You Want A Dragon's Dragon In Temur? Ureni Has You Covered!

Hello, my friends, and welcome to another Commander Spotlight! This regular column will feature one legendary creature, usually from the most recent Commander precons or Jumpstart products, and provide you with a deep dive into ideas that should help get you started brewing your own Commander deck.

This week I'm shining a spotlight on a commander from the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander deck Temur Roar. While Eshki, Temur's RoarEshki, Temur's Roar just cares about creatures with high power, Ureni of the UnwrittenUreni of the Unwritten cares about Dragons, which seems the perfect choice for a spotlight on this new set!

Ureni of the Unwritten

I was tempted to just say that the rest of my write-up for Ureni of the UnwrittenUreni of the Unwritten is... unwritten! Thanks for coming by...

Just kidding! Let's dive in.

Haste

Hellkite Courser
Dragon Tempest
Temur Ascendancy

It's awesome that Ureni triggers when it enters the battlefield, but it also triggers when it attacks, so I'd want to include ways to give it haste and attack right away so you can hopefully get two Dragons onto the battlefield from your library.

Hellkite CourserHellkite Courser is a Dragon so it fits well in a Dragon deck, and since Ureni costs more than Hellkite Courser, the Courser can help preview the awesomeness of Ureni.

And if Ureni gets destroyed once or twice that commander tax can make it really hard to recast, so Courser can come along and help for one turn.

Dragon TempestDragon Tempest is a fantastic card for any Dragon deck but it's really going to do big work with Ureni with extra Dragons getting put onto the battlefield from triggers.

And with Temur right in the name, Temur AscendancyTemur Ascendancy gives your creatures haste and lets you draw cards when your bigger Dragons hit the battlefield.

Carnelian Orb of Dragonkind
Crashing Drawbridge
Lightning Greaves

Carnelian Orb of DragonkindCarnelian Orb of Dragonkind provides both ramp and haste, which is a great combo with a seven mana commander. Crashing DrawbridgeCrashing Drawbridge isn't a Dragon, but it provides some nice defense against smaller early attackers, and once you start dropping Dragons it can let them charge into the fray! And then there's Lightning GreavesLightning Greaves, which provides haste and protection from targeted removal.

Extra Attacks

Scourge of the Throne
Hellkite Charger
Aggravated Assault

If you get to untap with Ureni on the battlefield, it might be nice to have it attack more than once, right? We've got a couple Dragons that can do just that, with Scourge of the ThroneScourge of the Throne doing the deed if you're not the player with the most life and want to attack that player on your first attack; and Hellkite ChargerHellkite Charger does a pretty good Aggravated AssaultAggravated Assault impression.

And speaking of Aggravated AssaultAggravated Assault we might want to run that too!

Overpowering Attack
Savage Beating
Last Night Together

The freerunning ability for Overpowering AttackOverpowering Attack can provide a solid discount if you're attacking with Ureni, but even at full cost if you have a bunch of flying Dragons an extra combat step could prove to be lights out for at least one of your opponents. And speaking of lights out, Savage BeatingSavage Beating cast with entwine will seriously smash some life totals.

Last Night TogetherLast Night Together is a fun extra combat spell and is particularly helpful if an opponent has large blockers that might otherwise make attacking tricky.

Utility Dragons

Parapet Thrasher
Broodcaller Scourge
Ganax, Astral Hunter

There are a ton of great Dragons you can put in your Dragon decks, and you should go wild with your favorites. But you'll want to include some Dragon cards that do more than just fly and smash face.

Parapet ThrasherParapet Thrasher is an excellent new Dragon with a menu of triggered abilities that scales perfectly in multiplayer assuming you can get in combat damage for up to three opponents. Broodcaller ScourgeBroodcaller Scourge is another awesome new Dragon that can drop a permanent from your hand to the battlefield when a Dragon deals combat damage to a player.

Worst case you can drop a land into play so make sure you're playing enough lands and card draw! And then there's Ganax, Astral HunterGanax, Astral Hunter which creates Treasures whenever a Dragon enters the battlefield under your control, much appreciated in a deck with a seven mana commander.

Korlessa, Scale Singer
Wrathful Red Dragon
Draconic Muralists

Korlessa, Scale SingerKorlessa, Scale Singer is an excellent Dragon that blocks early beatdown, and later on can "draw" you cards when you play Dragon spells from the top of your library. Wrathful Red DragonWrathful Red Dragon makes it awkward for attackers and blockers getting into combat with your Dragons, and is a pretty strong rattlesnake away from anyone playing Blasphemous ActBlasphemous Act! Draconic MuralistsDraconic Muralists has an excellent dies trigger to go get the best Dragon in your deck for the moment at hand.

More Dragons - Adventures

Sapphire Dragon
Sword Coast Serpent
Young Blue Dragon

I have found the Dragon/Adventure spells to be an excellent way to increase the density of Dragons in my Dragon decks while still having interaction. I usually count these as Adventures when planning out my mana curve, and you get an overcosted Dragon spell hanging out for free in exile until you don't have anything else to do.

Sapphire DragonSapphire Dragon stands in as your NegateNegate, Sword Coast SerpentSword Coast Serpent stands in as an UnsummonUnsummon, and Young Blue DragonYoung Blue Dragon gives you an OptOpt.

Emerald Dragon
Fang Dragon

You'll be surprised how often the Adventure side of Emerald DragonEmerald Dragon will come in handy at various points in the game, though only use it on an opponent's fetchland activation if you're diabolical.

