Estinien VarlineauEstinien Varlineau|Art by Fang Xinyu
Hi there, and welcome to part two of building around interesting new commanders from Final Fantasy! Just like last time, I'm here to...
- Highlight interesting gameplan(s) for a Final Fantasy commander
- Build a budget-friendly (~$40) "Core" power level deck following these plans
- Work through important card categories and discuss notable inclusions
- Include a decklist and a deck checklist
- Go through mid-budget upgrades (<=$20 per card) as options to invest more into this strategy.
If you've read my past articles, you'll know I'm drawn to commanders that you can take in multiple directions, depending on what parts of the card you would like to showcase.
Last time, I took a look at Edgar, Master MachinistEdgar, Master Machinist and was excited to highlight its flexibility to be a value engine or set up quick damage. This time, I'm delighted to present some similar aggro/value adaptability in a new commander: Estinien VarlineauEstinien Varlineau.
The Game Plan(s)
Beyond Estinien's ability to adapt to the pace of a given game, this commander allows us to explore a spellslinger strategy (known for being in ) and a "Dragons matter" strategy (known for having a base) in a completely new color combination. Additionally, we just got a bunch of new and Dragons in Tarkir: Dragonstorm, so let's see what we can do with them!
Spellslinger and Thematic Disruption
is a great color combination for cheap interaction. Because Estinien needs itself and its Dragon friends to get through to turn combat damage into card draw, efficient removal, like the classic Path to ExilePath to Exile, Swords to PlowsharesSwords to Plowshares, and DesparkDespark, are great inclusions here. Estinien and Dragons have flying, so it's also okay to give our opponents creatures with cards like Unwanted RemakeUnwanted Remake and Crib SwapCrib Swap. The additional spot removal choices are a nod to having a full grip from this commander's draw ability: March of Otherworldly LightMarch of Otherworldly Light, March of Wretched SorrowMarch of Wretched Sorrow, and AbolishAbolish. Finally, the deck can repeatedly cast DarkblastDarkblast and Flickering WardFlickering Ward to make combat frustrating for our opponents while continuing to grow Estinien.
A few cheap cantrips (Chromatic StarChromatic Star, Fountainport BellFountainport Bell, Mishra's BaubleMishra's Bauble) smooth our mana, while a few others grant evasion (Aphotic WispsAphotic Wisps, NighthazeNighthaze) so our creatures can connect with opponents, leading to additional card draw.
Dragons Matter
Thanks to Tarkir: Dragonstorm and Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, there are also a few cards that count towards Estinien's noncreature spells matter and are Dragons. Crystal DragonCrystal Dragon and Topaz DragonTopaz Dragon can go on an Adventure and get cast later in the game, while Scavenger RegentScavenger Regent, Purging StormbroodPurging Stormbrood, and Feral DeathgorgerFeral Deathgorger can be cast as Omens and shuffle back into the deck. Corroding DragonstormCorroding Dragonstorm is also a great way to tie both themes together because it's a cheap noncreature spell that can be repeatedly recast whenever a Dragon you control enters.
To ensure Estinien can start drawing cards the turn it comes down, the deck includes a few Dragons in the 1-3 mana range, including the disruptive Clarion ConquerorClarion Conqueror, mini-value enabler Nadaar, Selfless PaladinNadaar, Selfless Paladin, and a few creatures with changeling: Changeling OutcastChangeling Outcast, Universal AutomatonUniversal Automaton, and Mirror EntityMirror Entity.
Invasion of New CapennaInvasion of New Capenna is a cool card that isn't a Dragon, but it plays well in a deck with a lot of creatures that share a type. As an added bonus, it also represents two noncreature spells cast for Estinien. We can even equip the Holy Frazzle-CannonHoly Frazzle-Cannon to one of our changelings to pump our whole team each turn.
Later in the game, powerful legendary Dragons, including the new Zenos yae GalvusZenos yae Galvus, come down to create card advantage and/or disrupt our opponents, while Sunscorch RegentSunscorch Regent and Ancestor DragonAncestor Dragon offer repeated lifegain to offset the losses from Estinien's draw ability.
The deck's manabase also includes many nods to this theme, including lands that care about Dragons, like Haven of the Spirit DragonHaven of the Spirit Dragon, Maelstrom of the Spirit DragonMaelstrom of the Spirit Dragon, and Temple of the Dragon QueenTemple of the Dragon Queen, and lands that become Dragons themselves, like Cave of the Frost DragonCave of the Frost Dragon and Soulstone SanctuarySoulstone Sanctuary. TimelessTimeless and EternalEternal Dragons are also mana sources if needed in the early game that also represent Dragons later on. The on-theme mana rocks Dragon's HoardDragon's Hoard and Dragonstorm GlobeDragonstorm Globe round out this section.
Mass Disruption
It's important to keep the multiplayer aspect of Commander in mind when building decks, so what cards in Orzhov can affect multiple opponents at once if need be?
Some Dragons, like Clarion ConquerorClarion Conqueror, Protector of the WastesProtector of the Wastes, and Scavenger RegentScavenger Regent, can stop opposing permanents, while Shadrix SilverquillShadrix Silverquill allows us to play politics and pit our opponents against each other.
Beyond Scavenger Regent, Crippling FearCrippling Fear and Crux of FateCrux of Fate also serve as one-sided wrathwrath effects, clearing out opposing blockers and/or taking off the pressure being presented by an aggressive opponent. Austere CommandAustere Command is also a great fit for this deck, as there are few important enchantments or small creatures that are important for this strategy.

Mid-Budget Upgrades
A few interesting mid-budget and Dragons include Scalelord ReckonerScalelord Reckoner and Boneyard ScourgeBoneyard Scourge.
To better protect our board presence, we can add the cheap Rebuff the WickedRebuff the Wicked, the "free" Flawless ManeuverFlawless Maneuver, and the new versatile Ultimate Magic: HolyUltimate Magic: Holy.
This color combination also has flexible removal in Anguished UnmakingAnguished Unmaking and "free" targeted removal in Deadly RollickDeadly Rollick and Snuff OutSnuff Out, allowing us to grow our commander without committing extra mana.
The classic Toxic DelugeToxic Deluge is a mass removal spell that won't affect large Dragons or an Estinien with a bunch of +1/+1 counters on it.
Black Market ConnectionsBlack Market Connections gives us repeated midrange value with the added bonus of creating additional "Dragons" each turn.
Blind ObedienceBlind Obedience means our opponents will have a harder time blocking your threats, and extort plays into the "spellslinger" theme while boosting you life for more Estinien card draw.
Finally Mox JasperMox Jasper and other rare dualdual landslands can upgrade the consistency of your mana base.
Conclusion
So there you have it, a low-budget Core deck inspired by one of the many exciting commanders from Final Fantasy. Do you see any other cards from this new set that could fit well into this strategy? Sound off in the comments below! Thanks for reading.
