Green Goblin, RevenantGreen Goblin, Revenant | Art by Chris Rahn
Welcome to a deck tech built around a newly-spoiled card from Marvel's Spider Man. This article and the next one from me will follow a similar formula:
- Highlight a new commander from Marvel's Spider Man and describe some game plans
- Build a budget-friendly (~$40) "Core" power level deck following these plans
- Work through important card categories and discuss notable inclusions
- Include a deck list and a deck checklist
- Go through mid-budget upgrades (<=$20 per card) as options to invest more into this strategy.
This week, let's take a look at Green Goblin, RevenantGreen Goblin, Revenant. This commander has a clear "build around me" feeling, which is why I was drawn to it!
What Does Green Goblin, Revenant Do?
Beyond the keywords flying and deathtouch, this commander's main ability is:
"Whenever Green Goblin attacks, discard a card. Then draw a card for each card you’ve discarded this turn."
There are many different directions we could go with this ability. First, discarding cards immediately brings to mind the madness ability, which reads "If you discard this card, discard it into exile. When you do, cast it for its madness cost or put it into your graveyard."
Filling a deck with discard outlets means we can use this commander to cast a bunch of spells with madness, and then replace them with even more cards. But that's just the tip of the IcebergIceberg. There are tons of cards we can discard for free or cheap, like Street WraithStreet Wraith; cards we cast from our graveyard with abilities, like escapeescape or flashbackflashback; and spells that get super-charged with a stocked graveyard, like Songs of the DamnedSongs of the Damned.
And that's not even mentioning the classic "ReanimatorReanimator" strategy that fits perfectly into the colors we're working with.
The Game Plan(s)
So which direction should we take? Surprisingly, looking at other popular commanders, we're actually in new territory with Green Goblin, Revenant. There are a few commanders in this color combination that care about discarding cards, but most focus more on other game plans.
For example, Anje FalkenrathAnje Falkenrath is classic, but usually just sticks to cards with madness. AsmoranomardicadaistinaculdacarAsmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar also technically cares about discard, but a majority of decks instead highlight FoodFood and other artifact token synergies.
Finally, Chainer, Nightmare AdeptChainer, Nightmare Adept is a discard outlet, but most decks built around this commander prioritize leveraging spells like Buried AliveBuried Alive and ReanimateReanimate rather than discarding a ton of cards at once.
With that being said, let's lean into the flexibility of this new commander and sprinkle in some madness, some flashback, some escape, some cards that care about discarding in general, and see where we can go!
Discard Outlets
This commander works best when we have a lot of discard enablers. But there are many kind to choose from: repeatable activated abilities, one time looting effects, and cards that trade in our whole hand.
Repeatable Activated Abilities
Creatures like Oona's ProwlerOona's Prowler and Skirge FamiliarSkirge Familiar allow us to discard tons of cards at will, while some noncreature cards like Oblivion CrownOblivion Crown and the old-school Volrath's DungeonVolrath's Dungeon are additional repeatable discard outlets.
Discarding a Ton of Cards at Once
The creatures Ogre-Head HelmOgre-Head Helm, Anje's RavagerAnje's Ravager, Ox of AgonasOx of Agonas, and Bedlam RevelerBedlam Reveler – alongside the noncreature cards Brass's Tunnel-GrinderBrass's Tunnel-Grinder and Change of FortuneChange of Fortune – allow for massive card advantage when combined with Green Goblin.
Mana-Efficient Looting
Our commander combines with looting effects like Burning InquiryBurning Inquiry, Faithless LootingFaithless Looting, Control of the CourtControl of the Court, Dangerous WagerDangerous Wager, and Stoke GeniusStoke Genius to turn only a couple mana into tons of cards.
Haste Enablers
Will all these cards reliant on our commander actually attacking, let's include low-mana haste enablers, like Lavaspur BootsLavaspur Boots and Swiftfoot BootsSwiftfoot Boots. AngerAnger and Olivia, Mobilized for WarOlivia, Mobilized for War tie well into the discard theme and also grant our commander the important ability to attack immediately.
Discard Matters
Ok, so we're churning through massive amounts of cards per turn, but what's the point? This is where discard payoffs come in!
This deck can turn discards into:
- Additional card selection from Inti, Seneschal of the SunInti, Seneschal of the Sun and Veronica, Dissident ScribeVeronica, Dissident Scribe
- A huge threat in Ivora, Insatiable HeirIvora, Insatiable Heir
- Direct damage from Glint-Horn BuccaneerGlint-Horn Buccaneer, Magmakin ArtilleristMagmakin Artillerist, Brallin, Skyshark RiderBrallin, Skyshark Rider, and Faith of the DevotedFaith of the Devoted
- Token production from Cryptcaller ChariotCryptcaller Chariot
- Mass removal from Archfiend of IfnirArchfiend of Ifnir and Feast of SanityFeast of Sanity
On-Theme Disruption
Commander isn't always about just about executing your own game plan. Sometimes it's about stopping your opponents in their tracks! With that being said, let's check out some disruptive spells that fit with our discard theme.
Bone ShardsBone Shards, Lightning AxeLightning Axe, and Bitter TriumphBitter Triumph are efficient spot removal spells – and the usual downside of discarding a card actually becomes an upside in this deck.
Big Game HunterBig Game Hunter, Muck DrubbMuck Drubb, Dark WitheringDark Withering, and Terminal AgonyTerminal Agony are spot removal/disruptive spells that synergize with all our discard outlets. Remember you can play any card with madness at instant speed if you discard it to something like a Lightning AxeLightning Axe or to any activated ability.
Sickening DreamsSickening Dreams, Nahiri's WrathNahiri's Wrath, and ConflagrateConflagrate serve as on-theme mass disruption, while SkycrashSkycrash and StarstormStarstorm are conditional removal that can also be cycled away (aka discarded) for additional synergy.

Mid-Budget Upgrades
A lot of the potential for upgrades come in the form of discard payoffs like Bone MiserBone Miser, Surly BadgersaurSurly Badgersaur, Currency ConverterCurrency Converter, and Monument to EnduranceMonument to Endurance.
If you need more discard outlets, try Clive, Ifrit's DominantClive, Ifrit's Dominant, Artist's TalentArtist's Talent and Dark DealDark Deal.
Shadowgrange ArchfiendShadowgrange Archfiend is a powerful creature with madness, while Fear of Missing OutFear of Missing Out and Tersa LightshatterTersa Lightshatter both do double duty as outlets and payoffs for having a stocked graveyard.
For more on-theme mass disruption, FirestormFirestorm is a great option.
If you're ok with adding some Game Changers, GambleGamble is a great on-theme tutor (that doesn't absolutely break the bankbreak the bank like the other discard-friendly Game Changers Lion's Eye DiamondLion's Eye Diamond and Mox DiamondMox Diamond do.
Finally, if you're tired of your commander getting hit by annoying spot removal, you can add the classic Lightning GreavesLightning Greaves. This deck doesn't really care about targeting its own creatures, so this is pretty much a strict upgrade to either of the pairpair of of bootsof boots already in the deck.
Conclusion
So there you have it, a low-budget Core deck inspired by one of the many new commanders from Marvel's Spider Man.
