Hey, nerds! In this installment, I'll have fun ranking all of the Jeskai commanders. Of course, each person's definition of fun differs, so I might rate a commander lower or higher than you. That doesn't mean I think it's bad or that you're bad for playing them, and, to be clear, this is for casual EDH only. Also, I won't be covering partner commanders in this series.
The ranks are as follows:
- Want to Build: I'm interested in building these commanders. Their effect could be unique or a new take on an old mechanic I like.
- Fun: These are close to wanting to build, but I'm not going out of my way to brew a list for myself.
- Could Be Fun: These commanders are powerful and don't pull you in a single direction, but because of that, it allows you to build weird strategies with a powerful engine, or have unique build paths that could work.
- Fun in the 99: Sometimes commanders are printed for 60-card Magic or to support a theme. I don't want to call them not fun, since they usually are fun. But just not fun as the leader of a deck.
- Not Fun: This is usually reserved for older commanders who are seven-mana vanilla creatures, something way too jank, or are too salt-inducing for my taste.
Akim, the Soaring WindAkim, the Soaring Wind
An unwhelming token commander that's outclassed in both power and fun by several new commanders. You could also build Jeskai Birds if you so desire.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Aragorn, King of GondorAragorn, King of Gondor
Aragon makes a nasty Jeskai combat commander. So long as you can attack with him, you'll have no trouble taking back the crown. Also, he goes hard with infinite combat steps.
Fun Rank: Fun
Arthur, Marigold KnightArthur, Marigold Knight
A weird mix of Winota, Joiner of ForcesWinota, Joiner of Forces and Sneak AttackSneak Attack. You get to essentially draw the creature after attacking with it. Works great with powerful enters triggers.
Fun Rank: Fun
Captain America, First AvengerCaptain America, First Avenger
The flavor is solid here, and Jeskai can cheat expensive artifacts into play. The most you can deal with a single activation is 12 with Excalibur, Sword of EdenExcalibur, Sword of Eden.
Fun Rank: Fun
Cayth, Famed MechanistCayth, Famed Mechanist
An interesting mix between a Token and Counter commander. Works great with PanharmoniconPanharmonicon and Teleportation CircleTeleportation Circle effects.
Fun Rank: Fun
Commodore GuffCommodore Guff
I'm a bit biased as I've a Guff list that's my baby. You don't get access to green for Doubling SeasonDoubling Season effects, but I've never missed it thanks to Guff's static.
Fun Rank: Want to Build
Dr. Madison LiDr. Madison Li
Of the several energy commanders available, I think she's my least favorite. Not that she's boring, but her abilities are too linear for my liking.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Dynaheir, Invoker AdeptDynaheir, Invoker Adept
She's a Thousand-Year ElixirThousand-Year Elixir on a commander, and if you spend enough mana on an active ability, you get to copy it. I'm interested in seeing what I can do with this commander.
Fun Rank: Want to Build
Elsha of the InfiniteElsha of the Infinite
She is a perfect example of a could-be-fun commander. You can either build a degenerate combo deck or some weird noncreature deck.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Elsha, Threefold MasterElsha, Threefold Master
I prefer when commanders don't have to deal combat damage to trigger, but I understand why Elsha needed the restriction.
Fun Rank: Fun
Éowyn, ShieldmaidenÉowyn, Shieldmaiden
Another Jeskai commander that I've built in paper. I kept the deck Lord of the Rings themed, and it can still win games.
Fun Rank: Fun
Gandalf of the Secret FireGandalf of the Secret Fire
I love that the payoff isn't overly powerful, and he triggers on sorceries if you can give them flash. He won't win you the game on his own, but he can enable fun lines.
Fun Rank: Fun
Gavi, Nest WardenGavi, Nest Warden
Every time I've played her, she's been fine, but nothing to write home about. I wish I liked this commander more.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Gnostro, Voice of the CragsGnostro, Voice of the Crags
A middling payoff that gets less interesting the more I read it. Maybe you could combo it with Brash TaunterBrash Taunter or Aetherflux ReservoirAetherflux Reservoir?
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Gwen StacyGwen Stacy
I'll rehash what I said in my Spider-Man Fun Ranking. I really like that you don't have to just remove +1/+1 counters, but any type. This is a great way to deal with lingering finality or pesky 1/-1 counters.
Fun Rank: Fun
Hinata, Dawn-CrownedHinata, Dawn-Crowned
Much like Elsha of the Infinite, this commander either does combo things or is an interesting value commander.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Immard, the StormcleaverImmard, the Stormcleaver
He seems like a fun nonartifact charge counter commander. You need to attack to trigger his abilities, or use PanharmoniconPanharmonicon, which is better than combat damage.
Fun Rank: Fun
Inspirit, Flagship VesselInspirit, Flagship Vessel
Another Jeskai precon commander I've built in paper. At first glance, I wasn't impressed with Inspirit. However, after playing it several times on paper, I've become a huge fan.
Fun Rank: Want to Build
Kasla, the Broken HaloKasla, the Broken Halo
Convoke is an enjoyable mechanic in isolation. However, I'm not convinced building an entire deck around the mechanic is necessarily fun.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Kate StewartKate Stewart
My first instinct was to rate this commander low, likely in the could be fun tier. But the more I think about it, the interested I become.
Fun Rank: Fun
Kilo, Apogee MindKilo, Apogee Mind
In my Edge of Eternities fun ranking, I said, "Kilo is a prime example of less is more. It has a simple ability that you can build tons of decks around." This still holds true, but you do need to build a deck around him.
