Iron Spider, Civil WarriorIron Spider, Civil Warrior | Art by Michael Turner & Mark Roslan
Marvel Universe borderless source material cards use artwork from Marvel's comics, and the five legends are reskins of previously printed Magic legendary creatures. You can find these in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Prerelease Packs, Gift Bundles, and Scene Boxes.
If you open one of these incredibly cool looking cards, you might be interested in building a Commander deck around it. I'm here to help! Below, I have a starter kit for each one - a list of cards to consider adding to your stack while filling out the 99 of your deck.
Iron Spider, Civil WarriorIron Spider, Civil Warrior
Iron Spider, Civil WarriorIron Spider, Civil Warrior is a reskin of Alibou, Ancient WitnessAlibou, Ancient Witness, a potent Boros commander that very ably leads an artifact creature deck. It gives other artifact creatures you control haste, and whenever one or more artifact creatures you control attack, Alibou/Iron Spider deals X damage to any target and you scry X, where X is the number of tapped artifacts you control.
X damage to any target is very significant since early on it can mow down a potential blocker for your assault, and then later on it can launch a significant amount of damage straight to an opponent's life total. And don't discount that powerful scry ability tacked on, which means you'll be drawing pure gasoline each turn.
Spider-Man Flavor Cards
If you want to pepper in some Spider-Man flavor, there's a few cards that fit in. Iron Spider, Stark UpgradeIron Spider, Stark Upgrade is another version of the same character, and is very powerful in a deck that cares about artifact creatures.
Living Brain, Mechanical MarvelLiving Brain, Mechanical Marvel can grow a smaller artifact creature into a 3/3, or animate a non-Equipment artifact into a 3/3 to join in the attack. Peter Parker's CameraPeter Parker's Camera is a powerful artifact that can copy Alibou/Iron Spider's triggered ability three times, which is going to really swing a game in your favor.
Commander Deck Starter Kit
Mana artifact creatures like Gold MyrGold Myr and Iron MyrIron Myr are excellent ways to help accelerate your commander, can potentially attack to get that trigger, or can simply be a tapped artifact that increases the X value. Steel OverseerSteel Overseer is another artifact that will tap itself, and, oh by the way, it'll grow your team of artifact creatures each time.
I would ensure most of the creatures in the deck are also artifacts, but Losheel, Clockwork ScholarLosheel, Clockwork Scholar's two abilities really support the theme so well that I'd make an exception here. Bronze GuardianBronze Guardian and Illustrious WanderglyphIllustrious Wanderglyph are awesome artifact creatures that support your artifact creature strategy.
The station ability of the Warmaker GunshipWarmaker Gunship and The Eternity ElevatorThe Eternity Elevator Spacecraft make excellent ways to tap artifact creatures you can't otherwise attack with, while the Vehicle Salvation EngineSalvation Engine boosts your other artifact creatures and when crewed makes a formidable attacker in its own right.
Throne of the God-PharaohThrone of the God-Pharaoh is a potent finisher for this deck since you're looking to tap your artifact creatures anyway. Anim Pakal, Thousandth MoonAnim Pakal, Thousandth Moon is another rare non-artifact creature that's totally worth the slot since it creates 1/1 Gnome artifact creatures. And Sami, Wildcat CaptainSami, Wildcat Captain is one more non-artifact creature that gets turbo-charged in an artifact-heavy deck.
The Mardu side of Windcrag SiegeWindcrag Siege is a nice way to double up the triggered ability of Alibou/Iron Spider. Unwinding ClockUnwinding Clock untaps all your artifacts so you can have more blockers on other players' turns.
The bane of artifact-heavy decks are sweeper spells that destroy all artifacts, so you should include a couple cards like Scrap MasteryScrap Mastery and Wake the PastWake the Past to recover your battlefield when that happens.
Master Weaver, Web ProtectorMaster Weaver, Web Protector
Master Weaver, Web ProtectorMaster Weaver, Web Protector is a reskin of Arasta of the Endless WebArasta of the Endless Web, which is a decent commander for a Spider typal deck, especially if any of your friends play decks that chain together a flurry of instant and sorcery spells.
Spider-Man Flavor Cards
The new Spider-Man sets unsurprisingly have a ton of Spider-related cards, even for a mono-green deck. Radioactive SpiderRadioactive Spider sacrifices to tutor up a Spider Hero from your deck, such as Spider-Man, Miles MoralesSpider-Man, Miles Morales and Spider-Ham, Peter PorkerSpider-Ham, Peter Porker, both excellent cards when you're hopefully creating a bunch of 1/2 Spider tokens.
