cryptic CommandCryptic Command, you'll love Riku. He makes an interesting Spellslinger commander that focuses on modal spells instead of the normal storm payoffs.

Notably he only works if you cast the spell, so even if you copy modal spells you only get one trigger.

Fun Rank: Want to Build

Riku of Two ReflectionsRiku of Two Reflections

Riku of Two Reflections

Much like Loot, Riku is a solid good stuff commander. He has more play to him given his abilities. You can either go Spellslinger or creature value pile.

I prefer commanders that have some restriction, as it's easier to settle on a build.

Fun Rank: Could be Fun

Saheeli, Radiant CreatorSaheeli, Radiant Creator

Saheeli, Radiant Creator

An incredibly powerful and fun value commander. You can copy all sorts of things, like Wurmcoil EngineWurmcoil Engine or energy generators like Volatile StormdrakeVolatile Stormdrake. And because they don't exile, you get the death triggers from the sacrificed creatures or artifacts.

Fun Rank: Fun

Storm, Force of NatureStorm, Force of Nature

Storm, Force of Nature

Turns out giving any instant or sorcery storm is incredibly powerful. But it can also be incredibly fun. Have you ever wanted to cast Dance with CalamityDance with Calamity with storm?

My issue with her as a commander is her inherent power; she's hard to build as a "fair" commander.

Fun Rank: Could be Fun

Surrak DragonclawSurrak Dragonclaw

Surrak Dragonclaw

A great role-player in the 99 of Temur decks. There are a ton of ways in Temur to prevent your creatures from being countered or giving them trample. No need to dedicate your command zone to an underwhelming commander.

Fun Rank: Fun in the 99

The SwarmlordThe Swarmlord

The Swarmlord

A commander storm effect on a six-mana commander is underwhelming. Adding more counters to a basically vanilla commander doesn't sound fun to me. But in the 99 of a deck, this effect is great when paired with a cheap commander.

Fun Rank: Fun in the 99

Ureni of the UnwrittenUreni of the Unwritten

Ureni of the Unwritten

Unlike Miirym, Ureni doesn't require you cast or cheat Dragons into play. Instead they enable you to cheat big idiots directly into play. And there are several ways to double up their enters trigger with cards like PanharmoniconPanharmonicon and making copies with Reflections of LittjaraReflections of Littjara.

Fun Rank: Fun

Ureni, the Song UnendingUreni, the Song Unending

Ureni, the Song Unending

I love playing this in the 99 of a Ureni of the Unwritten or Mirrym deck. It's a powerful removal effect that can be difficult for opponents to deal with. I could see this as a Voltron commander. Unfortunately it can't hit your own creatures, so no combo potential.

Fun Ranking: Fun in the 99

Xyris, the Writhing StormXyris, the Writhing Storm

Xyris, the Writhing Storm

It's like if HullbreacherHullbreacher wasn't annoying and fun. Your opponent might draw into an answer for all your Snakes, but the risk is worth the reward.

Also everyone loves to draw cards, so you can use that as political favor.

Fun Rank: Fun

Yasova DragonclawYasova Dragonclaw

Yasova Dragonclaw

An underwhelming theft effect that, while repeatable, requires too much mana. There are ways to abuse this effect by sacrificing your opponents' creatures or using fight effects.

Fun Ranking: Fun in the 99