Fun Rank: Fun
Kykar, Wind's FuryKykar, Wind's Fury
I've seen the range of Kykar builds from a powerful combo deck to Spirit kindred. He can support multiple strategies easily or slot nicely into a superfriends deck.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Leori, Sparktouched HunterLeori, Sparktouched Hunter
Speaking of superfriends, Leori wants you to build around a single planeswalker. Okay, you can add others, but you want as much value from the same type.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Liberty Prime, RechargedLiberty Prime, Recharged
An incredibly fun card in the 99 of an energy deck, but I don't see this working great as a commander.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Narset, Enlightened ExileNarset, Enlightened Exile
If you want to build a go-wide deck on a budget, Narset is the girl for you. She buffs your tokens and can clone token-generating spells from the graveyard.
Fun Rank: Fun
Narset, Enlightened MasterNarset, Enlightened Master
The original Narset has been a staple for years. All she needs to do is swing in one time to loop extra turns or cheat some wild spells off the top. My ranking might be a hot take, but I don't find this commander fun in any deck.
Fun Rank: Not Fun
Narset, Jeskai WaymasterNarset, Jeskai Waymaster
She isn't as flashy as her older siblings, but her ability is no joke. This version rewards you for playing the game by refilling your hand at the end of the turn.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Numot, the DevastatorNumot, the Devastator
Land destruction in a casual Commander like this is not fun. I will gladly play against it in cEDH or 1v1 formats, but I don't want to see this even in the 99 of Dragon decks.
Fun Rank: Not Fun
Optimus Prime, HeroOptimus Prime, Hero
I wish Optimus Prime were as iconic of a Magic card as he was a character in media. Sadly, his card is underwhelming and unfocused. Also, I'm not sure why Agatha's Soul CauldronAgatha's Soul Cauldron is missing from his EDHREC page.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Pramikon, Sky RampartPramikon, Sky Rampart
If you want to torture your play group, try this big Wall. I like this card in the 99 of decks since I've only been trolled with this by someone in my group.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Ruhan of the FomoriRuhan of the Fomori
Notable for being the late Sheldon Menery's favorite commander. Ruhan has great art, and his ability will make games go by quickly if left unchecked.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Saint Traft and Rem KarolusSaint Traft and Rem Karolus
This duo is a more interesting Convoke Commander than Kasla. They give you bodies to tap for convoke and untap themselves.
Fun Rank: Fun
Satya, Aetherflux GeniusSatya, Aetherflux Genius
I've been loving this card in Canadian Highlander and Vintage Cube. Haven't tried it in the command zone yet, but I've been beaten by it more than once.
Fun Rank: Want to Build
Sevinne, the ChronoclasmSevinne, the Chronoclasm
The only thing memorable about Sevinne is Sevinne's ReclamationSevinne's Reclamation and the fact that Dockside ExtortionistDockside Extortionist came in his precon.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Shiko and Narset, UnifiedShiko and Narset, Unified
They make a great Aura commander if you want to be cute. Even if you don't copy the spell, you get to draw, which is always fun.
Fun Rank: Fun
Shiko, Paragon of the WayShiko, Paragon of the Way
There are some cute combos you can do with Shiko, but five mana for this effect, even if you blink it, seems too slow for me. I'm happy to be wrong, but I'd rather play this in the 99 of some of my decks.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Shu Yun, the Silent TempestShu Yun, the Silent Tempest
One of the original powerhouses of the format. I'ven't seen one at the table in years, thanks to power creep and more interesting commanders.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Sonic the HedgehogSonic the Hedgehog
Despite not being a huge fan of Sonic, I think this commander is interesting. There is some powerful combo potential if you want to go higher power. Or you can go full creature-focused with Jeskai haste.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Tetzin, Gnome ChampionTetzin, Gnome Champion
As we get more double-faced artifact cards, Tetzin will get a lot better. Right now, the options are pretty limited, unless you use Liquimetal TorqueLiquimetal Torque to turn random MDFCs into artifacts.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
The ArchimandriteThe Archimandrite
This feels like one of the laziest-designed commanders on this list. I've never been a fan of these mixed kindred decks as each option pulls you in a different direction. And oftentimes, there isn't enough support for a single creature type.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
The Face of BoeThe Face of Boe
This lets you cast Ancestral VisionAncestral Vision at sorcery speed, so that's neat. There are some powerful cards you can cheat with this, but it requires Boe to hit the board and not be removed.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Vadrok, Apex of ThunderVadrok, Apex of Thunder
Mutate is one of the most annoying mechanics to deal with in paper. I wouldn't mind seeing this in some Jeskai spells deck, but I do not want to play against mutate.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
Zedruu the GreatheartedZedruu the Greathearted
Don't let this goat fool you. Underneath that fur is a cold-blooded killer. She'll quickly end you with Nine LivesNine Lives or stop you from playing with Grid MonitorGrid Monitor.
Fun Rank: Could be Fun
Zinnia, Valley's VoiceZinnia, Valley's Voice
I've been looking to build Zinnia since they got spoiled. Reminds me a bit of Satya, Aetherflux Genius. I do love that offspring can stack with creatures that already have offspring.
Fun Rank: Fun
Zurgo and OjutaiZurgo and Ojutai
A Jeskai Dragon commander that provides some card advantage and can bounce itself to your hand. Notably, any Dragon can trigger their effect. Looks like a fun engine in the 99 of a Dragon deck.
Fun Rank: Fun in the 99