Wall CrawlWall Crawl and Spider-MobileSpider-Mobile both ably support the Spider typal theme of the deck.
Commander Deck Starter Kit
Not only is ArachnogenesisArachnogenesis an excellent FogFog variant that makes Spider tokens equal to the number of creatures attacking you, but it prevents damage dealt by all non-Spider creatures, which means your Spider deck can gang-block and likely kill a handful of attackers.
SwarmyardSwarmyard is another Spider-specific support card that doesn't cost any non-land slots in your deck, and with the land ramp spells available to mono-green Kindred SummonsKindred Summons is an excellent card-advantage engine and potential combat-trick.
Arachnus SpinnerArachnus Spinner and Arachnus WebArachnus Web are decent in a deck with lots of Spiders for temporarily shutting down the biggest threat on the battlefield. I put Spinner of SoulsSpinner of Souls in any creature-heavy deck, but it's extra awesome in a Spider typal deck.
If you're making a bunch of extra Spiders with the commander's triggered ability, you'll want a few ways to push through game-winning attacks, so I'd recommend Titania's CommandTitania's Command, Preposterous ProportionsPreposterous Proportions, and Season of GatheringSeason of Gathering.
Doc Ock, Armed and DangerousDoc Ock, Armed and Dangerous
Doc Ock, Armed and DangerousDoc Ock, Armed and Dangerous is a reskin of Lorthos, the TidemakerLorthos, the Tidemaker, which is an excellent flavor-fit due to all the eights on the card! A Lorthos/Doc Ock deck will need a bunch of mana to get going, so this is going to likely be a Core (Bracket 2) deck that will give you time to set up.
Spider-Man Flavor Cards
If you want to pepper in some Doc Ock flavor, the Spider-Man sets have a fair number of options. Lady Octopus, Inspired InventorLady Octopus, Inspired Inventor will help you cast the numerous artifact mana sources you'll need to ramp up to eight mana, while Doc Ock's TentaclesDoc Ock's Tentacles will equip to a creature in the mid-game and provide a boost that can help hold the fort for a few more turns to cast your commander.
Alchemax Slayer-BotsAlchemax Slayer-Bots also buys you time from a creature that might otherwise harass your life total.
Doc Ock's HenchmenDoc Ock's Henchmen has a nifty connive ability that can improve your hand, while Doc Ock, Sinister ScientistDoc Ock, Sinister Scientist is a solid earlier-game creature that can grow large and gain hexproof later in the game.
Commander Deck Starter Kit
If you want to push forward on the Octopus theme, I suggest Octopus UmbraOctopus Umbra, Mesmerizing BenthidMesmerizing Benthid, and Sea-Dasher OctopusSea-Dasher Octopus as solid cards that fit the theme.
AetherizeAetherize, AetherspoutsAetherspouts, and Spectral DelugeSpectral Deluge are all ways to buy you time if you're playing against decks that are aggressive and quickly diminishing your life total.
In addition to the usual two-mana rocks, I'd be looking to play Gilded LotusGilded Lotus and Caged SunCaged Sun to ramp your mana production into exactly the range you're looking for. Try and hold Skyclave RelicSkyclave Relic until you can pay the kicker cost so you can have three indestructible mana rocks you can count on to survive mass artifact destruction.
If you own a Sword of Feast and FamineSword of Feast and Famine, throw it in this deck since you'll be tapping out to pay for the commander's trigger, and hitting with the Sword will untap your mana so you can cast something later. I also like Hylda's Crown of WinterHylda's Crown of Winter to tap down problematic creatures, and you can cash it in later to draw a bunch of cards.
Since this is a mono-blue deck running a bunch of Islands, cards like High TideHigh Tide for extra mana and Flow of KnowledgeFlow of Knowledge for extra cards are excellent choices for the deck.
I like Thryx, the Sudden StormThryx, the Sudden Storm as a flash blocker that also helps reduce the expensive commander by one mana, and Not of This WorldNot of This World is a mana-free way to protect your commander from being targeted by a spell or ability.
Spider-Gwen, Web-WarriorSpider-Gwen, Web-Warrior
Spider-Gwen, Web-WarriorSpider-Gwen, Web-Warrior is a reskin of Najeela, the Blade-BlossomNajeela, the Blade-Blossom and fair-warning: Najeela is an incredibly powerful commander that can win at cEDH tables, so you'll want to be aware that playing it at lower brackets may draw fear from your opponents, even if your deck isn't specifically designed to combo off.
My advice is to just lean into the power since opponents will expect it from you anyhow!
Spider-Man Flavor Cards
If you're a fan of Gwen Stacy, there are a couple versions of her that you can slot into your deck, because Najeela's color identity is all five colors! Spider-Gwen, Free SpiritSpider-Gwen, Free Spirit is quite powerful, especially in a deck that wants to be attacking, potentially multiple times a turn.
