Welcome to the preview season for Edge of Eternities, the next upcoming Magic: The Gathering expansion! This expansion's story is set at the literal edge of the Blind Eternities in a cosmos fittingly called the Edge.
The set was crafted as a space opera. As such, the tropes you could find in such properties as Star Wars, Dune, or Star Trek can be found here.
On Tuesday, June 8th, Wizards of the Coast's WeeklyMTG stream debuted the first official looks at the new set since the story teasers.
Due to the nature of the stream, we have a large number of preview cards to look over. So, let's not delay. On to the reveals!
Edge of Eternities: Main Set Card Spoilers
The Edge of Eternities stream gave us 33 cards to look over. Notably, we will be saving a bit of discussion for some of these cards until the end of this section. But for now, let's look at some of these spectacular new cards!
According to the Magic story for this set, the Endstone is a major McGuffin for this storyline as a whole. With it, someone can rewrite the past and future to their liking.
Is this what Jace and Vraska want, to the ends that they've taken Loot to help them seek it out?
Quite possibly; however, it's currently far from their reach. Thankfully, though, it's not far from our own. Let's look at The Endstone!
Not long ago, we learned that Eldrazi and Slivers may make an appearance in this set in some way. Eldrazi are, after all, lifeforms from the Blind Eternities, and Slivers also seem alien enough. As such, these next two cards just make sense in the set:
Finally, it should be said that we publicly got a legendary Lobster creature before we got a proper legendary Drake!
This is something that perhaps Wizards of the Coast ought to put some stake in. Anyway, look at this Lobster's little tuxedo! He's just a silly little guy. Here's Ragost, Deft Gastronaut.
With that, let's look at the Booster Fun treatments for Edge of Eternities!
Booster Fun Treatments
Edge of Eternities has seven different Booster Fun treatments for cards in the set. These treatments include:
- Extended Art
- Stellar Sights, which is divided into two treatments, one of which is a Poster-style iteration
- Surreal Space
- Viewport Lands
- Japanese Showcase
- Special Guests
Notably, this time around Special Guest cards are treated like movie posters, a la Innistrad Remastered. Let's look at all of these!
Extended Art
The Extended Art versions of rares and mythic rares in this set are just like the Extended Art versions of cards in other sets. Let's quickly look at some of them.
Stellar Sights - Regular Version
The Stellar Sights lands are a bonus sheet for Edge of Eternities that features a plethora of reprinted land cards.
Many of these lands boast high usage in various formats over time, including Modern, Legacy, and Commander.
Let's look at four of these lands in their regular version:
Stellar Sights - Poster Version
The regular versions of the Stellar Sights lands have a small legibility issue for those who can't discern the Wingding-style typeface.
Therefore, Wizards of the Coast is also releasing "Poster" versions of the bonus sheet, which has a more legible font and is therefore easier to make out properly.
Here are the previous four Stellar Sights cards with the Poster iteration!
Surreal Space
Space is far-out, dear readers. Even more so than perhaps our own terrestrial oceans, space is an infinitely expanding expanse of never-ending potential and discovery.
As such, some things within it can be perceived as highly surreal. The Surreal Space Booster Fun treatment seeks to showcase this idea to the best extent a piece of printed cardstock can.
Here are some of those treatments!
Viewport Lands
In Edge of Eternities, there are also many different planets explored throughout the story of the set. As such, the Viewport Lands seek to look at some of them through the ever-vigilant eyes of the extraplanar outsider.
Let's take that role for a moment and look at two Viewport Lands:
Japan Showcase Treatment
Since Duskmourn and Foundations, we've been treated to a showcase treatment from Japanese artists collaborating with Wizards of the Coast.
Edge of Eternities is no different. As such, here are some Japanese Showcase cards!
Special Guests
This set also has Special Guest cards! Here you can see the five we've been shown, in their special full-art Movie Poster-style design:
One More Card...?
In the asset of the Pack Bundle for Magic Arena, you can also see the Arena render for the card Alpharael, Stonechosen. For those who may have missed this elsewhere, here is that render:
If the card is too hard to make out properly, here is the text for this card:
Alpharael, Stonechosen
Legendary Creature - Human Cleric {M}
Ward - Discard a card at random.
Void - Whenever Alpharael attacks, if a nonland permanent left the battlefield this turn or a spell was warped this turn, defending player loses half their life, rounded up.3/3
In this render, the rarity for the card is rather tough to identify perfectly, as is the power for the creature.
Therefore, take those aspects of this card with a grain of salt. Otherwise, it's exactly as printed. What a card!
This Set Is Out of This World!
That just about wraps up our recap of the Edge of Eternities preview season kickoff stream. How are you liking this set?