And if your opponent is filling the battlefield with some 1/1 chump blockers -- particularly fliers -- you'll be happy for Fang DragonFang Dragon's Adventure!

More Dragons - Omens

Whirlwing Stormbrood
Stormshriek Feral
Bloomvine Regent

The brand new Dragon/Omen cards are a similarly excellent way to keep your Dragon card density high while giving you valuable spell effects lower on the mana curve.

And since Omens shuffle back into your deck when you cast them, the Dragon side of the cards tend to be more impactful than the Dragon/Adventures.

I'm not sure I'd normally play the Omen side of Whirlwing StormbroodWhirlwing Stormbrood, but three +1/+1 counters can push a big Dragon past a big blocker, and the Dragon side with flash and then lets you cast Dragon and sorcery spells as though they have flash is pretty sweet!

Stormshriek FeralStormshriek Feral's Omen side offers a little card filtering, and the Dragon side has haste and firebreathing, a decent mana sink in the late game.

The Omen side of Bloomvine RegentBloomvine Regent provides much needed ramp as Cultivate you shuffle back into your deck, and the Dragon side is a sizeable body with some decent lifegain attached.

Marang River Regent
Runescale Stormbrood

Of course Marang River RegentMarang River Regent is the star of this cycle, offering decent instant speed card draw on the Omen side, and the Dragon side is a potent tempo play, forcing two nonland permanents to their owners' hands.

The Omen side of Runescale StormbroodRunescale Stormbrood is probably better in tournament formats, but it might still snag a Sol RingSol Ring or SkullclampSkullclamp or Demonic TutorDemonic Tutor.

Sagu Wildling
Dirgur Island Dragon

I'm not entirely sure Sagu WildlingSagu Wildling is worth the slot but I'm willing to give it a shot in a three color deck to help fix your red or blue. But I am a fan of Dirgur Island DragonDirgur Island Dragon's Omen side for a little tempo with card draw attached.

Dragons Matter

Breaching Dragonstorm
Encroaching Dragonstorm
Roiling Dragonstorm

I think the cycle of Dragonstorm enchantments are very cool for Dragon decks, giving you some things to do if you can't or don't want to deploy more Dragons to the battlefield. Breaching DragonstormBreaching Dragonstorm spins the wheel and could be awesome -- an eight mana spell! -- or much less awesome, which makes it super fun.

Encroaching DragonstormEncroaching Dragonstorm is reusable big mana ramp that can ensure you can keep casting your big mana Dragons and commander tax throughout the game. And then Roiling DragonstormRoiling Dragonstorm is a little bit of card selection to help smooth your draws.

Spit Flame
Dragon's Hoard
Jade Orb of Dragonkind

I like that Spit FlameSpit Flame can be used on an early aggressive creature to save on some damage, and later on you can get it back to help finish off creatures that took damage in combat.

The mana ability of Dragon's HoardDragon's Hoard is decent enough, but really what we're in the business for is removing gold counters to draw cards!

Jade Orb of DragonkindJade Orb of Dragonkind is an excellent way to help protect Ureni for a turn and hopefully get at least one attack in.

Stack Your Library

Brainstorm
Sylvan Library
Scroll Rack

BrainstormBrainstorm, Sylvan LibrarySylvan Library, and Scroll RackScroll Rack are excellent cards on their own, but they're particularly awesome in conjunction with Ureni, helping to stack your deck for a good hit from Ureni triggers, and then Ureni clears the top of your deck so that Sylvan or Scroll RackScroll Rack can get a fresh look at the top of your library.

Thundermane Dragon
Worldly Tutor
Noxious Revival

Thundermane DragonThundermane Dragon is a sweet new card that lets you look at the top of your library, and you can cast creature spells from the top of your library if it has power four or greater; Ureni's trigger clears the top of your library to get a fresh look.

Worldly TutorWorldly Tutor can search your library for a big, bad Dragon to put on top of your library before Ureni enters or attacks, and Noxious RevivalNoxious Revival can do the same if there's a Dragon in your graveyard, and being able to pay life instead of mana for it could come in clutch when your commander costs seven mana.

Serious Ramp

Kodama's Reach
Cultivate
Skyshroud Claim

Green has a ton of awesome land ramp and color fixing spells, but when your commander is expensive, and you have a bunch of high cost spells you'll want to cast, I like to focus on serious ramp cards that give you two lands for one spell.

Kodama's ReachKodama's Reach and CultivateCultivate ramp you a basic land, and give you another basic land to deploy as normal. And Skyshroud ClaimSkyshroud Claim ramps you two forests, which can include nonbasic Forests like Ketria TriomeKetria Triome or Stomping GroundStomping Ground.

Entish Restoration
Traverse the Outlands
Nissa's Renewal

Odds are pretty good we'll have a creature on the battlefield with power four or greater, which makes Entish RestorationEntish Restoration a solid, instant speed land ramp spell.

And Traverse the OutlandsTraverse the Outlands is going to pull out most of your basics when you've got a big Dragon chilling on the battlefield. Nissa's RenewalNissa's Renewal isn't fancy, but ramping three basic lands and gaining seven life is a solid thing to do if you're not casting Dragons.

What other sorts of cards are you going to play in your Ureni of the UnwrittenUreni of the Unwritten deck? What new legends from Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander are you most excited to build decks around?