Gwenom, RemorselessGwenom, Remorseless is a powerful card-advantage engine, while Gwen StacyGwen Stacy is mostly here for flavor reasons since Najeela isn't really focused on playing cards from exile.
Commander Deck Starter Kit
You'll want to look for cards that produce mana when they attack, especially ones that are also Warriors like Grand Warlord RadhaGrand Warlord Radha and Professional Face-BreakerProfessional Face-Breaker.
Derevi, Empyrial TacticianDerevi, Empyrial Tactician isn't a Warrior, but it can generate mana from creatures you control dealing combat damage to a player. When you can produce for each attack, you'll be able to activate Najeela/Spider-Gwen's ability to keep attacking.
Radha, Heir to KeldRadha, Heir to Keld and Jolene, the Plunder QueenJolene, the Plunder Queen are two more Warriors that create mana when attacking, while Roxanne, Starfall SavantRoxanne, Starfall Savant isn't a Warrior but makes a Meteorite token that can be tapped for two mana and oh yeah, deals two damage too!
With the right color permanents on the battlefield, Faeburrow ElderFaeburrow Elder can potentially tap to entirely pay for Najeela/Spider-Gwen's ability. The more creatures you're attacking with, the more Druids' RepositoryDruids' Repository will help you pay for that ability.
And if one or more creatures you control deal damage to a player, Nature's WillNature's Will will untap all your lands to keep the attacking party going.
Samut, Vizier of NaktamunSamut, Vizier of Naktamun takes advantage of the Warrior token that Najeela/Spider-Gwen creates to hopefully draw you some extra cards, while Champion of LambholtChampion of Lambholt takes advantage of those tokens to increase its power to make your attackers harder to block.
Gornog, the Red ReaperGornog, the Red Reaper loves Warriors attacking, making them bigger and harder to block.
I'd consider running Chance for GloryChance for Glory and Final FortuneFinal Fortune to squeeze in an extra turn - maybe even out of turn order - that might allow you to combo kill everyone a turn before your opponents expect it.
Venom, King in BlackVenom, King in Black
Venom, King in BlackVenom, King in Black is a reskin of Skithiryx, the Blight DragonSkithiryx, the Blight Dragon, a Phyrexian Dragon Sekelton that has terrorized Commander pods since it was first printed in Scars of Mirrodin.
Keep in mind that poison is a bit controversial in Commander, since ten poison counters still kill opponents even though the starting life totals are double the usual starting life. I'd recommend discussing that with your friends to make sure they're cool with it before bringing a poison deck to the table.
Spider-Man Flavor Cards
Venom is a super popular character from the Marvel universe(s), and the Spider-Man sets definitely provide a lot of on-theme cards if you want to lean into that flavor, with cards like Alien SymbiosisAlien Symbiosis, Venom's HungerVenom's Hunger, and Lethal ProtectionLethal Protection.
As mentioned above, Gwenom, RemorselessGwenom, Remorseless is a powerful card advantage engine that'll do great things in most any black deck, as will Agent VenomAgent Venom.
Venom, Eddie BrockVenom, Eddie Brock and Venom, Evil UnleashedVenom, Evil Unleashed provide some Venom flavor support, but keep in mind that these flavor includes will be somewhat at odds with the goal of the deck to poison your opponents.
Commander Deck Starter Kit
There are a bunch of creatures with the infect ability you can populate your deck with, starting with Ichor RatsIchor Rats, Hand of the PraetorsHand of the Praetors and Reaper of SheoldredReaper of Sheoldred.
There are also spells that give your opponents poison counters, such as Infectious InquiryInfectious Inquiry, Vraska's FallVraska's Fall, and Phyresis OutbreakPhyresis Outbreak.
Once you hit your opponents with a poison counter, you can leverage the proliferate ability of cards like Blightbelly RatBlightbelly Rat, Drown in IchorDrown in Ichor, and Karn's BastionKarn's Bastion to potentially win the game without any more attacks.
A mono-black deck is going to run a lot of Swamps, which makes cards like LashwritheLashwrithe, Bubbling MuckBubbling Muck, and Consuming CorruptionConsuming Corruption incredibly efficient and powerful to support your strategies.
Since infect creatures tend to be a bit smaller in size than most creatures in Commander these days, I'd look to have more ways to boost their size, like Leyline AxeLeyline Axe, Brotherhood RegaliaBrotherhood Regalia, and O-NaginataO-Naginata.
What sort of cards would you recommend adding to these Commander Starter Kits?
